Adios Pro 3 - The Ultimate Long Distance Shoe?

  • Adidas took some risks with the Adios Pro 3. They added stack height. They changed the drop. And even though there’s also more cutouts, there's still more weight. This shoe is very different than it’s predecessors. But was the risk worth it?

    Great review, Mike. I love the look and feel of the shoe and it’s a good improvement on the Pro 2 (which was my favorite distance shoe). However, took it for a 33 km run last week and came home with a blister on my left heel that totally surprised me. Going to look at my lacing and see if it was just a one-off issue. Otherwise, highly recommend for comfort and great response on long runs at or around marathon pace. And the colorway is killer too!

    I loved the Adios Pro2 for shorter fast distances. I still use them for interval workouts, but wasn’t as keen for Half/Marathon compared to VapourFly’s or AlphaFly’s. However, this new version could be the one. Will be interested in your longer run feedback 🏃‍♂️👍

  • @levandmarthapolyakin-aaron2183

    The midsole geometry aspect that has one landing closer to midfoot sounds very much like the Asics Edge+ when compared to the Sky+, but of course with a whole lot more stack height to begin with on the Adios Pro3, as well as a slightly lower drop. But that is what works so smoothly for me as a midfoot striker (sometimes heel when tired-like most people).

    Interestingly enough, I have the Spring Green colourway on the Adios 2, and off the top of my head, it weighs in around 230 in a UK 8/US 8.5, and that was with a fresh battery in the Salter scale. I'd like to think it's lighter than that. Is it possible that there have been unannounced modifications to future iterations of the same shoe, is that a genuine theme in the running shoe industry? Eager to hear your people's comments, as my shoe, which is smaller by half a size, seems to weigh significantly more than the equivelant half size up. How does that work!
    Edit: Just realised that these are the shoe weights stated by adidas. Either Salter manufacture unreliable scales, or adidas is lying.

More people need to be warned about this!! I have seen many commenters suggesting KT tape over the joint or skipping the lacing on the top set of eyelets all together. Another issue is their laces. Listened to a lot of redditors and swapped out my Brooks shoe laces onto the adios pro 3, much better lockdown.

    I also found the 3 is much more comfortable than the 2 at longer distances..as you say the landing area is better and not as harsh as before..it's smoother rolling and when you get into a rhythm you can feel the effort and speed come together and you really feel like you're flying..V2 was fast but also beat you up in a race..I'm not a fan of the upper, especially the lack of any heel structure or actually no structure anywhere but the breathability is good..will try it on a fast,smooth 10k next weekend..beware the outsole is really "tacky" and don't get lazy about lifting your feet on a rough road surface..most outsoles can slide a little,if you scuff your feet, but this one has too much traction and you might get some road rash..easy to see why many elites are winning and setting records..

    Loving the Adios Pro 3.
    Tried the Adios Pro 2 just because it was available at 50% off. I liked it and used it for Sprints and Intervals. Started using it for longer runs and it delivered. The problems I had with the 2 was it was a bit on the narrow side (forefoot and heel) and one of the carbon rods broke.
    Got the Adios Pro 3 (because of the good experience with the 2 and again at a discounted price)
    (+) Feels more stable. Feels wider on both the forefoot and heel (but still not at the level of the MetaSpeed Sky/Edge)
    (+) Really feel the extra cushioning compared to the 2 (especially at the heel)
    (+) There's more "rocker" feel compared to the 2 (and especially the VF 2)
    (+) Breathable upper - definitely good for racing
    (-) Not liking the lacing system. I this it can be further improved.
    Will be trying it during a Sprint Triathlon race instead of the Alpha Fly and hopefully the positive things I've seen holds in a race as well.

    • @JasonTreu
      @JasonTreu Před 2 lety +3

      I really liked the Saucony much more than Adidas version. The upper fit better, laces were an issue (but there is a workaround), it’s more bouncy, better energy return, and more fun shoe to run in. Plus, you could use it for a 5K. Adidas is a cruiser. It doesn’t do well beyond half marathon pace. Saucony is a completely different shoe than the last version. I found another difference is I felt I had to proactively push the adidas to go faster. Wirh the Vaporfly I find it pretty effortless to push the pace and to go faster. With addidas I had to focus to do it. Saucony was much closer to the Vaporfly. I also noticed a decent amount of weight difference with Addidas around an ounce heavier. I felt tempos were better in the Saucony and much better in track workouts (though there are better options for this. Saucony also was better in easy warm ups. Both shoes were pretty stable, but I don’t have stability issues. Though I will say I really like the PrimeX as a trainer. Neither would replace Vaporfly and/or Alphafly on race day, but Saucony is coming closer. I think there are better use cases for the addidas Pro 2 versus the 3.

      The Prime X has the same design and at first I had to use physio tape and socks that weren't too thin. For me it's a step backward compared to Pro 2.
      On the bright side, the upper tends to become more flexible with time and this become less of an issue. I don't even notice it anymore in my Prime X (though I do have some light red pressure points on the top of my feet after a long run).

    Do you think there would be less energy return for a runner that is smaller in stature with these shoes or super shoes w/high stacks in general? Have been debating whether to run nxt marathon w/Takumi Sen 8, pony up for the pro 3, or stick to the alphaflys.. alphaflys are what actually got me thinking if for a shorter/lighter runner, higher stack heights and more absorbant mid-foams may be less optimal. Personal anecdote - am on the smaller side and lost about 10 lbs after having lyme disease/covid in 2021 resulting in minimal running, and definitely notice a more dampened return in energy when running in the alphaflies since. I know the weight varies for different shoe sizes, but does that also go for the density of the foam?

    • @kofuzi
      @kofuzi  Před 2 lety +2

      I think you also need to consider power. I may be 20 or 30 pounds heavier than an elite woman, but their marathon pace is about a minute per mile faster than mine. What they put in to the shoe is very different than what I can do. And it has very little to do with weight

    • @gabrielfmiller1855

      That's fair.. probably a reason Jepchirchir wears the Pro3s lol. I do think though in an apples to apples comparison of the Adios Pro 3 and TS8, the thicker slab of LSPro in the Pro3 will attenuate the force generated by the same power exertion somewhat more than w/the TS8. My understanding was that this is preferred in longer distances as to reduce wear/tear. Gonna take the TS8 out this weekend for a longer effort and see how it feels. Love the review btw! I firmly believe that the relevant metric is effort when describing how a shoe feels. If I’m wrong on that, then anything a professional sponsored runner could ever tell you about a shoe is useless (unless you’re also a professional runner).
      But for what it’s worth, marathon effort for me these days equates generally to about 6:45/mi on rolling tarmac in 66F and 97% humidity with a cross wind. Threshold effort is about 6:15/mi.

I was lucky enough to get a free pair of the Adizero Pro 3 to wear as part of a study so I should wear them for the marathon but I'm worried about the potential for blisters as the upper really doesn't fit that well. Interestingly Adidas did used to allow you to customise shoes back in the Adios 3 days (I’ve got a couple of pairs). It didn’t go as far as pull tabs, but you could select the colour of the shoe, the stripes, the tongues the laces etc and have some text printed in them. They weren’t ridiculously expensive either. Don’t know why they stopped but I guess it wasn’t profitable enough to be worth the effort for them
