I actually would be interested in the Rogue if it were built in Japan. My Japan built 2009 Murano is still on its original CVT has been very reliable with transmission oil changes every 30k miles.
They still are, only the base S and SV models are made in the Tennessee plant, the Platinum, SL and Midnight Grades come from Japan...
How does the build quality of the different plant based trims compare sir?@@BigAltimaEnergy719
My mom has a 2011 Nissan Murano and it was built in Japan and has no issues other than regular maintenance. She has 70k miles.
@@BigAltimaEnergy719not in reality, if you look on autotrader at vins some of each trim at J vin
@@BigAltimaEnergy719 My 2020 Rouge SV with tech package was built in Japan. Build date was June 2019.
If Nissan is seeing these situations then GM, Toyota, Honda, Ford as well other industries are seeing the same economics.
Us, Americans, want top shelf quality while making the least amount of effort to give such top quality ourselves. All domestic auto makers are evidence of that! Cheap, not durable, expensive, and with no pride
It’s only makes sense to move most of American production out of the U.S. or allow manufacturers to sell directly to buyers to cut out the middleman (dealers).
I’ve worked at this plant since 2011. It’s sad we are seeing this happen. The bad part is that we are hearing this from you and not our employer right now. We did get a raise because of the UAW but I’d gladly go back to what I was making to keep the plant open.
Thank you for contributing to our economy. But hm. It's almost like money doesn't just automatically "happen" when people clock in and clock out but that they have to work hard to have passion and pride in making a competitive product for a competitive price in a competitive market. 🤔
Who would buy the rouge if they are threatening suppliers of a 30 percent in reduction in cost of parts! There is a chance quality and safety will go down if prices for parts go down.
Really liked the quality of the rogue rental car I just had. Hope the US workers would be able to find other employment, but I also want Nissan to make the financial decisions to be able to stay afloat and continue to provide American and Japanese jobs in the future.
I just had a Rogue SL rental myself, It was very nice!
This is good for consumers because as you mention, Japanese build quality is superior. And if you look on lots, several trims have both American and Japanese-built VINs, not just the Platinum. Is this move bad for American autoworkers? Sure, but what do you want us to say? American build quality has gone downhill since the late 70s. Is it poor oversight? inferior skills? People not caring about their jobs? Could be all of the above. The fact is that people work hard for their money, and naturally want to get the best products they can for that money - in this scenario it's the Japanese-built Rogue.
I do agree that they move the Rogue back to Japan and built it there .. I also think they would make it e-power (hybrid) ..
I also feel it’s why they are discontinuing the Altima and why they did the same to the Maxima ..
Nissan is tightening up their lineup and strengthening their products to be back where it was
Yeah im happy the impreza went back to Japan, probably will be the most reliable hatchback of 2024
Made in Japan quality is unmatched. Their worksmanship is very excellent.
@@aeronYTcoif my car VIN doesn’t start with a “J” I dnt buy it.
I don’t want to blame them for this, business is business…
This is exactly what I knew would happen when the Detroit 3 got their new contract. Honda and Toyota have already agreed to give their associates large raises in the last couple of months. It just makes the prices go up even higher.
In regard to the big 3..you know all they gave the workers only means about $800 in the price of their vehicles
The HUGE increases that have been seen were not because of their manufacturing employees.
It’s crazy because conventional wisdom is J vin cars are generally more expensive to produce.
THIS
Used to be, but we have a workforce that wants 30% pay bumps without any personal improvement and Fridays off.
The current exchange rate of the Japanese Yen makes it more affordable to build in Japan, I guess. Also switching to Japan may help to save Japan's suffering economy.
@@thomas735 you're blaming the worker here? Man...these CEOs really have you convinced the least powerful class is responsible for everything negative.
The US is collapsing. A lot of countries currencies are rising against the US.
Sounds like the future for some Japanese manufacturers is most if not all EV production for global market from US and Europe and global ice vehicle production from Japan and other non North American and European countries… that recent Akio Toyoda speech at the Auto Salon certainly was focused around protecting jobs for Japanese and other Asian workers etc so makes sense to bring most if not all global ice production from Europe and North America back
I’m personally looking forward to the new Kicks.
I don’t understand why Nissan makes the Murano. It seems like they could make the Rogue better if they discontinued the former and focused on the latter.
Apparently they’re already making a new Murano. Have you seen the spy shots for it yet?
Although I do agree with that statement…
Nothing Nissan does makes much sense
But Ford and Chevy made a big mistake to discontinue Edge and Blazer so Nissan made the right choice to keep Murano
I disagree. There is money in the Murano as it’s priced more than the Rogue and though sales are down, that’s only because they let it sit around so long. They’ve easily sold over 89k Murano in the past.
@@chezzyperson3339 The Blazer is still in production. But still, sales-wise Nissan moves a lot more Rogues than Muranos.
All Nissan has to do is make their cars with CVTs more reliable, even if they are incompetent enough that they couldn’t improve their transmissions when Toyota and Honda use CVTs and they’re fine.
We were a huge Nissan family until they started installing CVTs in everything. The only way we’d go back is if they used conventional transmissions. Won’t consider Nissan again until that happens.
Nissan CVT's are reliable if you keep up with the maintenance. They aren't Toyota, Honda, Subaru where you can neglect the CVT maintenance and still run. Nissan CVT's are the BMW of this world, if you keep up with the maintenance meaning change the CVT fluid every 30,000 miles like it states, it can last you a very long time. But how many people change their CVT fluid every 30,000 miles??? As a former tech at a Nissan Dealership with 17 years of experience, I've seen their CVT's last even 200k miles and still go strong if you KEEP up with the maintenance. Now is this cheap??? Now it isn't, normally a CVT fluid change is goes for any where from $200 to $500 dollars, so no it's not cheap, but it will a million times make the CVT more reliable.
I've seen Nissan CVT transmission fail at 60k miles, and because the owner never once changed the CVT fluid, now you can have your opinion about needing to change the CVT fluid so often, but like I stated if you follow the recommendations of the owners manual and change the fluid every 30k miles, IT CAN last a very long time.
Now do I wish their CVT transmission was like Toyota, Honda, etc where they can neglect the maintenance and still get crazy good reliability 1 million percent I do, but even with Toyota, Honda, they also recommends you change the CVT fluid every 30k miles.
Jatco CVTs have gotten much better in terms of reliability over the years. avoid the ones from 2000s and early 2010s
And their crappy engine getting investigated by feds
@@Jabid21until like 2016 after 2017 they improved but they still junk
Thanks unions. Way to make conditions better for so many.
Labor goes up, price goes up, you gain nothing.
This is why we need to get our costs lowered in this country.
As an owner of 2 Suburus (one is a 2023 Outback Touring), I rented a Rogue 2023 for a business trip and was amazed by the ride and quality. UI and specially cruise control setting sucks but otherwise much better than a Subaru.
Unintentional consequences of UAW victories
Well deserved consequences. Moving to Japan is an improvement if you ask me!
@@BMWWolf unfortunately I agree. We have to step it up.
Consequences of UAW 'victories'
Good . Who wants a 3 cylinder turbo anyway. Not to mention variable compression to boot. The union workers deserve the increase have the CEOs take less than their multi million dollar paychecks
@@markwilliams6378 They deserve whatever they want as long as there is an entity which can provide it to them. What will they have if they won't have a job?
I just got a notice from the Nissan dealer I actually liked and trusted for services that the Dealership owner is closing and no longer serving Nissan.
This is defiantly a bit unnerving even more so after watching this video. (Nissan Burlingame [Putnam Automotive Group])
Nissan just use cost of the parts as excuse, but the main reason is the UAW.
Regardless, NA brought this upon themselves
Nissan is a automaker that’s building back up. A UAW conflict would be the end of the company. It’s the smartest move.
@@deadbot61Nissan doesn't employ UAW workers.
Big W for Nissan and the consumer. The current outlander is based on the rogue platform, seats 7 and is built in Japan. Good to see both are now made in Japan.
Taking production to Japan and renaming it the X-Trail instead of the Rogue (worst name) would be good for Nissan
Maybe cut costs at the dealer level? Start allowing consumers to buy directly from the manufacturer. Sales floors only add cost to the transaction and doesn’t add any value.
I agree but this would even have a bigger affect on 1000s more people working for dealerships now with out a job
@@KirkKreifels Tesla and Polestar seem to have it figured out. A reduction in staff yes, but there would still be a need for some people to complete the transaction .
probably tough to do so. Dealerships have sweetheart deals in many state laws that literally mandate manufacturers selling through dealers. I don't know if it is still the case, but Tesla for a long time couldn't legally sell direct to consumer in Texas, for instance.
I work at Nissan in Smyrna on the Rogue line actually and we got a video last night at the start of shift denying everything. He said they talk with the people from Japan every day and there are no plans on moving and the Smyrna plant will not be shutting down.
Well if it will result to higher profits due to lower production cost for the company then the decision is a no brainer !!!
This is completely shocking to me as I live in Franklin Tn and work just south of the Smyrna plant, this would completely destroy the bulk of the economy there. There isn't anywhere for those employees to go if that does happen since the hiring has stabilized here. Also there for a while of the previous generation some of them were built in Korea also. But still that's crazy they're willing to obliterate a city here and peoples livelihood. Top out for that plant is $34 an hour which does take a while to get there, but still it's one of the higher paying plants in that area.
I work at Nissan, Smyrna and we’ve known about since last year. The technicians will be fine. They are actually adding a third line in the next 1-1/2 years for more EV crap. I don’t care what we produce as long as myself and fellow coworkers are still employed.
Here in Mexico I saw a Nissan Rogue from 2016 and if you compare that to the X-TRAIL that is made in Japan, the reliability of the Japanese version from the same year is superior also the quality
Nissan needs e-Power Rogues. They are much better quality with no pressure ratio engine and CVT.
My cousin loves her Rogue.
An up to 30% cost reduction on an automaker that isn't known for quality material and long lasting interiors already...
That almost sounds ridiculous, but if it was announced publicly then I imagine Nissan is confident the suppliers are more than capable of it and they want pressure from the local Tennesseans on those suppliers. The Nissan plant is an established employer for those communities and hold a decent amount of sway. Perhaps they discovered those suppliers gave a better rate elsewhere.
The Rogue has the best interior in the segment right now
Guess they shouldn't have cancelled their smaller cars. More Micra, more Xterra, more Versa Note, second gen Juke.
I bought a 2023 Nissan rogue sv and the vin number starts with a J so aren’t they already importing them already
I don’t think it’s bad way, cuz Nissan struggled with quality and reliability for quite sometime. I would say if their vehicle made in Japan would be better.
Cars in general need to come down in price. Greed and wages are way too high in the auto indestry.....
Moving production to the U.S. was a huge mistake. The costs are too high. It likely would cost less to produce in China and pay the tariffs.
How much do you think a fair wage would be?
Consider the working environment and pace, the risk of acute and chronic health issues, the mandatory overtime, the physical strain on the body.
Nissan has many competitors for labor within and outside the industry, the wage increases were competitive but not excessive in my opinion.
Kirk, I welcome this new avenue of discussion on the economic impact and importance of the Auto Industry. I dispute the claim that there is any SUBSTANTIVE difference in quality and longevity in Japanese built cars vs their American/Canadian counterparts. Quality control is entirely reliant on corporate standards which are universal in nature. A well built car is a reflection of corporate culture wherever it is built. On the subject of wages, we need an update on the earlier report which suggests Subaru in Indiana pays less than McDonalds.😂
I am in Canada and the new vehicle pricing is very high as every automaker is. I wonder if it is about cost as it will be cheaper to make in Japan and shipping to North America is cheaper. I think the wages may be higher. But it is expensive to live here.i think our governments need togettheirspending under control
To help with inflation. Good video.
My daughter loves the look of the Rogue and the interior, but I informed her about the unreliable transmissions, she was so disappointed.
I'm curious why Toyota and Honda are able to be profitable in the US while Nissan & Subaru are struggling. Are all Toyota & Honda plants union? If so, then where are Nissan & Subaru going wrong?
With the state and local government mandated pay rates and Union demand , will result in many manufacturers of all kinds of goods moving out of America.
Will this incentivize Toyota to raise the prices on the Rav4? I'm debating about trading in my Corolla for a Rav4, want a slightly bigger vehicle with 4wd.
RAV4 the best
The demand of the market is already raising the Price of the Rav4. Toyota still cannot bring up production to meet demand.
They have to be bluffing. The import regulations are literally designed to make it unprofitable to import vehicles at that volume. Also, labor in Japan might be cheaper at the moment, but they also have significantly worse manpower shortages and might be on the verge of having wages rise for the first time in thirty years. I love Japanese build quality, but I don't see how this would be a good business decision
That was my initial reaction, but they revealed they really can move japanese production to China, so existing workers could take over US production without needing huge expansion
SV Midnight edition is the other trim that is made in Japan. J for the win!
It is sad but as you said Nissan is doing what it needs to try and survive. There will be more from different legacy brands, as the shift to EV's continues. The car market is saturated with too many car models and not everyone will survive. Margins are thin for legacy new cars and profits are thin...
From personal experiences I can tell you Japanese quality is way better than others. From bad experiences of cars made in the USA I’m never buying made in the US again. Very happy with my made in Japan it’s just better made.
The Rouge is one of the top sellers for Nissan it just doesn't hold up well one they went to the CVT transmission it was over. I am sure the employees seen this coming. I not sure if the Union is involved with Nissan yet???
How about the x-trail I know they have them in Australia 🤔
X-trail is made in Japan iirc.
Nissan is having issues with the 1.5 turbo in the rogue. Some lawsuits are dropping. I like the rogue but this engine is very complex and it’s starting to show
If this were the Detroit three or Toyota saying this, I’d say “greed!”. But this is Nissan actually trying to make a profit, so let’s give them a break. My best wishes to Nissan USA and their cost cutting efforts. I support Nissan making the Rogue in the USA because if they don’t, and if they shut production down in the US, that’ll be the final nail in the coffin for Nissan. And Nissan would essentially be another Mitsubishi.
Go read the consumer reviews for the new Rogue, problem after problem.
I just want Nissan to go away from the CVT! Just bought a new Pathfinder and love it. Would love to get a Rogue or Murano for the wife but holding off in hopes they release a new one with a traditional automatic transmission.
Apparently new murano will get the 9 speed paired with the same V6 in it now. Later in 2025 i think.
I think Subaru might be moving the Outback production to Japan too.
1. Better build quality( in Japan) all around - down to the individual components.
2. Dollar/ yen rate not currently in Nissan's favor
The ones built in Japan are pretty decent cars. They still come with the 2.5 L N/A engine. I hope you get the Japanese made ones instead.
I have never heard of factory workers making 6 figures
They need to get out from under big government bureaucratic company crushing regulations too.
You don't think Japan has a huge regulatory framework for automobiles? You have to be kidding, right?!
Market/Business data is not favoring the battery cars even with incentives. Battery Tax credit will be removed in the next budget battle or Admin change.
The writing is on the wall. Would like to know what metrics is Honda looking at though to want to fully convert to coal powered electric.
Lastly, UAW is the biggest reason prices are so inflated. Big 3 trucks are great. Remove trucks from the equation, UAW produced vehicles are Rubbish.
When I was in Japan I saw their Honda Odyssey was made in China. It seems that some of the Japanese automakers are making ways to utilize those Chinese partner plants and build to export. Still would rather see Honda build cars in Japan and import them to here. Nissan cost cutting in the US.
So, if Nissan move its production to Japan, will they move their USA headquarters along with the production to Japan? The headquarters is here in TN. If that is the case, a lot of people here in TN would be affected.
Nissan North America HQ is staying put in TN
For me, the timebomb belt/chain design CVT & the timebomb 1.5L turbo-engine automatically disqualified the Rogue from any purchase consideration.
That engine is being investigated by the feds so yea is junk
Your comment is proof of USA dystopia
@@deadbot61this guy had a bad experience with a Japan-built 2020 Toyota Corolla and now owns a 2022 N/A CX-30. I mean, as dystopian as he is, honestly Nissan’s CVTs are still a bit sus image-wise. They’re probably getting better, but a lot of damage has been done to Nissan’s image already. Nissan can come back hard if they try.
Totally agree with you dystopia. My wife has a 2007 Murano which she loves very much. Approximately 163K miles. A new Murano will tickle her fancy... possibly
@@peterjordan2738apparently the new one will have a 9 speed. It will most likely be paired with the 6cyl like it had now.
Gee, I WONDER what happened to cause the price of steel to go up in the US. Hmmmmm.....
This is why start up company manufacture their product in China. Americans want too high of a wage, so the only option is to raise the price of the product or build your product outside the US. Most company choose China.
Even with import fees they would be more profitable building in Japan. Sounds crazy but that's why industry left America, too high of materials and labor cost plus US government over-regulating everything. Car prices are already crazy.
My 2023 Rogue SV was built in Japan. Maybe the Canadian sold cars were?
Is this really bad news? I’m fairly certain this is just to free up capacity to build their future EV’s here for the tax benefits.
They woke up and got rid of the CVT in the Pathfinder.
This would be great for consumers since Japanese built cars have much better reliability. Even Toyota and Honda reliability has been slipping in recent years.
The Koreans should do the same too. The Hyundais and Kias built in Korea have less problems that need to be recalled than the ones built in the U.S.
So cheaper prices on parts could mean a much less reliable vehicle overall. I know a lot of parts such as cooling system parts that were for years metal are now plastic, and over time the heat causes them to crack which leads to leaks and an overheated engine and you stranded along the road. And in freezing temps and todays so common criminal element is not something I want my wife and kids to experience.
Your thumbnail picture looks like you were just given the news that you lost your first child.
It's only a car.
Murano Hybrid coming end of 2025. Tell me Kirk, it is so!
Toyota is just stayinh afloat? What does that mean? Afloat where?
if they dumped the cvt nissan would be a top contender but they never will
Nissan knows the majority cannot afford $45,000 vehicles. $30,000 yes. Nissan realizes it is better to sell 100 cars at the lower price than 25 cars at the higher price.
It only makes since Nissan moves it’s products back to Japan and only build three vehicles in America
-Versa
-Sentra
-Altima (if it’s doesn’t become discontinued)
Now if they Maxima comes back as an electric then sure it can be built in America too
Frontier must be made here for chicken tax purposes.
Also Pathfinder and QX60 need to be made in NA imo.
@@KirkKreifelsTotally forgot about the Frontier and the chicken tax ..
@@KirkKreifelsI think what they would do is probably keep the Pathfinder & QX60 here I also think they might move the Kicks to be produced in America but I’m hoping … Nissan might just close a factory for real
I would buy a J BUILT vs lease the Rogue as I do now.
Even American car companies leaving USA to make vehicles
Maybe a Nissan built in Japan would be more reliable
In certain ways but their crappy engine Nd trans
If manufacturing does remain in the United States, count on the quality of the product to dip exponentially due to the cost cutting measures needed by the suppliers whether it’s QC checks or its quality of craftsmanship or it’s quality of material they will remove that value from the product they are shipping as parts. 13:30
American built anything is pretty shoddy to say the least. My friends C8 has so many quality problems, it's too hilarious.
Regulations are making the US uncompetitive in manufacturing in all industries.
Nisan pricing structure is far below other Japanese in the US market. If they provided, better reliability, they could charge more. Nisans only sell due to price point.
Soccer moms are buying CR-V instead
I just rented one. Enough power but that floating center console was a pain. No room for manspreading of the legs 😂
haha. I've just started looking at so-called compact SUVs like the Rogue. I'm looking to update from my current Altima. But when I went to try the Rogue, I actually found the driver seat less roomy than the Altima. Happen to have any alternatives in the category that are better?!
If Mazda goes CX5 Hybrid I will buy. Their interiors are the best in their segment even though cargo space is minimal at 55 cubic feet.@@jefff7287 Best driving in their segment as well.
thanks uaw
well, maybe the workers should have built the things better, along with nissan having a bad reputation for bad parts.
All my cars start with a “J” when u look at my VINS
Can't blame Nissan for moving to save money. But it needs to translate to more desirable vehicles with better reliability. The sketchy CVTs need to go away.
i am waiting for yota to do same for their Ravs and camrys.
Impossible.
Never gonna happen Toyota quality in the us is just as good as Japan Honda for sure needs it crappy v6 bearings recall Nd 1.5 turbo blowing head gasket
the yen is at a record low right now. Japanese makers can easily build their cars 20-30% cheaper in japan than in the US while having Japanese quality reputation. Nissan is struggling, so having the car built in japan is an obvious choice. the other thing is that Nissan and a lot of legacy makers trying to compete with Tesla with price will have a tough time if they do not attempt to innovate in the actually manufacturing process. part costs and labor can be reduced if the EV manufacturing is optimized with new manufacturing techniques.
Heck, the consumer needs lower priced vehicles. They've increased at a rate much greater than inflation....where are the costs going up so much that justifies the price increases?
If Nissan would kick their unreliable CVT, they would likely have more of a loyal customer base. Right now it's one and done. Nissan does not have a large returning customer base. They go elsewhere.
not going to by another nissan. how about make cars reliably.
Toyota should buy their plant
Sienna being assembled in Japan doesn't seem feasible, that entire supply chain would have be relocated as well, no?🤔
No. They build TONS of Toyota vans in Japan.
Nissan hasn’t been the same since Renault took majority ownership in 1997. In my opinion the brand has been ruined by them.
Better quality Put together. All Engines is still questionable for Nissan.
Every business wants to make more money even if it sacrifices the American worker. That's just part of business. The Japanese made parts are better quality and craftsmanship is much better on average. For the consumer, it's great that more Japanese cars are actually Made in Japan. The cars are just not the same made from other countries other than their mother land. More power to Nissan to abandon the US production.🎉🎉
Please bring the tx production to Japan Lexus tx got a worst quality built ever
I’m not against unions or wage hikes but these unions better wake up it gets to a point of when do u stop ? Look at ur average fast food joint yeah they pay 15-19 per hour but look at the automation in those places American manufacturing jobs better wake up soon between the wage hikes and AI the world is a changing and not for the best
Japanese have takumi. They take pride in their work and are masters of their craft. US doesn’t have that.
I'll consider a Nissan when they break away from Renault 😬
I hope Honda removes all production from America. Because that seems to be hurting the reliability. making them so expensive too.
Also, Japanese build quality is pretty much a myth at this point.
