In Japan, partnerships are for synergies which is where automakers join forces in key areas to excel over the competition. For example, Toyota/Subaru/Mazda came out with their engines: Toyota with an i4, Subaru with a boxer, and Mazda with a rotary. The technology used in the engines were codeveloped to share parts and save costs, but the initial design and strategy is unique to each brand. When GM bought Pontiac, Chevrolet, Buick, Cadillac, and Olds, they never had this strategy. Well, they did, but everything was rationalized later on. Toyota wouldn’t rationalize though, because they don’t own the companies they are partnering with. They own Daihatsu but they even gave Daihatsu their own individual platform to develop cars with. This is how Japanese corporate partnerships work.
Now all Honda has to do is let me buy an FL5 Type R for MSRP. Seriously, I've been trying to buy one for more than a year and the best "deal" I got was $8,000 over sticker. As far as electrification, like most consumers I'm not interested. Hybrid yes, full electric no.

This day and age reminds me of the late 90s early 2000s when automakers teamed up: for example Daimler Chrysler Mitsubishi, Toyota GM, Honda Isuzu Rover, Nissan Renault, and Ford Jaguar Aston Land Rover. Some broke up, others stayed together till now. I wonder how the EV industry would fair out.

When you look at EV's from a different perspective, they are closer to a large mobile/ cell phone with wheels and a passenger cell than a traditional ICE vehicle. The software becomes the critical interface to an intuitive driver experience together with vehicle ride and handling characteristics. In Essence, it's a whole new world to travel and many will not make the distance.
I think the one benefiting the most is Mitsubishi because they are under Nissan’s control meaning that they were barred from innovating anything. But even worse, Nissan is quite clueless with themselves. Nissan has all the technology so I’m sure this is a mutually benefiting partnership. But I really think Mitsubishi is the happiest guy out of these three.

Curious that Honda and Nissan (2nd and 3rd Japanese car makers by revenue) are teaming up for EV development, whereas Toyota, Mazda and Subaru (1st, 5th & 6th) banded together to market ICE development (doesn't seem like an engineering alliance). (Suzuki (4th) sitting out by itself, although really it's in Toyota's orbit as well.)

I definitely see what you're saying, though -- Honda hasn't even been able to develop their own EV infrastructure yet. Hopefully Honda be able to have better competition with Toyota with all of these partnerships they've been building.
Negative take is the SDV. I've never heard of a normal customer that actually wants that. But the positive take is that I do believe Nissan actually has a good R&D team, the only bad points are the Jatco CVT and general implementation. The VQ, VC turbo, E power, and their EV technology is pretty advanced, so I think they will have a lot to offer on the engineering front
A lot of folks are confused about this whole topic. This new alliance is mainly focusing on building EV cars. 😂 Nissan needs Honda to push the agenda further. Plain simple. Both 3 automakers are struggling due to inflation.
Nissan has the technology for driverless cars and electrified power trains. The only problem is that they don’t apply it to their models like they should. Honda on the other hand uses their hybrid technology and is working hard to develop their driverless technology. So obviously Honda would get ahead although Nissan has it all. Nissan needs to really push ahead. Meanwhile Mitsubishi is probably only allowed to innovate the body on frame vehicles.

If I were a Japanese auto executive at either Honda or Nissan (or Mitsubishi), I would try to focus my company's product development (especially new energy vehicles) towards the US and away from China (even if the Chinese car market is largest or second-largest). The Chinese government will do everything in its power to close China's markets to Japanese car makers. This is doubly true after having poured tens of billions of Yuan through subsidies/grants/no-interest state loans to China EV producers. Chinese manufacturers will compete, especially in their domestic markets, on price and price alone, with little regard for quality, reliability and post-sale service. This is antithetical to the Japanese business practice.
I don’t agree. Japanese car brands are still respected in China and heck, the Sylphy/Sentra is China biggest ice seller. I think Japanese automakers should partner with locals for EV tech instead of developing it themselves because that would make the Chinese be neutral towards Japanese auto brands seeing they are using Chinese technology, and the Japanese don’t have to waste development on technology the Chinese would steal anyways. It’s a win win.
They need to come up something cheap like $15000 USD with a driving range of 1300 mile with a fully charged battery with a full tank of gas like BYD. It’s easier said than done.
In my opinion, Nissan is a better partner for Honda than GM. GM has always been a notoriously bad company to partner with, just look at what happened to Isuzu and Suzuki in the US. And with Mitsubishi on board, it would be even more beneficial since they could get access to Mitsubishi’s PHEV technology, something that Honda hasn’t been known for. And it’s not uncommon for partnerships like this to be widespread nowadays in the auto industry.

Honda partnered with GM for more than just the current GM built products on the market which no one seems to understand, GM is still building the Acura/Honda EV models until they can do this own their own.
Japan's problem is the lack of software development, which is essential for EVs. To compete with Tesla and BYD, Japan would be better off partnering with software developers.
They both have things that Honda desperately wants and needs to remain a viable manufacturer. Their shareholders are demanding that they make changes. They’ve got to act quickly.
Bring back the Lancer Evolution and 240SX. Get Nissan as far away from CVTs has possible. Normal transmissions will help Nissan. Co-develop new 4 cylinder engine with more low end torque and will ALWAYS come manual/automatic transmissions. Help Mitsubishi with build quality and add more power to engines.
Honda’s reliability has never been consistent. They can’t make a reliable automatic transmission to save their life, and they have been paying millions on warranty claims on their failed 1.5T engine for oil dilution issues. Honda’s reliability isn’t the flex you think it is.

Toyota is so big, but they still do team up occasionally when they are inspired to. eg. Toyota+Subaru BRZ. also, there was for a little while Toyota+GM working on robotic manufacturing. Toyota-BMW Supra is also pretty cool.

Curious that Honda and Nissan (2nd and 3rd Japanese car makers by revenue) are teaming up for EV development, whereas Toyota, Mazda and Subaru (1st, 5th & 6th) banded together to market ICE development (doesn't seem like an engineering alliance). (Suzuki (4th) sitting out by itself, although really it's in Toyota's orbit as well.)

@@josias.qr25 maybe, the Ariya is more affordable but is still a fairly mid quality (in true Nissan fashion lol) electric car. I definitely see what you're saying, though -- Honda hasn't even been able to develop their own EV infrastructure yet. Hopefully Honda be able to have better competition with Toyota with all of these partnerships they've been building.
Negative take is the SDV. I've never heard of a normal customer that actually wants that. But the positive take is that I do believe Nissan actually has a good R&D team, the only bad points are the Jatco CVT and general implementation. The VQ, VC turbo, E power, and their EV technology is pretty advanced, so I think they will have a lot to offer on the engineering front

A lot of folks are confused about this whole topic. This new alliance is mainly focusing on building EV cars. 😂 Nissan needs Honda to push the agenda further. Plain simple. Both 3 automakers are struggling due to inflation.
Genuinely interested in what EV innovations will come out of of this.
Nissan has the technology for driverless cars and electrified power trains. The only problem is that they don’t apply it to their models like they should. Honda on the other hand uses their hybrid technology and is working hard to develop their driverless technology. So obviously Honda would get ahead although Nissan has it all. Nissan needs to really push ahead. Meanwhile Mitsubishi is probably only allowed to innovate the body on frame vehicles.
Nissan Japan has Serena e-power Luxion Autech with 2nd gen pro pilot. Too bad it's still non-existent in the USA

These don’t always workout. Too many hands on any project hinders beyond 12-15 people. That’s why large companies fail to innovate like young start ups. Think young Tesla or Rivian.
I hope they do like VW group where they share the same engines & platform but still allowing each brand to keep their identity.

If I were a Japanese auto executive at either Honda or Nissan (or Mitsubishi), I would try to focus my company's product development (especially new energy vehicles) towards the US and away from China (even if the Chinese car market is largest or second-largest). The Chinese government will do everything in its power to close China's markets to Japanese car makers. This is doubly true after having poured tens of billions of Yuan through subsidies/grants/no-interest state loans to China EV producers. Chinese manufacturers will compete, especially in their domestic markets, on price and price alone, with little regard for quality, reliability and post-sale service. This is antithetical to the Japanese business practice.

I don’t agree. Japanese car brands are still respected in China and heck, the Sylphy/Sentra is China biggest ice seller. I think Japanese automakers should partner with locals for EV tech instead of developing it themselves because that would make the Chinese be neutral towards Japanese auto brands seeing they are using Chinese technology, and the Japanese don’t have to waste development on technology the Chinese would steal anyways. It’s a win win.

They need to come up something cheap like $15000 USD with a driving range of 1300 mile with a fully charged battery with a full tank of gas like BYD. It’s easier said than done.
In my opinion, Nissan is a better partner for Honda than GM. GM has always been a notoriously bad company to partner with, just look at what happened to Isuzu and Suzuki in the US. And with Mitsubishi on board, it would be even more beneficial since they could get access to Mitsubishi’s PHEV technology, something that Honda hasn’t been known for. And it’s not uncommon for partnerships like this to be widespread nowadays in the auto industry.

I got confused with the "SDV" acronym. I always thought of SDV as a SEAL DELIVERY VEHICLE. I wish the auto industry chose a different acronym and not re-use the SDV acronym. That's all, I'll get over it.
I mean, Honda was stupid enough to partner with GM and that was obviously a failure, so partnering with Nissan at a broader capacity was kind of expected. They both need each other at this point to face up against Toyota and especially against the Koreans! Problem is, there are rumors that Toyota and Hyundai will expand beyond their hydrogen development partnership, so things are bound to get very interesting!
GM’s problem is: They keep making junk, Honda should have teamed up with Nissan to start with, since Toyota is always there enemy! 😅

Honda partnered with GM for more than just the current GM built products on the market which no one seems to understand, GM is still building the Acura/Honda EV models until they can do this own their own.

Honda’s reliability has never been consistent. They can’t make a reliable automatic transmission to save their life, and they have been paying millions on warranty claims on their failed 1.5T engine for oil dilution issues. Honda’s reliability isn’t the flex you think it is.
They will probably also share the next generation e awd system that replaces the mechanical real time awd system.

Honestly I think Honda will do fine with Nissan over GM, because Honda’s reliability is just better like Toyota, now none of these companies have perfect reliability anymore due to recalls and other issues, but overall Honda can help Nissan build quality again, and Mitsubishi will definitely improve as well, they will be like how Hyundai is in this situation, since Acura and Infiniti will be like Genesis as well, so yeah Honda knew not go with Toyota for many reasons too similar and more expensive as well, and Kia and Hyundai are doing fine without the Japanese for help! 😁

Just saying Honda is like BMW they don’t just make cars they make motorcycles too; just to say one thing Honda would have acquire Studebaker and yet Studebaker selling small cars it will keep crushing the big three like it did in the past.
But yet the big three are afraid of facing Studbebaker making quality and now they struggle as Chrysler buy out every single brand even AMC.
One thing is going for is Stellantis that I think the smart move after acquiring GM’s European division is to sell the Chrysler brands to Toyota and that way they might even import some Ram pickup trucks from Thailand and sell it in the US and probably a Jeep military pickup truck will be come and import from Thailand and is based in the Hilux.
This is one yet to say Dodge will sell rebadged version of Crown sold as Diplomat or Royal Diplomat and even the Fifth Avenue; probably Lexus cars who are derived from the Crown might end up being built in Michigan.
As a whole Toyota will take over the US Military market by having Jeep replacing the Humvees as the official military vehicles including a Jeep Commando pickup truck being built in Thailand being similar to the pickup trucks used by terrorist but use for the American military.

Toyota is so big, but they still do team up occasionally when they are inspired to. eg. Toyota+Subaru BRZ. also, there was for a little while Toyota+GM working on robotic manufacturing. Toyota-BMW Supra is also pretty cool.
I bet more automaker collaborations will be happening. Its so expensive to build a car now and profits are thin. These companies are super in debt and markets like Europe and the USA are shrinking and Chinas brands are eating it up there.
