It's not CVT. It's the lack of e-power in the US. A bulk of the sales from Honda, Toyota, Kia, and Hyundai are hybrids. As for Mazda and Subaru, those have their niche, more like boutique or specialized purpose brands. Nissan has had the e-power for a long time in other countries, and I don't understand why the Nissan US is refusing to do so in the US.

Everyone should have seen this coming when Renault, of all companies, took control of Nissan. There's a reason why European mfrs, save the Germans, have failed in the U.S. market. They don't understand consumer tastes, have terrible reliability, and are only interested in cutting costs; all of it very apparent and leading to a death spiral for the brands.
At the company I led, we generally avoided and began reducing sales to Nissan because they only knew how to cut costs, all to the detriment of quality, innovation and supplier loyalty. Of all of the Japanese auto mfrs, Nissan probably has the worst supplier relations for this reason. Car companies are only as good as its suppliers, a concept that Toyota and Mazda understand very well. Honda less so, and Nissan not at all.
I have been a fan of Nissan/Datsun since the early '70s, and hope that they can somehow revive themselves. It will require a lot of self-reflection on what made them successful historically. Good design, high quality, strong reliability; products that consumers aspire to. If Hyundai/Kia can make the strides it made over the last 2 decades, so can Nissan.

A large ship wont turn quickly. But Nissan will turn. Its going to be a tough quarter-to-quarter, not month to month. Last quarter, Nissan pushed remaining inventory, cut dealer holdbacks, and drove incentives. Of course, we're going to see the financial impact of that this quarter... BUT ITS NECESSARY. Nissan at least has new product in the pipeline. Kicks will be out soon, and the new Murano next year. Recall, the Kicks was the new model where the stamping dies were stolen immediately after Ghosn fled Japan. Ghosn did A LOT more damage than you report and its going to take time to remedy that. You might ask WHY did Nissan produce the new Z instead of something that would sell better? Ghosn had pretty much killed off Nissan's Japanese development group years ago, handing everything to Renault including, yes, transmission development (CVTs). The Z was about reclaiming Nissan's culture internally, bringing in the older engineers to development that had stayed on, in order to revitalize the company. Not to make the best sports car or to build profit - it was about reclaiming their control and their soul as a company. New management greenlighted the e-Power hybrid system like Honda's, and its gone out to the ROW models first. This was after YEARS of Ghosn burying the updates for the Leaf. e-Power it will come here (2027 is 1.5 model years away - not 3). So, Nissan isn't a sinking ship. Its turning. And they're trimming weight to move faster. I'd actually be more worried about Toyota. Not only are there issues with their japanese associated businesses, but since they moved to Plano and lost a ton of their better engineering staff that didn't leave CA, they can't design a vehicle that wont be recalled and put on stop-order. And another recall was issued by Toyota within the last 48 hrs. Nissan at least has it better engineering staff ready and fired up, after shedding Renault (you noticed they cancelled the Versa - its a Renault design). Toyota's engineering groups are now under review from within, and that's always when people leave. Nissan already hit bottom. As soon as 2023/2024 Kicks inventory is cleared, the 2025 will begin shipment to dealers. And there's lots of social media advertising out now to push those sales. Check back in a quarter. Like everyone thought Mazda would die when Ford disowned it, Nissan will also fight back and be better and more profitable than the Ghosn years.

Thanks for a logical breakdown. One thing I’ve noticed, that I also think is a huge factor in the struggle to repair their reputation, is that there is always an underlying condescending tone to any Nissan review. Even before the Rogue switched to the new VC-Turbo engine, no one gave it the props it deserves. I sat in one again this past Friday and that thing is so nice inside! But not only that, it’s a solid all around product. The Rogue is a MUCH BETTER product than the RAV4 and CRV outside of not having a hybrid option. I know there’s issues with the new engine and I don’t take that lightly, but it is new technology and that’s the risk taken. Look at Toyota with their engine failures on their new V6TT. And the CVTs are much better at this point but reviewers ONLY complain about Nissan CVTs when most of their competitors also have CVTs.
But I agree. Ghosn did major damage to Nissan and unfortunately his departure has not helped to boost their reputation like I thought it would. Some even saying they’re struggling because he’s gone. SMH. Most don’t associate the failures Nissan endured during the last 10 years of his leadership with him, but pin it to the brand. It’s clearly an uphill battle out of the hole he dug.

From an industry insider: Mom and pop dealerships, save for small used only car lots, don't exist in 2024. They have been bought by one of a few large corporations that setup local monopolies. For example, Lithia Motors owns most of the dealerships in Texas, even though the dealerships themselves have individualized names, in total 267 dealerships are theirs. They made so much money stockpiled over the last several years, that one quarter of decline from historic highs is not a problem for them.

Never getting a Nissan again. I tried to sell my car back to Nissan and told them , if you cant meet this price i will be on my way, i don’t want to waste both our times. They said they can do it. They signed people up for sub-prime loans that had poor credit, now they can’t pay the loans & it’s repo city folks. Besides Nissan quality now in the toilet & they’re producing crap. No pun intended. (Always thought the Juke looked like someone’s bad dream). Yeah a shame, far from days of Datsun.

Nissan main issue is lack of CVT reliability. My 2006 Nissan Altima (regular automatic) was still running strong with 230k miles when I traded it in. My brother in law’s 2017 Nissan Note CVT only lasted 115k miles with twice replacing the oil on the transmission before taking a dump. Too many people got burned by Nissan CVT’s and the lack of general quality. Nissan has to do something drastic to change their reputation.

This is what happens when to these greedy dealerships that gouged the hell out of the American people during the Covid pandemic, I don’t feel sorry for these profit hungry people.

I hate this for Nissan because I have a special place in my heart for them. My first new car was an 84 Sentra. All Nissans are so fun to drive IMHO. But reliability does matter. Hard to watch.

I think the only reason they are below stelantis now is because stelantis has more power

Back in 2008 and 2009, greed took over and the cheap CVT they put in cars, cause so many customers to move to other brands because of the lack of transparency in honoring the Warranties for the CVT. Then Lack of design they did on all their car and infiniti too. Mr. Goshen also expose their issues.

I work for a car alarm installation company who installs alarms for all dealerships in our area. We've been talking about this. There are always installs requested from the other brands... Nissan has had the same inventory for going on a year, we rarely have new Nissans to install on at this point. The salesmen are struggling heavily, contractors for the dealership are struggling. In reality, theyre truly going down the tubes. The writing is on the walls. People don't even want them with dealer discounts. They've really killed their following. Too much conspiracy around the company as a whole. Nissan, Mitsubishi, Infiniti will eventually become a thing of yesterday. They've drained their wallets of future innovation because they screwed too many people. People aren't returning for another troublesome CVT. Thats what happens when you knowingly screw your customers for years. What we are viewing, is karma.
In my opinion, Hyundai/Kia will eventually follow if they keep selling cars prone to engine failure, fires and faulty transmissions. Reputation always catches up if you dont rectify.

This is crazy because here in Texas, Nissan just built a state of the art dealership in Abilene and that was not that long ago. It’s a super nice dealership… hope they pull through.

I feel bad for nissan they didnt listen to customers by ditching cvts and option for traditional automatic and having been making similar mistakes over the years they know what to do but decided to go their own way they want to choose cvts over their reputation even kia and hyundai are making huge improvement over the year even with many flaws
