- Hey everyone, welcome back to The Road to Superman. This is the web series where we follow all the latest updates and rumours regarding the Superman reboot. This is episode 22 and today we have a very important topic to talk about. Depending on who you ask, the pressure on the new Superman movie will vary. Some will say it only has to break even to be a success and others will say it needs to make a billion dollars and today I will talk about my thoughts on this subject.

Dude the boxoffice is dropping because they are giving g thr fans garbage 🗑. It has nothing to do with them making less than a billion. Marvel has been giving us a much of trash films lately. They keep on changing up characters and not sticking to the source material. That's why it's not grossing over a billion.
I get what you're laying down and I agree entirely. Actually I think DC could finally take the trophy from Marvel for good. Time will tell...
Marvel oversaturated the genre. Even DC will struggle under this. Then its superman, never was a boxoffice draw at all.
even so, If Superman is a good film, it won't be the failure of the film that warrants the box office, it will be the unjustified hate towards Gunn form the fans. all the hate towards Gunn is all from Cavill being let go, even though Cavill was brought back by the rock
I think this movie will have similar problems with The Batman. People hated the castings, suits, over abundance of characters, and many thought it would fail. But it came out, and everyone was wrong and it started a new universe. I initially HATED the fact that Pattinson was going to play Batman, but now he’s my favorite version and The Batman is my favorite movie of all time. I think Superman will do good enough, with at least 75% on rotten tomatoes and will probably make around $650-700 million and will probably have a budget of around $175-200 million. Gunn seems to be using cheaper alternatives, like building sets and giving small actor’s their big break.
My concern is Gunn. He is the writer and the director. Does he have the self-restraint to make a Superman movie instead of a James Gunn movie with a Superman like character in it? People are saying, "Look at guardians"... Well, guardians was never as well known Superman. I'm open to whatever comes along, but i simply do not understand the blind faith in Mr Gunn. His overly sappy interpretation of emotion and juvenile sense of hunour is not what a Superman movie needs imo. He needs to seriously raise his game, if he is capable of doing so. It needs to be an ernest and sincere attempt.
Oh be ready for all the penis and cum jokes as seen in his Suicide Squad reboot and Peacemaker..
And I'm not sure he has it in him.
I wouldn’t say millions well Snyder fans and possibly dc fans but they would be interested if it was a huge departure from the Snyderverse and is similar to the classic superman but at that point the name dceu is stuck with failure like by the time Shazam came out no one cared anymore that’s why the box office failed with bvs suicide squad and josstice league it killed people’s interest it got worse and worse like 2016 was the downfall year Snyder is just to unappealing to audiences and is too into his style and imagery that everything is thrown in even if it makes plot holes and becomes style over substance why make a film in a continuing failing universe than restart everything and regain trust and interest cause Gunn is more appealing to people cause of his guardians films and hell even his suicide squad film is a favourite for many not just fans sure cavil got screwed over cause I see where your coming from he is perfect for the role but he just stuck in a failed universe people see Pattinson and see a new Batman and they see cornswet and see a new superman they see cavil and Affleck and remember the Martha line and the cgi upper lip not the best things for that reputation
I don't think his restraint to make a "Gunn film" is an issue, of course a director will have his own distinct style of filmmaking, it doesn't mean he will make a "Gunn film" with a superman like character. making a film with a directors distinct style that undermines the character of superman, is exactly what Snyder did. Gunn only uses humor if it fits the characters, when Star lord's mother was dying in the first 10 minutes of GOTG 1 it was not funny. When the Guardians rushed to save rocket after the first fight with Adam warlock injured him was not funny. You're confusing the MCU's style of cutting seriousness with a joke, and Gunn putting in humor to express the characters not only for laughs but also to reveal the heart of the characters. That is why we have faith in Gunn because when it comes down to it, he wants to truly show the heart of the characters in his films. He took it upon himself to direct and write the film himself, He must have a specific story he wants tell, He stated that he wanted to tell a story that is true to the character of superman but is still different and new to be worth doing a big blockbuster about.
@@jjeteuati264 Gunn does let serious stuff happen but he doesn’t go overboard cause unlike Snyder he knows what he’s working with is weird and bizarre ideas humour is needed in theses flicks cause it’s a talking raccoon and a tree same with the suicide squad it’s a talking shark and a guy who shoots poka dots you can’t take that seriously as for superman that isn’t serious sure it has conflict and drama and Gunn can do drama more than Snyder cause well Snyder uses the image with no soul with fake art writing while Gunn puts the emotion and characters in to make the film work for Christ sake he made more people cry at a raccoon than people cried at cavil dying in bvs up by the end of the day superheroes are a bit odd and silly even the Batman questions this and jokes are needed to make the film not be too dry but I know Gunn will keep the heart of the character and drama that comes with him and that’s what makes me excited for this movie

@@user-be7tc2bd6e Zack Snyder's first two flicks, "Man of Steel" and "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice," had folks hyped because they featured Superman and Batman, two of the biggest names in comics. But, you know, just because those two did okay doesn't mean everything was smooth sailing for the DCEU. There were still some bumps, like not-so-great reviews and financial hiccups. Then came "Aquaman" and "Wonder Woman," and hey, they did pretty well! People loved 'em. But even with those wins, it's not like they magically erased all the past problems.
So, it makes you wonder, why would Warner Bros want to keep pouring money and effort into a franchise that's had its fair share of stumbles? I guess it all comes down to whether they see a bright future ahead for the DCEU, if fans are still hungry for more, and what their game plan is moving forward.

@@user-be7tc2bd6e Yea, but you should try to look at the bigger picture. MOS and Batman V Superman had every advantage a movie could have and they still underperformed. You cannot look at the Sucess of MOS alone as a reason to continue a failing franchise.
In my opinion if James Gunn's Superman doesn't do more than break even theatrically,it's a failure. Anything at or less than the combined production and marketing costs should be regarded as a failure. Especially because there's no home media safety net anymore.

As a long standing Superman fan, firstly thank you for your very fair and none bias videos. Quality stuff.
I have to admit, I was very excited for this movie and still kind of am… but the suit…. It not only underwhelmed me and the majority of fans, but it also shows me an insight into his thought process and quality process. It’s not even remotely close to what fans wanted or expected. It shows Gunn actually doesn’t have a remote clue what most fans want to see. Most fan edits of the suit and the real suit edits have been FAR far superior to the actual one released. How can this be possible? How can the guy whose job it is get it so wrong already?
I have zero experience in designing suits but my design would’ve have social media loving it. Very sad, can’t wait for it but I’ve definitely now lowered my expectations since the suit reveal.
If only Gunn can make a superman film that is respectable in every aspect, no petty jokes, no fairy tale endings, no naive unrealistic optimism, something that would show superman rising from a challenge through an awe inspiring moment with integrity and not via a danceoff or wtv childish diversionary tactics. But knowing Gunn Im sure he rather have his jokes and corny parent to child im-proud-of-you moments stand out.

I am DC Fan but it’s not our money. People are acting like DC doesn’t have financial issues. I like Cavill and MOS is one of my favorite movies but what WBD sees is historically Cavill did not bring in the money they wanted and he cost to much for the reboot.

I believe the pink sphere in the picture is Solaris. Gunn is inspired by All Star Superman: I believe Solaris was one of the villains in All Star Superman. Solaris has injured Superman and have blocked the yellow sun while fighting Superman; this is wear the damage on suit came from. I see a green light striking Solaris in the picture as well. Superman may be injured and weaken from the first fight. Green Lantern and others are distracting Solaris while Superman recovers. Solaris is overcoming the other heroes and weakened, Clark Kent witnesses they need his help. They need Superman.
⭐️ In this picture, a weakened Superman is putting on his boots for round 2, he beaten and injured but he is preparing suit back up to fight Solaris, who is blocking the sun, all odds are against Clark but he is the beacon of hope; he is Superman. Now in this photo Superman is preparing to give his all to save the other heroes and the world.
⭐️ I recently rewatched All Star Superman. Solaris and Lex plays a big part; and, I believe the other in heroes are replacing the fortress of solitude robots to fight Solaris.

I want to add, in the comic or animated movie of “All Star Superman,”Superman needs help from his robots to combat Solaris; Lex get power and is working with Solaris:
1. Well in the image James release you see a green light beam striking top of Solaris.
2. Instead of the robot, this is why you need all the other heroes; they replace his robots and are an integral part of the overall story. (Gunn said this)
3. Lex will probably trick the Engineer in finding the fortress. (Remember, there we report during the time of the Crest reveal, the Engineer was in the snow with Superman. She probably found the fortress of solitude and something to give Lex powers; and Lex some way made a deal with Solaris.
4. Gunn is taking inspiration from the New 52, All Star Superman and Superman All Seasons.
5. 🚨 Gunn should had waited and run the photo through post production before releasing to the public. (I think he released the photo without post because the media may get a bad picture.

Sorry but it already came out superman it's budget is more then 360 million $ that's more then man of steel it's budget. And it's not a solo Superman movie but an ensemble cast movie not a solo movie. Everyone hated Snyder's BVS because it had too many characters...!! while Gunn his Superman got double the characters and everyone is fine with that ?? WTF !!!

I agree with all the points you made in this video. This movie needs to do well, mainly because Superman is my all-time favourite superhero and it needs to warrant dropping Cavill and Hoechlin. That suit custom fix is badass!
I think the two biggest factors to Comic book movies failing is 1. Quality, most of the new ones from marvel and DC haven't been good. 2. Inflation, with the economy (especially in the US) its 50 bucks for two tickets. most people don't want to spend that much money at all on a movie and even less people want to watch it in theaters when it will be on HBO MAX in 6-7 months later. They really need to knock it out of the park to pull his vision for the DCU off.

Regardless of the money it makes, I think first and foremost it needs to be good and have the fans and the critics raving about it. That will lead into a much bigger box office in the second movie. Because the problem you have right now is that the DC universe is in such a state that it's going to have to earn back trust from everyone. You do that by starting out making a great Superman movie to open your new universe. But some people may not buy into it right away. So it may take a couple movies before they really get trucking financially. Got to earn the hearts and minds of the people back first. Simple as that. Once you have that, you can start making real money. Batman begins made under 400 million worldwide. The dark Knight made over a billion. So it does happen. And that was after a rough spot with Batman as well considering The Joe Schumacher Batman etc. The character was struggling as far as what they were going to do in the movies. They made a great first movie come back and then the second one blew up. And yes they had Heath ledger but still, that movie would have made Bank either way because it was amazing..
I appreciate your logic but it doesn't work. The DCEU since 2019 has had great reviews but has been terrible at the box office. The movie has to make 600M plus at least.

Guys, forget a little bit about DCEU, let's see what DCU will bring to the table, and then we will have a saying, bashing it while it's in the making is looking like children hide and seek type of games.
no matter what you liked about it, the dceu was straight-up a failure. A clean slate was needed, and Gunn is one of the best in the business. If anyone can deliver a great Superman movie and a great universe, its him.

People forget how much money the movies Zack was involved with made, hugely successful, in an time when the Marvel films were at their peek. MOS released, where we already had the first outing of the Avengers as a group and individual characters already had solo outings, some with more than one movie out at the time.
Very different to their counterparts, but a completely fresh look at the genre which has aged far better. Zacks contribution for WW1 as a co-writer along with Deborah and himself on board as producers also usually go unnoticed.
If the new Superman movie needs to do more than well, it needs to rejuvenate the whole genre if anything because let's face it, it's currently dead, Marvel hugely responsible for flooding the genre with shows and poorly made or rushed movies, and DC heads for thinking following that recipe was the way forward.
I really do hope it does well, more so because as a big Superman fan myself, I want to see the character loved as I have done. Both David and Gunn have some Huge shoes to fill, even the score needs to be on point, it's going to take quite something to top Hans Zimmers theme.

Ive been a huge Superman fan since i was a boy and Mr Christopher Reeve captured my imagination and made me believe that a man could fly.
I really want this new movie to succeed, not for Gunn's sake but for the character and his reputation.
The new suit is really a bad design that further confirms the mismanagement by Gunn.
Considering the terrible feedback regarding the dark and baggy on-loan MCU suit, you'd think that Gunn would get onto social media ASAP to clear up yet another mess he's created to appease the fans, but Gunn has proven to be a fool and a liar, he has no people skills to communicate via social media and he's run out of lies.

The unknown cast is a big problem for Superman. Holte is a good actor, but he is not a draw, and neither are the others. It is going to be tough to get audiences to turn out and especially if the PR continues to underwhelm. It's getting to the point where every image/clip has to be great, or the film could be DOA - especially if Corenswet does not show a Superman presence in the upcoming PR around him. WBD has to be panicking maybe? The social media numbers for Superman were not good and this reveal only complicates things. What happens if it becomes evident the film will do poorly? Will WBD try to salvage things and release it on streaming instead of putting 150 million into marketing a film that could be another Flash.
I just feel that the age of big box office Superhero films has passed. Audiences grow and change interests, become dissatisfied with the over saturation and failing quality of the subject matter until time passes and it becomes reinvented or fresh again. I think the decline of Marvel as a powerful film franchise is an example.
Despite the shill news outlets people have already been questioning gunns decisions since he announced the reboot.
I do not think it is for this movie possible to make more than $700M tbh. 1.Ticket sales are bad since covid, not only in the superhero genre. And you can watch the comfortable up to 6 months after the release in your home. Streaming is killing the box office and it is not even a question. 2.Fandom is splited in two parts that nearly hate one another and suit showcase showed that Gunn tries to appease everyone and I think that is the wrong approach that can lead to a film for nobody. Only Gunn making a movie with a quality of BB or TDK would proceed to break that wall, not even for this movie, but for its sequel and a new DCU as a whole. Even Dune 2, the best movie released since Barbenheimer in my opinion, made only $700M and literally everyone praised this movie.
That's a good point about Dune 2. If Superman isn't an overall masterpiece. It might not even sniff the MOS box office. Honestly Deadpool and Wolverine might struggle to get to a Billion due to the climate.
I’d say it needs to make $700 million to be a genuine success and a strong start. Also needs to be beloved by most people who saw it like The Batman
I'm feeling you on this. 700 to 925 million is my estimate. Over 1.1 billion may not be a good thing. Meaning, if the next DCU movie only makes 625 million after Superman brings in over 1.1 billion, then people will think the DCU is a flop already. That's why I think Superman needs to make under 1.1 billion. 3 things... it needs to be a really good Superman movie, makes a huge profit at the Box Office, and it sets up the DCU going forward. Audiences walks out of theaters, thinking I love where this is going, and I can't wait to see more.

Here's the thing.... superhero fatigue is in part due to people being tired of superhero movies, but it is also due to the MCU taking a HUGE nosedive in story quality since Endgame, in my opinion. And the DCEU never had that level of quality, aside from maybe Wonder Woman and Snyder's Justice League cut.
The challenges faced with Superman are many.
1) the DCEU's rep is low. Even with Gunn at the helm, it's going to take some really great movies to change people's perception.
2) superhero movie fatigue is a thing, thanks to the MCU.
3) Superman is not the type of character that is "in" right now. If you look at how popular John Wick movies, The Boys show, and the Invincible cartoon are, it's pretty clear what most folk want to see. The problem with Superman is if you present him how Snyder did, many Superman fans don't like it because he's too dour. Superman should be a beacon of light and hope, someone who smiles at those in danger to try and make them feel their is hope that all will be OK. Problem being, most people don't want to see a boyscout hero today, even if it is what Superman is all about. It's why most people talk about the best scene in Batman V Superman was Batman fighting the thugs in the warehouse.
The big problem is that being DC's flagship character and (arguably) the first superhero, if they don't do a Superman movie, then the new DCU starts on shaky ground. But, that ground is already shaky due to the DCEU's failure and what people are tired of seeing and what they do want to see.
My take is, I would NOT have had Superman be the lead off movie. Batman is arguably as popular as Superman and sell more comics. Wonder Woman left a good taste in people's mouths, at least until the travesty of 1984. Get butts in the seats and some good press going. Build the long term story like the MCU did with Thanos. After all, Marvel Studios started with Iron Man, who was far from Marvel's flagship character, right?
The, when things are moving along and there is a dire need for someone like Superman to save the day, he shows up, then gets his movie.
But, what do I know? I'm not a movie maker or a professional critic. I'v only been reading comics and watching movies for over 50 years.
If I was in Gunn’s position I’d do the same thing. So many DCEU movies flopped and there was so much behind the scenes drama that there’s no way the cinematic universe could live it down. Rebooting everything with a clearer vision is the much easier route to take.

I agree with all of your comments . Superman has to make at least $600 million at the box office to justify replacing 2 good Superman actors prematurely. Gunn's decisions make him look very egotistical and arrogant. He thinks his Superman movie is gonna be the best ever made, he doesn't care about replacing Cavill, and he thinks its ok to retain his DCEU actors/characters for his DCU, but then fire everyone else. These things upset me every time I think about his DCU, so I refuse to support his Superman film.

The first image was a huge miss by Gunn/WBD. Superman already has a lot of skeptics, and this reinforces doubts about the film. Why does the image look like a mediocre AI effort? Why is Superman not the focus of the pic - instead the orb is. The first image of Superman should lift us up, but this image drags us down. Gunn has done Corenswet no favors here. As it is Corenswet has a tough road to establish himself as the new Superman and Gunn has made that harder with this photo. No one at WBD had the good sense to put a quash on this? That is scary and raises questions about the quality of the film. With a cast not well known, cheap looking promos like this and a suit borrowed from the MCU Superman feels more like a TV movie. Better on Netflix or Max than on the big screen. WBD and Gunn need to do damage control sooner rather than later. Fantastic Four is doing everything right including a known, popular cast. WBD/Gunn keep stumbling and it's not impossible that Superman will be another Flash and bomb. This makes one wonder if Gunn was the wrong person to write/direct Superman.

You mention that superhero movies aren't as popular now, because of the lower box office numbers. But, I'd argue that the quality has dropped, and yes, even Marvel has lost their way.
That is true but I also think films like Blue Beetle are decent but no one watched it.
I feel that Gunn gets the amount of pressure both on himself and the film to do well, considering that, as you said, it's Superman. It's an uphill climb, but I feel he wouldn't take it on if he didn't believe he could pull it off, even if I personally am not completely excited for this universe yet. No doubt Zaslav and Warner Bros. as a whole hope that Superman is a four quadrant film like Top Gun Maverick that can get positive reviews AND be a box office win.
Genuinely think superman and Lois ending after 4 seasons was the best. CW was known for milking there DC shows to death. Flash is a great example. Went awful after season 3 but they kept milking it.
Like I said not every movie needs a billion dollars and In all honesty personally for me all I hope if the movie good and a success not just start a cinematic universe which in all honesty I don’t really care about to tell you the truth but that’s just my opinion.

I'm slowly starting to feel less butthurt over Henry's replacement and the jettisoning of the DCEU (which I felt was throwing a healthy baby out with a lot of bathwater). However, I'm getting slightly more excited for this new Superman, if only out of curiosity.
I imagine I'll feel similarly as I do to Matt Reeves' The Batman. I'll appreciate it, but I won't love it.

I think Gunn and Safran will be given a grace period coming off the disappointing end to the DCEU. Gunn and Safran will need to rebuild trust for DC movies with the audience. If the film is critically praised but does mediocre at the box office, the DCU will continue.

The first entry in DCU movies should have been "GREEN LANTERNS" because they usually travel through the universe, they have the potential to find a threat big enough at the end of their movie to grab the fans from the start and what to expect next

Good Reviews and a big fan base yes but they didn't support TSS in theaters and on streaming really only did so domestically. Peacemaker doesn't have great viewership numbers either. As for the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy, that benefited from both the IP being virtually unknown by even casual comic fans and being part of the MCU. Could it perform like the Batman? Sure but depending on the Production and Marketing budget, it could still fail to break even.
