Skaven vs Wood Elves in Athel Loren is peak Vietnam
When you're a new general in the empire and get to lead your first army against harmless ratmen, and the first thing you see at the battlefield is your spear and crossbow infantry get vaporized by railguns and literally nuked
You know Legend is enjoying himself when his inner Skaven comes out lol

I like how a typical skaven battle has more gunfire, explosions and wild shit going on than any battle in empire or napolean
Heroic victory with 13 losses. . . "We struggled with that. . ."
lulz
Why should I trust a Skavan warlock Engineer saying Skavan is fun? Of course he would say that!
imagine how this looks like from the random elf point of view: warp fire from above, tense suppressive gunfire in face, lots of rats rushing from underground, corpses of rats and fallen comrades everywhere...
this sucks so much when i think about it
And imagine the sounds of that horde and especially the smell. Must be an all around disgusting experience...
That description...is beautiful, yes-yes, we likes!
welcome to being an elf in warhammer. they are used to this
At this point, i probably have more hours watching your videos than actually playing the game myself.
I don't, but I will eventually haha. I suck at this game and it's so fun to watch Legend beat the shit out of the AI like its nothing while I struggle on normal and hard difficulty XD
“bUt LeGeNd”
That's CHEEEEESE
Legend: Cheese go brrrrrrrrrr
Legends: Too many poison wind mortars. They're good, but they have what's it called... what's the saying....
Me: Diminishing Return?
Legend: Depreciating effects.
Me: hmm... okay, close enough.
Exactly the same thing I thought
I also only see two poison wind mortars .. is two really too much tho?
@@spartanx1887 there are 3. 2 normal and 1 RoR. Legend recommends no mere than 1, he likes weapons teams more.
This is wrong Poison wind mortars are replacement of Plague Catapults so too many Catapults
@@Alej0xXx Mortars serve a different function than catapults, since Mortars can't attack settlement walls and towers.

This is Colonel John Orion, United States of Trees Army. Attempted evacuation of Athel Loren ended in complete failure. Death toll... too many.
Shaven are my favourite race. The legend approved doomstack feels like cheating.
I too like people who shave, and also people who use doomstacks in campaign

Hey legend! I explained in your stream the other day that As the Empire, the DE declared war on me, what should i do, and you said "fight them?"
I took your advice, I sent an expedition into Norsca to Lure them there, then used a load of cunning, and attrition to take out 7 dark elf armies in quick succession, Now they are Strength 3, Not 1 and keep asking me for peace. They aren't getting it haha!
Skaven are actually so amazing, so much fun to watch the fireworks
The "Save my disaster battle" starts with a fire-at-will disaster ecks dee
the closed captions are hilarious in this video so far! Bouncer power lol

lets hope the inquisition is right and skaven dont exist... imagine them kidnapping legend and making him their King of Plague-cheese - we'd be Do0Om3d! yes-yes (like with karrigan as queen of blades for the zerg)
there should be a video compilation of legend skaven voice
Would be interesting to see legend do a disaster from a Skaven player who DOESN'T have the DLC that gives the Skaven all these guns.
Fortunate Son plays as warpfire and poison globes explode overhead. "I love love the smell of warpstone in the morning yes yes...."
The Avalanche Mortars are easily one of my favourite units in the game. The amount of kills those bad boys can rack of up is insane
I love the grimy nature of the skaven.

"Diminishing returns?"
Poisoned Wind Contact Effect for them doesn't stack, thus it is not useful for having more than one or two. But even if you take two, you have to micro them, so they shoot different flanks.
@@DavisKrauklis yes, but the wording Legend was looking for was this
Diminishing Marginal Returns ;)
The mortars/catapults ended up well below 100 kills when all the others units get on average 110+
I think it's down to the AOE having diminishing turns - for each consecutive hit units take, they hit less and less men. When you're looking pure statistics - I guess more gun rats would be marginally more effective 🤷♂️
@@Dead_Fish0 maaaybe, problem is that this only accounts for casualties, not actual HP damage. The Guns might very well just mop up what the mortars softend up you know? Those mortars rarely kill on the first hit but rather inflict HP damage first. Just like those those tiny windblasts on skink priests dont get their kill count up but in the end do quite a lot.

Skaven is probably my favorite race to play as. Ikit Claw campaign is amazing
I'd take slightly less efficiency in the field by having 3 mortar teams when it means I can slaughter walled settlements all the easier.
Yeah walled settlements are the only thing that really sucks as Skyre. Sure you can basically massacre most of the garrison with the catapults and whatnot but if they got an army in there on top of a decent garrison it's really hard to kill enough just for the army loss penalty at which point you just have to cry and hope vermintides are enough since ratling guns suck for it, Jezz aren't amazing, and...yeah
The fire power of Skaven is SO GREAT.
That’s one of the reasons why I like the Skaven. And why they are my favorite faction.
"oh this is gonna be bad" *ratlin guns starts shredding* "oh actually it's not so bad"
I see skaven i press like yes-yes!
skavenblights greates-best inventor, yes-yes
Aah wood elves, definitely my nemesis in my own campaign. At turn 160 with ikit claw (VH/VH), 96 settlements owned, 9 brrrt armies and crushing everyone else...
on the map, they are a big green blob in the middle of my empire ! Lol
I have been at war 3 times with them since start, accepted 2 truces for gold previously after killed couple of their armies, but I still didn’t get into Athel Loren yet... exactly like Legend says, I wait to be able to regroup at least 4 of my armies to crush them from all fronts and quickly take their 5 settlements, wich are a pain to get such the terrain is rough for missiles army.
Actually my armies are dispatched in 4 corners of the map, chasing last settlements of Reikland in the north, crushing Chaos near the Hellpit, and kicking Mors asses in the south, I have 2 permanent armies on Athel Loren borders, i catch one of their elves armies here or there, but I never chased their settlements so far or enter deep within the woods.
I remember too well how wood elves have been rough to deal with in my first try campaign months ago with ikit claw, don’t do the same mistake twice, I will keep them from after Reikland is gone with swarms of angry missiles rats from every of their entry points in Athel Loren... it will be fun and bloody ! 😂 (but not yet, one target at a time, and the tricky one for the end. Best way to deal with Wood Elves)
GG here btw, clean victory legend 👍
Unable to establish some under-empire under them and coordinate a simultaneous nuking of their whole forest?
iniudan oh sure I could, it takes quite a while before reaching the point where the settlement blow up, but it’s always possible :)
Although, I have 4 armies on 9 who basically have no more targets or area to watch/control since Reikland fall appart.
So I am sending them all (5 in total), 2 by the west, 3 by the east, on Athel Loren and plan to attack around turn 165or166 (time for 2last of the 5 armies to join the party).
As they are all on the way, I will keep that idea first.
But to begin with, I will use the undergrounds if I can bait them to attack me within...
If really it fails, I will consider long term plan and under city to do the job.
Let say that’s a last option if the main plan fail.
WE have between 5/6 armies at any time on their 5 settlements of Athel Loren, but they are dispatched on all of them, so 5 doomstacks should do the job just fine, 2 by 2, from both directions.
But thx for the idea, I never used that in practice (always use undercities for money on wealthy cities only), but it’s a viable option... I will keep it in mind, just in case 🙂
SKAVEN BOY! LET'S GO
i like having avalanche and poison mortars. compliment each other nicely
Had anyone watched this with automatic subtitles?. I mean, Clan Square has such a powerful strength with just a little friendly fire
The bounce of power !
Skaven are at a massive disadvantage vs Wood Elves anyway but on the wood elf maps your weapons teams often won't even fire due to terrain LOS bugs. Even on flat or beneficial terrain on wood elf maps your weapon teams can't get LOS.
My favorite kind of sydb the skaven kind
The elves were not very favourite by autoresolve because of 3 units of hawk riders. Also several driads.
Skaven is the funnest race to play easily followed for me by the Tomb Kings
victory pleases council yes-yes!
Diminishing returns is the right term for the poison wind mortars overload.
You know... I remember back when Legend said 'I f**king hate skaven'. I'm so glad his mind changed. They're the absolute best to play. :P
this was also before ikit claw was put into the game and all the fun weapons teams where added that is what really changed his mind on skaven
@@Slyzors They were still fun to play, they just got... Moreso.
I love playing as skaven, probably my favorite race but I HATE fighting against them in campaign as other races. Makes for a long war.
I’m currently completing my first ME chaos campaign on legendary as Sigvald. Everything was going brilliantly until I just got ambushed by an empire 3-stack. I’ve tried 3 times to beat them and each time been SO close to winning against them! Legend, I might have to send this one to you for help if I can’t beat it soon. I am having a hell of a lot of fun with it though. The battle is super tense! 😂
Melts them! Eats them like soup!
Legend is Skaven’s greatest-best general yes-yes!!!
Easiest is to first-strike the Oak and afterwards you get the 'Immune to Athel Loren attrition (All Armies)' trait. Afterwards it still sucks to fight against Athel Loren but at least there's no attrition anymore.
Skaven are best cheese
what does Legend and skaven have in common?
they both lik-like the cheese yes yes!
Warlock General
1 Priest
2 engineers
4 rattling guns
4 jezzails
4 mortars
4 artillery
My core default skaven army.. sometimes Ill have minor deviations to counter races like lizardmen (catapults are useless against them).. with the 2 engineers, your range gets absurd and even your jezzails wont run out of ammo.. once your general is on a doom wheel, you really don't need another tank. Most armies are wiped out before I even need to whip out the plague preist..
Purple Mortars are also a super good RoR
I think Wood Elves are going to be OP after the coming DLC. That’s not a bad thing.
Skaven yes yes 😂

Biggest problem with this campaign why is the food in green
I disagree on there being too many poison wind mortars. PWM are so useful in sieges and at a certain point in a campaign siege battles seems to account for at least 80-90% of your fights. With 3-4 PWM you have enough ammo to almost completely destroy any garrison + army currently encamped in a settlement.
Maybe don’t bring so many when you attack the Wood elves, but in a general army it’s great to have more than one. Just knock out the towers with catapults and wipe out everything with the PWM. Don’t have to destroy walls for your rattlings to shoot, don’t have to sit their bored while the rattlings miss almost all of their shots against units on the walls. The arc of fire for PWM is also much better than catapults allowing you to hit almost units regardless of where they are in a settlement.
You can use Plague Periests to kill ther garrison witrh Plague. Having more than one mortar is overkill 90% of the time and thay are pretty hard to use on field as they are prone of frienly-fire and terrain-sencetive.
IDK man can the range of plague even hit units far back in the settlement? PWM make sieges effortless. They can hit pretty much everything while being out of harms way. Even if they only graze a unit the DOT still goes off. As far as friendly fire I’ve never had a problem with it. It’s rare anything gets past the summons, lord, and priests in a field battle which become fairly rare in campaigns once everyone has walls.
Rattling guns feel far less effective in sieges. Which are the most common type of battle in a campaign.
@@dtt719 I will say - if you need to kill units way back in the town square, you already done fucked something up. The only thing I would say plague spam cant kill are goddamn tomb kings because of so many large single entity units in their garrisons.
Or maybe I'm just unlucky. :/
Never had a town resist 4 priests and 1 PWM. TBF, most can be autoresolved for negligable casulties after a while...
Legend's a better player than me but I reckon he underrates poison wind mortars. They're the best unit in the game for clearing defenders off walls during sieges.
He doesn't underrate them. It's just that they deliver most of their damage with a status effect applied to the enemy unit. You can only apply it once at any given time so a second (or more) unit goes to waste unless you really intensely micromanage their targets.
@@vindik8or yes, and the thing is that, as such, in "out in the open" battles, they loose efficiency, and with the fact they can utterly nuke your own meatshield they are a very micro-intensive weapon.
However, and that's what Gavin was pointing out, they're the best skaven siege tool by an exceedingly long mile. Ratlings and jezzails direct fire make them especially poor at shaking off troops on ramparts, and skaven artillery isn't that good at it either. On the other hand, three mortars, even with only one engineer is quite enough to wipe pretty much any garrison, even with reinforcements, and the slow pace of sieges allow you to micro them perfectly.
So, running three mortars might be a bit of a loss in land battles, but it genuinely pays for itself with siege.
@@gaslar3328 Winning sieges quicker is a poor trade-off for busting down your field capability. There's no need to snipe ramparts if you just demolish them with artillery and mop up with weapons teams - it just takes a bit longer.
Also, try lining up the walls with the maximum range of your Jezzails. The ballistic arc will make them reasonably effective at hitting stuff on walls. As long as you don't try to hit units above gates they'll do alright.

Because the mortars come in the Eshin Clan DLC.

Skaven are by far the worst army to fight against.
FIRST! *sKAVEN lAUGH*
i dont like warhammer because range units do absolutely no damage. if this was shogun 2 the battle would of ended in 30 seconds with all those guns.
That just makes no sense, because in TWWH2 ranged units and artillery are only second to single entity monsters and lords in terms of impact on the battlefield.
great battle cheese champion! i really can't stand the wood elf, they are just annoyng op broken faction. game would be better without them.
