This is the second video in a series of fixing our leaky wall. As many folks pointed out in the first video ( • The LEAK was SO much w... ) I fixed the wall but didn't fix the leak. I need to re-install the door, and redesign the porch, but since it's so cold and snowy outside I decided to build an awning. It will decrease the rain exposure on the door, and I can do most of the construction indoors.
This awning is build out of off the shelf Douglas fir 4x4 post, and uses some basic timber frame techniques to assemble it. It's a great DIY project. Plans for this build are in the works! Join the mailing list to be notified when they are ready: www.almfab.com/newsletter

Man builds sturdiest awning in the world
Taking tips from Bourbon Moth 😁
Wrong, he builds the strongest awning of the US. This is standard everywhere in Europe. But still nice work, don’t get me wrong
Snow is heavy!
While I won't likely ever make this project, I learned a very valuable lesson: The moment you pin nailed the roof template together to test out the look, angle of cuts, etc, my mind expanded. Make test pieces based on referential measurements!!!! Thank you for leading by example here :D
Make test pieces for everything. I'm a cabinet maker apprentice and one of the first things I learned, was that furniture makers always make test pieces in the cheapest wood available, no matter what we need to do. If we need to set up a saw, drill press, router table, etc. Then we use a piece of pine/fir to test our settings until we've reached the desired measurements and only then do we take our actual work piece. It's a great way to make sure that all fuck ups happen with cheap wood and not the expensive wood destined for gorgeous woodworking
As others have mentioned, it could use some flashing done which goes under the siding and over the roof to divert the water. Otherwise it will leak between the roof and siding.
Hi Michael, fellow Seattleite here. Hope you survived the ice storm! Love your videos and always appreciate when you admit you might have done something wrong. Keep up the good work!
Very nice! Major tip for hand-planing with that style plane - point your index finger (the one holding the plane's wooden handle/tote) forward like a finger gun. Helps your wrist and overall body mechanics keep the plane straight!
Good to know! Thanks!
Dang that is really neat. Reminds me of some stuff I teach people who are learning to skate.
12:37 if you use a smaller drill bit there, your offset will be perfect every time and you wont have 2 indents that might lead to mistakes. just go 1 or 2 bit sizes below the hole size, press them against the side of the hole you want to draw the board to and indent with that :)
That's a neat idea! Thanks 👍
Hey Michael! I’m a framer who dabbles in wood working. I love watching how you guys approach framing with your woodworking tools/shop opposed to how maybe we would on a job site. Keep up the good work! Very entertaining : )
Thanks Jeff! I’m sure it’s obvious I never had a job as a framer, but I love messing around with framed structures. The more I learn about framing the more I want to do it. Glad you enjoy watching my version of it 😂
Don’t sell yourself short! You could walk on any job site 🤙🏼
Sheesh. This is what happens when a *cabinetmaker* does carpentry. I love it: "..sneak up on the cut, to get it right..." and "...glued draw-bore tenon pins..." even on a joint that takes nearly zero loads in tension. Michael you can't help yourself. You build for the ages, even when it's a simple, short-term mitigation measure for water intrusion!
Hahaha! Gotta challenge myself
100 years from now the entire house will be crumbled into dust but that awning will still be there. 😊 Looking good Michael!
Great video, Michael! I always love your woodworking projects! As long as you haven’t roofed it, when we get some good weather it might be worth removing the plywood above the gable roof you built, and flashing it correctly. Your good work will last longer! Thanks so much for your videos!
Given where it is it wouldn't be worthwhile - it's essential..
Michael, please come to the Maker Camp Timber Framing event in July at the Blackthorn, led by Justin Dietrich. It is clear that you will enjoy it and your help will be welcomed. The timber frame pre-build is nice because it’s the only focus of the weekend, without all the distractions of the full Maker Camp event.
I love the videos that are 30 mins long. I like to sit back and relax and slowly watch a project come together. Thanks for taking time and effort to make all your videos! ❤️
I'm over in Spokane and know how crazy the weather has been for the Seattle area. Stay safe, stay warm. I've got a few of these awnings to assemble for my new shop. I'll be taking a few elements from your design.
Great job! Get well soon! Thank you for sharing the process!
Great video, Michael~! Very nice looking functional feature for the shop. Can't wait to see the finished project. Thanks for sharing it~!
Dusty Lumber Co. is a bridal joint ninja!
Glad you explained why you were using the plane. I raised an eyebrow when I first saw you using it to cleanup the leftover of your table saws depth limit, and was about to comment on better ways, but no need. Good to see you using tools just because, and not for the sake of expediency. Looks and sounded like you enjoyed yourself in this build. Projects should be utilitarian and satisfying for the maker. That’s what working with your hands and brain in today’s world is all about. Good job!
Feel better soon! Awesome build… Fantastic joinery… Happy holidays… Best to you and yours.
Master carpentry ! So well explained ,very illuminating video ,well done, thanks !
Really great work on this project. Enjoy following this one to the end
Looking great, Michael. I like your Shaun Boyd impression testing the strength of the assembly.
Bill
Very nice work Michael. As in all your tasks, you do splended work. Don' forget, caulk is cheap.
Looks awesome!! Hope you feel better soon!!
Merry Christmas to you and Ashley...and I hope you get better!
Feel better and enjoy your Christmas! Can't wait to see the follow-up.
Loved the build Michael. Get better soon and Happy holidays!
Nice build!! I use your low math layout method on lots of my projects.
Nice job on the timber frame awning Michael! Thanks for sharing the video with us!💖👍😎JP
Great job! Super sturdy build. I love it.
Hope you feel better. I totally feel your pain. The up and down of the weather has messed with my body. Currently it's -1°F here it'll warm up to 2 or 3 by dawn LOL! It was -8°F this morning and I love in KY.
Beautiful stuff 🤘
Merry Christmas!! Thanks for always putting out awesome videos.
I watched this when it first came out. I'm watching it again today, because I need to build it. On a house that has identical siding to the siding you have (except ours is crappy off-white, and we're on the other side of the state). Really grateful to your videos - I'm feeling confident enough that my partner and I can pull this off.
I really like that siding! Do you know who makes it?
Feel better and Merry Christmas.
Merry Christmas 🎄 Michael!
That is a fine build, and a well produced video. I enjoy watching videos where I see some of the same makes and models of tools I use. Thanks for posting. Cheers!
Definitely one strong awning! That freezing rain was nuts! Hopefully you stayed home and are feeling better!
Feel better Happy Holidays!
Excellent video, commendation and craftsmanship. 😊
Looking so great! Hope you feel better soon!
Thank you!!
Excellent Michael. Merry Christmas
This was so so good! So many ahah moments. I said out loud alone in my house "Oh come on!" when you showed how you measure by stacking up the parts, measuring what's left, and then dividing. I'm like mad at my self for never thinking like that HA! That tip is gonna eliminate so much math for me. Thank you!!!
Merry Christmas 🎄 and may the New Year 🎉 bring many more great tips and projects.
Nicely done
Great work!
Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year to you & yours. Take care & stay safe!
This was a great video. I just love how simple you made it look to cut the bird's mouth on your rafters. I'm not knocking anyone who would use a framing square to figure out the angles, but it was just a simpler way to find the angles for me.
Exactly what I want to do for a few door openings. Thanks.
Get well soon Michael 🙂 Happy holidays ☃️🎄❄️👍
"I had enough time with the handsaw" is exactly how I feel after doing a few joinery with hand tools
Framing done by a fine woodworker! 😅 This awning will most likely outlive the house! ✌️
Hope you’re feeling better!
Get well soon!
nice build, take care of yourself and get gooder, Happy Holidays
Love the video looking at doing something similar to my front porch, get well soon And have a good Christmas and New year
Looks Awesome , the bridal joints came out beautiful. Have a great holiday season🎄
glad you got that up before this morning's ice fiasco across the city
For real!! It's a mess out there
Looks great! Hope you feel better soon and happy holidays!
Thanks Mary! Happy holidays!
Love the timber framed look! Had to laugh when you used the 1-2-3 block as a straight edge! Definitely making notes about the tricks you did for relative measurements! 👍 Great job! Looking forward to the next video on this!
Thanks David! I grab whatever straight edge is closest to me at the time 😂
It’s always a good day when I get a new Alms Fab video
Awesome project. 👍
great video ,i enjoyed that. merry christmas.
Can't help but be reminded of the actor Peter Sarsgaard everytime I watch a video, you guys are doppelgangers.
That’s actually very nice great build. I just got a rigid 13 inch planer for Christmas and am excited to use it Merry Christmas from Portland
Good thing you built this before this week.
Nice work merry Christmas to you and your family 👪
excellent video
Very Nice workmanship Michael, The brackets look like a hugh "A" as Alm,,Nice
I hate trying to flash-in T1-11. There aren't a lot of good ways to do it. For this, I think would trace out the siding where it meets the rafters, add room for the roof deck and shingles and slide up my step flashing before patching in the siding and re-attaching the timber frame.
@ Len Smith
That was my concern as well. The area between wall and first rafter is going to be highly susceptible to rot. I know he used that Halcyon finish on the awning, but that T-111 siding is going to keep on doing what it did before.
OTOH, the area under the awning will look nice for a good while.
Re:miter stand future project, I really like the t-track stop block without a fence approach, and on my last miter stand I totally did it post build, router with a straight edge guide.
I totally want to go that route! Thanks 🙌
Wow! I have to say, Amazing and Thank you!
Just love hand tools and the Shinto rasp is just a great tool.
Amazing. Thank you
Storm destroyed my cheap awning so I think I might be copying this with some alterations. Love the support structure though 💯
Was just writing a comment about that screw angle not pulling the joint together then you figured it out.. well done. Not sure how you figure that the bevel cut at the bottom of the upright throws water away from the building - it doesn't.. it just makes it look less clunky, a transition from one plane to another..
Re: the rafters - all you need is the pitch (which you knew) and the dimension of the outside edges of the brackets and you can figure out the joinery with math.. Top tip - when drilling, flip the rafter up the other way and drill thru the intersection of the birdsmouth so you make sure your hole is there - no layout required
good work m8
I’d recommend cutting the beams and ridge flush with the outside of the last rafter and then fitting the fascia over the top. It doesn’t look as pretty but will stop moisture sitting on top and rotting out the ends, even with multiple coats of water based varnish it’ll be a week point. Replacing the structural parts in years to come is more of a pain than replacing fascia.
Amazing, Michael! Fantastic work! 😃
Looking forward to see you finishing it!
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Merry Christmas and happy new year!
"Still really snowy." *shows a half inch of snow*
I'm glad I live here and not somewhere where the snow gets deeper than I am tall.
take good care
imagine being alm`s neighbor and getting spoiler of the new videos everyday.
Very nicely done! Good work with the hand tools.
By the way, what are those lights you've got for your outdoor shoot?
Not to undermine the importance of the damage to your property, but coming back to it after seeing what's been going on with Laura Kampf's house seems like a minor thing 🤣
Looks really nice, not want to annoy you since you took it so far now.. but shouldn‘t the roof be on an angle by it self? Or are you compensating for it with the decking.. (otherwise water/moisture could still end up at the door frame..)
I commend you on the build, but as a timber framer, I wonder why you didn't use the mortise and tenons on the braces? And why glue your joints? If you use the dowels to join them together, they will never come apart. Barns have stood for hundreds of years with this method.
Still, a nice job and the wood is beautiful. Cheers!
Do the flashing when you re-do the siding around the door. Or while you are building the awning. Best to do both. Not after the awning.
Great video about your project, and like others here, it gave me some new ideas. Thanks. By the way, your Jackery is a battery, not a generator.
It is weird that somehow that has become the industry term for those battery/ inverter units. I think it is because they are generally used in a situation where you might use something like a Honda EU2000 so they are maybe trying to make that link to consumers. I guess they are also considering the combination with solar as actually generating electricity. Just as an additional note, I have dealt with one of these units in a not-sponsored professional situation and I was pretty impressed with it.
Brilliant! Now the rain water is diverted directly onto the stairway and the people using the stairway. Build quality like this is deserving of a 1920's Craftsman house, not a box building like this.
I put a gutter on it.... Watch part 2
@@MichaelAlm good .
For a moment at the end there, I thought I was watching Jason at Bourbon Moth!
Greetings from the BIG SKY.
Even though the look would be very different , I would have made the awning a single slope matching the roof line .
Single sloped in that all the water and snow shed would be off to the left and none coming onto the steps.
Hey Michael, you really want to look into flashing between your siding and this new frame ;-)
Thanks! I have a plan 🙌
I used to have that chop saw. I "upgraded" to a sliding compound saw. What a mistake. I miss the accuracy of that little Delta. 😭
I'm stealing your air compressor setup ;)
Such a coincidence, during that period it was also December at my hometown.. "it's December in Seattle..."🤪
Say he's back....Roof time😃
Do you foresee any issues with the rain running off onto your stairs, even with a gutter, could cause a slip hazard?
@30:54 would it be better to angle this build entirely one direction to the left?
I can't imagine runoff onto the stairs would be good.
That or a gutter will be added to the stair-side roof edge.
I know that you have to work the sponsor in, and I fully support you having sponsors, especially excellent products that can be genuinely useful like Jackery and a portable battery, but when you used it with the heat gun and there was an outlet Right behind you in the video beside the door, I burst out laughing, haha. 😂 Keep up the good work! I love your content. ❤
