My video on grief in art history: "Grief in Art" - czcams.com/video/X8SpEw784H8/video.html
Toulmouche gotta be one of the first European artists to *actually like and respect* the women he painted
Was going to say this myself! He really shows that he appreciates women for being WOMEN. The things they do, the way they dress, the differences they have in how they treat others and themselves how they are treated by society. Just a fascinating collection of work
Shame these kind of artists are so rare
@@alicebell4123*were
@@curiousKuro16 That sounds kinda creepy when you phrase it like that.
@@firelordeliteast6750 How else would it be phrased?
Sometimes it really is a shame how photography slightly cheapens realistic paintings these days. This painters attention to how light shifts on satin is a CRAZY flex, it looks spot on!
@@ExpandDong420modern realism always looks like an astonishing feat, but often doesn’t hit like older realism. Like when realism was the predominant and expected style, artists put a lot of care and emotion into the composition and physicality of the models they were working with. Modern realism is often more about the feat of technicality than conveying anything additional with it, so it can fall a bit flat for me. Of course, exceptions exist in all cases and a lot of older art is what has been liked and thus preserved over time so it colors our perception of artistic quality of the times.
What really gets me are all the crinkles and folds mixed in with the lighting, these realistic shifts in the satin itself with how she adjusts her posture
@@ExpandDong420 It did! For it’s time, that level of skill would have been highly valued. It shows how trained the artist’s eye is to pick up on color and shape. Realism before film capture required countless hours of study and life painting. It still does, but we have a massive amount of reference to pull from via the internet and photos we can take ourselves. You don’t have to worry about lighting changes or shifting objects when you can just snap a picture and work from that. What I mean by my original comment is that in the common day, we’re so used to seeing photography that seeing a photorealistic painting doesn’t enchant in the same way it used to. You see this effect in the industry, where photorealistic illustration had fallen out of fashion in favor of cheaper, quicker photography and photo editing. It’s not very often you see a beautifully hand drawn book cover anymore because of this :(
It doesn't, rather I think if it devalues art, the art itself has degraded, I mean photography is limited by the constraint of the law of physics, and art is more flexible in this regard to convey a message, that is if it has a message, idk if you're referring to hyper-realistic or not, but I do find the type of "arts" to be shallow, despite the masterful craft and practice the artist had, it looks nice, but then again, is it just that? To be able to compete, it needs to have nuances, messages, and ideas, you want to convey, that alone is more important than looking good, I think, what and how will you do it, and hyper-realism as a style could very well be your tool to do it, I'm not saying it is bad, rather its usual lack of meaning is, if I'm wrong about this feel free to correct me, but based on what I saw, that's usually the case
It’s probably silk and not satin because satin is a plastic/polyester mix.
To this day, "how dare she acknowledge that she looks good" is a thing. Pretty shaming is a thing. You're supposed to play dumb if you look good.
Works both ways to be fair
@CoopaiNuse to be absolutely and totally and completely fair: no. Just no.
Society only shames women for taking pride in the way they look, and only women. If you are someone who does this to other women, please ask yourself very honestly: "why am I doing this?" I can guarantee you that it has everything to do with you and nothing to do with the other woman.
If one woman's pride in her looks bothers you, you need to learn pride in your own. Please look up "internalized misogyny". There's enough self confidence for everyone to have some, without taking it away from another woman. It's to me just sad if you think another woman being a queen is a problem.
I want every woman to have maxed out pride and vanity from the way they look, as they should.
@@Poodle_Gun I was more referring to, in films, a character is shown as pretentious by looking at themself in a mirror. That one isn't really gender exclusive, and neither is shaming based on appearance. I just feel like it's just kinda a bit messed up to say it's a one way problem.
@@Poodle_GunI don’t mean to insult you, but you sound like the kind of person to defend Queen Sectonia from Kirby Triple Deluxe.
Now, on more serious terms. I agree for the most part, but what if a woman incessantly rubs in how good she looks? Pride is certainly a good trait to have, but I’m certain there’s a threshold where you have way too much in yourself it just becomes annoying and unlikable and can legally be considered hubris.
@Poodle_Gun Pride and Vanity is too far into the spectrum of self-confidence, especially if you want it maxed out. Self-confidence, self-appreciation, and humility are all the traits to truly show how much you believe your worth. Because it is a good idea to prevent overconfidence and boasting, which is plainly repugnant, I believe.
Gotta love that "I will murder my husband first thing into our honeymoon" gaze she has going there. If she is reluctant, it's probably just her reluctantly biding her time to get rid of her husband as soon as possible.
'Aspiring widow' is the energy we're bringing into 2024
That sounds super messed up out of context
what
@@firelordeliteast6750it mess up in context
This is a great analysis and all, but... I can't take my eyes off that dress. I paint models, and I know a little bit about highlighting and making the colours blend together, and my conclusion is that this guy is nothing short of a wizard. I had to remind myself that wasn't a photography, but a painting.
Dude deserves all of the fame, not only for the scenes he portrays like Skyen mentions, but also for the incredible level of skill on display.
If you had shown me the bottom half of any of these paintings, I would have thought they were photos. The only reason I can tell the faces are painted is because I'm much more familiar with real life faces, so they're easier to distinguish from the medium.
You can really tell this man has spent an incredible amount of time staring at dresses. Look at those tiny creases and wrinkles!
As something of a wizard myself, oh yeah. Definitely some Arcane Who-do going on there. I can't put my finger on *what, specifically* , because that is not my specialization.
One of my favorite things of Toulmouche is that he made multiple 'woman admiring herself' paintings but they don't feel remotely mean-spirited. 'Vanity' is a bit cheekier than 'The Admiring Glance' but in a way that feels like the subject is in on the joke.
His paintings of women are really appealing to women themselves, and it feels like he wanted that.
It's almost as though he saw women as.... people. What a radical concept!
@@mittenista bit more too it than that. Art isn’t tied to morality, but it always shines better in a light of appreciation
I wanna mention that the sister kissing her forehead (a sort of motherly, older-sister-like act) visibly has a wedding ring on, so depending on your take, you could say she was trying to comfort her BECAUSE she’s already married and the bride is having none of it
"When I met my husband I thought he was a disgusting, pompous, fool, and he is, but I learned to love him, and you will too. Maybe Lord Edwardson is old, ugly, smells like peasant's pig, and is our fourth cousin, but he's also rich, and that's all anyone really needs in a man. I know you really love that boy you met in the market, but just because you're getting married doesn't mean you can't still see him."
"This woman is not a fiancée in waiting, she is an aspiring widow"
That line hit me too
"Making love in our honeymoon? Oh, darling, no, not if I can help it. If anything I'll be making spite".
I like to think the littlest sister is naively unaware of her sister's feelings, and that the eldest and third daughters are in quiet understanding of lt all. They try to console her, in a "it can't be helped" way.
But they are holding her hands, restraining her. She is strapped in the scene, her only freedom a brutal display of resentment.
If only my art appreciation class could be this interesting.
It might just be my eyes. But some of those don’t like paintings. Some of them look like pictures from a camera. Or really darn close. The guys was definitely a very talented artist.

I desperately need the phrase "aspiring widow" on a coffee mug
Definitely a line that stuck with me 😅
I feel like clown kissing is more relevant nowadays with people contracting (as the kids would say), “Clussy Fever”
Why would you say something so controversial yet so brave?
If the recent "I'm a Klown [😩censor...]itch" was anything to go off of...
Society embracing the very thing it fears
@@savvivixen8490another theydie or gentlethem with culture. Helluva boss iz a helluva show
That fancy young lady is hungry for Click, and honestly, whomst are we to judge?
This to me speaks to how different people can interpret the same piece of art different because I don’t get that she hates her husband to be here. I get that she’s fed up with all of this wedding bullshit.
Like the process has worn her down to her absolute end and if one more person makes a wedding joke she’s calling the whole thing off
Either way, the point that she isn't excited for the wedding comes across.
@@roxirock5455loud and clear
Well, yes. Kinda. She is reluctant. She doesn't want to marry. We may don't know exactly why, but she doesn't.
@@nekkrofear the title makes it much easier to see.
But before he told us the title I saw it and instantly thought “Oh she is FINISHED with wedding bullshit”
I'm literally currently wearing a t-shirt with this exact painting. But with the added text "Darling, I need a 6-months vacation twice a year". Big fan of that vibe.
LMAOO
What, you telling me you don't kiss clowns on the daily?
I do
It's one of life's greatest pleasure, definitely recommend.
I do it two times a week and let me tell you, it gives life meaning.
I was gonna say, the details in the fabrics in every piece are *utterly insane*. Old mate made some kinda demonic pact to illustrate creases and crumples.
"Aspiring Widow" was such a powerful line
I love the attention to detail he has on clothing. Not just lighting but the insane care put into the texture and way easy fabric behaves. The subtle wrinkles in the Reluctant Fiancée's dress showing off how light the fabric is and how heavily starched it is. And in the same picture, the woman in front of her is in a much heavier fabric and he captures that difference perfectly.
“Aspiring widow” top 10 careers that need to be revived in the new year
The Relectent Fiancee feels very... anxious. Like that looks like how i feel when my anxiety reaches a boiling point and i am ready to throw hands, with anyone. Im not sure if she is unsure about her upcoming vows, or just all the pomp and circumstances around the event. But that is a look of pure seething.
"Making out with a clown" That's just an ordinary day in France.
Ooh this is a nice format, I'd love it if you made more shorts on such art pieces. I enjoy the league, one piece and pokemon content, but I feel like I could doomscroll shorts like this one for hours and actually feel afterwards like I've broadened my horizons and learnt new stuff, which is still an effect for the other content, but in a different way
I mean let's not diminish the usual content. I for one am more interested in character design and visual story telling (f.e. animation), and so I find Skyen's content to be very interesting and educating.
@@vanished2667 same! I always feel a little bit more educated after watching skyen's content, pokemon rants and fine art analyses alike
@@vanished2667 Oh yeah definitely, with "less of an effect" I also really meant just slightly less, skyens insights into character design are great and I've definitely gotten new perspectives from those. And it's always entertaining.
I now need to see the alternate timeline where they did paint a piece called the aspiring widow.
Two things.
One it's wild that your using you eye for design to do analysis of classic art (not saying the analysis of video games and anime isn't good i just find this really cool)
And two one thing that i think makes the Painting so striking is that the subject is basically doing the Kubrick stare (might be a bit off from a true Kubrick stare but dead center and staring right at the camera it's iconic and makes this painting something that sticks in the mind)
One additional detail I noticed about the painting is that one sister appears to have an engagement ring on her right hand - which would imply that the bride is the eldest daughter, as she is the first to marry. Typically, eldest daughters were expected to marry for wealth or status - not for their own sake, but their family's. As such, any personal qualities of the groom would have been not only second, but last priority for the parents and/or matchmakers. That gives us some additional insights into why this unfortunate-marriage-to-be came about!
I'd love to see you do videos on more paintings specifically John William Waterhouse
i’ve always interpreted her sisters comforting her as part of why she’s so clearly upset. they’re holding her hands, basically shackling her to the chair, and either congratulating her or comforting her. she doesn’t want those things, she wants them to be just as fucking mad as she is.
my 3 little sisters: omg congratulations, ur so lucky, i can't wait to get married
me, staring directly into the camera like im on the office:
"Time to store the coffee next to the Rat Poison" eyes
The one that's "kissing a clown" doesn't look like a parisian bourgeoise and a clown to me, I think it's rather Colombine and Arlequin (two characters from the Commedia dell'arte)
It's such a beautiful painting.
“Aspiring widow” is the best thing I’ve ever heard
1:00 if I had to title the painting, I would title it "Satisfaction." I know that look very well. Same, sister. Same. Sometimes you actually DO like what's in the mirror and you want to appreciate that for once. ❤
"Shes an aspiring Widow" THATS SO REAL
"Aspiring Widow" is such a fantastic phrase.
Okay but “The Aspiring Widow” would have been a PERFECT title
Bro pulled a lesson in meme culture
Man, your analysis is so good. Tying the oainting's popularity with Toulmouche's general care for this subject gives it such a deeper meaning than just looking at it like a funny pic or even just talking about the painting's history in a general sense
rip Toulmouche you would've loved the real housewives of atlanta
the depth and quality of his painting of fabric, it's almost like he's driving us to be more interested in the clothes than the subjects. But his work on the expressions, DAMN
Aspiring widow is my new favourite phrase
I just image the moment you are asked for your vows and she being like: yeah yeah lets get this over with
Aspiring widow is simply genius xD
I love these art history analysis-shorts! Great content Skyen! Love to see more of these!

Every time you talk about older art pieces I love every goddamn second of it, ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh TB must stand for The Best
the look on her face is pure "the office"
Aromantic goals here, huh? xD
Nah she's staring at the painter because she's annoyed that he's there and she has to sit down for his painting.
the dresses in his paintings look like a photo its amazing
“Aspiring widow” might be the best thing I’ve heard all day!
It says a lot that, the first time I saw this painting, I immediately thought it couldnt be anything other than modern.
Art skyen is best skyen
Please make more shorts like this explaining arts
yeah
Those were two reviews for the price of one
Aspiring widow is a great fucking title lmao
Aspiring Widow! Omg 😂😂
I thought the subject was at first weird for this channel, considering the shorts, then I watched and thoroughly enjoyed.
Maybe she's reacting to her reluctant fiance or it's an ironic title to show how we smooth down woman's distain. While it's clear in in her face; "she's just reluctant"...
Yes, this video and that painting is awesome, but I cannot unsee reluctant bride having eyes looking different directions..
I just recommand people to go see art in person. Pictures cannot show you the true craftmanship, art and feeling of a painting.
Skyen says “I also talk about One Piece and Arcane in it” as if both those stories don’t know EXACTLY what they’re doing when they pull out the heavy feels
Nice info bits into art and history!!
if i ever were to put fancy paints in my house it will probaby paints of francisco soria

What, so you don't kiss clowns on the regular basis? You should try it sometimes, their lip balm tastes funny!
Plenty of people certainly wish making out with a clown was more mundane If the amount of thirsty Pomni and Geiru Toneido art out there is anything to go by.
Greetings praise algorithm gods
that is a kubrick stare if i ever saw one!
Why is there a hand ontop of the chair (over the left side of her head)?
Wait, you don't kiss a clown on a regular basis??
Disclaimer: I am vehemently not claiming that men can’t strongly empathize with women. However, I am somewhat caught by the prospect that Toulmouche could maybe sympathize with women more strongly because the painter did not feel at home as a man, like in a trans way. (I do this to everything I think about.)
I was expecting LoL, not culture
First time on tbskyen?
Make some shorts about Apex legends skins and character design pleaseeeeee 😂😳
Toulmouche was trans and loved cute girls, im calling it
Less mundane? Speak for yourself
