7 million layers and she STILL has pockets. A+

Zoe 7 And still more comfortable for the plus size people.
Thomas Griffin back then food was kinda scarce for those who didn't have money and for the people who did, meals were only at certain times, if there were Any plus size people there would've been a hand full or less of them
The contemporary category of 'plus size' is hugely limited and beholden to the arbitrary norms of the fashion industry. Also, you should really tap into some of the gluttony debates of the 18th century and realise that the rich certainly had the funds to indulge in luxuriant eating (particularity when empire made imported luxuries available)
Zoe 7 The rich also had the funds to have clothing tailored to their exact size and shape. What exactly is your point??
People in the 21st century:*wearing light clothes because it's burning hot*
People in the 18th century: *"weak"*

No fathing about with heavy, deep bags that you can't find anything in! HANDS FREE so you can carry shopping easier. Even strappy bags that you wear on your shoulder are a pain. and FYI: Annie Andrews, they did have little pouches as bigs in those days.

1. Undershift (made from linen)
2. Over-the-knee stockings (made from wool, cotton, silk or mixed) (often decorated at the ankle with design-clocks.)
+ribbon tied just above the knee ( down with stosking when dancing or ect.)
3. The Dickey petticoat ( knee-length;linen;white)
4. Stays (layers of linen and boned with strips of baleen)
5. Pocket bags
6. Paneas or a hip pad
7. Full-length linen petticoat ( at least 1; you can use more and warm for cold weather)
8. Kerchief (linen or silk; worn over the bosom; worn tucked into the gown or over the cholders)
9. Stomacher ( center decorative piece; stiffend or just lined)
10. The gown petticoat (silk or linen; gas side openings for 5.)
11. The gown (pinned into place down the side front of the stomacher with straight pins)
+Ribbons beneath the gowns skirts are tied together to raise the skirts into a polonaise puff
12. Day cap
13. Decoraitive muslin apron (delicate silk or embroiderd muslin)

Ani faded glory. The pockets fit both my hands and they come in all sizes.
I think the style of corset from this era is one of the most beautiful and flattering corsets ever! It looks so lovely on everybody type I’ve seen it on, I really hope to have one some day. I also love how, if you look at it closely, the maids are wearing the same style of clothing as the rich lady, just in simpler, hardier fabrics and simpler in terms of having no ruffles etc. but I just love that everyone had access to the same styles just using what they could afford to make their own versions

The straight pins really had me. I guess that was an added reason to walking upright and sitting down very gingerly.
Cynthia Prater I agree.. lolzz
I bet they were no danger to the woman, with all those layers on, but to anyone who got close... 😉
Cynthia Prater she had so many layers on, she wouldn't feel them!
The alternative to the pins was stitching the dress to the undergarments and at the end of the day a lady was cut out of her clothing by her ladies maid.
What did she do if she wanted to go to the toilet???
I want try a dress like this. What a gorgeous dress...
"Ugh. Women in the 1700's were so repressed and their clothing was so complicated!"
But...they had pockets.
Fanny packs are the solution!
Or just designing women's clothes around more practical elements, but of course that's too much effort for fast fashion.
@@fruitygarlic3601 Well, I would think it would be difficult to sell purses when functional pockets are an option. Personally I was thinking some sort of saddlebag set up. Like pockets, but hanging outside the clothing.
@@112steinway That's kind of similar to what I was saying with the fanny pack trend. It's died down a little bit, but I can still see it persisting later on because of the practicality.
A lot of fast fashion retailers do prioritise money over...y'know, fashion. Whether they're avoiding putting pockets in women's clothes because they want to sell purses or cut down on materials it's annoying. At least some skinny jeans have reasonably-sized pockets in the back.
@@fruitygarlic3601 the issue is that they look ridiculous. Practical? Certainly, but like I can't imagine wearing one
@@minimooster7258 What? Do you mean fanny packs? They were a trend item a little while ago, so there are a lot of affordable ones that are designed to look halfway decent; some of them are pretty cute.

If you want, wear it.
You can wear it if you want. Only the top 5% had access to these beautiful clothes.
now days we literally just look like hobos all the time and just wearing hoodies and sweatpants.
Got that right🤨
If time travelers brought these people comfy sweatpants and hoodies, that's what they would be dying to quickly get home to wear. 😄 Imagine if they had modern comfy flip flops? Ha ha!
Oh, come on, these intricate dresses can find ways to put in practical pockets, but modern pants and skirt companies can't?
Yet they can fit in Narnia in guys gym shorts pockets
And people ask why women need big purses
today clothes manufacturers are looking to make clothes for the least amount of money. Adding pockets costs money for material and labor. more money for the manufacturer if they sell it without pockets.
So true
Modern fashion companies want to sell shitty, overpriced purses that’ll fall apart in less than a year

Sooo, if someone from that era would see us now, she'd think we're all walking around in our underwear :)
Daisy van Brakel - Molenaar lol
Well, considering women wear pants... I think layers would be the least of the things to be offended about.
No, I don't think she would. I think she'd realise that fashions have changed. The only thing that might shock her is the universal free-flowing hair of today. For a woman of her time, going out and about with loose hair was the same as going out in your underwear today...
aren't some of us? i see girls wearing denim panties and leather bras in public so...
Well looking at some men and especially women: They are indeed running around in their underwear! Or at least it doesn't cover much more than that
I have made a gown just like this but with a sweet white cotton fabric with pink and blue flowers on it and I bought enough to make the skirt along with two different dress styles, one that fastens up the center front with hooks and the other being more like the one in the video but instead of pins to secure it, the stomacher fastened over with hooks and bars on both sides of the robe, hidden by ruffles.
I remember reading something about this and apparently it's indecent for them to show anything above their ankle so I just imagined the guys like
"Hey bro.. Guess what? "
"What"
"I saw a chicks ankle today-"
"BRO--"
Hahahahaahahahahahaahahah
Ankles weren’t indecent since many working class women would have skirts just at it above the ankles to avoid them getting dirty during manual work and would also raise their skirts to use them to hold items

Jack Sin trolls alert
I thoughtabout it the whole video like "I just put on some jeans, a T-shirt and that's it"
Having just watched the male version of this, I wonder how accurate the attitudes of those being dressed might have been. I wonder if more often men were sort of distant and even haughty, whereas perhaps more women--especially younger women--might have been much more friendly with their maidservants. Since women were so much more tied to their houses, and the houses of close family and friends who they would have visited regularly, I wonder if more often they might have more genuine friendships with the female staff in particular. Anyone here more knowledgeable on the topic than I am?
I was wondering just this. Without any knowledge on the matter but with some knowledge on general human being stuff, this is the type of thing that might've varied widely depending on the individual. Although the whole "treat everyone as your equal" is a fairly recent thing, I assume that the need for connection would prevail on some instances.
They got dressed like this every day. Their minds were probably on 50 million other things while all this layering was going on.
For upper class people with servants, like in this video, the lady of the house would have her lady's maid and the man of the house would have his valet. These servants at set apart from the other servants of the house because they have a close and personal (seeing them naked/dressing them) relationship with the master/mistress. If you watch Downton Abby, you'll see an example of this. The lady's maid and valet are treated well and differently precisely because they know the personal/private business of the master/mistress and come into such close personal contact with them.
Generally people were raised being taught to make sure the members of the staff didn’t forget their place, so they wouldn’t start taking liberties beyond what was appropriate. Same with many households today. Some people did and do have close relationships with some of the staff, although there still usually exists a boundary, albeit an extended one compared to the rest of staff, that mustn’t be crossed to maintain respect and order.
This kind of dressing would be done by a personal lady's maid (for men, a personal valet). This servant would be set apart from the rest precisely because of their close relationship with the mistress. Often times, a lady's maid would be a good friend of her mistress, having served her from the time she was a teenager or young woman. It varied from person to person, but a lady's maid could be her mistress's closest confidant.
I love how “dresses” and “gowns” for a huge chunk of history were really just separate pieces that matched and looked to be one cohesive garment!
Goddamn, even with those dresses they still had better pockets than we have in women's pants today.

yes, and winters in europe used to be much COLDER back in the day!
Although it was colder, and it was a lot of layers compared to today's standards, the clothing was made of more natural fibers. This meant that it would be more breathable, if comparing it to today's clothing, as much of modern day fashion uses polyester which has plastic.

One time in school, I showed a guy sitting next to me how small my pockets were. He then gathered a bunch of other guys to see and all of them were in shock.
her pockets arent small at all tho
they are heckin big cuz they gotta fit the money pouches an the fans
WindyDork in the modern world you gumbie, not this lady. And likely actually needles and keys and scissors more then fans or pouches of money.
Tiana Stegall Fake pockets. Are they just trying to torment us ladies now?
I would probably die after the third layer
Kibuki ! I know right =D 😂😂
Lol, me too. So grateful thatI can just slip on my jeans and t shirt and ready to go.
Kibuki ! Same
Kibuki ! I agree
If you mean from heat, they were actually very cool as the fabrics were light and natural.
Unless I'm thinking of 1800-WWI...
This was extremely useful for research. Thank you for the video.
Honesty I've always loved vintage dresses and stuff! There so lovely and beautiful defiantly my type of style.
Someone in the 18th century: I like your dress!
Me in the 18th century: thanks it has openings for pockets

I cant imagine still being cold with all those layers--
Also
THEY GET POCKETS--
SUCH BIG ONES LMAO AND WE CAN DETACH THEM WHEN WE WANT TO WOW
This blue is very beautiful
Well since they're in Europe it must've still been fucking cold
I'm confused as to how they reach their pocket tho all those layers to lift would be so annoying
@@kaylee4401 There are slits in the gown so they can reach the pockets. There's basically a hole in the gown so they can reach it
easier, if you basically didn't watch the vid.
Wow I love classic cloths especially this 🤩😻
Idk why these videos make me feel so calm
Just when you think she's done, there's another layer
hey waddup wood
It's now clear why a lady's maid was an absolute necessity
Kristen Wood I swear I feel uncomfortable because all of the layers
Kristen Wood wow this is weird. Nice last name you have there
its like a video game, when you defeat what you think is last boss and then there is extra stage beyond
Me now: wakes up at 7:15 for school
18th Century girls: wakes up at 4 am just to get dressed
i wake up at 2 am so that’s nothing
School starts at 7:15 am for me xd
I feel sorry for you guys, my school starts at 9:30 😂
I know theres no school to woman in those days i think theres no school at all!
Schools were around even in the ancient Roman times, but for hundreds of years it was unlikely girls would attend schools.
So so pretty
I'm kinda thankful to see a video that refers to stays in the correct term and not just calling it a corset
I guess that 200 years from now there will be a video about how we used to get dressed in this era.
Idk... i suppose internet will still be a thing in the future so they can see it on "historical" videos on yt
"The average girl awoke at noon, usually exclaiming 'FUCK! I DID IT AGAIN!' after a glance at the clock. She stands, quickly removing her sweat pants, tank top, and underwear. She replaces the underwear with a clean pair, and, though it was customary, neglects to put on a bra. She rummages on the floor for anything that may pass as clean, eventually finding a shirt she dislikes, which she wears over a pair of jeans, which are ripped in multiple places, then hurries to the kitchen for coffee."
Literally a 30 second video 😂😂
TheStepmonkey it’s probably going to be like a minute and 2 hour vid with some girl putting on makeup and putting on clothes 🤷🏽♀️😂
Exactly what I was thinking
Me: What is the dress code?
Friend: casual
Me:
lol me
😂😂😂😂
Sophia Koeppen I assume they'd typically only dress once a day early in the morning then undress in the late afternoon bathe and put on a fairly simple night gown
Anton Fuchs if you were upper class, you changed two-four times a day. If lower class, you'd change once a day. For cleanliness.
roman lettuce oh that sounds horrible and time consuming lol
“Conspicuous consumption” 💯…. The wealthy loooove to make sure everyone knows they’re wealthy. I enjoy these vids so much. Very informative , beautifully detailed & acted and such soothing narration ♥️
As a person who sweats a lot, i wouldn't want to imagine my smell with those 😭😭😭
Even the women's clothes 200 years ago had pockets! Why don't we?
What?
holyshiet women's clothing today has *very little* in the way of pockets, because clothing designers think that all women carry purses/handbags. Yet the clothes of yesteryear HAVE pockets provided in the design. It's frustrating that, of all the clothing options that have been lost to time, substantial pockets have almost disappeared from women's clothing- ESPECIALLY for skinnier/smaller sizes.
SuperWhoLocked Browncoat: That's one reason I wear pants, because most of them have pockets. Women shouldn't carry their whole world in their purses because what if someone snatches it. I always carry my keys in my pocket and some money so if my purse gets stolen they can't go rob my house while I'm stranded with no way to drive home and no money.
sexism
(no seriously, people were afraid that if you gave women pockets they'd carry weapons--which they did! When they were fighting for equality) (also, it made women dependent on carrying bags, which could/can easily be taken from them)
that's why I want to learn to stitch my own clothes
*If they saw what we wear now*
*Them:* Why are y'all naked?
Kermit fam 😂😂😂😂😂😂
😅😅
Bad Vibes ikr
Haha😂😂😅
True, they wear modest clothes even in the hot summer!
Geeez, so much stuff! It looks lovely on a slim young lass like this (seems we get to see only slim young models in fashion recreations), but I wonder how did the older and not so slim women look in those dresses?
Beautiful blue color!
