One thing that I love in kindred's splash art looking like the viewer caught them in the middle of their hunt and catching their attention in the process is that, in the lore, people usually see kindred when they're about to die. Which means there's another hunt that will begin, and it won't end well for us. Probably why wolf is smiling gleefully.
Exactly! I see that splash and I feel like, they are waiting and I couldn't understand why, until I read their story. In my mind, this is them silently asking what you choose, if you stay, you can go peacefully with Lamb, but if you run, you are gonna get caught by Wolf
not always they appear to people who are close too (there is the story of a little girl that run away from home and bump into kindred but there are not there for her... but her parents but i still love kindred as a entity
And Kindred appear at different forms in what which you see. It just depends on your idea/culture/tradition

kindred's base splash art is quite literally an animated background on my pc, and has stayed that way since I got it. they hold such a special place in my heart, and it's such a beautiful piece. the tweening used to animate all of leagues animated splash arts just adds to the exact feeling you described. such a gorgeous artwork
and their theme is just *chef's kiss! they're the main reason i started playing piano with the dun-dun-dun-dudududududun
Coven Morgana and Evelynn's splashes are the top 2 for me. The mysteriousness and power in their eyes always send chill down my spine.

The water effect Alex managed to capture on Project Jhin is absolutely *phenomenal.* That man has a *gift* when it comes to art. Alex Flores has drawn so many splashes and each one is fantastic. I've never seen any other artist at Riot capture the effects of light so well.

My favorite Splash is Captain Fortune, I love the tension look on her face, the colors, the the character design and for me it feels like this should be her base skin. This is the real Sarah Fortune, this is how she's in her lore. And I just love it

I really love your analysis of Coven Evelynn, it's one of my absolute favorites too, but you went into details I never would've noticed before. I don't think I even registered the shadow demons around her until you mentioned them. It's an extremely well-done piece of storytelling, and there's so much stuffed into the little details.
I actually thought the shadow demons were some black smoke around her. When he pointed that out, I feel even more seduced.
Iron Inquisitor Kayle's Splashart with Nocturne and Singed is so beautiful, capturinh a really good gothic horror thst looks like it belongs in an abandoned cathedral or in Bloodborne. Hell, a lot of Kayle and Morgana's splasharts are really beautiful

I haven't bought many skins in this game, but I BOUGHT Iron Inquisitor Kayle when it was in My Shop because it was just so beautiful. I have Viridian Kayle too, but I almost never use it because Iron Inquisitor also looks great in game.
I absolutely love traditional Sejus art, not because of the "undress" but because it shows her softer side, when compared to the ilustration of the "Death Knot" story, where she is riding Bristle, full War-Mother armor, while she tied a death knot to her hair, ready to go to battle, the contrast is just amazing

I'm really happy to see Blacksmith poppy on this list, it's always been my favourite splash art and I cant really, think of any that come close.
I think Bewitching Janna is one of the most beautiful splasharts in the game, not because of Janna herself, but rather the color and lighting depicted in the artwork. I look at that artwork the same way you see traditional trundle

For a splash, i think one of my favorite splashes has to be high noon senna. It is the only skin I’ve ever bought, and it was purely off the splash

One thing I also love about the Sasquatch nunu &willump splash, is the tiny braid that is on nunu's right shoulder. It's almost on the center of the piece, like a tiny trinket that shows how sweet and caring they are to each other
for me, sentinel irelia will always be one of my favourite splash arts ever. i love her serious expression, the glowing blades behind her, the black mist winding around her, her hair billowing in the breeze, and the juxtaposition with ruined karma. ruination was a flop but god do i love sentinel irelia sm. i hope she thrives

I know it was in the "honorable mentions" section, but I absolutely LOVE Spirit Blossom Kindred. The gentle and soft look of Lamb. At first look, it appears like we've caught them in a moment of them playing together, or going for a walk. Lamb in particular doesn't have any physical notes that make you feel as though she wants to hurt you, but thanks to her mask, she doesn't convey ANY emotion. Wolf, on the other hand, looks very protecting of her, and has a monstrous, devilishly confident smile. One that conveys the feeling that he'll happily chase you, should Lamb wish it so. Additionally, the white fur and purple tinges we get on his new colour scheme allows him to match Lamb while still being unique and separate from her and retaining his original colour scheme. Or maybe I'm completely wrong and don't know what I am talking about. (Please make another one of these! so well made!)
add this in, unlike the default skin where it utilizes light and shadow to convey life and death, Spirit Blossom blends the colour palette to their surroundings: pink flowers, white rabbits and foxes, purple hue of lights/spiritual energy, and greenish/blueish leaves are the colours can be found on both Lamb and Wolf. Essentially, Spirit Blossom here is conveying that life and death is part of the nature, albeit the nature here is symbolized with mythical spiritual forest.
Edit: Riven, Cass, Lilia, Vayne and Thresh are just purple hues with purple energy background. At least Yone, Yasuo, Teemo and Ahri has beautiful coloured clothing to fit the flowery theme somehow just like Kindred.

I really love the Fiddle me Timbers and Myrmidon Pantheon skins for the way they just seem to tower over you. They do it differently though; Fiddle me timbers looks rickety and almost like its searching for something in the murky depths while Myrmidon Pantheon is sheer overwhelming might without even hitting an action pose and the rolling lava and oh my god I love them.
i personaly really love the Eclipse Leona splash bc iof the way light comes from behind her. first, it does the whole triangle composition thing not with light, but her sillouette, giving ger this overwhelming aura alongside with her pose. This also allows her face not to be completly lit up, emphasizing her already intense expression, reinforcing the whole tone. All of this, alongside the way the light falls on her hair, armor and body (alongside the head ornament and the background) really frames her as the very wielder of this light, as if the otherwise harsh judgement of the sun (or moon) rests gently on her own shoulder, making her the true choosen of the sun (or moon)
The splash art for Storm Dragon Aurelion Sol is absolutely beautiful. I think Asol only has high quality skins but storm dragon takes the cake in every way, especially its splash art.

Traditional sejuani's splashart is the reason I'm Sapphic. Coven Eve is otherworldly.

I've always considered Thousand Pierced Volibear to be my absolute favorite because there is something so innately primal, horrific, raw, and eldritch about the splash art that typifies Volibear's cruelty and brutality.

Personally, I love the Prestige Ocean Song Seraphine skin. Being able to draw her underwater like that just blows my mind.

I've always been heavily drawn by Kindred's splash art, reason for me trying hard to learn her in game. The way you explain makes me feel so satisfied as you articulate much of why I feel so mesmerized by that piece of art. That and the fact that you point out a lot of details that I really did not notice not only for Kindred, but for all of the following splashes.
your reasoning on Traditional Sejuani is also why I love her level up animation in LoR: it shows her not just as a fearsome warrior but also as someone who deeply cares about Bristles, her friend. in her stories she's often depicted as being as warlike as she is not by greed or cruelty, but to protect her tribe and secure them the best future she can. and I really like how it's depicted in both those instances.
A personal favorite of mine is actually Pykes base art. The rendering of the underwater light, colour palette, aswell as the sheer amount of "atmosphere" in it is just fantastic. Also the tea cup being suspended in the water is such a great touch.
My favorite from the ones in the vid is prob the Gwen splash art. I really love the way they used light and color in that one, it definitely stood out when she was revealed as one of my favorite splash arts. Some others that I really like are Vex, Program Nami, and Prestige Ocean Song Seraphine.
Vex for similar reasons to Gwen, with the light and colors. Especially with Shadow's eyes and Vex's ears and hair.
I also really love the use of light shining through water in Program Nami and Prestige Sera.
I'm honestly kinda surprised none of the new prestige skins were mentioned, like Talon or Sera lol.
But I would like to see another video of this same topic, the explanations of composition and storytelling are so interesting, and it'd be great to hear about these on more splash arts!

It's been few years but nothing has come close to Sun Goddess Karma for me. The overall feeling of the splash, the gorgeousness and expression of Karma, the details on her face, the colors and the sun theme enhanced by the wonderful lighting , the graciousness of her gestures. There is nothing extra but this peaceful scene capture everything that needs to be displayed.

I agree as well. Sun Goddess Karma was one of the skins i first saw when i started playing the game and it stole my heart since then. Theres indeed been some truly beautiful splash arts but, for me as well, nothing can top this one.

I second this! The art is one of my favorite parts of LoR.
I love the trundle art because it instant draws your eyes to the brightness on his stomach and knee, that forces you to keep your head down, like you're kneeling before his throne scared to look up and bother him, or to gaze up slowly towards his face, creating scale for the seated character, and a power dynamic with the viewer. Im not an artist so I could be yapping but I found that cool
I am always fascinated by Captain Gangplank's splash art. The lighting, flaming sword and overall contrast of colors are literal eye candy. Definitely one of my favorites.

I've always been an appreciator of art in video games (because duh if a game doesn't look good to at least a few people who's going to play it?), but the way you break down design for both the splash art's and skins for LoL on a purely technical scale really makes me want to learn more about how art and design can tell a story. Honestly you do such a fantastic job at getting me to see things in art I'd never considered before and I'd love to see you continue to do so, so PLEASE make another one of these.
This actually helped me with homework tonight. I was up practicing cuts for class tomorrow (culinary school) and this analysis just hearing you talk about stuff you clearly feel passionate about was great for helping me focus on my own passions. I hope you do another video like this it was awesome hearing you talk about league art more than just in hot takes
I was going to comment Arcana Tahm as my favorite splash, but uh, yeah. Another of my favorites is Star Nemesis Fiddle. Initially I felt intrigued, amused even, as a product of the vibrant and over the top design. His sheer size is hard to spot as he's surrounded by objects of non-specific sizes, but when I noticed Akali in the bottom right... he suddenly became horrifying. I love that splash.
Please definitely do another of these. The analysis of each piece of art went for just the right amount of time and taking time to appreciate all of the amazing art is fantastic even when I don't ply the game at all anymore.

My favorite splash art is probably Dark Cosmic Jhin - the oil spill swirl of the galaxy he's rising out of that illuminates him from below is absolutely mesmerising, and the ethereal arms are really striking. Love your videos!

I would really love to see another video like this! Personally, I think Elderwood Gnar has one of the best splashs in the game. I love the two beams of light that highlight the cute little interaction between gnar and the spirit. Also, the colours are just gorgeous! The slight accents on his hair that resemble the arteries of leaves are beautiful. Also him holding his boomerang with his tail (away from the spirits) is just such a clever indicator of his shy but friendly nature and manages to incorporate one of gnar's signature features (that is associated with fighting) into this peaceful shot. He also looks cute af.
The Arcana skin line is the prettiest one, the red and gold are such a classic and the tarot cards theme is always an evergreen for me.
I kept Arcana Hecarim just because of how beautiful the splash art and skin itself is. And I don't even play Hecarim

All of these pieces have elements to them that feel natural and intuitive to our minds to interpret, but the way you describe them really brings out the beauty in them even more. Having awareness and eye for detail with so many different artforms is agreat skil. Having the same keen sense for beauty on your level, though, that is a true talent. One that has even helped me refine my own eye and taste for details and smaller things without me even realizing it. I will never not be impressed by your wide range of knowledge when it comes to the arts, and your ability to completely articulate your feelings, and the feelings that art evokes from the audience who lack the words to describe it. Please, PLEASE do more!

If you do a part two video (hopefully) I’d say arcana Camille should make it into the list. It’s the only skin that surpasses Arcana Kench for me. Everything about that skin has a special effect on me like you with Kench.
I actually skipped to the last to see who's his top pick, and thought he's just using Arcana Tahm Kench's splashart to introduce his pick from the Arcana skinline but welp 😆
One Splash Art that always captivates me is Shan Hai Scrolls Neeko actually. The way Neeko is slightly offset to the right, yet every aspect of the artwork sets focus ponto her face is so dang striking to me. Something I appreciate about it is the clear distiction between character and background through a stylistic change. All the Shan Hai Scrolls splashes do it, but for some reasn it works the best on Neeko in my opinion. It sells this idea of old stories told in scrolls and only delivered through illustrations and text came to life so well. The warm color scheme coming from this firey ball, that looks to encapsulate the olden times where Neeko believes tto find good again contrasting with the left corner (left because sinister god this is just so well thought out help me) in which it seems to show the dark claws of Cho'Gath consuming the hope Neeko portrays.
These thick calligraphy-esque lines in the background contrasting with the intriquite rendering of the foreground and Neeko's face just do it for me. Like even these small details of the gold lines in the background mimicing old techniques of middle aged paintings and renaissance renderings of halos is just such a perfect little nod to how gods and holy entities were portrayed in former times. Hozure's works always amaze me, but none quite gets me like Shan Hai Scrolls Neeko because gosh dang diggidy darn it is it well executed for what fantasy its trying to sell.
Can I just say, that feeling of nostalgia you talked about with Sasquatch Nunu and Willump? It's something I felt immensely there. The only other place I've really felt it is reading a TTRPG book called Wanderhome, and every time, I feel like I'm going to cry a bit. It's really beautiful stuff.
The most truly spectacular art has a profound reaction in its audience, something that draws raw emotion you didn't even know you had up from the very depths of the soul. To stick with a user, in feeling and in image, for years to come. By this metric, we can conclude that the best splash art is the original Lollipoppy.
(nah though, as a poppy main since her original launch until I quit a few years ago, blacksmith is gorgeous.)

Another thing about Pumpkin Head Fiddlesticks is that there is definately a source of light to the piece. It's just that.. Fiddlestick is blotting it out. Fiddlestick is the great shadow looming over you, even in a perfectly bright day, his presence a smog on the world so even what his physical body doesn't block, his presence does.

I do think blood moon Aatrox (and probably the prestige version even more) at least deserves to be an honorable mention, every time I see that piece of art I'm actually transfixed by it, it's feels like a completely different style than almost any other splash in the game (especially if you look at the other rather generic blood moon skins)
cant help but imagine the artist going "Ye, this looks cool, lets go with it" and then some guy on youtube is talking about how 4 Pixels at 186, 456 in the image reflects the characters personality. Love the Video.

SANDSTORM EKKO is an absolutely mesmerizing art piece that makes Ekko, a steampunk scifi-fantasy sort of tough kid character, look ethereal and soft but no less powerful. The granules and dust in the air emphasizes the movement of the wind which might sound obvious in a sandstorm but it's so well made! My personal favourite splash in the game
though I do use Nightbringer Aphelios as my desktop bg so I guess I'm a fake bitch
I feel like the Fright Night skins are truly beautiful. The details in in them are so subtil and it makes everything so pretty. The textures and style are so defined

Arclight Yorick is probably my favorite splash art I just adore the mood, the melancholy of it, the light it's just gorgeous.
(and nothing to do with his splash art but the song during his R is beautiful)
I love Elderwood Hecarim for making him look like a cryptide that you accidentally stumbled upon in a dense forest - neither sympathetic nor malevolent.
Personally I love all of Camille's splash arts, they're all very interesting to me, especially the Program one even if Camille looks odd I think it has the more unique look
even the latest camile skin? that ones splash art really hurts the skin in my opinion.

Base Camille is in my top 5, especially since it was painted by one of my favorite Riot OG artists, his name is Evan Monteiro, he is currently a concept artist on Arcane

Please make this a series!! This is teaching me a lot about composition tools and you’re so good at describing it that I can multitask while listening and glancing briefly.
I went looking through a few skins after this, and Freljord Sylas really caught my eye. I'm not sure if its the snow or the ominous glow his chains cast on his face or the chains themselves, but something about it is gorgeous. Also, the fright night skins deserve some attention for obvious reason.
My favorite art in League has to be Elderwood Hecarim!
It's an incredibly pretty piece and it has sort of a pinch of horror in it imo.
Imagine going to a walk in a forest and out of nowhere you find a giant centaur-tree thing, it's as terrifying as it is mesmerizing: did you just found a monster or a forest spirit/god?

I would love a sequel or two to this. There really is a lot of beautiful art in the game. I know a lot of creators worry about making content go stale so I wouldn't expect anything over two more videos on the subject.

Before watching the whole list I wanted to gush about Gwen’s dress so so much, and I’m happy to see her splash-art is on the list already, bc I love it for the same reason! I really appreciate and enjoy admiring how clothes are rendered in art, so this splash is one of my top favs for sure
I also want to shout-out Pantheon’s base splash. I love how almost monochrome the whole piece is, and how Pantheon almost blends with his surroundings as if he really is the embodiment of war. And it feels like Aatrox in the background is watching the god die and the human rise at that moment
16:30 this description made me realize that it's very much like the entire image has a very slight haze of smoke, causing everything to be just a touch muted, but scattering the light so as to make everything a bit lighter as well, and most notably, making light sources just a little bit extra warm-toned, enhancing the oranges and reds in a very specific way, that i only began to recognize as I listened.
It's been just a teeny bit smoky where I am recently, and it gives everything a very unique appearance. intentionally or not, this splash art really replicates it so well.

Project Vayne remains one of my all-time favorite Splash arts in League. The dynamic pose, the water effects, the lighting and reflections, the angle, EVERYTHING just looks so damn nice. The shared splash for Bard Bard, Sejuani Dawnchaser, and Jayce Brighthammer is also REALLY up there, too.
Of all the splashes in the game, I never would've expected your favorite to be one of Tahm Kench's! It makes me happy, considering he doesn't seem to be a very popular champion.
I think Coven Morgana's splash art will always be one of my favourites

I love love love the references to historical paintings, please know you can talk history as long as you want to and I personally am HERE for it. For my favorite skins I think I have to go with Surprise Party Fiddlesticks (waiting on the same treatment for Shaco...), Coven Morgana, base Casseopia, Knockout Lee Sin, and Elderwood Veigar. All of these just have the most fun to me and are wickedly cool.
I love Spirit Blossom Kindred splash art. That alone made me buy the skin, plus the model itself is amazing so double win for me

I must say, one of my favourite splash art is the normal Jhin splash. I myself love Jhin as a character and think he is one of the best written, visual and just interesting characters. What I love about this splash is, that you see Jhin in a broken mirror, probably shot by himself. For a character, that is all about the perfect composition and planned art a reflection, not only in literal sense is one of the interesting first introductions to a character. It is interesting introduction too a character, showing them in a broken reflection, tho we don’t know much about Jhins past, it is not him who is broken, he is the one who breaks. Just as he broke the mirror. The light shows a triangle of his mask and his gun. The most recognisable of design. I could speak about this art for ages. Props to the artist because to have that slight off reflection of Jhin in the mirror really sells it, without missing the emphasis to the character/ be distracting.

I'd love to see another video like this, it is fascinating hearing you dissect the skins and the details put into them. I've always loved art but never been able to vocalize or really be aware of the technical skill in different components, and you voice it so lovingly!
Please, please, please give us more art analysis of League splash arts! This was such an interesting listen! While you'tr at it, would you consider a similar look at the Legends of Runeterra art?
It was absolutely delightful to see so many splashes here that have always had special place in my heart, like Blacksmith Poppy and Coven Evelynn. But if I have to choose, my all time favorite is Divine Sword Irelia. It is just so breathtaking and gorgeous and you can find speedpaint from the original artist from CZcams, so you can truly admire how much work is put into that peace.
Thank you for this video! I loved your takes, and in a lot of cases, put words to why I love some splashes. Please make more videos like these, I will eat them up.

For me my favorite was always Elementalist Lux.
This splash art is absolutly gorgeous, it looks almost like an impressionist painting.
The 3 different expressions she have, and yet there is so little change of her smile. The way she opens her eyes after the water part, and just stare into you. Just pure talent.
I'm surprised you didn't talk about it, since you like lights works so much, and the water one is just so good for that. the way the artist simulates rays piercing through water, oh god, so so brilliant, but as you said, beauty is subjective.
