It's not easy to unerstand this song without the traditions knowledge and connotations..
Shum is not only the noise (literally), it's also mythological god or "joined" spirit of the forest, and in some ukrainian dialects - just a forest. Also, this song is of "Vesnyanka" traditional type (moreover, Hayivka subtype) - it calls for spring and new life, and the another layers are the calls for the resurrection after the Chornobyl's tragedy, and COVID as well.
Hemp plants were quite important in Ukraiene lands as we do not have cotton, also hemp fabrics in many cases is much more useful and healthy, non-hygroscopic than others. So it was a very importat part of agriculture up to 1980s, and also it's green of course, and one of the earliest cultures to sow.
Kate here plays Shum in her green cardigan - she is the spirit which should be awaken and awake the nature itself, and this cardigan shoud be teared by the ritual and the song (first girls make this, than tear off or burn it)
After the centuries and christian influense all was simplified and only songs, round dances and some sign things left of these rituals, and also like many other pagan rituals, there dances were melted with spring christian holidays ))

thank you friends )) Of course it's the case when most of people feel all the message right without any verbal background, and this is amazing! Go_A are great, and audience is great too! BUT.. As soon as someone is trying to translate the words - most of the magic disappears because of the strange sense and strange hemp plants, so I've tried to explain that the words themselves are not so important, I think the message is being delivered almost perfectly by the voice, music, visuals and some overall tribal spirit of the song )
And yes, the symbolysm of this song is very powerful.. the most obvious - as always and almost everywhere, people appreciate the sun by circles in items, dances, repeating the words etc )))

Well with this song it is unfortunate that it is totally misunderstood from the world as in what it is… it is just taken out of Slavic context… I came from Slovakia… I am 21 years old… we as Slavic people have those distinguished sounding folklore songs our grandmas would love but our generations would totally 100% ignore because youth just things its all trash… tend to listen to more west-like music… all those folkore old songs do have those high “screamy” voice… girls especially are praised at schools at young age if they can do that… it was meant to be “strong enough to sing thorough whole valleys… whatever… but why I am saying this is, that this artist managed to turn part of slavic culture even young slavic people would look down upon and turned it into something modern… it is just so so rare and such an unusual combination to hear that slavic people are now obsessed with the fact that the music they thought was dead is now new. It's obviously not great for anyone from those countries, particularly if the former name has uncomfortable associations, but I do understand it. It also doesn't help that in the UK we are often inconsistent about updating our naming conventions to match those of the countries we are talking about.
In my experience as someone from the UK, it's not really a problem with younger people because internet, but I've heard a LOT of older British people refer to "Belorussia", "Rumania", "Rhodesia", "Burma", etc. There's rarely any malice behind it, but it does reflect that unfortunate British tendency to be a bit dismissive of other countries and cultures. And she's actually hitting notes you can't reproduce on a piano because the traditional scales in those countries developed so differently from our standard major and minor keys, but somehow they work very well in harmonies that are grounded in e minor. There's a rule in Eurovision that says that the material must be original. Shum's original song wasn't made for Eurovision, they used an actual Ukrainian Folk song as lyrics, like a 2021 version of the song. But since this song was selected for Eurovision after, they had to rewrite the lyrics so it would be a 100% original piece. Also the time thing, must be 3 minutes and the original was over 4. But revamps are a very common thing in Eurovision, from drastic to very little ones. Maneskin for example had swear words in their lyrics, had to remove them. Albania's song also was revamp after Anxhela won the Albanian national final, Festivali i Kenges. So it's a very common practice.

IIRC this song was never intended to be Go_A's submission, it was just a song release. But the reception was so good the Ukrainian broadcaster just told the band, "that's what you're sending!" So they had to frantically revamp, because it was 4 minutes and a folk song (I believe while not against EBU laws the Ukrainian contest rules for their entries is that it can't be the same lyrics as any existing song). So, complete overhaul was needed!

Hello from Ukraine! Thank you a lot for this video, love your channel sooo much!!!

  • @hermenegildakociubinska6665

I think the coolest thing about the tempo in this song is that is follows very traditional folk dance music patterns, but it's hard to clock it as an "ethnic" thing because it combines so well with electronic music conventions. EDM usually sticks to the same BPM and all the build-ups and tension are created using dynamics, halving note values, adding tracks etc. But when Go_A take the acceleration that commonly happens towards the end of a lively folk dance and incorporate it in a rave build-up, it just feels like rave build-ups have always had tempo changes. This is because both speeding up in folk and the all the effects used in EDM build-ups serve the same purpose: making the music even more intense and inducing a trance-like state in the dancers.
I've heard many attempts at blending musical styles, but it often feels like a weird mixture of things that don't really fit together. But this song is arranged in a very smart way, where the folk and electronic music enhance one another, so nothing sounds out of place.

They are a nice follow-up to Ruslana and her ""Wild Dance" song in terms of style and use of folklore elements. Their previous song from 2020 - Соловей ( Nightingale) is really cool as well. Hi! I really like your videos, altho I don't often comment! I just wanted to add something about the backing track:
    1) In regards of covid: Eurovision songs can, from time to time, have big ensembles of musicians. They indeed had to limit the amount of people on stage. To remain fair, if one is required to have a backing track instead of live music, it has to be the same for all
    2) In general, it has been a few years now that the music isn't live for a big reason: sound engineering. It would be an absolute logistical nightmare for sound engineers to reach good sound quality for both the stage and TV considering the wildly different bands that come in. It's already a gigantic task to cap the sound of a single band live, let alone several in various styles. With each style change (that takes time, slowing the whole thing down and demanding more padding on part of the presenters), it also introduces a risk of mistakes. It would be a considerable advantage for the first entry, and a massive risk for the later ones. While I adore live music and would prefer to have everything live, I can understand why it isn't done.

It is awesome. This last version took time to grow on me unlike the original but out of all the songs this was my choice from EV.

It also needed to be shortened to 3 minutes.

03:56 It's not because of covid that the instrumental part is not played live. has been like this for years. I heard a couple of versions of why this is (not sure which one is the real one or if both together play a factor in the "no live instruments part" but I'm sure has nothing to do with covid)
Version 1: back in the days Eurovision had a full orchestra playing live. There was a year they had a strike of all musicians in the orchestra and since then they never had live instruments again.
Version 2: takes too much time for soundcheck and this way they are sure that the performance has only 3 min.
If anyone knows the real reason, or if in fact, both versions are the reason why please let me/us know.

People sang those songs to spring, so it can hear and come faster. That is why the singer is in green coat and the others are dressed in white. It means that after winter there's always comes spring.
