Really enjoying this “Engine Week” series!!! 😁👍🏼
Thomas thank you for your work - many of us are interested in Yamaha performance - I am 68 and used to miss the school bus periodically in North Ontario when i was 16 then have to drive my polished and ported 338cc yamaha snowmobile 24 miles to school. I loved it. Last 25 yrs located in BC where I was a bush pilot for a while out of Williams Lake.
Thank you Steve. We will get to the Yamaha engines again soon 😊
Loving the engine week series. Would love to see you get some face to face with Roder group SMA diesels if at all possible.
Great video once again! All the right questions.
Impressive shop. Excellent video Bryan!
Great job, excellent !
Yes
I corresponded with the people from Thomas.
I assertained there is an Edge Aircraft performance shop right here in Edmonton Alberta Canada.
Excellent!!!
Wonderful rotax upgrade.
Takk for det
Would love to see more regarding the dyno! I could see the uneven distribution of fuel even with my carburetor Lycoming. They say digital engine monitoring gives a person too much information, taking away from flying the plane, but I disagree. Like anything, if you use it wisely, it can tell you a lot of info when troubleshooting!
Yamaha made a motor for the Ford Taurus SHO back when I was a kid in the 1990s.
I just started watching plane details and can’t wait to learn about these things.
Machinist so these things are always fun for me.
Best life and thanks for this.
I enjoyed this very much and it helped me with my day more than you will ever know man.
Good to know this was interesting and maybe even inspiring to you. Thanks for taking the time to watch and engage here! :-)
@@ExperimentalAircraftChannel I have never wanted to leave the ground but I do enjoy the moving parts.
Thanks for all your hard work on these.
I love the new shop, very well thought out. Very rigorous engineering in everything these guys do.
Nope a lot of issues with Edge engines in the UK........especially in 120hp Eurofox towplanes - got rid of ours...... replaced with a normal Rotax...........
@@soaruk3697 This is sad because the idea of embracing pratices from the racing community into aircraft has a lot of potential.
@@soaruk3697 those issues has finally been sorted and taken care of. Once we got our dyno the flaws on the tow engines were quickly address and solved.
@@EdgePerformanceNorway Yet nobody in the UK is buying your engines now for that application as far as I'm aware........ damage done lesson learnt. Most are now ordering the 141 hp 915's and the importer of Eurofoxes no longer list your engine as an option.....
@@soaruk3697we have 2 EUROFOX 120 engines ready to ship to the UK, and one shipped out few weeks ago. We’ve also delivered two EP914Ti (126hp) turbo engine all to UK tow planes. So they are still towing gliders in the UK, and many other EU counties 😉
There are very few aircraft engine options for more than 400 HP (a Lycoming engine and the RED engine are the only two I can think of now) but this kind of HP output is usual in trucks, APUs, boats and others. Only from a technical point of view (since certification and a market for this doesn't seem possible) it would be great if those engine preparation shops also embraced aircraft conversions for engines that didn't come from cars, motorcycles, ATVs or snowmobiles.
Tbh I'd love to see somebody take a water-cooled engine and design an EAB around it to take advantage of the Meridith effect.
Does the edge performance engine put out 165 HP continuous?
I'm not trying to insult Edge in any way, just had a thought. Is there a company making aircraft engines out of the Subaru EJ series, _a la_ viking with honda? There's a HUGE automotive aftermarket for EJ engines and the engines are very robust and reliable, doubly so with just a few aftermarket parts. Being a flat four, the engine configuration is a natural fit for average small aircraft engine bay. It would synergize very well with a performance auto engine company; both groups value reliable, lightweight, high performance parts. That and being able to very honestly say "aircraft grade" can't hurt in the auto performance market.
After watching the recent EJ engine rebuild on the Hagerty channel, I am much less impressed with Subaru engines than I was prior. They seem to have a less than stellar reliability record and have several weak areas that need aftermarket parts to address. Not sure I’d want one in my airplane.
I found a lot of those in CZcams being used for experimental airplanes but I don't know if any company supports this.
Al a viking is correct. The guy that runs viking did that with Subaru and was less than successful
@@randystern7870 And there are many complaints about it in the forums but they claim it's because this is a hard conversion to get right. The internet has too many "sunday naggers" so it's important to understand what is the real context behind everything.
Great interview Thomas. Congratulations on the beautiful facility. Can't wait to get the engine you built me back in the air soon. 🛠✈️
200 HP in a modern FADEC engine is the goods.
With out doubt the Edge Yamhama built aircraft engine is proven.
Especially Lsa.
Depending on the build, dependability w and powers too burn
really surprised Rotax doesn't rectify that intake ...like yesterday. They know what they are sending out. WHY>>>>?????? Things that make you go hmmmm
Good enough culture, and recertification is costly.
@@EdgePerformanceNorway And recertification is costly because of the good enough culture of the government.
@@EdgePerformanceNorway Yeah, but you'd think they would have fixed that before even applying for certification. Oh well, more opportunity for you!
Looking forward to seeing your EP917Ti development. Hopefully you'll post some YT videos?
what's Edge's youtube channel? I couldn't find it.

@@EdgePerformanceNorway thanks!
How will the systems on the Edge 917 compare to the stock Rotax 915? Things like intake and intercooler plumbing, exhaust, radiator size and location and such. I am building a RANS S-21 and plan to use the 915 since RANS will soon have a FWF kit available for it. I am trying to assess how much I might have to modify to use your 917 in lieu of the stock 915. I would rather not have to make a new cowling so I am wondering how much more cooling air might be needed for radiator and intercooler, for example.
@@LTVoyagerno changes. Same coolers, same exhaust, same mount and the engine comes in a smaller package. It’s bolt on, even 1:1 wiring 😊
@@EdgePerformanceNorway I did not find it at your web site. Is there information on the 917 available online? Will it be ready for sale by summer 2023?
Great video but audio is all over the place. Goes loud then soft then loud again.
Audio is good on my end 🤷🏼♂️
How many hp
Yes.
EP912STI = 154HP
EPeX 150HP (Nat Asp) 200 - 300HP Turbocharged
I believe Thomas estimates the EP917TI could produce 170 - 200HP
FADEC on the Yamaha?
