CTS Turbo Intake Install Volkswagen Golf GTI MK7

- Today we installed the CTS Turbo Intake on the Mk7 GTI for more boost noises and overall shenanigans. The CTS Turbo offers decent parts for less than most other brands. I have had good luck using the CTS Turbo Inlet, Downpipe, and Intake. The CTS Turbo intake is an open element intake which means that it will probably effect intake temperatures in the summer, but in the winter here in the frozen tundra of Minnesota we don't have to worry about that! Overall the Mk7 CTS Turbo intake fits decently, there was a bit of a hiccup for the intake runner vacuum reference connection. I'm wondering if the previous owner (yes I did buy this used #savedat$$$$) ordered between revisions, because there really shouldn't be reason for there to be a vacuum reference on both the SAI adapter and the intake tube. In my mind it would make more sense to put a vac reference on the intake tube itself because that would cover cars with and without the SAI. I digress...

really good video man thank you!
Thanks for watching 🙏
Yooo I'm from MN too! Slowly modding my GLI✌
Maybe we'll see each other at a car show sometime!
is the bolt you are referring to 10mm @5:07 ? it seems mine has fallen off and i need to get a new one. Nice install, saw your review on CTS website!
Sweet, glad they shared it. According to my Internet sleuthing it's M6-1.0 X 10mm
Did you figure out if you were missing something that had the tray rocking back and fourth? Or is it suppose to do that
That bolt is really the only thing from what I can tell. It isn't really going anywhere and I never heard it rattling while driving. I don't think it's a problem
So to pull off my cts turbo cold air intake to replace my battery I just need a 7mm, 10mm and 13 mm socket set?
You should be able to pull the battery with just a 13mm, leave the intake in place
my engine light came on but after coming back to this video i realized i didnt put that little hose you showed at 2:30 on the intake tube. im assuming thats why it came on
It seems unlikely as it is only exposed to atmospheric pressure, did you also do your turbo inlet pipe and mess around with your PCV at all?
On cold starts, is your SAI pretty loud for about 15 seconds?
Yes it is! Car grabbing extra hair to heat up the catalytic converter for emissions I believe
@@HardwayLearning Thanks for the quick reply! Just put this CTS intake on my 21 GLI, thought I broke something 😂. I appreciate it!
Do you get a check engine light after installing this
No you don't 👍
Why did you choose open filter instead of closed airbox? Thanksss
More turbo noises and also cheaper. Realistically turbocharged cars are intercooled so the performance loss should be minimal, but certainly not ideal
Hey I’m super late so I doubt you’ll see this haha, but I’m finally deciding to put this intake in my mk7 gli, im new to it all so please don’t judge lol but when I go to order, it asks with sai? Yes or no, did you select yes because you have a sai in your vw, I know this may be a dumb question lol, or why would someone say no? If they don’t have it or if they don’t need the sai?
If you're in the US I would select "yes" for SAI so it includes the SAI filter 👍
@@HardwayLearning I am! Thank you so much!
@@dropshotqueen6129 no problem and good luck!
@@HardwayLearning another quick question I’m sorry! When you ordered it, did you choose with inlets? Or no?
@@dropshotqueen6129 turbo inlet pipe? If so there is only one and I would recommend upgrading that
hey man probably no chance you'll see this but I have that same hose at 2:29 (referring to the flapper vacuum hose?) that I disconnected from the stock air box and I had left it hanging ever since, as the hose wasn't long enough to put into my intake. the car has always performed fine and I have noticed no issues, but is this really a big problem or issue? where can I order that part? I was always asked by people what that hose was and I had no idea and just said it was from the stock air box, hoping no issues will occur in the future but had it like this for many many months
Are you talking about the crinkly hose? Or the small vacuum reference line. The crinkly hose is for secondary air injection. This opens on cold starts for emissions. I'm not sure where it flows through, but I'm imagining it was originally filtered for a reason. Many companies offer a filter kit for their aftermarket intakes. Search "SAI filter". Or check this one out: www.ecstuning.com/b-integrated-engineering-parts/sai-filter-kit/ieincu1~int/?gclid=Cj0KCQjw0K-HBhDDARIsAFJ6UGjDJxtdvNWrN5B0EEanXZiaxah8Z9CdLccP1VsPcaHiyKRxTUeCKD0aAmUWEALw_wcB
I bought my golf with this intake on it and Im seeing that the previous owner put duct tape around the SAI piece and I know that obviously isn't the proper way to install it and I'm wondering how you did it? I havent taken the tape off yet, because I have absolutely no idea what to expect when I do take it off.
They taped the SAI hose to the filter instead of using a hose clamp? I'm not really sure what the question is. CTS Turbo sells the SAI filter individually and should include clamp if you are missing that little filter?
@@HardwayLearning yes. I'm planning on parking over at a parts store in a little while so once I peel the tape off, if there isn't a hose clamp on it, I can go buy one. I can post the link to my post from reddit so you can see the picture, if that's easier?
@@elizabethmichelle6390 sounds like a decent plan of attack, be sure to have some sockets and or screw drivers for the hose clamp with you!
What tune you got?
United Motorsport ECU/TCU tune 🤘. It's buttery smooth and really quick
How does this compare to a unitronic turbo intake
It's pretty much all the same, depending on if you want an open intake for more noise or closed for a marginal performance gain.
My snorkel won’t go back on did i do something incorrect
I'm not entirely sure what which piece you're talking about
Any update on the RS3?
Currently being built at St. Charles Garage in Illinois. 🤘
@@HardwayLearning what was the cause of failure? Another Custom Code catastrophe?
@@hmmboost well, we got the injectors flowed tested and they all passed. So either the tune, or bad gas
Any power loss on low rpm? Or do you feel the difference all the way through acceleration
Hard to really tell, I look at an intake as more of an audible upgrade than performance upgrade. More choo choo noises the better in my opinion!
Hardway Learning yeah I was looking at some forum responses about possible power loss low end. I ended up getting the ECS tuning intake with the carbon cover for 30bucks more than the Cts. You got to love their scratch and dent sales
I hope you can answer my question. So after installing everything did the check engine light turned on ?
An intake should not cause a check engine light to turn on, are you experiencing an issue?
You’re missing the gromits that’s why the case is wobbly, not that it matters since you changed it already
It has the grommets, but the lowest snap location did break at some point so that part wasn't secure
@@HardwayLearning I think they changed the design, I bought one last week and there’s an extra grommet at the bottom of the case, 3 grommets in total
Weird, what does it secure to on the car? There's only 2 posts aren't there?
@@HardwayLearning there’s 3 posts. If u look at this video at time stamp 5:30 it shows that there’s 3 posts, I’m installing this tomorrow should take me like 30 mins czcams.com/video/27znS9i-c6A/video.html
My gti intake made a ton more intake noise with this intake
I don't think it transfers through the camera very well
@@HardwayLearning didn’t seem like it did, it sounded pretty good on my iPhone tho 😅
Did u need a tune
Not for an intake 👍
We didnt hear the sound of intake what happen ??
It's hard to capture with the camera/it was cold out didn't want to roll my windows down 🤣
@@HardwayLearning Do you recommend it or injen best ??
By the way i miss that weather 😍 i live in qatar and the temperature is up to 50° 😭
@@ALI-FILALI all the tube and filter intakes should work basically the same. The biggest increase in noise was removing the front trim piece. Check out my Integrated engineering intake video for clarity, hard to explain in text 🤣
P.S. the cooler weather certainly does make for better horsepower
@@HardwayLearning Here in Qatar we change the oil every 5,000 km due to the high temperature 😭
@@ALI-FILALI gotta take care of that engine though!
How to turn a cold air intake into hot air intake!!
Yay for intercoolers!
is a remap needed?
Nope!
What's wrong with K&N?
They only work if you add their stickers to your car and I don't really like stickers.
