  • I'm starting a new batch of Kaffir Lime Trees because they're a joy to watch them grow. Also a few other plants I've started growing in preparation for Spring and Summer.

    Seed starting is one of my favorite things to do on weekends, as the weather gets warmer. What are you planning to grow or currently growing this year?

    I just obtained Kaffir limes (and the seeds within!) from my aunt & uncle and I'm wanting to germinate to grow a tree of my own. Thank you for this great video with your techniques around the garden.

    I'm so grateful for your videos!! They're amazing. I saw this one and immediately clicked, knowing that I need the calmness and happiness that you bring every time. Thank you so much!! đŸ„° I'm not planting anything. No room inside or out, and have a black thumb instead of a green one. As with everything in your videos, I'll enjoy it through you!!
    Sending love as always from Baton Rouge!! 💙💙

    Looks like you're off to a great start with your seedlings! I just started to clean up my garden beds, will probably put some radish and cilantro seeds down soon. Thank you for sharing your video!

    That's great, you can pick citrus when you need it in a few years from now. You surely are a green thumb, I'm growing lemon now, but only one sprouted! 😅

      Thank you! I use a heating mat to geminate citrus seeds and I find it helps. Still lots to learn though. Take care.

    Just stopped by to say that I watched your original germination video and ordered seeds on Etsy back in Feb. 2021. Managed to get about 15 or so to germinate. They are now between 50 and 100cm tall and nearly ready to start using. We live in Alberta, Canada so I wasn't too optimistic but have been pleasantly surprised. They are indoors with full south sun. Half of them I transplanted into felt/fabric planter bags and half into terra cotta pots. The trees in the planter bags are much bigger, so I think that's one of the secrets for these plants.

      Thank you so much for your comment. I'm glad that you were able to germinate and grow some lime trees. It sounds like they're growing happily under your care. I recently moved and have west facing windows now. I supplement with artificial light too. Fabric planter bags sound like a great idea since they dry out quickly, considering the plants don't like being too wet. Thank you for sharing.

    I acquired a potted lime tree with our new home. It's short, so maybe a dwarf. Not sure what type of limes. Probably key lime. It was totally neglected. Most of the branches are dead. I've trimmed all the dead wood off. Now there's only one branch with leaves. Is there any hope for it?

    • @ThunThunChannel
      @ThunThunChannel  Pƙed rokem

      Absolutely, one branch with leaves means there is still hope. A good combo of lighting, scheduled watering, and fertilizing occasionally, it will surely thrive. Best of luck!

    Just a note from someone with a small orchard--the apples, pears, cherries, and plums that you eat are not grown from seeds but from grafts which are basically clones of a single tree that turned out to have uncommonly good fruit. Therefore, if you grow them from seeds you find in the fruit, you will not end up with a tree that gives you the same fruit. They don't "come true from seed" in other words. Some of the heritage fruit varieties come from a single tree found hundreds of years ago in Europe or the US and are still around because of this "cloning" technique where a twig is grafted onto a different rootstock. This is not the case for plants that are full species like the kaffir lime. I just want to let people know because a fruit tree from one of the other species can take sometimes 8 years from seed to bear fruit and you will end up with an apple only a deer will eat. I did not know that before I started growing fruit trees, but luckily didn't go down that road 😊 Fruit trees have a fascinating history. Nut trees are a little different, but some nut trees can take 40-60 years to begin bearing harvestable quantities of nuts. You really have to plant nut trees for the next generation and not yourself, so plant a nut tree for the future.

      Thank you so much for this information! I love learning about grafting, I actually tried it myself before but it failed and the scion didn't take to the rootstock. I'm thinking about trying that again. That's a nice selection of fruits you have. There's nothing like harvesting your own fruits, year after year. My 2 persimmon trees are grafted. I can't wait to have fruit on them in a few years.
      The good thing about Kaffir Lime Trees are that Southeast Asian cuisine mostly harvest just the leaves for cooking. From my experience, the leaves are always fragrant just like the ones from the parent tree. Sometimes the fruits will be a bit bigger or smaller but always just as fragrant. Since I'm growing these from seed, I don't expect to have fruit for a very long time. This was great info, thank you for sharing!
