In pipeline transportation, pigging is the practice of using pipeline inspection gauges or gadgets, devices generally referred to as pigs or scrapers, to perform various maintenance operations.
Pipeline Internal Cleaning/ Gauging: Pigging is used to clean large as well as smaller diameter pipelines in the oil industry. Pipeline Pigging can be used for almost any section of the transfer process.
Pipeline intelligent pigging- Caliper survey: Intelligent or "Smart pigs" used to inspect pipelines to assess their condition and to prevent leaks, which can be hazardous or harmful to the environment. They usually do not interrupt production, though some product can be lost when the pig is removed.
Blending- Pigs are used in lube oil or paint blending to clean the pipes to avoid cross-contamination, and to empty the pipes into the product tanks (or sometimes to send a component back to its tank).
Filling the line with water during hydrotest or filling the line with service liquid or gas by Pig.
They can also be used to separate different products in a multi product pipeline and to clear slugs of liquid from multiphase gas//liquid pipelines.
Pigging can be used for diversified systems like- lubricating oils, paints, chemicals, toiletries, cosmetics and foodstuffs.

Pls how do I know the type of pig to use and how is the pig coupled and received to avoid too much of product loss assuming operation is on and lastly at what point do I receive the pig and how pls?

Selection of PIG depending on the service, type of pipeline (Metallic/ non metallic, coated or uncoated etc. ) purpose of the pigging - many factors.
Generally, during construction of pipeline, we use the pig for- 1) cleaning the pipeline (Hard foam Pig with or without Metallic brush, Disk - bi or unidirectional pig with CS brish installed.
2) For filling Water 3) for dewatering, swabbing the pipeline after hydrotest, 4) For mothballing the existing pipeline (cleaning the service waste, 5) For introducing Nitrogen, dry air for lay up to protect the hydrotested pipeline till commissioning, 6) while introducing the service gas or liquid to remove the air/ nitrogen from the pipeline completely or as much as possible..
Actually, when ever you will be exposed to the real work - you will have more detailed knowledge gradually.

Pigging a line in construction phase is for internal Cleaning before or after hydrotesting. This will be little different for cleaning the Existing pipeline. What is your requirement?
