Could you do a video about scabbard fighting? I know it's obviously meant to hold swords but I have read that it was not uncommon to dual wield both the sword and sheath. I also wonder if this is one area where the reverse grip (with the scabbard, that is) is incorporated (or do most of such users flip it forward?).
I’m certainly no expert but going off his previous tests with reverse grip, I imagine you’d want to hold it properly and effectively treat it like a light stick or club. No edge + no hand guard would make reverse grip an invitation to chop that hand off most likely
@@TSfish94 It's just that I recall in an old Scholagladitoria video, he demonstrates drawing techniques with a held scabbard where it, held in a reverse grip, could be done to jab into someone before stabbing with the sword. I won't dispute that reverse grip is not optimal for fighting. It's not my style anyway.
Perhaps one aspect of reverse grip I wonder about are drawing techniques from the sheath. Aside from the standard forward draw, I wonder about holding the weapon backwards (especially with the hand that's closest to the hilt). I also wonder with the tip of the blade supported by being inside the scabbard if a person could reasonably defend with a partial draw.
Excellent work! To one of your early comments (my effort to back you guys up 😅) it is possible to do the "hyper-realistic" fights (one move and done) and still be entertaining BUT those will come off more like a quick-draw duel than an actual Sword Fight (check out the end of the film "Sanjuro" to see what I'm talking about).
Anyways, great job on this - really excited to see more in the future.

And one small question. I know this is SellSWORD Arts, but I still wanted to ask out of curiosity. You guys do any work with polearms? I've always loved those kinds of weapons.
That was just awesome. I couldn't stop grinning the whole time.
Even though there was no stake in this duel, because there is no story before or after, I still found myself eager to know who would win.

This is a better fight scene than numerous other fights in cinema these past few years.
i really love the hesitation in between the exchange also the body jerking a bit when trying to feint the opponent. which makes it more believable.

I love sabre, and father of one of my friends I found out has 30 + years expirience with Polish Sabre and damn I am going to learn it, even tho switching from bujutsu I am also learning will be bit hard for brain
Hi! I've been a big fan of your work for a while and I always come to this channel for research on HEMA/fencing. The choreography is great for this video and I'd love to use it as reference for storyboarding practice (I'm a studying storyboard artist). I have this fight scene I'm trying to draw but when it comes to actual moves I always get nervous and draw a blank. I feel like I could get over that if I did a better, more indepth look at the exchanges going on here.
If you haven't seen the sabre fight from the movie Zrodzeni do Szabli - the final duel, probably the best depiction of Polish sabre in a movie format that they've done to date. Uses some techniques that are never really seen in movies and not really seen outside of the Polish sabre style itself.
Shame more movies don't depict the false edge techniques that sabres use. Nice work on the fight. Really enjoyable to watch.
Yup, movies should really start paying attention to realistic fights; of course, I don't expect much, but if only they took out the spins/turning your back to the enemy...
That being said, there are films where fights are taken seriously. One of the best examples (at least for saber fights) is the duel in the Polish film "Deluge", where the actors playing in that scene have taken fencing lessons, they were fighting with steel blades (dull of course, but nevertheless), and they weren't really holding back when fighting. You could probably nitpick at that scene, but overall, it's one of those rare cases where a sword fight has been done right.
Are historically realistic sword fights usually concluded quickly or is it dependant on what weapon’s being used?

I have always been curious about the role of the off-hand in saber-dueling. Is there any benefits to having nothing in the left hand? I genuinely don't know if it helps with balance or if it helps with maintaining focus on more important elements of the duel, or if it is simply this way because tradition dictates it to be this way. Any answers would be illuminating

Are you using Northern Italian, Southern Italian or Sicilian styles of Military Saber?
You seem quire nimble with this weapon! And your thoughts are on point. Watch out: your retreats and recoveries in real combat were much more balanced and pleasant to watch, recoveries / reatreats of your character thou, seemed unbalanced and kinda drew my attention from bladework at the first half of the fight. I liked that one more than last longsword one thou!

I will say that while playing a character, I want to add a bit of drama into it. Because this is a life and death struggle, the evasions and footwork carry a heavier sense of urgency.
While fencing I am trying to perfectly execute techniques with no real risk to my person if I fail, the character I am portraying is a little bit more frantic, as if he messes up he dies.
Possibly a dumb question as all of my sword knowledge comes from books, games, movies. But would a weapon or shield in the off hand work with a saber? Given the foot work and dueling approach instead of a melee/brawl that would happen in an armored setting, i genuinely don't know if a dagger or bucklef would be a benefit or hinderance... One of my favorite examples of this is in GOT season 1 when Jamie locks his blade with someone and stabs them in the eye with a knife. Seems very practical and effective without pointless Hollywood pizazz.
Sabers are very old weapons, that were initially used with shields like most medieval and classical one handed swords.
So yes you could, it just takes slightly different foot work
The type of sabre they were using existed long after shields stopped being used in warfare or duelling.
That being said, in a sort of pre planned duel setting a buckler would always be advantageous in a strick combat sense. As would armor. But that is very different from the context of the times that perricular weapon was used.
There are other sabre type swords from different countries in different times that did use sheilds however

I really love this fight as it has something many other staged duels (including yours, to be honest) tend to lack: In this one, you really *believe* that the strikes are done with the intent to actually hurt. They don't look like anyone is holding back for the sake of safety/timing which singlehandedly changes the overall feel of the whole fight. Big kudos!!
Am I seeing it right? Did you use 800g training weapons in your choreography? Isn't that dangerous? In movie and stage fencing they usually use aluminum blades.
There's no standard when it comes to what people use in movies or on stage. In recent years there's been a move towards aluminum or CG blades in films. But I find that that takes away from the realism. We usually use weapons designed for Hema and fencing, because they are the most accurate representations of how the weapon would have actually worked.
They are very safe, and we have safety techniques built into our choreography but keep us from hurting one another.
@@SellswordArts Sure, like replacing every nr. 1 cut to the temple with a nr. 5 cut just below the shoulder. In case your partner misses his parry, you hit his arm instead of his temple. Sure I get that. But even on the arm I would prefer to be hit by aluminum to being hit by steel.
I use sport fencing epee blades on sabre hilts until I can afford aluminum swords. My 800g Cold Steel Hutton sabre is too heavy for stage fencing in my opinion. The Pecoraro sabre at 600g is OK, but it looks even less realistic than epee blades do.
Just make a Lightsaber version out of it and you got more clicks. It looks amazing. With Lightsabers you could probably see better what is going on.

Tame? Or controlled with good technique as opposed to wild flailing and big attacks.
I think that choreographed fights from Hollywood that have no martial logic have created a false expectation on the part of the audience.
Initially something that's more realistic might look tame, but when you actually look at it you can tell that the attacks were actually aimed at a Target, and that the two combatants look like they know what they're doing rather than relying heavily on camera and editing techniques.
It's just my preference, but I would much rather watch fights like this.
