- In this video I take an overview of the SQ-1/R series of synthesizers and modules, as well look at the UI and basic programming.
The intro track uses drums and some pads from the SQ, but the video probably give a better idea of the synths capabilities.

The best walk around video that I could find. You didn't just cover the pre sets. Such a standard thing these days - it seems.

Thanks for this video! I own both an ESQ-1 and an SQ-1 so I was thrilled to see some content covering the SQ series.
While it has its limitations, the SQ line also has some very interesting options and a typical Ensoniq sound that I haven't found in any other synth so far.
I recently got my hands on a big sysex pack containing all the banks Ensoniq used to sell on all their cartridges, plus a bunch more presets. KS32 Editor 32-bit runs fine on Windows 10 over here, though I haven't had the chance to plug it with the SQ1 yet. But I'm looking forward to trying all those banks out!
I think if you spend a bit more time with it you may be surprised what this little beast can do. Programming takes a bit of time for sure, and having the full SQ1 instead of the rack version certainly helps a bit, but it's definitely worth the outcome.

Hi, thanks for the feedback. I'll have a go at getting KSedit to work on one of my windows 10 machines. Maybe I'll have more luck. If I can get an editor to work, then I'll certainly consider doing another video. It's certainly a bit disappointing to give up on it at this stage.
I can also confirm KS Edit works on Windows 10. I've used it to transfer and edit patches on an SQ-1+ and my SQ-R (1st gen) through a Tbox USB dual MIDI interface. There's also a generic memory card you can get for the SQ series (not the SQ-80 - that's basically an ESQ-1). The Fujisoku BS32G1-C will pop up on ebay occasionally. I use one with my SQ-R, and only needed to add a fresh battery and follow the formatting procedures in the manual.

Yes the esq is but the sq, not so much.
One of my favourite synths. This thing can sound easily very massive. After all, it's Ensoniq. Great for Hard rock, Prog rock and Metal.
I never really think of synths in a metal context, so I'll have to take your word for it :-)

Ciertamente tengo un Ensoniq SQ1 Plus desde hace 25 años ...logre con mucha paciencia encontrar la edición de sonidos pero es tedioso hacerlo cuando no se está mucho tiempo en práctica para lograrlo ... es una muy buena máquina , pero erraron en los comandos para editar de manera fácil en práctica. Saludos desde Argentina

Great video and I subscribed, also, will donate. I keep missing on how you adjust the volume for each track. I have a lot of air and I know it’s from the volume of the tracks. More noise than signal. Are you holding down Edit Sound and the Bank Select button to get to the volume? It’s 2:30 a.m. but I am about to go try this. Thanks. Also, best link to the manual? Thanks.

I wish someone would negotiate with crewtive and jget the unused patents or alternatively license, the old Classics for a remake

Great channel, I own a ks32 and used to own a sqr+
It is the only synth I owned which I had to buy again.
There is a fair few sound demos on my page, also there is a great Facebook page with Sysex patches.
A very strange synth to program, second only to the alesis quadrasynth which is like the sq on steroids, but doesn't sound anywhere near as good as the sq

What´s the point of showing the Transwaves, which are wavetables, and not modulating the index to show the full potential.
The editing is not that hard once you get used to it. It was my first "professional" synth back in 1993... I did a lot of great music with it. The sequencer and effects were great too.
Fair points. The difficulty is knowing how best to use your time to get the results you want. Sure, if I spent more time on it, I could get used to it, but is that the best use of my time? With an editor it would be a different story, so maybe I'll get back to it at some stage.
@@RunningonairMusic sure. It was the only thing I had, and was a teen so I had all the time in the world to explore it.
To modulate the transwaves you have to choose a modulation source for the "start" parameter on the Wave section. If you choose mod wheel, by turning the wheel up you'll sweep the waves inside the transwave. That way you can create pwm, sync and resonant filter effects.

You can also select adjacent groups of waveforms from the Multi-Wave by setting the start point and a very low range. The selected range will loop through one or more waveforms and can yield some interesting Wavestation-like patches.
