I was at an antique mall in Phoenix. I had been wanting a tiny cross to wear. I saw one in a case and bought is for $15. I wanted to get it cleaned, so I went to a local jewelry store. I thought it was sterling with crystals. Turns out it was white gold and diamonds and worth $650!

I used to work at Savers, and we had a "bag wall" which was basically the junk from the bottom of boxes. All bags were .99 cents.
So I bought one that had a bunch in foreign currency in it... The ladies in the back thought it was play money. They're was currency from about seven different places. Went to Wells Fargo on my lunch break, they had to pull out books to identify each one, but I ended up cashing in for $873 🤷🏽‍♀️ best day ever!!!

Living the farm Life, I've done that before lol. Give things away, not really thinking about any vintage value at all until they tell me they sold it. Here is my life.......I saw a guy looking into trash can at a small strip mall, I thought he was drinking out of used soda cups.......it appeared as though he was. I gave him $10 to buy himself a meal of his own and as I sat in my car, he walked over to an ATM machine and DEPOSITED my $10 in his account! I saw it with my own eyes and he got his receipt and everything. I'm assuming he was faking the act of drinking the thrown away sodas just for the show. I should have confronted him, but didn't. He probably had more money than I do.

I would't say it was a thrift store find but my mom spent 25 dollars on a harmonic and harmonica lessons set on Amazon. Turns out she accidentally spent 250. So she tried to get the item returned... but it was already sent so she'd have to wait for it to arrive before sending it back. When it finally did arrive it wasn't a harmonica... it was a watch... in a really really nice box. so I looked it up online and found out it was worth 1,600 dollars. So she called Amazon and they said if she had received the item by mistake, she could keep it. They also refunded her the 250 from the harmonica.
I don't know what I find more funny... that my mom spent 250 on harmonica lessons and got a 1,600 dollar watch or that someone was expecting a 1,600 dollar watch and got 250$ worth of harmonica lessons instead.

I can't remember how long ago it was but during one Christmas, a Goodwill worker found $5,000 in cash in the pocket of some pants she was sorting through. She informed her supervisor of what she had found. The supervisor told her to keep the money because the donor should have gone through the pockets before donating the pants. I'm sure the woman was ecstatic considering it was just before Christmas when she found the money.

10 years ago my Mom gave me money to go thrifting for my birthday since it's something I've always enjoyed no matter how much money I make.
I purchased a Louis Vuitton train case for $20 at a 1 off thrift store (not a chain store) that had no idea that little train case was worth several thousand. It was the real deal.
I still tease my Mom about it & ask when she is planning to outdo herself with one of my next gifts.
I still have it & use it for my makeup whenever I travel. It's still in great shape.

I found $300 inside a money belt. I didn’t even think to look inside the belt until I had already bought it and was in the car. I was excited to see a green dollar bill inside the zippered pouch, thinking I had gotten a dollar. The more I looked, the more I found. I ended up giving most of it to a family who had been wiped out by hurricane Harvey. When you find gifts like that, during times of hardship, they are to be given away to those less fortunate.

Found a tangle of plastic mardi-gras beads and in between them was a gold bracelet. I bought it for 25 cents and when I untangled it, there was a 14kt charm bracelet with two playboy charms on on it. In a local thrift store in Eastern Kansas, on July 1, 2012, I bought an old card trick book. I was in my mid 50's, and this was a sentimental reminder of an interest I had as a young boy. I opened the book when I got it home, and saw that one of its first pages had a note of appreciation that was written to a woman named Irene. And I noted that the man who signed the note had a very unusual first name. I began reading the book, and it wasn't long before I encountered that same name again, in the text of the book! Dai Vernon. I did some research, and here is what I discovered: Dai Vernon was a very famous magician who both performed and lived at the Magic Castle in Los Angeles, California. And he had apparently given this card trick book, with it's note of appreciation, to Irene Larson, who was the co-owner of the Magic Castle! What was the book doing here? Irene was still alive, I discovered, though Dai Vernon had died in 1992. What's the book worth? Don't know and don't care, because I'll never sell it. And here's why: Dai Vernon's note to Irene Larson had made me think of myself and my wife. And exactly one year to the day after I bought that book, on July 1, 2013, my beautiful wife passed away. She had been injured in an accident. And she died at 52 years of age. There are 52 cards in a deck of cards.....God talks to me through synchronicites often, and they are sometimes even more amazing than this one. I've been blessed beyond imagination, and have been given the secrets of this Universe. If you're interested, give me a click and see where that can take you....

I went to goodwill to get a couple speakers for my garage and my fiancé found an $8000 dollar wedding dress, in the original cover with the tags still on it. It was double lucky because it was only out as a Halloween costume. Actually triple lucky, it was the dress my fiancé had been dreaming of for months but was way above our budget. It was a few sizes too big but the alterations were only $500, so total cost $545. There was actually another dress by the same designer, but we didn’t get it because we were in a bit of shock at our luck. We went back to get the other dress about 20 minutes later and it was gone. The lady behind us heard the conversation with the cashier and bought it. It’s a shame, we saved thousands of dollars and I was crazy with frustration at my own stupidity in not seeing the potential income the other dress could have been. Oh well, I got the girl.

About 12 years ago, in a secondhand store in Massachusetts, I found a vinyl record of "Color Me Barbra" by Barbra Streisand. I bought it for a friend, who's a big fan, for only $.50. I gave it to her, and when she took the record out, we found it was signed. She took it to a memorabilia expert who authenticated it. It was real. It's worth about $3,000. My friend framed it, saying she was going to keep it, and it would later become her 'Retirement policy'. Best $.50 I ever spent!

My Stepfather told me a story of how a friend of his was part of a play version of The Wizard of Oz, working with the costuming. He was asked to find a period-style jacket for the show and, after finding a suitable jacket, was surprised to find a label that simply read “Baum”. They had it checked and it was indeed a jacket that was once owned by the author himself, L. Frank Baum.
I don’t know if the story is true, but I like to think it is.

I was at the local Goodwill and noticed a sign that said "REWARD! $5,000 for a diamond necklace found inside a pair of hiking shoes"
Apparently, someone had left/hidden a platinum and diamond necklace in a pair of old hiking shoes (to deter a burglar?) and they got donated. They tried to get the police and FBI involved to sequester the tapes to see who purchased the item, but it was a legal transaction and the purchaser had their right to privacy. Last time I checked, no one had come forward with the necklace... must have been worth 10 times the reward...

Hello my best deal occurred in the early 80's in Chicago at a flee market called "
"Maxwell Street flee market" there was a box sitting in a table with all sorts of trinkets in it,most of it covered in goop, grease and wax. After going through the box with a stick I noticed a purple ring encrusted with wax and grease. I thought with a little cleaning it would be a pretty costume ring as I like purple. It turned out to be a 3 carat amethyst stone surrounded by 25 diamonds worth al little over 10,000 because of the color and the the diamonds. I enjoyed it and wore it for a couple is decades then passed it on to my daughter.... 💜 💍

But not speaking for myself or about thrift stores but I went as a chaperone with my little brother on a field trip to a gemstone mining place when he was in the 5th grade. Everyone was panning the stones and dirt in the water when this kid in his class found a HUGE ruby. It turned out to be a real ruby. And it must have been very very valuable because it started a fuss. The employees at the gem stone mining place started gathering and talking amongst themselves. Then the next thing you know they tried to take it from him. But his mother was there and she wouldn’t let them have it. They actually called the law. It did not belong to the mining place. Because the boys mom had paid 30 dollars for the bucket of rocks he was panning and it was dirty and covered in dirt and crust like the other rocks. The police could not do anything about getting the stone from the boy. They then took the boy in the gift shop and were offering him to trade it for something. They were offering this boy 200 dollar gem stones that were polished already for this ruby. This ruby was about the size of a golf ball. His mother wouldn’t let him trade it because she thought it was worth more. And wanted to get it appraised. The staff of that store did every thing they could to get that ruby. They even called the owner who also looked like he was about to combust when he seen it. He even offered the boy 300 dollars in cash for it. But his mom wouldn’t allow it. After a whole day of commotion we left. And the boys Mom took it and had it polished and cut and appraised and it actually was very valuable. She sold it for 9,000 dollars. If she had not been there, they would have gotten that ruby from that little boy for free by scare tactics or got a very valuable gemstone for a 200 polished rock.

I prayed for a certain type of carpet bag with tan tapestry with flowers embroidered on it. I walked into Goodwill on the pink tag sale day, right up to my case, picked it up, and the tag was pink $3.99. I got it for $2 bucks! Pink tag day is half off. Cool beans! I didn't know that. When I got home I opened it and found a rabbit shaped candle holder and a candle depicting Cancer and the constellation on the glass. The wax inside smells great, I'm melting it in my scentsy burner. The second candle was fitting because the bag I bought is for my visits to chemo treatment. I love the bag and got bonus candle stuff too.

I have found some cash and some good books in thrift stores, though it'd be nice to find something worth MILLIONS!!! But the greatest Blessings I've gotten have come from cardboard boxes in the back of someone's truck or on the side of the road... MY DOGS!!!! THEY ARE MUTTS! THEY ARE BEAUTIFUL AND THEY ARE PRICELESS!!! 🐕🐕🐕

The priceless part is that you have the insight to realise something most people never will. And I m sure your dogs appreciate the love you give them. You're blessed to have each other.

Been buying many everyday items at thrift stores just in the last couple of years. We have 2 small children - so toys, books and clothing. That alone has saved me at least a couple thousand dollars.

The guy who purchased the Declaration of Independence, Mike Sparks.. is not who they have pictured. He is actually a Tennessee State Representative. He lives about 6 houses down from me and we grew up 2 houses away from him. He's a used car dealer and wrote a book. Just thought you folks would like that bit of information. He also doesn't like people knowing he made money from it but I've seen his story in several places including on Matt Santoro's page.. So, be sure not to mention it to anyone LOL!!

Since the Thrift shop song came out it's cheaper to buy some stuff brand new! Most store's get items appraised or research them online before selling

I found a dead rat inside the lining of a recliner I bought!!! I immediately contacted Sotherby’s to have it appraised and I was just as quickly informed it was worth the heady sum of being promptly hung up on. But, I know better then that. I’m hanging onto it because I’m convinced this rare find is certainly worth between .05 and, at it’s high end, .10 if offered at an audition that included international bidders. Especially since I have kept it in the exact spot I originally uncovered this one of a kind treasure. As well as including the recliner that enshrines it for just the cost for me to ship it. That was 25 years ago and although I’ve had countless offers, I’m still holding out for the right buyer! Could it be you?

I found $2000 cash in a mens jacket I had bought at a thrift store once. I had it in my basement for 3 years and was going to give it away when I checked the pockets because the jacket seemed heavier than it looked.
Another awesome find was a gilt handpainted 18th century snuffbox that was being sold as what looked like a set of coasters for 50 cents. I recognized it when I later saw it on a European version of antiques roadshow.

I was browsing through the toys at a local Goodwill back in 2015 and came across some foam Bionicle weapons for a couple bucks each. Being a major Bionicle fan, I of course got them just so I could add them to my collection, but something told me to look them up (as at that point I wasn't even aware they existed) and discovered that the red one was worth about 40-ish dollars as it was a fairly rare item that was part of a limited release promotion at certain LEGO stores, but the blue one was so rare that no one had one to sell on any of the major sites, and the only bit of information I could dig up on it was that it was part of an even more exclusive promotion than the red one.
Both are now hanging proudly on my wall.

I made a lot of finds at Value Village, otherwise known as Savers. I found a Reebok edge Buffalo Sabres jersey around my birthday selling for $13 ($150 retail). Since then, I got in the habit of frequenting thrift stores and have made some unique finds ever since.
