  • Who was RN Kao and how did he shape India’s external intelligence agency R&AW? SNI and Bharat Shakti Founder and Editor-in-Chief Nitin Gokhale has authored a book on the ‘Gentleman Spymaster’ that will be available in mid-November. In this conversation, the author previews the man, his previously unknown private and public life and how he shaped crucial parts of history.
It provides never before details of the crash of Air India's ‘Kashmir Princess’, with investigations revealing a Taiwanese plot to assassinate then Chinese premier Zhou Enlai. It covers India's 1962 debacle, the role of the U.S. and how Lop Nur in south-east Xinjiang was identified as a nuclear test site.
Did you know that an Indian mole in General Yahya Khan’s office provided crucial intelligence to the Indian Air Force? There are also details of India's covert role during the Bangladesh war of independence.
Gokhale deep dives to give us an insight into the understated yet stylish Ramji Kao and how he built the R&AW. How did Kao deal with the criticism that followed the assassination of Mujibur Rahman? How did he cope with allegations that compared R&AW to Germany's infamous Gestapo?
In the foreword, India’s National Security Adviser Ajit Doval writes: “Personally, blessed by Ramji Kao’s 99-year-old wife, Malini Kao, I am sure this book will be read with great interest not only by intelligence professionals but also by common citizens in the years to come”. #RNKaoBiography #GentlemanSpymaster #R&AWFounder #NitinGokhale

Nitin Gokhale is laying bricks for India's superpower future, in his own little way! Sri RN Kao was truly a saint who propelled India to strength after an era of tumult. He may have had his little flaws, but his shoes were/are/will be difficult to fill. Kudos to Indira Gandhi for deploying him in critical projects and backing him up. India needs a few more Kao-s to achieve the param vaibhav that she is destined to since eternity.

K sankaran Nair was the number 2 for Raw and he resigned early due to the janata party.
That is why NF suntook became Raw chief.

We can't say that the chiefs of such agencies have done some wonderful work to build the organisation from its grassroot levels. But,most of the people who go to top level posts rarely handled the ground work. Some times they are completely cut from ground situation due to their posting in the AC rooms from the beginning of their career.Even after 70years of Independence the Bureaucratic structure ,promotion, motivation levels are some times worst than third world country. There are certainly exceptions. But,we have to admit the reality. Then only we can work more sincerely and build robust organisations in India.Else,we continue to live in fools paradise.

LOL , one of the RAS officers wrote in his book how the officers from Indian Army failed in Intelligence collection. Post Kargil war one of the Lt Gen blamed the entire intelligence failure on R&AW , to which R&AW asked them about MI & their Intelligence contribution. The Lt. Gen couldn't answer. Also FYI , the RAS officers are actually civil servants themselves who choose to change service once their foundation course at LBSNAA is over. There are many Bureaucrats serving in R&AW on ground , that you & I have no idea about.
