Minimalist Shirt Collection // Versatile & Interchangeable

- If you wanted the bare minimum number of shirts that would have you covered for any occasion, how many shirts would you need? Minimalism may be super trendy right now, but that doesn't mean the philosophy isn't worth exploring, especially for those of us who like to dress well.
Having a "minimalist" wardrobe and minimal shirt collection is appealing for a few reasons. First, it takes up less space. Second, it makes deciding what to wear much easier, as you don't have as many options to choose from. Third, and often overlooked, it allows you to have a sort of personal uniform, as you'll wear more-or-less the same thing every day.
Of course, the minimalist wardrobe doesn't really work if the individual items don't work well together. For that reason, I recommend buying mostly neutral colors, especially for basics like shirts and pants. You can always add flair and personality with your accessories.
Being a stylish minimalist also requires a bit of thought about your lifestyle. Minimalist or not, a broke college student has a different set of constraints and needs than a corporate lawyer.
But if you do take the time to understand colors and your unique needs, you'll be able to build a sparse collection of clothing and accessories that has you covered for any occasion.

You’ll notice most of the hardcore “minimalists” that are out there are CZcamsrs or bloggers - who have no dress code. Nothing wrong with that, but certain lifestyles have lifestyle requirements. Those of us who have office requirements or maybe don’t go to an office, but have certain professional expectations around our style might have less versatility. Someone like Steve Jobs wore the same turtleneck and jeans, but he also was someone who nobody could tell him what to wear, even if they wanted to. Even if he were at your wedding, he’s Steve Jobs. If he doesn’t want to wear a suit, who would tell him he had to? Great video, Brock! Minimalism is about being intentional about what you own. If you truly get use out of 11 shirts, or 15, or even 20, that’s the whole point. It’s just about making sure nothing goes to waste and nothing is owned for the purpose of being worn, but the practice of being clutter.
Pants and shoes would be awesome. Great video hope to see more.
Definitely No.1 youtube channel for men's guide on fashion. Been waiting for this minimalist shirt video since the pants collection.
I am basically re-tooling my wardrobe around your color/style advice for the summer. Your videos are great and fall right in line with my view of color associations. Thanks man! Can’t wait to see your summer videos
What you said at the end of the video- you captured that so well. It’s about intentionality, which is different for each individual. Great video!
I liked the way you inserted the color swatch stills into the video! It is a great way to help guys visualize why the looks you've put together work so well.
You and The Kavalier need to do more collaborations!
You give solid advice to young men in establishing a wardrobe style with essential principles that last a lifetime. An essential point is a personal uniform makes life much easier and allows you to focus on moe important things. You aren't bothered by trends, latest styles, the expense of short term clothing and more. You aren't out of style but not trendy. That's true minimalism I think and has worked for decades for me.
Thank you for the suggestions. As someone not exactly without taste who absolutely hates shopping I find your website and channel very helpful. Keep up the good work and please post more minimalist content.
I love how you show the color patterns, it's the best way to actually see what colors you're talking about. And generally your videos are so informative and well structured, love watching them
Thank you!
Fantastic video Brock! I agree with your minimalism explanation as well. Keep up the good work 👍🏻
Great video. As someone who is visually impaired and tries to help other blind/visually impaired people be more conscious about their wardrobes, I think the information is very descriptive and straightforward, which is helpful for us who may not be able to see well (if at all). I also love the minimalist approach because it narrows down what we have to navigate through in order to put together a great looking outfit. Keep up the awesome work! 👍🏾
Great video! I had watched it some weeks ago, but had to look for it again , since I'm planning to get a couple of smart shirts and dress shirts. Realizing this video is incredibly useful and informative yet very compact. Awesome, thanks a lot!
Great video, thank you!
time to trim the fat. even after a recent purge, i still have stuff i don't regularly wear that's taking up precious closet space. great video.
Same. It's an uphill battle, especially in our line of work.
Love the closing comments about the definition of a minimalist closet. It really does differ/vary depending on the person and it sucks when people impose their definition on somebody else. It's a very slight tweak but I find swapping "essentialism" for "minimalism" to be really helpful. Minimalism naturally focuses on "minimizing" and can result in people trying to compete and have the least amount of items. Essentialism on the other hand focuses on what you said -- trimming the fat and only having what is essential to us. Just my two cents -- great video as always!
LOVE essentialism!
Okay
Amen! Again great video! You always show great, professional photos!
This is 100% right - don't keep clothing you don't wear! You have the best videos on CZcams.
PS nice background ♡
Minimalist/versatile clothing pieces are a great way of making style easy for people who care about looking good but don't want to make it a priority!
Well said!
Love your definition of minimalism!
White t shirt is a must for me...along with all the ones you mentioned
Exactly the video I needed! Thanks Brock.
Love your channel Brock. I’m 5’6 too. You give the most useful advice 🙌🏻
Thank you,a real helpful video with plenty of examples to sustain your explanations!
Loved this! More minimalist stuff please! Anything uni student specific would be great too
What a cool dude, I love your videos, thank you for sharing these tips.
This is some terrific advice! Thanks!
Great conclusion. I Really like your attitude and approach about minimalism
This video has described 90% of my shirts down to the colors. Thanks for the confirmation! There is minimalism and there is practical. Of course, you need the number of shirts you prescribe unless you don't believe in wearing clean clothes. Living in Southern California I would not sacrifice my navy flannel shirt. And I need a linen shirt. We do have 2 seasons. The one casual necessity for me that you omit is a chambray shirt, especially for layering. An alternative to a sweater.
Great video Brock! I get many useful and classy tips from your videos.
You're really out there helping men to be modest in their choices of appearance and mind-thinking at the same time.
I'm inspired by the matching of your shirts collection.
Love it, but I'm living in an ever tropical country: Malaysia.
And some of these are applicable and some are not.
Thank you.
Your content gets better every time! I especially like your minimalism videos
I like how your style looks thanks .
I love this more more more! I am a minimalist so this helps me out. Shout out from Jamaica
Do more of this minimalistic series
In the works...
I really like this as I am losing weight and moving to a more minimal wardrobe for the sake of budget. I use to feel I needed a ton of clothes but really it got to be too much. Now I want quality over quantity.
This is a great comprehensive overview, Brock!
Really like it, minimalist with style 👌.
How about doing this for pants as well?
On its way!
@@BrockMcGoff lets get it Brock!
Hiếu Bùi Minh
1 set of good casual jeans. Selvedge ideally, but get whatever suits your taste.
1 set good gym shorts. If you don’t workout get some normal Bermuda or khaki shorts. If you need your backpack to fit in your pants get cargo shorts.
1 set dress pants. Whatever goes best with your wardrobe. Navy is good, or you could go the olive green route too.
That’s all the pants you need.
Đồng chí man!!
Great advice Brock! Thanks! 😃
I agree with you and i already have same type wardrobe before watching this video.
Havent been watching your videos for a while, so seeing that new haistyle now and loving it, especially since I am also trying to grow my hair long ;)
SUPER helpful video! I have struggled with getting a capsule wardrobe in place as it truly does cost too much $$$, effort, time and emotional energy to have more stuff!
As I’ve commented before, your channel is by far my favorite men’s style channel on CZcams! Videos like this only affirm that believe. You don’t bombard us with sponsored contend, you don’t try to force your opinion onto us. It feels like you only do videos about topics that you personally enjoy, and that is really coming through to us viewers in terms of quality and in terms of value the video provides for us. Other CZcamsrs with 200k subscribers have already sold their soul...
I agree 100%. IMO, The Modest Man and Style OG are the cream of the crop for the average guy who is trying to look his best and dress appropriately for the occasion.
SUBJECTIVISM !!!! A lot of channels out there, post videos of their fashion advice as some sort of universal law and not an opinion.
You sir, have gained a new follower 💪
GREAT VIDEO
I'm going to throw everything out my closet now. LOL
THANKS
Peace ✌
Thanks for the information; this has changed my dressing tremendously.
Glad to help!
This is so great and helpful. Thanks.
Thank you for this!
Sound advice. Thank you
Amazing video and amazing channel and amazing job friend 😀😎👍
Thanks for the information. Blessings.
Great hair!
I've been growing mine out too.
Glad I watched this. Time to throw out all my high school flannels and tailor up my nice casual / dress shirts.
Nice video and I like your choice of colours (UK spelling!) keep up the good work 👍🇬🇧
Went to live with monks in Spain for 2 weeks. Returned and was inspired to get rid of most of my materials. Their minimalism is different from mine, but was still inspired as a Catholic.
I got rid of about 80% of my possessions and found the temporal benefit of a capsule wardrobe.
You should do more of these!!
Wanted this video for a long long time
Long hair is lookin great. Been growing mine out also
Im 5'1". So glad to find ur channel. Subbed!!!
Nice vid as always Brock! Any number in the teens or less is minimal to me! IMO
Great Info Brock!
This is exactly what I had before, thanks for the help
Great video man. I like it.
You are a perfect role model in terms of style
Means a lot, thanks man 🙏
Thank you! make it easy.
I think this is really solid, even for people like me who will never go minimalist (cause laundry) with maybe a caveat to add that maybe you need more of a certain kind of clothing for work etc. you might need to lean into that type more, or maybe that's where you can add those extra diverse pieces. Or if you want to keep that minimal aesthetic a set of duplicates. I would in fact say most people need more of one kind of shirt as very few people have such a balanced life.
I need plenty of t-shirts as that's what I need for work (changing clothes for the cleanroom 3 times away makes them the best option) and also I don't want to be doing laundry the whole time. I definitely don't need all my formal or even smart casual shirts as I really only need smart casual at the weekend and formal for events a few times a year. If I was at a desk more I'd probably want 6 solid smart casual options again from a washing perspective, but I could keep . White, grey, blue, navy Oxfords, a check flannel and another, but that would let me cut my t-shirts down.
I'll never be a minimalist, but this is still really useful.
I just watched you on an interview with Over 40. Since we’re both the same height, I’ll be watching your videos for tips and insight in the fashion and style world.
Great stuff. You have similar taste and philosophy to mine
Amazing 🙌🏻
Great advice!
Dude your like to dislike ratio is actually nuts, everybody loves you
Thank you so much!! 🙏🏻
Great video as always...Let's put MM over 200k!
Here we go! Something a cheapo like me can really get behind!
awesome ! come in right time
Someone once described minimalism and essentialism to me with this example: Imagine that you had 30 ties (or shirts). Some you got years ago but never got rid of, some were given to you, but you didn't really want them. You really only wear 4 of them regularly, and 2 of them on special occasions. What if you only kept those 6 "good" ties? You wouldn't be depriving yourself. Rather, you would be getting rid of the crap you didn't want anyways, and you would be wearing your "favorite" ties everyday!
PS-- My minimalist color scheme is light blue, olive, white, and light grey!
He-Hey it's the hair guy, good stuff man
I am in a transition, as I have been losing weight. But I was thinking about switching to a minimalist wardrobe once I reach my goal weight. At the beginning of the summer, I bought 6 summer shirts to get through the summer, and to fit given the weight i gained over the winter. Of those, I actually am only wearing 4 regularly, and the thing I noticed about those 4 is their versatility. They are all shirts in a summer weight that can transition from business or business casual to casual. None are really dressy, but none look out of place with a jacket and tie, but all can be worn with khakis or shorts if necessary. 3 of the 4 are solid colors, and one is a simple repeating pattern that looks great with a plan jacket and tie.
So my thought was, this winter as i get closer to my goal weight, to throw away or donate a lot of the cheaper shirts I have, keep the best ones, and buy a few new ones so I have a small collection of really good shirts that would include 2 white, or off white oxford shirts, 2 blue shirts, and 1 other color for a change of pace. So long as I keep up with my laundry every week, I should be better off than I am now with 25 or 30 shirts in different states of repair or disrepair and different sizes. And it should make getting dressed a lot easier.
Always dope stuff Brock
🙏
Thanks for the tips
I’m going from Hawaii to Wisconsin by the end of the year. Time to get my winter game up.
Oh wow.
10 or 11 is good idea👍💡👏
That might be your best vid.
i liked and subscribed after the first edit/transition
I have a capsule wardrobe and try to be as minimalistic as possible. But having enough shirts for the entire week (+1 backup) is in my opinion much better than owning only 1 or 2. It is much easier to do laundry once a week instead of washing your shirts every second day. It's even more environment friendly if you use a washing machine for a pile of clothes and not only for 2-3 pieces.
Great video Brock. Agree with your definition of minimalism. I would personally add a denim or chambray shirt to the mix - it gets lots of wear in my minimalist rotation.
Nice addition!
I would add some v-neck performance fabric undershirts to prolong the life of the exterior shirts by protecting them from bodily sweat, oils, and dead skin cells. Along with a bit of spot cleaning I have had no need to wash my expensive silk camp shirts and linen blend polos this last summer. The undershirts took a beaten of filth and washing instead.
Would love a video on how to balance the minimalist philosophy with someone who is also active during all seasons of the year. Gym, Golf, Work travel, skiing, sporing events, etc. Find it hard to limit my wardrobe as i gain more hobbies or interests.
Great video!
I was waiting for this video for very long tym, thnkzz
If you could do the shoes minimalism collection, that will be great addition!
Great video!!
Please make one for pants. I own over 10 pants but every morning I still don't know what to wear and have to put them on then take it off repeatedly until I find something.
Greetings from Brazil!
Great video I’m actually lost in a pile of shirts, I think I have purchased to many of them sometimes it’s like you mentioned overwhelming to choose and put together an outfit. I’m just not sure what to trim I like and use all of my shirts, I’m heavily involved in church and need at least five different outfits every week, not counting the everyday casual stuff
Darn True about what minimalism is. Keep it up sir =)
Thanks, will do!
OhMyGodIloveYourChannel. So underrated.
Much appreciated!
🔥🔥🔥
Well said!!
I think I need a wardrobe overhaul.
the real question is: Does it spark joy?
That is a great question!
That’s a gay way to phrase the question. Don’t do that.
That's Marie Kondo technique
@@JK-vc7ie gay way? WtfZ
@@JK-vc7ie Sounds like you're just too insecure about your own masculinity, pally.
Really appreciate your content so well presented. I agree that minimalism is subjective also I think when you live in a climate that has all four seasons including a wicked cold Winter minimalism is a little more complicated. You always give me something to think about
Very true. Seasonal changes make it much harder to own less.
Somehow missed this, great presentation. The only thing would add is also know your skin undertone.
For example, I am a medium light Autumn with some Spring, so shouldn't wear white, charcoal, and black topwear.
I love this, minimalist plus modest man. Damn nice.
Thank you, sir!
