Teachers shouldn’t have to deal with unruly, disruptive, disrespectful, and violent students. Teachers should be able to teach without being fearful.
I agree but who expects a 6 year old to show up to circle time and shoot his teacher??? You'd think fighting over who gets the swings first at recess or who gets to be line leader is the general conflict going on in 1st grade classroom.??
@@CrystalM1917 🎯🎯🎯 agreed. 💯
The child who reported it to school teachers/staff should be commended.

The fact that the school administrators received 3 warnings about the child having a gun prior to the shooting and did not act on that knowledge to protect Abigail, the students or the other staff is beyond my understanding. I normally hate it when people sue other people, but in this case I hope she sues their arses off, and gets a hefty settlement.
I agree. Like we’ve already had multiple school shootings caused by their own students. What else needs to happen before they realize it needs to be taken seriously?
She can't sue the parents unless she can prove negligence supervision but she can sue the child and the judgment would go into effect the day that he turns 18. The Homer's insurance may cover it because it's not an intentional tort shooting someone by a 6-year-old

I am a teacher who has taught grades 2nd-6th for the past 10 years. The disability category is Emotional Disturbance (ED) and/or Oppositional Defiance Disorder (ODD). These poor children, for whatever reason, are impulsive, violent, aggressive, and extremely explosive. Nevertheless, these children are legally required to be included in regular classrooms with students without disabilities. From experience, I can tell you, that having one of these students in your room disturbs the entire classroom environment. Almost no learning can be done with such a student in the room and the teacher & students are anxious and on edge all day. I'm talking about destroying the entire classroom for hours because quiet time is over. Cursing out teachers and students to the extreme for literally no reason. We had to barricade the doors frequently when one student would go off and my students would constantly tell me, "I'm scared". Students with ED or ODD should not be in traditional schools!
Exactly! I work in elementary school and this is a spot on analysis of what goes on in our schools. They have cut funding for these special schools and now all these mentally disturbed kids are mainstreamed into regular classrooms, oftentimes endangering the other students and teachers. It’s a huge problem that needs immediate attention.
YES there are many special needs kids who should be locked in a padded room!!! I have worked with kids whose parents said they were autism spectrum but it was clear it was way worse than that… attacking other kids is NOT normal for a 6 or 7 year old. The good kids deserve a safe learning environment
My son had ODD but no problem at school! So uhm. Not all kids with ODD are that disruptive in class as you describe or violent just defiant at times with parents at home. Thank you
I agree. That is one of the dangers of LRE. The rights of the other students are ignored. Last week, an 8 year old choked his parapro where I teach. He was suspended for three days but should be expelled and sent to self- contained EBD.
As a School Counselor, I have witnessed firsthand the damaging effects that these emotionally disturbed children in regular education classes has on teachers and students. Those children are extremely unhinged and disruptive and the teachers and students are being traumatized on a daily basis! Administration and district leaders do nothing about these problems. The classmates and the teachers are the ones who suffer the most. It’s horrible!!

This is one of the many reason teachers are leaving. The straw that broke my back was when a student hit me with a chair and they asked what did I do? I don't think anyone deserves being hit in the back with a chair or bitten just for standing there. They literally thought I was the problem until the teacher placed in my class to observe for a week said no she was standing there and he walked up and bit her leg. He finally got suspended but it literally took showing all my bruises and a teacher witnessing the behavior to finally be listened to.
I'm pretty sure they believed you, but were just gaslighting you. They were hoping the kid would not act out when someone else was there. Since he did, they're now forced to do something about it.
Administration does not want to ever deal with problematic students. They'll avoid it for as long as they can do it.

James 1:13-17 reads as follows;
Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God,” for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one. I started grade school in 1969 at age 6 in a big city, and there was never any violence like this that took place. The same goes for junior high and high school. What has happened to so many kids today? May God bless this woman and watch over her.
I teach first grade. I’ve experienced a violent 7 year old. All the rights belong to the child. My school psychologist made ridiculous behavior plans then smiled and walked away. The district behaviorist was equally dismissive. Teachers and students are in daily danger from violent students. Parents don’t even know. And we can’t tell them.
I'm so sorry Linda. I appreciate all you do as a teacher. ❤
I definitely know this too.
Things really started to change in the 90s. And not for the better...for students or teachers.
Students have ALL the rights. Teachers have NONE! Smh 😠
Ms. Linda do you agree that spanking should be allowed in schools? Cuz I sure got my share and deserved every swat I got!

This is the type of ludicrous story that is _only_ possible in this country. I'm glad she's sharing her story with us now.

She just received the fruit of her passion.
She should be offered a job teaching at the best virtual school that she is qualified to teach at and a gratis terminal degree if she doesn't already have one.
The administrators rarely do anything about bad behaviors. They don't like the bad press. Look what happens, when you ignore it!.... I pray for her healing. I pray for the students who also went through this. I pray that those parents are charged with neglect. I pray that the school administrators are held accountable too! I also pray for all of the teachers, like myself, who are still entering classrooms knowing that this could happen at their school. You are brave. You shouldn't have to be afraid to go to a classroom. And you strive to do your best every day, even though you feel unsupported by everyone around you! God supports you! Amen!
Unfortunately you are right. If an administrator discipline a kid in school, their parents sue the school because they believe the school ruined a genius talent and and their kid is not going to be doctor anymore.
It’s the parents fault that the admin can’t do anything it’s the parents fault that complain or threaten to sue because their child is horrible and they can’t parent

He was displaying these behavior in K also. My source... It was posted online in our local news thread .
The same little boy choked his Kindergarten teacher.
Simple: behavior disorder probably conduct disorder. I have met extremely violent children and they’ve all been diagnosed with conduct disorder. Not always instigated by trauma- that’s the most interesting thing about it to me.
The child obviously was allowed to display cruel behavior without consequences from home for some time. There have been reports that he was well known for violence and the parent (s) had to accompany him to school. I've had personal experience with this type of child in the school setting. The administration expects teachers to handle this alone. "contact the parent" is the refrain. IF you can find the parent (cell # rarely work as they don't give the correct number) the parents turn it back on the school. Their child NEVER acts that way, you hear. You get blamed for the behavior or you hear the kid isn't getting work to do that is challenging their ability and they're bored.... Meanwhile said kid is terrorizing the class, the other kids on the playground, etc.

If there's one thing I have learned, especially over the last 6 or 7 years, it's that a significant portion of people in the USA are utterly terrible people. They will never understand anything that has to do with human decency.

The parents should be required to pay all her medical bills. It’s one thing when you have the one defiant student whose cussing at everyone. But an armed 6-year-old?? It’s insane.
The problem is the horrible school system that fails to provide the structure for many children to learn. Also, there are many teachers who are not dedicated and give a bad view of teachers as a whole.

I have been teaching since 1997. It has gotten harder through the years. Some parents have no control over their children. Respect and support for teachers has dwindled through the years. We were put up on pedestals during the pandemic only to be knocked down in the last year. I am not sure what can be done to help in situations like these.
Sadly, school shootings that sadly been occurring since that time period too. The 1999 columbine high school shooting was done by 2 armed teenage students who murdered like 9 kids and 1 teacher aside from several other being seriously injured.
As a nurse, I can somewhat understand the effects of COVID on your profession. Treating COVID patients during the height of the pandemic was hard. Nursing in the “aftermath” has been much harder. We have no rights when it comes to the kids. The kids have the rights. It's actually sickening and I understand why teachers are leaving the profession
As a foreigner who had done 2 years of HS here in USA the first thing the cultural shock as a 16 year old from overseas was the fact that students here would disrespect the teacher in all kinds of ways and the teacher can't do nothing except to send the student to a detention, which does nothing. In schools where I come from when any adult walks into classroom and especially the teacher you stand up and stand until you get permission to sit, you then sit quietly unless asked by the teacher to speak if you can't do that out the door you go or Infront of the class to report on material learned. You learn very quickly to respect teachers if not they will make you life miserable until you learn to apologize and to behave...and teachers work as a team and stand together when dealing with unruly student or intitled parent. And since all teachers and the whole school system is united around this kind of expectations in regards to teacher vs student vs parent dynamics even parents don't mess with teachers and principal. Teachers back home had more power and more rights than a student and I actually like it that way more than the way school system works here in USA, as it teaches a student boundaries, discipline and to respect authorities.
@@annazagorodniy713 I'm glad you learned that. Discipline is necessary and it helps other kids who actually want to learn to have a safe environment to learn. When I first got to my job and started making the kids listen, some of the kids told me they were glad I was there. They wanted a safe environment and the behaviors were terrible. I got straightened up quickly. I was once told a story about a child who vandalized school property while in the after school program. One of the teachers got a bucket with soapy water and towels and all of the children helped clean it up. The mother of the child decided to call licensing and that program got cited for corporal punishment because she didn't ask him to clean, she told him. I thought that was the sickest thing. Its mind blowing your country thinks it acceptable to keep guns in the home.
As a retired teacher who had concerns about disturbed children and insufficient resources to help them (particularly elementary school counselors assigned not to multiple schools instead a minimum of one per school) I send this teacher, her loved ones and her precious students healing energy, love and light. While I think this young boy needs vital coping mechanisms/improved treatment options, I do think it is appropriate to entertain accountability for the parents who were aware of his issues, yet chose to have guns in their personal possession. I regularly shared with my parent groups how much more children grasp concepts and earthly realities beyond what adults might think. Each and everyday, my students would disclose amazing observations and concerns in their commentary with me - much more than I had experienced as a child at their age. Certainly, social media has contributed to their exposure of current events and varied mores above their developmental phase - too sophisticated for them and a tragic loss of innocence so early on their journey in life.
Well said 💯
They didn't even follow what you are taught as a gun owner which is to keep them safely stored and away from kids. The fact that he's 6 AND has issues, you would think they'd be more careful.
Maybe I'm too cynical, but this kid was bound to do this at some point especially since nothing was being done. If not right now, more than likely as a preteen or teen when the hormones kick in and gets more savvy on how he can easily acquire weapons illegally (stealing, "borrowing," buying on the down low, cracking the parents safe or even overpowering the parents.)
He still has a "second chance" in life where he can get help right now that he's little so he can have the best chance of leading a fairly normal life.
This event can also serve as a lesson for his parents & the administration/school district, but I doubt that.
@@angeryrat I so understand your experiences with your pursuit of a teaching credential and your expectation that your career in education might be finite even at the outset.
I had planned on teaching initially and returned to my original career goal after a number of years in private industry. I believe coming into the teaching profession actively later on held me in good stead. I appreciated the autonomy that was possible for me after purposefully selecting a non bureaucratic district so that I was free to craft my own classroom environment. I simply adored my years teaching 5th grade. I was so fortunate to serve my children, as I thought of them, under two outstanding principals, one of whom encouraged me to obtain a school counseling masters degree. I put that education to use daily with my youngsters. At that time, the district had one, just one, psychologist for 5 elementary schools, one junior high, one continuation high school and one high school. Of course, there were two counselors at the junior high, and one per grade level at the high school; however they ended up far too involved in class scheduling, and disciplinary actions rather than attending to children at risk before they began acting out.
I wish you well as you make your way. I have great hope that, indeed, there will be systemic change in the delivery of education. It is long overdue that our youth experience an academic journey free of fear and appropriate for what we now understand about developmental phases of children.
May they discover the world around them with joy and lasting meaning and may those who teach them be appropriately honored and compensated for their contribution to society at large.
