    Hello Mike, I haven’t come across your content for a while. This was very interesting! During the pandemic I completed Ministry School with the Church for Entrepreneurs. The weekly Assignments were to produce Audible 10 min Sermons which I uploaded unto a podcast called Vocal Points. It’s now been a year and I have this big vision and don’t know where to begin. This discussion was really helpful and I concluded that I should just start with small topics on my heart. I’ve never blogged before, so I’ll start there. Thanks again.😊

      Barbara, it's great to hear from you! Congrats on your ministry work. That's wonderful-we need more people preaching the gospel in this word that lacks truth. And, I am glad this has helped you find a new approach. I hope that going for the small topics to start helps get you to where you're trying to go!

    I have wanted to write a book for over a decade. I have started a dozen times. I completed nothing. I learned that my perfectionism has prevented me from putting something out there. 18 rewrites of the opening chapter because I wanted to write the perfect one resulted in none. So I share in the disappointment that I haven’t done more or even anything at all.

    • @MikeGastin
      @MikeGastin  Před 2 lety

      Do you have a blog? If so, have you tried just putting out small sections, one at a time? I am wondering if doing that might lead to getting more content out there that can eventually be pulled into a larger work, like a book.

    While you were talking, a solution which has helped me came to mind. I was going to share, but then by the end of your video, it seemed you organically came to the solution to this ‘problem’ without giving it a name.
    Recently I was introduced to a note taking system. This system was made for capturing and aggregating smaller ideas with the intention to eventually connect and organize them for publishing.
    It’s called the Zettelkasten system. It’s spoken of in a short book called “How to Take Smart Notes” by Sönke Ahrens. I think you’ll find the information there insightful.
    All the best on this new leg of your journey. Looking forward to what you bring into this world.

      Yes! I love this. I did a book review on Sönke's book and have been using the Zettelkasten method for just over a year now. It has been transformational and has helped lead me to where I am today. Here's a link to my video: czcams.com/video/BG1tfC7tSYw/video.html

    If you walk the individual steps to reach a target at the end you will find out that you have accomplished a journey.
    To me I think the main reason behind me being stuck and not moving forward towards achieving a certain idea is mainly being overwhelmed on how to achieve it on my own. I think smart delegation of certain parts can help in moving forward. for example releasing a video into your channel could be accelerated if you focus on preparing the topic and leave the shooting and editing to someone else. Also having someone other than you in the process will make you commit more and be more responsible.
    Thank you for your honest videos, I enjoy them a lot and I have no doubt that this channel will reach its potential.
    One more thing, please add some warmth to your studio as it used to be.

    I'm glad that I stumbled upon your channel and I think you've hit the nail on the head when it comes to the challenges of writing or creating something that is new or presents a fresh view of the topics already out there. Even in science, which is supposedly well-settled and which methods are seemingly well established and understood, you'd find that creating a paper or writing some piece regarding certain topics - you'd still face considerable challenges in integrating the sort of analytical framework with the insights or intuition. That process is, in scientific terms, non-linear. In more practical terms, it can be quite painful and demanding - full of doubts, procrastination, maybe even guilt. One could find bits and pieces on how to organize that process, but I think there is a lot that is subjective and with a lot of tools that work for some and don't work for others - so everyone's process could vary significantly. Thanks for putting it out there, I think many might find it interesting and helpful.

      Thank you for the kind words. Yes, my desire was to just share my thoughts, knowing that everyone will not necessarily have the same issues or benefit from the same solution. I tend to think in terms of providing answers/insights but realize that there is value in just sharing experiences, too. I enjoyed making this vid and hope some folks find it useful. We have shared notes before and here we go again. You and I are on a similar journey. Amazing! I am also disappointed with my frequency of publishing my newsletter to people interested in the applications of our biochar product, a climate change mitigation product that needs to be used at scale to have an impact. Just to summarize, every ton of biochar used as a beneficial soil amendment sequester three tons of CO2. That aside, I have read three books this year that relate to the content you have just shared. One was Iain Mcgilchrist’s the master and his emissary, the second is Mark Carney’s Value(s) book, the third was Thomas Homer-Dixon’s Commanding Hope. They are all books that deal with how people think, but they all come at it from an entirely different perspective. Have you read either of these other two books? I am amazed that good thinkers are able to bless their readers so greatly. They encourage me in this difficult world at this difficult time. As you have just done by this video. Thank you.

      Hi Rob-thanks for the great note. Like you, I've read McGilchrist. In fact, I've ordered his new two-volume book: The Matter with Things. I have not read the other two authors you listed, but I did buy a copy of Carney's book a couple months ago (on your recommendation!) and will likely tackle that one some time after the new year.

    Beautiful video, Mike! I relate because I've been thinking about publishing, books, journalism, etc. for a long time too, even though I'm younger.
    I don't even have a proper video out on my channel, however; or even a blog post I could use for a blog, but I'll keep trying, and your advice here will help me! even though I find all of that very challenging as well. It is encouraging to know that someone else, wiser, struggles with this too, and is thinking how to move forward. Thank you for your reflection!

Since last month I am for the first time in my life working on creating a product ( designing/engineering and manufacturing myself ). It is Hard for me because I am not an engineer, i've never create anything from start to end ever but what I do is just keep going and improve along the way.
    While I design the product i've learned how to perform all types of computer analysis on it, I am learning about manufacturing, logistics, materials storage, choosing machines to work with from the start. It is a new thing for me, different than publishing but the idea is the same. Create something new and Useful and distribute it to the world.

    Being wild is the secret sauce in my view judging from the person who changes whole industries in the last 25 years. I guess being in the Zone is probably the mind utilizing both hemispheres more than usual. And it might look weird to other people until they are faced with the fruits of such mind.

    • @MikeGastin

      The fruit is always the proof, isn't it? I like all the thinking and hacking and process, but in the end, one has to produce or it is just a personal enjoyment. I find it easy to enjoy all the things I learn, but I need to do better taking those things and producing something I can share with the world. I think the insights I shared in this video will help get me closer. Now I just need a little more free time ...

  • @PatrickMayfield-sense-maker

    I love this reflective content, Mike.
    I’m wondering, having read McGIlchrist for myself, whether our brains are designed for us to traffic across the hemispheres as frequently as possible, more than our creative processes will sometimes allow.
    For example, when I might mind map a subject, I must allow myself to dive into the detail and challenge the narrative sequence of what I have structured. On the other hand, when I am deep in the detail, my right hemisphere might bring me to change the order--over even the whole topic--because of what emerged in the left hemisphere process of detailed writing.
    What do you think?

    • @MikeGastin
      @MikeGastin  Před 2 lety +1

      Yes, exactly! I am still getting my mind around all of this (no pun intended here) and realize there are so many applications and ways to integrate McGilchrist's work. For me this is an exploration-we'll see where I end up.
      BTW, do you plan on reading McGilchrist's latest, The Matter With the World? I just received my copies (two volume set) last week and am excited to dive in.

    Hi Mike - we connected - really connected- and if I may provide some insight from my process. When a car company sets out to develop the next vehicle teams of techies develop an engine solution, drive train and systems. Creatives bring the panels and looks, and someone develops an interior, hopefully it drives good, looks cool and sum is greater than the parts- it gets launched and the press crawl all over it, they have a complete take of their own, comparing it, driving it, rating it, and lastly the buyer, and his wife sit in it - a combination of internal developments and external observations culminates in opinions, journo's opinions will not be techies opinions and all will be different from the wife's. But it takes all and over time the car will get a reputation, a position and a recognition - even become a classic,. Your quandary may relate to envisioning the outcome -- for you-or who ? Journo, Techie or Creative or market? Or a composite of various excellencies, anomalies or alignments. The journey is built on confidence and quality of input - the outcome has various evaluations - not just the ''Authors"- maybe the product will have differing significance for each beholder- the product needs to support the experience requirement of each - the initial envisioning the outcome needs to anticipate but not define the 'Guest Experience""
    PS i work in Hospitality not Cars.

      @MikeGastin  Před 2 lety +1

      All good thoughts here. I will say, you have one assumption which I think is important for any creative to answer. Before you ask who is this for, you have to ask, why am I doing this? If it’s for audience, then sure, focus on the expectations and requirements of your audience. The trap though is not all creative has to serve a market. We can do deep work for it’s own sake. Thanks for the comment!!!
