Born a peasant in abject poverty, Gendry learned an honest trade and became a apprentice to a renowned smith. Forced to flee, he decided to join the night's watch. When his friends were attacked on the road, he bravely defended them. He survived imprisonment in harrenhal and escaped with the help of arya stark and a faceless man. He was captured by the brotherhood who recruited him upon hearing of his skills. Unfortunately he was betrayed and sold to a red priestess. He then learned the secret of his lineage as the natural son of the king. His kings blood was used in a spell to kill three kings. He was rescued by the onion knight and rowed himself to kings landing. Years later, he joined the forces of Daenerys Targarion. He agreed to adventure north of the wall on a quest to capture evidence of the threat of the white walkers. He saves the company from certain death by running back to deliver a message to Daenerys. He returns to winterfell and fights in the battle to defeat the white walkers. Upon their victory, he is legitimized by the queen and raised to lord of the Stormlands and lord of the greatest castle known to man, Storms End. He continues to serve under Daenerys and fights to remove Cersei Lannister. Hundreds of thousands die in the battle of the mad queens. Upon their deaths, he is summoned for a great council to determine the next ruler of the realm.
The council elects him King Gendry Barathean. Rightful king of all Westeros. Lord protector of the realm. King of the Andals, The First Men, The Rhoynar, and the Free Folk.

It was beyond uncharacteristic of her (the Sansa of ASoIaF was ALWAYS courteous) and not just that, Edmure by all rights should have rebuked her for speaking to him in that way. @@factbeaglesarebest To be fair in comparison to Bran he'd be a far better king.
If we go by books we'd have a currently 9 year old going against a 20-30 something who has experience ruling the Riverlands for years. Even if they aren't a Kingdom, they are large lands and Edmure is one of the few Lords who shows concerne for the smallvolk, aka what should be any Lords job, if they weren't so caught up in who gets the biggest piece of cake in politics.
But since Edmure only had one of his really character showing scenes from the books and they made him an absolute idiot in every single other one, it was pretty clear that they'd make him an idiot here too.
Not that show Bran becoming a King would make more sense, the kid does have zero experience in ruling anything at all. I think there was a Tywin speech in season 4 about why only knowing things doesn't make you a good king.
To conclude: none of these would be good kings in the show, because the bad writing decisions started in season 1 (maybe they should have kept Jeyne Poole) and kept getting worse until they ran out of books and then it was a huge mess.
[Btw I get why they omitted Ned's fever dream and dreams in general for the style they wanted to go for but it kept us from a lot of really important character moments and they did basically nothing to work around it. Changeing something can go well if you know how to do it. But D&D definitly don't.]

      @TemariNaraannaschatz Před 3 lety +15

@Alexander Kerensky The 7 Kingdoms are
      -the North
      -the Vale
      -the Westerlands
      -the Reach
      -the Stormlands
      -Dorne
So far all what you said is right.
And the last Kingdom is the Iron Islands and the Riverlands. They used to be 1 Kingdom ruled by the Ironborn with their seat on Pyke. The Iron Islands are the 7th Kingdom, the Riverlands got split from them during Aegons conquest between House Tully and House Greyjoy, after the burning of Harrenhall.
So Harren Hoare was the last King of the Rivers and Isles and the guy was totally hated, didn't rule much and build Harrenhall which was horrible for the economy of the whole Kingdom and after Aegon came we became and even worse King, which lead to the rebellion from the Riverland Lords.
House Tully led the rebellion against Harren Hoare, their last King for the Targarynes and after Harrenhall fell they got the Riverlands for that, while the remaining Ironborn went back to the Iron Islands.
Aegon went there to take over and granted them to choose their leader as they did with the Kingsguard, only that they didn't rule for a King, but a Lord. They chose Vickon Greyjoy and after that the Greyjoys have held the title of Lord Reaper of Pyke.
So the Kingdom comes from the King of the Isles and Rivers with the seat on Pyke.
The Riverlands and Iron Islands are technically one Kingdom but the Riverlands itself are not one, because the seat and conquest came from the Iron Islands.

Jon died less than a year later after choosing to live in the coldest place in the world as the harshest winter ever recorded set in.
Sansa Bolton lost her crown several years later after a disastrous start to her reign. The toll of 3 major wars in less than a decade meant the new northern kingdom lacked sufficient food supplies and man power to last the winter. Thousands froze and starved, her lords rose up and she was forced into exile where she spent the rest of her years working in a pleasure house in Essos.
With no seafaring ability whatsoever, Arya and her novice crew became lost at sea in the vast uncharted ocean. After weeks without food, the ship turned to cannibalism, the lifeless ship is still lost out there somewhere to this day.
After showing up at Storms End claiming to be Gendry Baratheon true born son of Robert Baratheon Lord of the storm lands and liege lord to its inhabitants he was promptly beaten up by Stannis loyalists and thrown in a ditch.
Irritated by the fact only the North was granted independence, the new prince of Dorne and Yara Greyjoy rose up against the crown. The ironborn raids on the North contributed to Sansas downfall and the Dornish attacks on the supply lines from the reich were a disaster for Brans reign.
Disgruntled with the incompetence of the new lord of the reach, Bronn was assassinated in his sleep surrounded by whores from all corners of the earth. His lavish spending and refusal to act against the dornish invasions had disgruntled all in his sphere of influence, plots were quickly hatched to remove him from power.
The now again starving people of Kings landing rose up against their new king. With no clear law enforcement left after the massacre of the Lannister forces and the departing of the unsullied, only a few kings guard were present to hold back the mob. Bran was tossed from a window and fell to his death.
Brienne now having failed to protect two kings and killing another was branded ‘Brienne the useless’. She returned to Tarth where she fell into a deep depression until her eventual suicide a few years later.
After escaping the Kings landing mob through the tunnels under the city. Tyrion Lannister remembered he was Lord of Casterly Rock and Warden of the West. He returned home where he lived out the rest of his days drinking and whoring spending what remained of his family’s fortune.
With no clear heir after Brans death, the succession council failed to agree on who should be king. The country was thrown into the bloodiest civil war the world had ever seen. Hundreds of would be kings came and went, by the time the war was over, more than 150 kingdoms littered the country.

Tbh, that's probably what would actually happen in real life. Something very like it. At the very least the 7 kingdoms have been left in a precarious position. A handful of nobles have decided they want to run things a certain way, what on earth is there to stop one of the rest of the feudal lords overturning that and making themselves King / Queen of the united 7 kingdoms? Did everyone suddenly stop being human beings? Did everyone suddenly get "good" and "noble" and begin acting for the good of the realm? Did the rest of the lords suddenly stop wanting power for self and family just because Tyrion, Bron, Bran and Sam are in charge?

@@EfftupSmith Its stupid. Bran even said himself ''I cant be Lord of anyone'' - but he can be King over 7 nations? What?
Also Bran could have foreseen literally everything and teach Jon and all the others about Dany going crazy or the Night King getting oneshotted by invisible arya with teleportation skills.
Yet he remained silent and never used his new found power BESIDES telling Littlefinger that chaos is a ladder, which was the only thing Bran did. So essentially Brans entire journey to see the future and past only existed so he could troll Littlefinger and tell Jon hes the rightful heir... which wasnt brought up again, ever.
I mean D&D could have written it in a way that Dany (being focused on the throne since years) finds out that Jon is the rightful heir, and seeing how people love him and despise her ''Bend the knee or die'' behavior would finally push her over the edge and start a war against Jon and the north.
This would be content for another season without the constant garbage they pumped out past Season 5. Its honestly sickening to see how fast GOT vanished away from everyones mind with an ending that bad.

@@CODA96 Yeah, there was a definite change in the writing after they ran out of book stories. In some ways I thought it would have been better if Jon had ended up like Carrot in the Terry Pratchett books. Anyone important KNOWS he's the rightful heir but although he doesn't want the throne, he's always there to remind whoever is on the throne he could take it from them whenever he wanted so it keeps them from stepping too far out of line. But then I also thought it would have been better if the Night King won the Long night. They made a big deal about how they needed EVERYONE to fight to save the whole country. maybe Cersei should have been crowing to herself about her winning the Game of Thrones only to see all her enemies, now with white eyes standing next to the Night King and the entire undead army at the gates, she realises that her selfish stubborn fighting for the throne has cost the ENTIRE population of Westeros. Bran might work in the books, but there would be an actual reason, and it wouldn't just come out of nowhere.

The Night King should have advanced to Kings Landing. I believe there should be no argument that teleporting oneshot arya killing him and his entire army in a matter of seconds was dumb. Not to mention the guy never got to draw his sword.
But this stupid scene was already planned in S7, with the ''If you kill a WW, you also kill the Zombies/Dwights resurrected by him'' - which reduces the extreme danger of 10.000+ Dwights to the Night King alone. Thats like saying if you kill Dany her dragons instantly drop dead. It just spits on every single scene depicting the danger of the Walkers, because apparently you only need to kill the night King for EVERYONE to drop dead.
To the rest i can only agree. The plot of the WW's was driven against a wall, such was the brain of every character and every plotline such as Dorne, Qyburn, the resurrected Mountain, Jons heritage etc.
If you havent seen it already, i recommend Attack on Titan. It actually got inspired by Game of Thrones alot, but ultimately prevailed in its detail and deep lore, and never failed to deliver. Sadly GOT (the show) did.

YES. It is so infuriating that not only does Bran become king, and not only does he say that, but that the other characters act like it was an amusing thing to say and nbd instead of realizing that what Bran is really saying there is, “I knew all along that you would make me king in the end, so I allowed thousands to sacrifice themselves at winterfell to keep me alive, then I allowed a dragon to be killed, then I allowed Dany to slaughter and burn MILLIONS OF INNOCENT PEOPLE, then I allowed my brother Jon to be exiled...all so I could be chosen to be your king right here. Ha ha, cool, right? I could have said or done something to stop it, I mean, I could have warged into a raven and pecked out Dany’s eyes and killed her, even, and saved all those innocent people including children, but hey, it all led to me being KING so suck it, innocent people! Me getting the throne makes all of your deaths worth it!”
They ought to have all ripped him to pieces when he said that, not celebrated him! He’s worse than Dany! She at least was upset and angry; Bran just legit stepped aside and let her do what she did. Every person there lost people they loved and/or cared about, some of them lost those people because they died saving Bran, and he literally just said, “hey, your brother had to die so I could get the throne, so...sucks to be him!”
I still can’t get over that. All that “I’m barely even human, I’m not Bran, I can’t rule because I have to be the world’s memory, it is so super important for me to do that that I can’t even weigh in on your stuff or care about it at all,” was basically a big huge LIE because he knew he’d rule at the end. EFF YOU BRAN. YOU PSYCHOPATHIC SCUMBAG. You deserve to be killed by all of those people who just stupidly elected you, a kid with zero experience or knowledge, who says he doesn’t care about anything or anyone and isn’t really even human anymore, a guy who has proven he’s happy to let millions die a horrifying and terrible death if it means he gets to be In charge, as their king.

Sure there were fuck-ups from S04-S07 but most I didn't mind; except for Tyrion's brain going to soup and 'the best swordsman that ever lived' killed by a bunch of petty criminals with kitchen knives. But in S08 I was like.... wtf is this shit. It totally diverted from the wiki that D&D earlier followed. I expected an epic mind game between Bran and the night-king before they lost the battle and had to retreat further south (as in the wiki). But nooo, we got 3 hours of dark screen to look at which they dared to call 'the most epic battle in cinematic history' then some girl that got some 'Valah murgulis' skills got to kill the night king with the same technique she earlier used on Breinne of Tarth, coz FeMiNiSt MaRy SuE StUnNiNg AnD bRaVe 🤡 and it went only downhill from there. Like D&D totally forgot their set up that Jon was a Targaryan too.... to me it would make more sense if eventually Jon and Dani would got the throne and Targaryan rule would be restored with the both of them ruling benevolently and ending the war and create another period of peace and prosperity to the realm. Instead 'vahlar muglusis' girl forgot she could change faces, Bran went offline completely, and the Lanisters didn't know where the previous 6 seasons had gone, Tyrion cries for his sister while uuhm yeah that same sister tried to kill him by any means necessary, which is why he fled in the first place, the Dothraki got to respawn like it was a multiplayer game after they were slaughtered to the last man and argh.... D&D messed up SO big!

@@sarwatarannya8786 Yeah, ppl. misunderstand Westeros' monarchy. It's not an absolute monarchy, it's a feudal monarchy. The monarch essentially has to rely on the loyalty (bought or bred) of his nobles to exercise justice, taxes, public works projects, etc. Most monarchies work this way, even the "absolute" ones.
Given that by season 8 even the best of the Westerosi nobility are complete dipshits (looking at you, gaslighting xenophobic children whose irrational hatred is somehow proven after the fact), this means running a government in Westeros is and always has been a pain in the ass & will continue to be so under the new system.
I have no idea what Martin has in mind for all this. Like, in the event that Jon & Dany are out of the picture politically (hopefully in circumstances OTHER than her murder at his hands), Bran has decent chances as a compromise candidate at an honest Great Council a la Jaehaerys the old (not the impromptu nonsense in the show):
Edmure, lord of the Riverlands is his uncle.
Robin Arryn, lord of the Vale, is his 1st cousin.
The memory of Theon Greyjoy may have some sway over Asha, who may feel voting Brandon will help rehabilitate the Iron Islands to the rest of Westeros, given how badly the Greyjoys treated the Starks historically.
Even then, I'd still prefer an outcome with Dany as Queen. Just the idea that Martin thinks a half-god crippled boy with no claim would make a better king in his fantasy world than an adult woman of the royal house (who professes to do good & seems a reasonable enough person until the script decides she can't be anymore) leaves me cold. It's like he wants to re-write the Dance only make it MORE misogynistic

@@mantis2048 A Republic is a form of Democracy - why do so many people like to believe it's some kind of dichotomy when it's more like an umbrella under which a representative republic remains snug and dry from the rains of *MONARCHICAL TYRANNY!*
Seriously, though - that's democracy. They could have a representative democracy with the lords demarcated by present spheres of influence presiding over public bodies of peasants organized according to their occupations (literally the one thing in the world the peasants will be knowledgeable about) - thus giving the peasants a power block while putting a stop-gap in place when it comes to uppity peasants trying to stick their noses in shit they have no clue how manage.
Seriously, you're not going to let the dairy farmers balance the court budget. All they care about is their security and safety and livelihood - if you tell them to focus on the livelihood part, and let their liege lords handle the security and safety part - you have a symbiotic system - basically Feudalism - but with more town hall meetings. The symbiotic nature of Feudalism is affixed with the ability for peasants in their occupational bodies to elect executive officers and other officials which would speak on their behalf with the liege lords, and those officers would have an avenue in place to then reach out to the lord of their direct liege lords if they feel that those liege lords aren't holding up their end of the bargain.
While the peasant bodies function amongst themselves in a more direct and ad-hoc "Night's Watch" capacity, the lords in the rungs upwards behave more like a representative monarchy or republic - these different organs fulfilling different bodily functions in different capacities, but working to uphold one whole entity.
This is more of a thought experiment - one way this COULD go - than anything else, but I think your take on it is fairly boring and unproductive, to say the least.

Not only are they all illiterate, but most of them would never have left the village in which they were born. You're right that they'd only care about their security and livelihood - but they wouldn't see how spending some of their precious time meeting _somewhere_ (not in a "town hall" since most of them will never even visit a town) to "organise" with people they have no real reason to meet would help with any of that. There's a reason why only specialised craftsmen and merchants really organised in the middle ages and it was only in the 19th century with the industrial revolution that organising extended to much of the population.

As for Jon, fuck the North. According to Sansa, they didn't need her armies and dragons, cause they had badass superkiller girl Arya with plot armor so thick she could've defeated all of the attacking white walkers and the night King all by herself. This will probably get lost in the comments but; I dipped on this show way back in season 3 when they made Robb Stark LAUGH at his uncle Edmure's failure to light his father's funeral pyre. Robb would have never, never disrespected his mother that way; he was as honourable as his father, and he LOVED his family. They massacred my boy (right before they massacred my boy)
That being said, I love watching these recaps and I'm quite glad people are pointing out the absolute garbage shit writing and lazy plot holes.

    • @Glidus
      @Glidus  Před 5 lety +52

You know what, you're right. Edmure might be the show's earliest complete butchering of a character. Book Edmure is a generous, kind soul who truly cares for his people in a way most lords never do. He's a sentimental guy who embodies the principles of his house. The dude accepts a life-long burden because his nephew made a mistake. Honestly Edmure is one of the books' few characters you could say has a good, honest, selfless heart. He's great.
Show Edmure is a proud, bumbling buffoon who they want me laugh at in spite of the immense suffering he's gone through. Brynden and Robb laughing at him is an insult to all three of their characters. One of my favourite moments in Storm (high fucking bar there) is when Brynden kindly offers to perform Edmure's duty of shooting Hoster's pyre. It's just a beautiful realisation of what this family is all about. Absolutely ruined that moment in the show. I love the early seasons but they're not perfect. Making Edmure prideful and Brynden a badass old man who doesn't give a shit was a misstep.

It was more likely for a Cleon-the-Butcher type character to usurp her and establish a military junta by virtue of strength. Women aren't respected in Westeros. King's Landing is a city of schemers and the way they kowtowed to her and ceased to be politically relevant was embarassing.
It would have made more sense if she hid the death of Tommen (even by executing rumor-spreaders) and declared he was ill, then ruled as queen regent indefinitely in his name. She'd have legitimacy and as Varys once said "power resides where people believe it resides."
