Yabbying (Crawfishing) In A Small Irrigation Channel

- My 3rd yabbying trip for the season, but my first successful one! I headed to a small irrigation channel that I've been yabbying in since I was a kid and baited my 5 nets with some lamb off-cuts. With 3 hoop nets, an open top lift net, and a collapsible bait trap, I was a man determined to catch some yabbies somehow!
The yabbies were there, but it was far from a red-hot session. I found a yabby or 3 most times I checked the nets - enough big ones for a small taste, and half a dozen bait sized yabbies for upcoming fishing trips.

That was some seriously hard work to get a feed, Rohan. But, worth it in the end. Great session ✌️🙂
Thanks Tubby, it was bloody hot and the flies were shocking but I had fun haha
Here in Wisconsin I trap them too. Out of the Milwaukee river and some local lakes. They’re no where near as big as what you get. Average size about 12 cm. We call them crawfish, Crawdads or crayfish. When I was a kid we just called them crabs. I use cat food in tiny cans. Just slightly open the can and put it in the trap. You can use them over again too.
Cheers Dave, I was hoping for some bigger ones but they were certainly big enough for the pot. Haha yeah I know, I made sure I tagged the video with crawfish crawdad and crayfish so the people in the US and UK knew what I was doing lol. I haven't heard them called crabs before though that's interesting! I might try the cat food can trick next time
@@RKJFishing the cheaper stuff, the better.
Awesome that works for me! lol
That was the same bait I used here as a kid in Australia good old cat food tins half cracked gold! ❤❤
@@Jorre-Fisk work great!
Magic to watch on lazy Sunday arvo.
Cheers Gary
I'm glad you're having better luck than me. I've had several goes at a feed of yabbies this year, no go. I think the dams overflowing this winter have moved them around. The girl that works at the local pub said she saw" lobsters" ( yabbies) walking down the main road during the last big rain. Keep up the great content Rohan.
Thanks heaps mate. Yeah they have been harder to find this year so far, but I reckon they will come out of hiding when summer hits (I hope so anyway)
Well done mate. I really enjoyed this video. The only thing I don't like about where I live is that we don't have irrigation channels. LOL
Thanks Robbie. I'd trade the irrigation channels for some trout streams though lol
Love a good yab session. I unzip shrimp nets if I'm targeting yabs, let's em in quick and allows for big beasts to enter 👍
I haven't heard of that before, might be worth a go! Thanks for the tip
Still stuck here in old Sydney town but can't wait for the holiday break i can back out to thw farm for a feed of yabbies ❤❤ this is curing the itch till the cheers mate
Haha good luck during the holidays mate, I hope you catch HEAPS
Awesome mate well done, nice looking irrigation channel. Never been yabbying before. Been getting a few gippy crays recently, but don't really keep many of them.
Thanks Joel! Well done on the crays mate
Good little session on the yabbies Rohan, better than my trips so far Haha, I'm sure summer will provide us all with heaps of yabbies 🤞
Thanks Jacob. Here's hoping for summer
G’day Rohan, you’ve got yourself a nice little feed, mate and some bait as well.
Thanks Wayne, hopefully I can turn the little yabbies into some nice fish
Lovely Rohan! Yeah need some more warmth, not far off! 😄
Thanks Les, yeah it's finally getting hotter aye
Getting yabbies is fun whether it be with the nets or by hand 😂,
Had the best luck today. Went out with the fam and we all got 3 yellas (37,36,34) and bumped into 2 local cod, a nice silver and 4 carp. Decided to keep the yellas as a feed (3 is great between me and fam), anything more would’ve put back. The golbourn is super good for a cod or yella while the broken is more for yellas I found. My yella (the 34), was super silver, probably living around the sand.
Tight lines as always!
Well done mate. I've definitely seen plenty of videos of cod being caught in the broken
@@RKJFishing yep and I can speak for that because I’ve caught heaps of cod in the broken myself over the years especially 1 about a month back when I was going for carp 😂
Well done on first successful yabby session. Some nice bait yabbies there as well
Thanks so much Brenton. I'm keen to watch your recent Barkers Creek Res video but I haven't had time yet, hoping to watch it tonight
@@RKJFishing thanks. Credit to you for releasing more than 1 video a week. I struggle to get one out. My Barkers creek vid was from a few weeks ago when we had really windy weather so hoping to make it back there on a nice day
Haha thanks mate, it's certainly not easy!! Yeah lakes are shocking on windy days aye lol
Well done mate hope you enjoyed a beer and yabbie or a cordial and a yabbie 😂
Thanks Blaine, they were a nice side to the dinner my wife had ready for me when I got home haha
Bubba Gump Shrimp Company? 😎 That looked like hard work for what you got.
hahaha. Yeah it was bloody hot and the flies were shocking! Probably should have just eaten the lamb off-cuts LOL
My first time seeing a shrimp since the weather has warmed up i nearly forgot what they look like haha. Im going to put a net in tomorrow at work i need some bait size yabbies for fishing next weekend
Good luck Chris
Good stuff mate keep trying they will only get better cheers mate
Cheers Michael, I reckon they will be out in force once the weather is consistently over 30 degrees
Yeah for sure mate I have been out once down south got a few but I think it fire up down here soon
Plenty of bread and butter 😂😂😂 better luck next time.
My lovely wife had dinner almost ready when I got home, so we each had a few yabby tails along with her delicious dinner. Thanks Vincent
You may have only got a small feed of yabbies but I reckon the bait yabbies will catch a big feed of fish 🎣🎣🎣
Here's hoping! I'll probably take them over to the basin or eppalock and see what I can catch on em
@@RKJFishing looking forward to that 👍
Been looking forward to an RKJ Fishing video! I need to go yabbying, haven’t gone for AGES… Hey mate have you seen my video? Awesome video mate, keep it up
Thanks Cooper. Nah mate I haven't had much time to watch videos lately
@@RKJFishing That’s alright mate I was just wondering since it was from the campaspe
Me and my dad went yabbing in a farm dam not long ago and caught around thirty absolute monsters.
wow well done Xavier
Some yabsters are better than NONE!
Very true
How are the fly's.?
They were so bad LOL!!! My arms were tired by the end of the day from shooing the bloody things hahaha
What are those fencing for?
Behind the fence is a farmer's private property
@@RKJFishing ok
I don't think lamb has ever been a good yabbie bait mate
You might be right! I know lambs fry does very well because it's so bloody, but when they didn't have any I was tossing up between chicken drumsticks or lamb off-cuts and chose the lamb off-cuts haha. If they don't have the lambs fry next time I might choose the chicken drumsticks! What bait would you recommend for hoop nets?
Thats about the only thing carp are good for mate give it a try
