- Across the border from Syria, in a forgotten Lebanese city, sits an unexpected building. The Grand Hotel Palmyra. The hotel hasn't closed since it opened in 1874, even as war has raged just outside its doors. Owner Rima Husseini says that "no one has a right to touch hotel Palmyra, except for time."

Great Big Story is a video network dedicated to the untold, overlooked & flat-out amazing. Humans are capable of incredible things & we're here to tell their stories. When a rocket lands in your backyard, you get in.
This kinda reminds me of The Grand Budapest Hotel
the last line is touching "no one can touch, except for time."
this channel should be a tv show and should have like ten million subs definitely subscribe
Eira Sanchez It's on CNN
I have stayed here, once with my young son and once alone. It was so evocative & there are portraits and reminders of past visitors (especially from the '60s). Where else would I have stayed? In the village, I would have inconvenienced people who welcomed me, but I know their resources are stretched. To those who don't understand - I am sorry that you don't yet appreciate history.
you are very lucky! i would love to visit their someday
Sherifa Zuhur 😊😊
Do they have a website to scheduled rooms??
0:45 wtf hahaha from left to right, without connecting the characters 😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣
woww...i hope this hotel will always be there and running for 200 yrs to come...
then go book a room and pay for it.
i hope there will be a meme room
the room of dead memes
+castell then don't fantasize
I know this may sound useless but i would enjoy longer videos cause you guys are the best documentary channel ever.
Absolutely majestic. The hotel looks like an experience i would enjoy. love seeing my country getting featured in videos.
It's not that far from my home, i should definitely visit it someday
Its great to see Lebanon portaryed in a nice way for once. Thank you guys, sincerely thank you
My wife and I just stayed here in October. It's a pretty cool hotel for the history. But if you are expecting a 5 star experience it's not the place for you. But it's a great place to wander the halls to look at the old paintings and photos. Our room had a view over the Baalbeck ruins. For breakfast there was a lady making hand made bread the traditional way and it was delicious.
Fascinating - thank you
so evocative and beautiful
Awesome piece - keep it up!
I LOVE THIS CHANNEL SO MUCH
I love this channel, never stop uploading videos
Very neat - having spent my early life in Lebanon, I can sense the atmosphere.
Thanks for sharing =)
i love this channel
Stayed there 6 or 7 times between 1994 and 2003. It was a magical place
That is a really nice version of The Swan by Camille Saint-Sean at the end of the video. Anyone have a source?
I would love to stay there!
0:43 What.....?
Firstly, that's not how you write Arabic. You combine the letters.
Secondly, Arabic is written from right to left, not left to right.
I'd love to come here!
great story
I will come there, so beautiful, i don't wanna miss that hotel
Pretty cool. The backwards Arabic on the maps cut is pretty atrocious though. Did no one on the editorial staff at GBS catch that?
You are right Stephen, this is unacceptable!!! I am Lebanese and I have been to Palmyra Hotel many times, beautiful hotel with a soul.
Because white people.
Duh.
It's beautiful.
would've like to hear more specifics.it kinda evoked me though, in my own imagination
Still better than my house
what is the version of "aquarium" by Saint Saens was used? It's lovely
I really hope this encourages tourism to the city!
It's a beautiful little hotel :)
hearing someone say war torn about my country is painfull.
What?! I want to go 💕
I watched a 2 minute hotel ad thinking that it was the video .-.
It really was an enchanting old ruin.
btw the room prices at 2:09 are around 40eur for the single room
this is my honeymoon destination. I swear give me 15years or less. it looks lovely
Was this hotel in the movie the water diviner? It looks familiar like I have seen it in a movie.
I'm from Palmyra,NJ, USA
Any news on how this place is doing today?
The Waverly in Halifax, NS. was built in 1866... And isn't that old.
ok cool, but where are the roman columns at tho?
Please, who is the artist/version/rendition of "The Swan" instrumental at the end of the video? Thank you! :)
You need more subs! Keep it up
I have always wondered what would be like if all roman ruins and structures across europe, africa and middle eastern are still intact today.
why is this human condition
I was thinking of hotel cortez from AHS ;-;
I would visit it if I had the money.
Her accent is so dope..
Not sure if the Arabic letterings are to teach people or somebody ignored how it suppose to be written (right to left)
AHS Season 7: Palmyra
well, time doesn't pay bills...
it does
Prithvi Raj how so?
Soko Semske as the saying goes, "time is money"
It looks like kim shin and wang yeo's house hahaha..
00:43 the Arabic script is messed up. The letters are not connected, like Arabic letters are supposed to be, and they're written backwards.
I have noticed that I think because they used sort of low quality translation program, but the bright side of the video was great. The interviews were on points and the footages were wonderfully captured.
Anybody else hear The Swan in the soundtrack?
I am half Syrian. wish to visit Lebanon oneday
Check mark....
The hotel that time forgot? I wonder if there were any piles of Polaroids in crates
heard they serve the best covfefe in town.
Wet another treasure that would probably be destroyed by war
so... no Wi-Fi?
So sad that the ruins doesnt exists anymore.
Bryan Solano why?
ISIS! :(
Bryan Solano The ruins in Baalbek still exist dude.
Really? The name of the hotel is Palmyra, the same as the ruins. Maybe was an error of mine.
The name of the hotel is Palmyra. It's not in Palmyra, Syria; but rather Balbeek, Lebanon.
If you actually watched the video properly though, you'd have known that.
The Grand Baalbek Hotel
Zero comments..... interesting
So question for you Great Big Story, Where do you get/find these stories from ?
This is their secret and I doubt them to share it with viewers. Nonetheless, their stories not ultimately rare some channels such as Vox has some of common videos with this channel as well. These kind of subjects are always part of reddit so thy may have had info from there and with their budgets, they go somewhere and cover it.
Nothing in this video explains how "time forgot" it.
It has been mostly unchanged since its heyday in the 1950's, and because it is so close to the ruins the interior is decorated with 2,000 year old roman sculpture, as well as beautiful ottoman furniture and Art Deco/impressionist paintings.
+Randy Dandy Thus being a place that (metaphorically of course) time forgot, as it looks mostly like it did 50 years ago
"... that time forgot" is an idiom that means unchanged.
Sure, time does still affect such things, but the idea is that things change because time passes. If something doesn't change, then it's like it has been forgotten by what causes that change; in this case time.
CGP G I think it's supposed to be 'forgot time' instead of 'time forgot'.
0:29 Mmmmm That's a nice painting.
at 0:45 all the place names written in arabic are completely incorrect - nothing is joined up. its a shame you literally can't even copy and paste the place names correctly from wikipedia
Might as well camp in a tent for what they charge
is it alot? i didnt see any prices but you got to remember there might be exgange rates. in iceland a stake can cost you 21K but thats only like 37 USD
WHO IS LEBANESE LIKE ME?
LEBANESE PRIDEEEEEEE EHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
but bombs won't forget them
Wheres Gordan Ramsy?
Did y’all know that lady is George Galloway’s ex-wife
0:35
Because there is porn? (see 0:27)
She should've said "The smell of the building gives me asbestos."
The map at 0:45 is very inaccurate, this isn't at all how you write the names in arabic.
C'mon whitey, do your job.
I have noticed that I think because they used sort of low quality translation program, but the bright side of the video was great. The interviews were on points and the footages were wonderfully captured.
Amine Lemrini It was left to right XD I noticed when I read your comment
thats a normal english keyboard trying to write Arabic on it
it's not even connected xD
lul they wrote it backwards
1:43 GANDHI
Looks like a run down dump. I guess anyone in the Middle East with rubble for buildings can now pass it off as "time forgot", "majestic", "speechless".
SnoopyDoo tbh, it looks pretty cool to me
SnoopyDoo Actually go to Baalbek and you will change your stupid ignorant mind
SnoopyDoo so is your grandmother but that doesnt stop us from hating her.
