- Ioannis Ikonomou works for the European Commission as a translator. It's a prestigious position, and yet it still sells him short. You see, Ioannis speaks 32 living languages. He belongs to a very small and special group of people called hyperpolyglots who have the extraordinary ability to attain fluency in many different tongues. According to Ioannis, there's no special trick or easy way to become a hyperpolyglot, but the best way to start is to boldly put yourself out there and SPEAK.

+Girl Online Well it depends on the language, my first language is Turkish and it's phonetic so if you can write a word you can pronounce it, or if you hear/pronounce a word you can write it. But most of the languages aren't like this, for example English. In English words can sound the same but can be written as different words. This will make the writing part harder to learn. The difficulty of a foreign language is just a concept relative to our mother languages. For Japanese and Korean speakers, Mandarin is definitely not excessively complicated to learn at all. Being a Chinese speaker myself, I find European languages way harder than Asian ones.
YL lv True.
I mean if someone speaks an indo European language it is easier to learn them. I cannot make heads or tails of east Asian language 😂
Is that a real girl? English is a Germanic language, not Latin.

PSA: To speak 32 languages fluently and maintain them is nigh impossible. *Maybe* you have learned them all to fluency at some point, but with that number there will likely be some left in the dust long enough that you no longer speak them well or at all. ("Use it or lose it.") Unless, of course, you dedicate your life 100% to maintaining all 32 of your languages. Which would be stupid.
Besides, it seems several of the languages he spoke here weren't quite up to snuff. This guy probably speaks a lesser number of languages (who knows-could be 8 or 12 or 17) and has studied 32.

I wish i could learn languages easily too😭 totally agree with him on mandarin being difficult. Im chinese but english is my more dominant language and mandarin is so difficult because the grammar and structure is so different from english. To be honest though, i really could'nt understand what he was saying in mandarin cause his pronunciation is pretty bad. Also if im not wrong, he directly translated what he wanted to say in english in to mandarin and that kinda resulted in a weird sentence. :/
crazyabouthisrae HAHAHA yes he does need to work on his pronounciation and tones more. english is my dominant language too! but i use mandarin to communicate with my mom.
crazyabouthisrae Well its not that hard. You just need to be exposed to it and use it frequently. Like on a daily basis. My mom was from India so I learned her mother tounge without even meaning to because she spoke in it to her siblings and stuff
chinese grammar is not that different from english. yes, there are differences, like classifiers...but overall, its much more similar to english than korean and japanese, which are the completely grammatically different.

Oh your bilingual(think how you spell this) me too
I'm Greek and this made me feel proud for some reason
How beautiful it must be to dream in all sorts of languages!
I don't think Chinese is the most complicated language. In my opinion, the difficulty of acquiring a language is relative.
Mostly depending on what your mother tongue is....
Talking is fine, writing is when things hit the fan.
It really depends on your current environment, personal variables and cultural background. Let's say you're Chinese, then Japanese and Korean will be relatively easier for me due to the "boxed writing style", speaking isn't really a problem if you're willing and would love to learn the language. But at the same time, languages such as Arabic, Latin and Russian will be fairly difficult.
The same method can be applied to all languages really! The language that is the closest to your language may be the easiest to learn for most people. If you're introduced a language that is completely different from yours in every aspect then it'll be a bit of a problem.
PS. The speaking part is fine if you're willing to learn. But the Chinese writing system definitely kills.
It really depends on what language/s you learned first. If you grew up speaking english and korean you would find most languages easier because korean and english are related to most popular languages
this is exactly correct.
Mandarin, , vietnamese, cantonese and something similar to them (language with tones) are always the hardest to learn for me
Wait so what language does he think in????
Greek, because he's greek (I'm not sure)
Mau Pr not all the time u think in one language, sometimes u think in both. I speak Tagalog and I think taglish in my mind
Well I speak 5 languages and I think different depending on the language I speak. For instance thinking in German while speaking English is not really helpful and leads to vague sentences.
Jeff Lee sometimes when im talking in english, theres a word i forget or dont know, so my mind ends up thinking it in tagalog. its weird. like expressing ideas in another language is always so mch different in different languages
Most polyglots think in whatever language they're speaking at the time. When I'm around English speakers, I think in English; around French speakers, I think in French.
When he started talking dutch he had a very thick accent but it seems like he can talk his way around fine though
I think there's a number of languages a polyglot can learn after which the quality of each will start to deteriorate, considering the extreme amount of time you need to learn and maintain a language knowledge up to an upper intermediate level (where I myself consider that I have learnt the language). And 32 is way past that number. Judging from the comments from natives he is at lower intermediate level at best for some of the languages.
He seems to be much lower than even "intermediate level" in these languages. His Dutch is plain incomprehensible to me, what he said made no sense.
I'm from the Netherlands and I couldn't understand anything of what he just said..
The most difficult language is really a subjective question. In terms of pronunciation, Mandarin might be the hardest, considering not only the exotic phonetic system but also the tones, but grammatically it's actually one of the simples languages I've come across. In terms of grammar, Ancient Greek is probably one of the hardest I've had experience with. And, even though it's a dead language, Ancient Mayan beats Chinese out of the water in terms of script complexity.
Lmao I study Latin and Ancient Greek in high school, I dropped Latin because I thought Ancient Greek was easier.

I'm really proud that he is from Greece because I'm from Greece too
Emilios Ertecoglou me too
I speak most of the languages he spoke thru the video, his performance; excellent.
Why does everyone feel the need to ask if he's gay? If he says he has a husband, that means he's not straight. Besides, it doesn't matter what his sexuality is.
upside down smile, IKR! People need to calm down.
upside down smile straight men don't have husbands, ever.
but hes gay
ZeckDoesStuff what if he's bi?
ZeckDoesStuff wait nvm I just read something about it
He said one sentence in 5 languages. I want to know how many languages he can speak Fluently, not just the basics.
He speaks fluenlty 16 languages. He said that in an interview
bayern joan that’s pretty good
No that's his own estimation of "fluent". The only real determination of fluency is having at least 3 native speakers not tell the difference between you and the other native speakers. If they can't tell then that is true fluency. Or, if you think that's too staunch then call it "native" level speaker and then true fluency is when 3 native speakers don't have to try to understand what you are saying when you say it. Plenty of people here have said his mandarin was bad, his dutch was horrific and who knows what else people would say about his other languages he "speaks".
By his definition of “speaking a language” I speak 6.
Fascinating!
Yeah, don't know about the rest, but his mandarin is pretty terrible. Still impressive i guess
I've heard that Mandarin is easier for English speakers because they can identify certain tones and syllables whereas he is Greek (native language being Greek) and because they have a different writing system, it would be harder for him to learn and pronoucne
It's pretty good in my opinion
Turkish is pretty bad too
It's definitely not the best but I think it's amazing considering how difficult it is.
His Dutch was eh... I’m Dutch and was unable to understand him without the English subtitles.
he is such an inspiration, I'm at 5 languages right now, Romanian, French, English, Spanish, and Italian, and learning 2 others, Japanese and Korean, I really hope one day I will reach his level
This is how youth should be, dedicate yourself on studying
"how did he learn so many languages omg"

Greetings from Athens Greece 🇬🇷
Btw im half Greek and half Polish. All i need is 29 more languages!
I'm studying mandarin as my major in university and I do absolutely agree 😂
This person has a power that very few people have
I absolutely LOVED the part where he went from Spanish to Russian!!! I grew up speaking Spanish and English and I studied Russian in college and I also spent a month in Russia a few years ago for a language immersion course. It felt so normal to me when he switched from Spanish to Russian! I didn't skip a beat and for a quick second I didn't even realize that he made the switch only because I understood him perfectly.I studied German at the same time I studied Russian and I just love both of those languages!!! I should make a CZcams video about it.
His dutch was basically complete gibberish. Without the english subtitles I had completely no idea what he was saying. I am dutch btw.
Wow. Congratulations ❤️
I hope he can/will speak Filipino as well. I myself is also a lover of different languages, but nothing beats my mother tongue, Filipino.
