The Spanish guitar interlude was played by Steve Howe of "Yes". Each band member was portrayed as an art work by their favorite artist.
Freddie says "Don't take offence at my innuendo". He is criticizing the human race for war, hatred, false religion and terrible things we have done....but says we have to "keep on trying". "You can be anything you want to be." Scenes in the video show both the joy and the evil of humanity. He also asks a higher being if he exists to "answer our questions, to show yourself, destroy our fears and remove your mask". Why are you waiting when we suffer and want answers? This is no light, fluffy song but sung by someone facing death. At the end of the video, all the doors and curtains close on his life. All four Queen members were highly intelligent deep thinkers.

“Innuendo” is the opening track and lead single of Queen’s final album before Freddie Mercury’s death. The song, partially inspired by Led Zeppelin’s song Kashmir as well as Freddie’s illness, deals with mankind’s inability to live with each other and constant search for meaning. The song began as a jam session in Switzerland amongst Brian May, Roger Taylor, and John Deacon in the spring of 1989. “These Are the Days of Our Lives” is Innuendo‘s most significant single, given that it was released on Mercury’s 45th birthday, and that its video marked the last time his fans were able to see the singer alive, as it was filmed in May of ’91 during the final stages of his battle with AIDS. A ballad in the vein of “Love of My Life,” it was a song that carried a significant amount of weight given the frailty of Mercury’s appearance in the black-and-white video, later compounded when unreleased color footage from the filming emerged in Days of Our Lives. “The sicker he got, the more he seemed he needed to record,” explains Roger Taylor in the documentary. “To give himself something to do, some sort of reason to get up, so he would come in whenever he could. So really, it was quite a period of fairly intense work.” After seeing how well-received Innuendo was in its first two weeks out, Mercury pressed the band to strike while the iron was hot and work on new material.
“Freddie at the time said, ‘Write me stuff, I know I don’t have very long,'” May proclaimed in Days of Our Lives. “‘Keep writing me words, keep giving me things, I will sing, I will sing. And then you do what you like with it afterwards and finish it off.'”

'Innuendo' (1991) was the final studio record completed by Queen during Freddy Mercury's life... that record and the previous one in 1989 ('The Miracle') were written & recorded after Freddie was diagnosed w/ AIDS and he (and the band) knew that he was going to pass away... According to the members of Queen, they had 1 conversation and Freddie basically hinted that he was HIV positive and asked that they not discuss it any further and carry on making music for as long as they could. Only the band, their managers and Freddie's partner and ex-gf knew.
So, Queen closed ranks and worked... denied in public the rumors that Freddie was sick... but declined to tour. They still denied the truth to everyone, even after Freddie past partners were dying from AIDS.
The songs came out darker and more introspective in light of what the band knew... didn't have the levity of past Queen records. Brian May recalled that Freddie could not work for long in the studio... so the songs took time to complete, but Freddie still got on the mic and pushed himself to sing to his limits. Even after 'Innuendo' was done, Freddie put down vocals for songs he asked Queen to complete after he was gone... Those tracks made the final Queen studio album 'Made in heaven' in 1995.
By the time 'Innuendo' was released, Freddie was frail and appeared in the music video for 'These are the days of our lives' and that was his last appearance on film... the rest of the videos were made w/ older Queen footage. By the fall of 1991, Freddie Mercury was in poor health and returned to England to his estate... Just before he died in late 1991, he released a statement admitting that he had AIDS.
The lyrics to the song 'The show must go on' were very powerful in the way it closed the 'Innuendo' album.

Innuendo was an event when it was released in late 1990. It was advertised in advance and was first broadcast simultaneously around the world when it was released. It was like a movie and it took our breath away. Everyone I knew said at the time that Innuendo was the equal of Bohemian Rhapsody and perhaps even better. The song, partially inspired by Led Zeppelin’s song Kashmir as well as Freddie’s illness, deals with mankind’s inability to live with each other and constant search for meaning. It is sort of a modern piece of rock opera that seems to be Queen's '90s answer to Bohemian Rhapsody, I think the main idea in this song is about doing one's best - "we'll keep on trying, 'til the end of time".
The song began as a jam session in Switzerland amongst Brian, Roger, and John in the spring of 1989. Freddie's vocals are immense as ever, Roger's drumming will focus you instantly, John is reliable as ever, and Brian's guitar work is impeccable (the initial Spanish guitar solo is by guest guitarist, Steve Howe, which Brian repeats later) - to pick a particular star in this song would be unfair - everybody shines.

This quickly became my #1 Queen track - it has it all - the vocals, heaviness, melody, etc. I really seems like the next iteration of Bohemian Rhapsody, but not as 'fun' - it's definitely a serious piece. Special kudos to Steve Howe of Yes, for the Spanish guitar middle 8, it really helps to 'calm' the mood and provide a hopeful feeling before getting blown away by Brian just after, and return to the gloom & doom. Man I love this track!

All respect, but it's not a Freddie epilogue. Brian wrote it for Highlander. Freddie hadn't been diagnosed. If you like to think that, you certainly can, I'm not suggesting otherwise and just using your comment as a jumping off point. I just get very impatient with people in general connecting every Queen song either to Freddie being gay or Freddie dying. It's just not the case. It's an insult to the band to think they wrote over and over again about such limited topics. Sorry to use your comment as an impetus to getting that off my chest ;) Have a good day/night.

When I first heard this, I wasn't keen because it felt like Queen were trying to do another Bohemian Rhapsody, but then I found out how ill Freddie was at the time and realised it was a reflection of what was going through his mind and how he was seeing the world for what it was, and how people should never allow themselves to be controlled by the evil powers that be. I also love Heaven For Everyone written by Roger Taylor for his own solo album, with Freddie intended on guest vocals, but they also recorded Freddie doing a lead version which ended up on the Made In Heaven album 4 years after he died. When you hear the lyrics, you feel that it could so easily have been written by Freddie and how, because of his illness, he was noticing the things that really mattered in the world .

This song was never played by Queen live in concert. Freddy was so sick at the time of recording that Brian thought that he would have to take over lead vocals. But, as the story goes, Freddy climbed out of his sick bed, drank most of a bottle of Vodka, then recorded the song almost in one go. Just a few tidy ups. This is one of my favourite Queen songs.
To get an idea of how Freddy looked towards the end, watch "These are the days of our lives". It was Freddy's goodbye song to the world. One you know that and gaze on how he looked, it will bring tears to your eyes.
Another song where Freddy was beginning to "show" the effects of Aids was "I'm going slightly Mad". So Freddy and the others dressed up and wore tons of makeup to protect Freddy. He simply loved the craziness of the song.

At this point, the band knew this would be Freddie’s last album; on some songs, he could only sing a phrase at a time before he had to rest. So I think they put everything they had into it. Not every song is serious-there are some real rockers here and some silliness too-but “Innuendo” is a serious take about issues that meant something to the the band.

I remember the first time I heard the song "Innuendo" my freshman year in college. It grabbed me right away. The album is one of the most underrated in Queen's catalog, but I think it's their strongest work since the album "The Works." Lots of deep songs on this album, considering Freddie's diagnosis like "The Show Must Go On," "All God's People," "Don't Try So Hard." Even the goofy song "Delilah" is poignant, with Freddie saying goodbye to his cats.

In an age in which people are quick to take offence and almost argue that they have a right not be offended by anything at all, the line is a nice reminder that one's the things that made Freddie unique was was his penchant for outrageousness, and it's quite important to remember that even though the world of 2022 loves Freddie unequivocally, he was not a politically correct man a good deal of the time. I don't think the world would have been a better place if he'd been anything other than who he was. Keep on smiling, tread that fine line, and whatever will be will be.

Indeed intense and powerful lyrics with a sort of heaviness to them. Quite normal when one of the writers is facing his own “'til the end of time”. Yet the lyrics are hopeful and carry a message: “You can be anything you want to be. Just turn yourself into anything you think that you could ever be. Be free with your tempo. Surrender your ego, be free, be free to yourself.”

Fun fact: the flamenco guitar is performed by Steve Howe of Yes, Asia and GTR fame. Queen guitarist Brian May invited Steve to listen to the recordings, insisting that Steve should play on something, but for the longest time, Steve refused. He said that what he heard was already perfect. Then he stumbled across this section that could benefit from some flamenco guitar, something that Brian May - at the time - couldn't really do that well. Now, when Steve had found a way to actually contribute, he happily obliged and recorded said segment for the song.
