Can I complete my most epic mission to date? or will a hunting party end it.. [ENGLAND PART 6]

- This gargantuan adventure reaches its climax 19 miles from the North Sea coast, and as if this mammoth 5th day hadn’t tested me enough, I was now perched on the edge of a private hunting estate watching men furiously wave flags on my line to the soundtrack of multiple shotgun blasts. With plenty of farmland and another terrible forest beyond that, this mission was far from over. Will I make it through and become the first person ever to cross England in a straight line? Make yourselves comfy and find out.
Some speech might be difficult to hear - use good speakers/headphones if possible and use the man made subtitles

Mission across the Vatican City next? :D
How come you don’t use a red head torch when trying to not get spotted? it is much better in terms of stealth
Congrats!! So proud of this whole series! Cant wait for the next one.
Having a hotel on the line is the most clutch move
After seeing that, I'm convinced that Tom plotted this terrible line full of fallen trees just so he could brag about staying the last night in a hotel.
Out of all the things I've seen Tom do in these missions. Running across a private hunting estate while people were firing shotguns definitely takes the crown for most insane thing ever.
Id still throw in the "bridge" crossing from Wales 1 Part 1, that was beyond dodgy.
The swamp in Norway was also crazy.
@@kroeken God no, please do not remind me of this Norway swamp hole. So incredibly incredibly dangerous
Darwin natural selection 😊
@@kroeken I've had nightmares before and since very similar to what is seen in that video.
Ben and Verity absolutely thrashed you, they beat you to every single checkpoint . Good on 'em for giving you a chance !
This made me laugh, but Tom actually beat ben to one checkpoint earlier in the mission
Birdwatcher here. At 14:27, we heard a Ring-necked Pheasant.
Heard it several times throughout the video. I would assume all those loud wingbeats we heard were pheasants as well, as red or black grouse seems a lot more unlikely based on habitat and rarity (although he did encounter a red grouse in the moorlands in a previous episode iirc).
Ah, nice. I thought it was a wood pigeon.
i have loads of those living in my garden! there’s some girl ones too and they raise their babies here every year
Probably what the hunters were hunting lol

Next one should be Antarctica. Can you imagine how easy that is. No farmers, no fallen trees, no brambles, no hedgeroes, no hunters....
No polar bears either.
I was going to suggest scenic Death Valley USA but Antarctica would be cooler.
@@karlharvymarx2650 Only in the winter. Far too many ppl die stupidly even with proper preparation. A medic is also highly suggested it he does decide to do Death Valley.

Some random ass logs: ☠☠☠
Lots of Logs!!!
You'd be singing a different tune if you had to try to clamber through thousands of fallen trees that stack up to hundreds of feet in the air. That gravity could just decide it had enough and clamber on top of you all at once. Or like he pointed out, getting Final Destination'd and getting outright decapitated. He was taking serious risks in those barges.
"some random ass logs" sounds far too dismissive to me!
The logs were on their ass, that’s the real problem
Amazing how these sound like video game obstacles

@@_Jester_ The stakes on this mission were massive too though.
One suggestion I’d recommend (if you see this) is to use a red lightbulb on your headlamp. Lots of police vehicles use them inside because the red light doesn’t travel as far. It would help minimize your chance of getting caught by a farmer.
This is a deep pull from history so indulge me, these are almost gone memories, but way back, when I was in the air cadets, when we were spending a long weekend hanging around a couple of hills in Shropshire, we basically hung around with our eyes wide open in the pitch black of night for like, a very long time, and every time we had to look at a map after that we used a red filter on our lights because it wouldn't destroy our night vision, which we had built up by hanging around in a bush for half an hour while corporal dipshit opined at length about Pamela Andersons' tits. And scary sheep rustlers, who if they found us, would execute us wth shotguns. Later that weekend, somebody threw me into a river. Something to do with wavelengths and cones and rods and that.
Red light also doesn't make you lose your dark adaption ("night vision") so after using it you can switch it off and still see where you're going.
Only down side is it will attract stag party’s.
I believe Tom mentioned in the comments on a previous video that it made the footage basically unusable in his opinion
Everything the headtorch comes out I think the same thing
My uncle passed away last Tuesday but I know he watched these Adventure mission. He was 76 and it reminded him of his youth and doing his own little adventures not too dissimilar from these. Thank you for keeping him entertained for the last few years and allowing him to re-live his youth in his own head. Congratulations!! One of the most entertaining series on YT. The pub you are in at the end, The Ship, has a portrait of my Grandad on the wall. He was a fisherman at Seahouses for the majority of his Life and even has a brass plaque dedicated to his notorious bad language. I imagine if he was still alive he would of defiantly bought you a well deserved whiskey!
Something you may wish to look into for future missions, if you should choose to do them, is satellite tasking. You can pay imaging satellite operators to capture images of areas of interest, and it's not that expensive these days - with 50cm resolution (sufficient to identify areas of felled trees) you'll typically pay about £10-20 per km^2, with a lot of operators offering minimum orders in the 1-5km^2 range. Their services are cheap because they use imaging satellite constellations in polar sun-synchronous orbits (SSO) to get coverage of the whole planet as it rotates on its axis, meaning they can just wait until the target area is under the flight path during daylight rather than needing to do any kind of active orbital adjustment (which quickly gets into six-figure-plus PoA territory). Most of these satellites have very short orbital periods, on the order of hours, so you can expect to get images back within a day. Could be invaluable for getting up-to-date views of areas where you expect trees to have fallen in recent bad weather events.
Every Geowizard video has a sentence that has surely never before been uttered in the history of humanity. #6 - "But my clumsiness attracted no attention; and after boldly crossing a field that had a horse in it, I went through fields 8, 9 and 10 despite a bad hedgerow, onto the main road and in that perfect invisibility cloak level of light, into the final field of the day, where the homely lights of the campervan beckoned me home."
if this was in a book it'd be considered good writing.

@@nickdeal726 Lord of the Rings 2: Shire to Mt Doom in a Completely Straight Line
@@StuffandThings_ Hard but possible. I'd suggest using a line that starts in the North Farthing of the Shire, near the town of Scary. This line has several advantages.
You'd immediately cross the Brandywine river, and enter Buckland. The old forest would be a nightmare to pass through but luckily this line only cuts across the top corner of the forest. After that, you have a passage through the barrow downs and onto the open moorland of Cardolan. This part will be incredibly easy as it's just hilly land with no human presence for 200 miles.
You'd then have to cross the Bruinen and several smaller rivers entering Dunland, but this brings us to the hardest challenge of the trip - The Misty Mountains. Thankfully this line takes us through a part of the mountain range that looks quite passable. After the mountains we once again clip the very corner of a forest (in this case Fangorn) and that brings us to some lovely open grassland of the Wold. We can make good time here, as long as we avoid patrolling Rohirrim horsemen.
After canoeing over the river Andiun, it's a hilly climb over the dangerous rocky crags of Emyn muil followed by another tricky section in the marshes of the dead.
Finally this line takes us straight through Cirith Ungol. Provided you avoid being eaten by Shelob, it's a fairly straightforward walk to Mount Doom.
Edit: fuck it. I'm making this into an animation.
Between the length and the fallen trees, it’s fair to say that this was ten times harder than the Wales lines. Bronze deviations or no bronze deviations, it’s crazy that you pulled it off in the first place.
I can't help but wonder if he made some poor judgement or just had really bad luck on the forests
@@16m49x3 Its hard to know until he releases his run analysis, but I'd personally say it was bad luck, Tom is very experienced in straight-line missioning and I know he thoroughly scouted the potential routes, leaving him with at least one of the best options.
@@16m49x3 I think every route that was designed to go through forests rather than fields where possible would have been like this.
@@davidsnippe5441
maybe starting the trip based on going before the fieldhouses rather than starting it when the weather was less rainy also played a part
@@16m49x3he also got some really bad luck with the weather, he even said it in this one that even though that very last forest was the worst one of the entire mission, it was only doable because it was dry compared to the other forests a few days prior. The rain made it probably way more dangerous than it otherwise would have been
I'm surprised Tom doesn't carry something like a collapsible hiking pole just for balance on some of the creek/river crossings, and fallen tree sections. In some of my own adventures I've found that using a sturdy stick for balance has been indispensable.
I love the imaginary train line bit, definitely not trying to keep the police from knocking on his door again with that one
Again? What happened there?
@@noahxwing38 one of the older straight line videos, don't remember exactly which, Tom had a clip of him going over a railway that he wasn't allowed to do legally. After posting it the police came knocking and he had to edit and reupload the video removing the part where he jumped the track.

TOM, if you can see this I KNOW, I know, I know, that these missions take a lot of preparations and aren’t the easiest things to do, but PLEASE keep doing them, it only makes sense to go for Northern Ireland and Ireland next, or even any of the other Scandinavian countries, but please keep doing them, we love, and looking forward to future adventures ❤

May need to drop the camo for Northern Ireland though!
Stuff like the no roads mission was super cool aswell! Even if he has to dial it back an do some shorter missions with the same kinda vibe it would be cool.
He could do the Netherlands for an easier (?) one. I also liked the idea of crossing a country by rivers (e.g. Germany).

Hey Tom,
Just wanted to stop by and thank you for inspiring me to go on my first straight line adventure and I took your advice and filmed it and uploaded it today. Just want to thank you for all you have done for us all.
Don't beat urself up for the non risk taking and dark video footage, stuff like this is only plannable to a certain extend. Life isn't math or perfectly predictable. Especially nature herself. It was an amazing beautiful nice mission and we are extremely proud of you ❤
Whats crazy if you go back and watch Wales 1 to see how much improvement and preparedness there is now. Tom was basically just completely winging it. Now its almost a military operation. Loved this series.
i think he enjoys it more if he is a bit less prepared for the sense of adventure, but yeah, he's gone a long way.
I think almost dying in the Norway mission really changed his perspective on these missions and from that point on he started doing a lot more prep and risk minimization.
Also I think when he saw the approach Archie Fieldhouse took in their missions with an entire support crew of like 5 people, it kind of set off a lightbulb that it doesn’t NEED to be as hard as it was in the past
This is what CZcams was made for.. absolutely top tier, quality content, nothing silly, just a man surrounded by nature and catchy narration on top. Looking forward to new straight line missions but also buzzing to hopefully get some Geo Detective back soon haha
Out of curiosity I watched a video from an extremely famous and hugely subscribed/viewed YT channel about a week ago and was shocked by how bad it was. Offensively bad, in fact. Tom's channel and the missions are genuinely in the top 0.0001% of content on CZcams and are better than TV as well. Pure entertainment and the opposite of gaming the algorithm.
Too right. There's no better content out there! It's great to see Tom complete a mission but it's bitter sweet as we now have to wait for the next one.
You might like Harry Dwyer as well.
Totally agree! Tom's content is an absolute light in the current state of CZcams... however, I find the 'nothing silly' remark a little funny considering his second-head-torch farmer-to-a-flame escape plan 😆
I like the videos but what are you on about with nothing silly. For a start the whole idea is silly. I think you could define his humour as silly. Silly is why I watch the videos.
The real 'freak of nature' isn't so much storm Arwen, but the forests it knocked down
They're not native to Britain and basically destroy the landscape. If it had have been native broadleaf forest, you would have strolled through in comparison and had your gold.
Well done anyway, it's been a blast!
Some of those got Arwenised too.
Well done Tom- I started watching you shortly after the first Wales mission and I've followed every adventure since. This was definitely the pinnacle!
Tom you may not see this but thank you for doing what you do. Because of you I have changed my outlook on life. I'm a trucker and I've worked my ass off for years but next year I'm planning a trip. I'm headed to Norway and in the Spirit of how not to travel Europe I'm going to try to go from Norway to Greece in the most interesting and creative ways possible with nothing but a backpack full of Essentials a passport a gopro and a sense of adventure. I've been a follower and a supporter of yours for a long time and as I type this I'm looking up at the no roads and Wales mission posters hanging in my bedroom. Truly. Thank you for being your awesome self and spurring me on to seek adventure as well. This channel and the videos you produce (expertly btw) mean a lot to me. My life and the lives of many people would be of lesser value without them. Congratulations on the successful mission Tom. Cheers from a Norwegian Irishman living in Canada
Thank you for sharing your plans, it really does sound like your perspective on life has changed, for the better, I should add. That alone deserves recognition.
I wish you nothing but the best for your trip away. I'd call it an adventure! I'd love to see footage of it, if you feel up to filming it.
You've got Norwegian heritage, so the Norway part of your trip might feel different somehow. Perhaps.
In any case, finding your way to Greece will no doubt be difficult, but I think it's possible, and this random CZcams commenter will support you and your journey!
All the best, have fun, and most importantly... Enjoy yourself, you deserve it.
I woud advise you to also bring basic camping gear, nothing fancy just a light and small 1 person tent, a mat and a sleeping bag. Also always bring a headlamp on every kind of outdoor adventure. Bit the possiblity to spend a night literally whereever you are will be the purest form of independence you have ever experienced, I promise you that.
@BakaTaco thank you I really appreciate it. I'd still have lots of time to plan and get things sorted for exactly how things are going to go. I'm not going to go into it blind that's for sure. I'll definitely feel me and probably upload things on CZcams but like I said this is about a year from now so don't expect anything anytime soon lol.
@user-uz2in5ce5k all of that will be sorted up when the time comes. I have my old military rucksack that I'll probably be using to store everything that I'll be bringing in camping supplies are going to be up there on the list.

26:20 there is some irony there for me. Last week I was talking with a co-worker about this series and mentioned how the UK has it good with nearly 0 deadly animals and that cows were the most dangerous. The fact this line went past the most dangerous cows is hilarious.
Also another weird fact is that new zealand has very few deadly animals. This surprised me considering how close it is to Australia.
Anyways congrats Tom!
@@saoirsedeltufo7436 that's actually insane. I always thought they were maybe a couple hundred miles apart. Thanks for the information.

Amazing job Tom, Verity and Ben!
I can't express how magical and synonymous your theme tune is. It is absolutely brilliant, somehow nostalgic (since your first straight lines) and heartwarming.
I bought the album he made years ago it's pretty greaaat !
Safety takes priority over staying on the line, man! Platinum or not, we're happy to be a part of the adventure.

It brings me back to a happy period of my life. Thanks Tom!
I genuinly believe these straight line missions sit among my top 3 favourite things on the ENTIRE internet. Incredible job, absolutely delighted for you. Come to Ireland!!!
legend is an overused term, but you may well have just become one in the traditional sense.
hundreds of years from now, people may well talk of a historic figure who crossed the entire country in a straight line. some may believe it, others may consider it a myth.
that's what's called a legend.
well done sir, you are truly inspiring

He probably genuinely is the first person to do this, right? I can't tell if I'm just being stupid or not ha ha.
If someone is still doing the No Such Thing As A Fish podcast in a hundred years time, I think Tom is exactly the kind of guy they will go nuts for! Proper, authentic 100% eccentric legend.
And the lost phone will be a relic of this legend
It does sound a bit like a tall tell or legend doesn't it. 200 years from now: "Little Timmy did I ever tell you the tale about GeorgeWizard? He was a man so steadfast and determined he walked everywhere in a straight line. I tell ya he was 10ft tall if he was an inch. So strong he'd stride through fallen timbers like you or I stride through grassy fields. He leapt the River Thames in a single stride despite there being a bridge not but 15m away. "
Big up to Ben and Verity for their amazing support and unrelenting determination to get you through these missions, and crongrats on the 1st try victory :D

Phenomenal series. The original straight-line-missioner still makes the best missioning content on CZcams. Never stop dude
What an epic adventure. These adventures are the sort of thing I think even 'serious' adventure types would be a little shocked at, they are a massive challenge and you are doing things that nobody else has ever achieved. Thats something very rare these days. Much as epic trips across jungles etc sound very romantic this is the true spirit of adventure writ large.
This series has been up there with House of the Dragon and The Boys for my high anticipation each week.
I so love the 4:3 aspect ratio of Tom’s videos. On my iPad they look so much better than for instance YT video’s.
The editing and sountrack of the gorse patch part (9:42) actually made me laugh out loud. Brilliant.
One of the best ones yet. Every time you upload these missions I make an event out of watching them with snacks and all. I look forward to future outdoor adventures of any kind, good luck!
Never thought i would be so happy for a muddy, wet, and probably stinking man who i've never met before, completing a challenge i never thought anyone would be in their right mind to attempt. Your channel is an absolute diamond of content, hidden amongst the many less interesting rocks of youtube. Congratulations to you and Verity on the pregnancy too!
Do Jutland / Denmark next. I can promise you, you won't experience fallen trees like that in Denmark. But the farmers are a given!
i will second this. I'd imagine it would be pretty easy but entertaining :)

congrats man!! this was such a fun watch!! it reminded me of when i first found your channel and the first wales mission, the pure excitement that was waiting patiently for the next episodes, i loved it all!!
thanks for the great work, sending love to you, verity and the baby from brazil!!!!
ps: loved the tame impala reference at 52:38 !!!!
I was forced to miss the video's release and was able to watch it only now, a week later.
It's really nice to see that most of the comments were written in the first 2 days after the video was released - we were all very cheering for you and the success of your great adventure.
Congratulations on the successful completion of the mission!
I've been watching you since the first mission and man I can't say how good it feels to watch these videos. It gives me a break from my life and I'm able to celebrate with you on your highs, and feel like I'm there for your lows. I admire your courage and have the upmost respect for you.
Congratulations on the baby as well even though I'm guessing he or she hasn't been born yet.
You mentioned tweaking the line to make it silver. I don't see that as controversial. Your mission is to cross the country in a straight line. You used that line as a guide. So it would make sense that in the end, you can say that's the line you crossed it with. So, 100% you got silver. Good on ya, buddy. Sending love from Canada. All the best.
Excellent stuff! I can't wait for the next one "I Crossed England In A Straight Line, Wearing a Blindfold"!
Naked!
What an amazing feat Tom and I cant push my appreciation enough. As a huge fan these videos mean more than u could know!
Love from Sweden
Love the tweaking the line idea, I've thought about it on every straight line mission I watched.
Amazing team work. The funniest part for me is seeing how much Tom's beard has grown throughout this mission.
England Win, Lewis Wins, Tom Wins.
What a weekend!!
The fall at the end was brilliantly edited. Well done on the whole thing man!
If I can guess as to the silver "line change" at the end - since your total deviation was less than 100m, by slightly adjusting the line by a few feet you can get it in "compliance" with a silver finish. I think that's an intellectually honest silver, as there's nothing that makes your chosen starting line more notable than the one 10 meters to the side of it.
Well done, Tom! That was amazing! Once again, I enjoyed every minute of it. It might be a bronze run, but your storytelling is still platinum. You can be really proud of yourself and your responsible decisions in the forests. Wishing you all the best for this new episode in your life!
What an absolutely epic achievement, this series has been fantastic from start to finish.
Looking forward to seeing what the future brings, even if it'll be a little smaller scale.
I'm honestly so happy for you. Had a tear in my eye at the end.
Absolutely fantastic work mate. ❤
Absolutely BRILLIANT! Congratulations Tom, and of course Verity and Ben. What an achievement, bronze or not, it's incredible. Can't wait to see what you do next, but also best of luck with the adventure of parenthood! You and Verity are going to be fantastic parents.
All I can say is congrats for tackling and succeeding in this crazy adventure ! This was thrilling, funny, sometimes nerve-wracking, and truly enjoyable. Shoutout to Verity and Ben for the support they provided. Looking forward to whatever you're cooking up next !
