      I would suggest getting the second "book" (it's much shorter), Dune Messiah. It completes the generational story of Paul Atreides, before the next generation takes over in Children of Dune. The first four books are really good, IMO. Dune itself is my favorite book of all time. I've read it over 20 times and was still seeing new things I'd missed on the 15th read. Great "bang for your buck." (Or maybe I just suck at comprehension) ;)

    Dune & Dune: Part Two are probably my two favorite movies of all time. Seeing Dune in 2021 in theaters for the first time changed the way I viewed movies. I have never seen visuals or heard sound in a movie that impressive, it felt like how people in 1977 probably felt seeing Star Wars for the first time. And Part Two is even better than part one which is saying A LOT. We finally have a new GOAT'd franchise for this decade.

Something I discovered after watching this movie and reading the books is that there was an AI takeover and so that's why it's in the future but instead of expanding AI capabilities, they focused on expanding the human brain. **WARNING PART TWO ENDING SPOILERS BELOW**
      My favorite is how during the duel between Paul and Feyd, Paul uses both the lesson from Gurney and the Gom Jabbar to win. The idea behind the Gom Jabbar test is that an animal caught in a trap may gnaw off their leg to get away, while a human would endure the pain while waiting to draw in whoever set the trap and kill them.
      Paul intentionally takes a couple of non-lethal hits from Feyd to draw him in, get him overconfident. Feyd loves pain, both receiving and inflicting it, so he falls for it completely. He gets in close, and Paul finishes him off with a move very similar to what Gurney used on him during their sparring in part one.
      It's also possible that the reason it worked is that Feyd never understood the lesson of the Gom Jabbar, due to his love for and fixation on pain (as Lady Fenring said after testing him).

      Yeah, the banquet is great, but it sadly wouldn't have made much sense to have it in the movie. The main purpose of it is worldbuilding, and a movie has very limited time, so the focus needs to be on the characters and plot.
      Plus, it would've messed up pacing, and confused movie-onlies since it introduces several characters who aren't really relevant in the first novel.

One of the reasons that he dealt so much with forecasting the future and prophecy, is he thought the notion of the future as a fixed event on the timeline was in error. This is not a thing, unless you consider anything from Brian Herbert to be cannon. The narratives are much simpler, the philosophy is almost completely gone, outside of a thin facade of something more thought provoking than the statement "water is wet". I personally tried very hard to like them and failed. Until I see the so-called notes left behind by his father (which they will never show) I refuse to believe there is even a shred of Frank Herberts ideas in those cash grab pamphlets Brian Herbert wants people to call books.
      EDIT: I didn't bother looking ahead of time, but people seem to have already said this in not so many words. Point still stands, read the BH books at your own peril.

    • @Bottlekap
      @Bottlekap Před 4 měsíci +1

      @@donny1960 to be honest I didn't care for her portrayal either. Though I don't think that was her fault as much as the writing. I can understand creating a counterpoint to the messiah narrative, it grounds the story a bit more and come across more real (even though 20k years into the future shouldn't be beholden to us, this unrelatability in the level of fanaticism from even those close to Paul has always been a point of scrutiny among readers, past and present). I just think they took it a bit too far with her character, almost to the point of damaging some plot threads so much that Dune Messiah will likely be dramatically different from the book.
      That being said I loved parts 1 and 2, and will reserve judgement on Messiah until I've actually seen it. Also, I may or may not be a bit salty that Thufir was just gone. Even as a child his final scene with Paul and his relief and realization about Jessica made me cry, and I never cry.

    • @donny1960
      @donny1960 Před 4 měsíci +1

      @@Bottlekap I think having two lovers reunite. Putting their differences aside. Will make Dune Messiah get right back on track. Denis is a huge fan of Dune. He will not alter it so completely like what is being suggested. Putting the doubts of the Fremen into Chani is pure genius. It started with Jamis and was an undertone in the second third of the book. But by making Chani the "spokesperson" of that doubt, makes their reconciliation all the more important. They HAVE to love each other and be together. There is no rest of Dune without that happening. As for Thufir. Both I and Denis agree. He has stated that cutting Thufir was hardest thing he did in making Dune Part 2.
