It's always nice to see the old school way of dropping axles and doing springs when it's just so easy nowadays one can just order it up and a few days have it sitting at the doorstep but what's the fun in that LOL a little heat a little patience and you get the same result that somebody wants to charge a fortune for audio sounds great another awesome video that cherry red still looking good on them rims and white walls

They’re pretty cool! I was a little overwhelmed by them at first, and it was quite a learning curve to get them to work with the iPhone, but now that we’ve figured them out they’re pretty great!

Allways Good to pickup those tempering skills. Suspension,Steering,Axles,Gears,Bolts ect. Are all susceptible!
I check by getting them to ring a tone, specially important bolts.
On Utube people with less skill than youself can go wrong real fast.
I was fortunate learnt along side old guys who had learnt from old guys and they knew.

After you do your reverse, the second leaf needs to fit so it lays flat and touches the entire length of the first leaf, that one needed more bending.

Happy Sunday morning Lee and Shannon ! Watched as a 3 part series as time permitted and was so glad to see how well you showed and explained what you were doing . Once the weather changes more and I'm stuck inside for the winter I can see the value of getting to watch as you work along and I'm waiting for spring . The process on the 32 in the ground looks good. And a square body Chevy pickup.

Hello Lee. Thanks for showing these processes. Nothing here that wasn't being done 50, 60 or even 70 years ago. Proper old school stuff. I have a similar press and made some mods to it. I did show it in a video some time ago. But one thing I did is something that you could do very easily. I bought some very cheap little "vise grips" They are very small and very cheap. I have one pair clipped onto the release on the press and the other pair clipped onto the release on the engine hoist. They work great and especially on that spring job would have been a great benefit to you. Ok enough rambling from me, take care, Mart in England.

Being drop forged at birth, heat n pressure and form makes these suspension / steering components ring true with the right tensile strength. Soooo reheating without re-tempering, 100mph ummm?
Simple to Do and no one gets hurt!
People have been dropping axles in this fashion for over 70 years and going well over 100mph at dry lakes and drag strips with them. I’m not the slightest bit concerned or worried about it.

Like the way that jig keeps the original kingpin orientation, while the drop is in progress. Audio is great , but the music is

Good stuff again! That steering shock update was done this car when you bought it? Friend of mine did it to his model A pick up few yrs ago. If i remember right, he used Jeep steering shock in that project. And the audio is great!
Yea, this one is from So-Cal and it was on the car when I bought it. Probably won’t be reusing it.

love your stuff just a suggestion if you weld a 1/4 x 3'' boil to the screw release on your bottle jack it will be much easier and quicker to use .from melbourne victoria australia cheers .

Wow I didn't know they could drop the I beam two inches, I wonder if I could do mine on the 1962 ford eco, possibly. Your audio sounded crisp mostly but when it's close to your mouth it's over modulated. Especially when the heat is on, nudge nudge wink wink. Great Job.
The jig I’m using won’t work for your econoline axle, but the same theory will work if you built your own jig.
Nostalgia Sids in Oklahoma can drop any of the axles in pickups and cars from 1970 back and he is a real nice helpful man.
It looks like this method would also narrow axle.would it narrow equally side to side.the axle would need to be kept locked from side to side movement to keep axle width.i allow my axles to narrow 1 inch per side .

Awesome video Lee , I’ve often wondered if heating the axle as you did would weaken it as well as the other components ? .
As long as you let it cool down naturally, it’s perfectly fine. The only time strength is compromised is if you cook it with water.
These original ford components are all forged steel.
The foraged steel the axle and spindles are made of is of very good quality as well. Tough components. Henry did us right on that stuff.
Hey Lee great program. Hey do you have by chance any measurements and dimensions for the jig for dropping axel ? Most I’ve seen seem to be a big production and the one you used seems to be quite simple. I was also wondering if the spindle when it’s mounted in that jig is perpendicular to the bottom bracket or is there an angle set on that? Any info would be great. Thanks Greg in Colorado
The spindle is at 7°, and the height is enough that a 20 ton jack will fit underneath.

Wondering if the second leaf touching the reversed spring eyes could create a bind? Maybe a slight grinding on each end?
Yea it probably will. I had to do that on my 47
Great video !! 👍 Does dropping the axle that way change the track width of the front end ? Not sure how it would actually matter if it changed it a little but was just curious.
It does narrow the track width a bit, but it’s not a bad thing as is it usually centers the tire with the crown of the fender.

If you guys are not like the states where permission to build isn't required you guys are so lucky not needing prior permission to do the build and any modifications from the transport authorities and then once the work is done no engineering inspections or tests required.
Every province in Canada has different regulations, but most of them require an inspection at an approved inspection facility before the car can be licensed for road use. Modifications are allowed if they fit within the guidelines. For example with a deflated tire, no part of the car can be lower than 2” off the ground. Exhaust systems cannot exceed 95 decibels. Chassis and engine modifications are often considered “safety upgrades”.
Once the car is inspected and passes, obviously there is nothing stopping the owner from doing more modifications, however if a cop is having a bad day, they can definitely pull you over and issue a mandatory inspection. When this happens the car has to be reinspected and cannot be licensed again until it passes.
The grey area with hot rods, is most inspectors are not familiar enough with 90 year old cars to know what’s stock and what’s modified and thankfully most use common sense and judgement to decide what’s safe for the road and what is not.
Is there an advanage to spliting the wishbone?
No. The only reason for splitting the wishbones is if you need clearance for a larger engine/transmission.
The actual suspension theory of split wishbones doesn’t work on paper (they bind up) but much like most hot rod applications, in the real world it does work.
You could find more peaceful music,not into the rage.
