Birding Uganda - Shoebill in Mabamba Swamp

- In January 2022, we traveled to Uganda for a birding and wildlife trip. The Shoebill was our #1 target and it did not disappoint.

This is also my favorite bird. Wish I could be near one and bow to him.
I would also bow to him and clap my hands so he'll accept me!
Those eyes... They really locked onto the people intruding in his space! He looks so fierce.

This is an experience of a lifetime ! I think the Shoebill deserves a regal name to match it's magnificence. It feels like you have traveled back in time. What a wondrous Creature ! Every time I see them I think how amazing it would have been to see The DoDo bird. But alas , over-harvesting of the birds, combined with habitat loss and a losing competition with the newly introduced animals, was too much for the dodos to survive. The last dodo was killed in 1681, and the species was lost forever to extinction. Protecting all of God's creatures are our duty and I am thrilled the Shoebill is getting that protection ! I once saw a bird that I have not been able to identify- it may be this one! But the bird was perched on top of a power tower- which had become grand central station for many migratory & predatory & variety of birds… we used to feed them all scraps, ect- but this bird was unique- with wings spread wide for over I bet an hour. Yet it made a horrible sounding noise. A lot like pre historic. I wonder
PS I did not hear the gun sound but more like a deep horrifying screeching kinda

It's a dinosaur like bird but terrifying
The way these birds raise their young offends me, but hey I guess prehistoric habits die hard. And to be fair they dont really mess with man. And they eat baby crocs, they have my respect for that.
