- Face to face with the most iconic bird of Uganda: the shoebill. The Mabamba swamp in Lake Victoria near Entebbe is an amazing place for birding and is one of the most famous locations to track this astonishing bird. The swamp is home to a population of 12 shoebills and it took some effort for our guide and the boat driver to find one of these wonderful birds in the swamp as the papyrus surrounding the channels is very tall. Finally, we were rewarded with a close encounter with this amazing bird.
Welcome to our birding and wildlife safari to Uganda in August 2019. We stayed two nights at the wonderful “The Boma” hotel in Entebbe. Our first destination was the Mabamba swamp where we had our very first encounter with the majestic shoebill and other water birds. The area of Entebbe offers many different species of birds and was an ideal start of our birding trip around Uganda. Immediately upon arrival, we spotted great blue turacos and black-and-white-casqued hornbills.
For animal identification, please refer to the video subtitle or to the species list below.
With best regards,
Sandra and Markus

Ugandans we are blessed 🎉🎉
Top of my bucket list to see one of these beautiful majestic birds, in their natural habitat❤
...what a wonderfull world
Majestic is the best description of this beautiful specie that mankind have somehow pushed to the brink of extinction.
Amazing, a lovely video, it’s my most wanted bird, and this year I’ll be off to Mabamba Swamp, I’ll be going to see the Gorillas too, thanks to my late aunt Barbara.
Thank you very much for your kind comment, appreciate it very much! So glad that you enjoy watching our videos. We went to Bwindi for two consecutive gorilla trakkings, see our video here: czcams.com/video/JfRNsRg68U4/video.html
Wishing you all the best and best regards, Markus
I only need to walk by the canal here where I live in Ireland to see the likes of herons, egrets, ducks, swans and sometimes cormorants. But the more exotic hornbills and shoebills and such would be worth the journey to Uganda to see. Wonderful video.
Thank you very much for your kind comment, appreciate it very much! Wishing you all the best and best regards, Markus
Was für eine atemberaubende Natur! ❤
All of these birds are so beautiful. The shoebill is fascinating . Hopefully Uganda and any other nations where the shoebill might be found are protecting them.
Dear catalot, thank you very much for your kind comment, appreciate it very much. Best regards, Markus
i believe shoebills are actually protected in uganda with strict laws as they used to be hunted
this bird is beautiful. she must be saved. it must be protected

Dear Geoff, thank you very much for your wonderful comment, appreciate it very much! So glad to hear that you had a wonderful experience at Mabamba. Wishing you all the best and best regard, Markus
Grossartige Vogel-Dokumentation!
Prehistoric bird
Thank you for beautiful video! Someday, I want to go to Mabamba Swamp and meet shoebills and kingfishers.

Excellent, lovely presentation thanks 👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you very much for your kind comment, appreciate it very much! Wishing you all the best and best regards, Markus
Never mind the faces that Shoebill is making. He is trying to freak us out. Really, he has been doing exceptionally well at it, lately.
Thank for filming this video.
Amazing
Vielen herzlichen Dank Walter!
Nice video, its so peaceful navigating that pantanal and those birds with rare bills, but the shoebill its King between them!
Dear J.C. Rios, thank you very much for your kind comment, appreciate it very much! So glad you find that bird as fascinating as we do. With best regards, Markus
The pantanal is in South America. I believe this video is in Uganda, Africa. I think!
I love the rough feathers on its head.
Dear Elizabeth, thank you very much for your kind comment, appreciate it very much. Best regards, Markus
I neeeeed!!! This bird and need to populate them back to the once high kingdom they were

Beautiful video. We are going to be in Entebbe next March and would love to try and see the Shoebill. Did you use a local tour guide for this trip to see the Shoebill?
Thank you very much for your kind comment, appreciate it very much. So glad you enjoy watching our videos. Our entire Uganda trip was arranged and booked by our travel agency, including all safari activities. So we did not have to arrange anything ourselves upon arrival. Wishing you all the best and best regards, Markus

How long has the Shoebil Storke been around?
Dear Pam, thank you for your kind comment. We followed it for about 90 Minutes to different locations in the swamp. Sometimes the boat had to be pushed into shallower water to get closer to it. With best regards, Markus
Hoi Markus
Such a beautifully done video! What areas did you see the hornbill and turaco at? I will be visiting he Mabamba Swamp and would like to see the other species if it is near that area. Thank you!
Dear danedigitl, thank you so much for your wonderful comment, appreciate it very much. Most of the other birds were on the way from Entebbe center to the boat at Mabamba swap seen from the road itself (our guide simply stopped the car when he saw a bird near the road, you can see us walking on the road in the video). The birds in the garden at the end were filmed in our hotel "The Boma". With best regards, Markus
@@SandraMarkusTrachsel What wider lens did you use for the shots of the boat cruising through the water? Thanks!

İs Theresa a clear view of these birde with go pro???
Thank you very much for your comment. Unfortunately a GoPro is not sufficiant for birding. Yes, you can capture the bird, but it will not reveal any details. We use very big telephoto lenses to get a good closeup view of the bird. You might be lucky and it is right in front of your boat, but mostely you will only see it from a far distance. With best regards, Markus

Filmed in their home not in a wee artificial cage entertaining noisy zoo goers.
Great video except for the music.
