What a team this Liverpool side was.
Barnes, Rush and Beardsley were unstoppable.
The midfield were a bit more prosaic, but McMahan and Houghton could certainly play.
The defense after Hansen got injured started to crumble, though.
Didn't matter, so long as the boys upfront kept doing the business. Mad scores, brilliant games, great football.
Massive respect for John Barnes putting up with the monkey chants, and playing football from the gods in response. Man was the best in the world at times.

What a team. I watched this live with my brother. He'd started his 1st year studying medicine at uni and I was in my 1st year at grammar school. Liverpool were unstoppable but instead of Hysen, I would have used Venison and if Leeds hadn't purchased him, Kenny could have gone for Gary McAllister from Leicester City or some other great playmaker.

The team hasn't changed a great deal since the 87-88 season. They've won the league twice, probably would have won it this season if Dalglish hadn't left, instead runners-up for the second time, as well as one FA Cup. But 4 years is a long time and you do think there needed to be more refreshment. When you're on top, keep smashing them. Another dynamic attacker maybe for the right side or something more tigerish or crafty in the middle. Not that I didn't love our Ronnie.

    • @waz3128

Kenny kept buying new sub par strikers to replace Beardsley for some odd reason. If anything I think our midfield needed strengthening with Mcmahan and Whelan getting on in years and becoming more and more injury prone. Someone like Gary Mac. Kenny also should have bought Gazza when he had the chance

He did the same to me when Man utd got their revenge against us in the rumbelows league cup.. Lol..
