    I think you should have made cuts with the wire all of the way to the back to see if they broke. It’s way to tedious to have to position the wire in a precise way to avoid damage.

      I was hoping he would do that too. Their wire cutters, not a precision instrument. It's absurd, annoying, and would add time to what you're working on. I can't think of one multitool or set of wire cutters I have were I have to take the time and be careful were I put the wire like is needed with this new design. Something else has to be at play.

    I know you aren't asking me specifically, but here is my opinion. You can get a tool that works, or, for almost 8 times the cost, get a tool that does not work. This issue is not just the hard wire cutters; it is the pliers, the scissors, the awl, the PE blade, the wire stripper, the crimper, etc.
    The Leatherman has a lower value than a knockoff at only 1/8th the cost.
    The cutters either work or they don't. I don't put up with sub-par quality from any tool. Why should I have a different attitude toward Leatherman? Putting the wire in the cutters and clamping down is the correct way--regardless of any positioning lie/excuse Leatherman tells you. If their tool fails basic use--well, that really says that their design/workmanship/quality is sub-par. Leatherman should be called out of this, every time, and held to account, every time. If they won't make quality products on their own, either you as a customee can force them to correct their eggregious errors, or you can be one of those people who settles for a low-quality product. It sounds as if you already made your choice.
    Leatherman does not care about their customers. They sell you high-priced junk, and laugh at you all the way to the bank.
    Fools and their money are easily parted.

    Back again with my Apples to Leathermans (leathermen?) comparisons:
    With the iphone 4, the positioning of the antenna bands around the frame meant that signal would be completely blocked if you held the device in your typical smartphone grip position.
    Apple's response: You're holding it wrong.

    I always wanted the cutters from EOD's on my Surges. After the Arcgate i noticed that my newest Surge came with that bad cutters so i ordered 2 pairs from amazon italy, the only place that sale those in Europe. It toke me 3 minutes to modify each cutter and im very happy now. It still can cut 2mm hardwire (that thing is as popular as duct tape in my country). For more serious jobs i rely on a Knipex Cobolt. In fact Surge+CoboltS+Cobra150 is equal to the price of the Arc here in Romania. 300 euros (or dollars).

    Honestly I'm still one the first set of cutters on my Arc an was sweating bullets when I had to use them at work to cut baler wire an it's like 14 gauge I guess not as thick as your coat hanger but still pretty damn strong,an they cut right through with no problem an I didn't slide wire all the to the rear of my cutters but in its designated area designed for it like my surge an no breaking or rolling so far,just saying,yeah it sucks to stop to look to makes wire is where it's supposed to beforehand cutting,but in the long end keeps from damaging your tool an gets the job done an also knowing how to use your tool properly an it's limitations,you just have to be smart about things,yes I agree with you I don't like the gap in the cutter's,even in my surge,I may look elsewhere later on when time to replace them for the longer cutters an see that eliminates the gap that's known now,ty for sharing your video,an yes I'm glad Leatherman did their heat treatment issue fixed,i got my Arc back second week of December a few days after my birthday an I just absolutely love it.

  • @form4li7y
    @form4li7y Před 5 měsíci +3

    Thanks for making this follow up. To me, this isn't a real fix. You still have to baby it by making sure you don't land the wire in that gap. Any tool above $50 that has to be pampered isn't worth the cost. ESPECIALLY when knock off's can perform like the legit tool should. I can't see this move as anything other than Leatherman trying to satiate those calling them out while keeping the new design for whatever reason they originally wanted it. Until they go back to the old design and be open about the issue I can't trust them.

    • @rook9714
      @rook9714 Před 5 měsíci

      IME if you put it in the notch it doesn't break, just doesn't cut. My suspicion is the breaking was a heat treat issue on a batch, just combined with the changed cutting position that confused people

  • @rook9714
    @rook9714 Před 5 měsíci +1

    As for indexing the wire - i dont have to look or be super intentional now i have the muscle memory for it - i partially close the pliers around the wire and then back them out and the wire indexes itself against the top of the notch. Still less convenient than seating at the bottom, but a non-issue for me now.
    I do wonder if there was some other reason they changed them (tho ofc leatherman is always obnoxiously opaque on this stuff) - maybe to solve binding issues ive heard some people got after cutting wire on the old style cutters with the wire pressed down into the joint?

    Good video! As I understand it, with these new cutters, we need to "eyeball" what we are going to cut before we cut it? So we have to be careful to place the wire above the gap to avoid messing up the cutters? Wow....& these are the cutters meant for a vast majority of L's tools....wow again, just nuts...I took out my Surge & I have the "old" cutters as the "gap" is barely negligible...i.e., they are almost all the way to the bottom....thanks for showing the difference...the "gap" in mine is a tad bigger than a hole a pin makes...
