    Yep. The best system out there. I like it so much I now have one of each permanently set up. Mainly use them to re establish the angles and for restoring blades/ chisels. For folk just starting out this is one of the few items I advise spending money on.

    I bought the Veritas 2 system last week and find it very easy and accurate to use, as per your excellent video. Very happy with it!

    I just purchased the set. Thanks for the video. My only complaint so far is the instruction manual. It is poor, poor, poor. But the honing guide looks firm and well made. Can't wait to try it.

      Yes, the instruction manual isn't great but the guide is well made and i think it's great.

      Too funny, I didn’t even read the instructions. I know, typical male. It’s colour coded and very easy to use. I’ve heard complaints about it being too fiddly a set. Well yes, a bit, but for a troglodyte like me with arthritis and tendonitis it’s worth every penny of my pension to get such incredible precision and more importantly, accurate repeatability especially on secondary bevels. Great review.

      @@fogsmart thanks for adding your take on the veritas jig, much appreciated

    Thank you for the review. I bought one of the cheap guides and it is ok for plane blades but leaves a lot to be desired for chisels because of the design. I have no desire to build another jig for blade angles etc so this looks like a good option.

      My pleasure, I'm glad you appreciated the review. It's also interesting to see what prices it costs else where around the world so thank you for that.

    Looks absolutely superior to my offbrand jig!

    Great video! Ironically I was just looking at this one today at my local woodcraft, but I didn't end up getting it, probably should have

      Yea don't do what I did and try to cheap-skate it. The one I have is some stanley copy and apparently, my chisels are now all skewed.

      Adrian. I did the same thing at first, and all of my blades were skewed too. So i know the feeling

    Can you clamp and hold their narrow plane blades that are stepped narrow in the back and thicker in front?

  • @doughsnakes
    @doughsnakes Před 10 měsíci +1

    I needs one. I currently have a budget honing guide and it works ok for plane blades, but it is terrible for narrow chisels

    • @AussieWoodshed
      @AussieWoodshed  Před 10 měsíci +1

      That is the main reason i ended up getting the Veritas deluxe guide set in the first place.

    Mine skews consistently to the left side of the bevel. This is a problem others have reported. Check for this immediately! Return the unit if yours does this. There is something off about the angle clamp/body interface of the roller itself.

    • @AussieWoodshed
      @AussieWoodshed  Před 2 lety

      I was unaware of this, thanks for letting everyone know.

      I purchased mine only to find the secondary bevel was always skewed. Contacted Veritas directly and they said I have a faulty (mis aligned) roller assembly from factory. I’m guessing there must of been a bad batch seeing as the number of others having the same issue. I’m now in the process of chasing down a replacement, Veritas offered to send one out but upon realising I live outside the US they said to contact where I bought it from so 🤞

      @Alexander-dt8sk Před 7 měsíci

      Thanks for that update. I will recontact Veritas to see if I can't get a replacement. They blew me off last time saying that the skew was no big deal and that the chisel would still work just fine. It's turned into a very expensive paperweight since. d@@woodcraft_cz

    Thanks for this. I have this jig and like it very much. You explained it's function very well. Just curious...what grits do you like to use on your sharpening stones?
    Ceramic or diamond plate?

    • @AussieWoodshed
      @AussieWoodshed  Před 2 lety

      My pleasure. Thanks for the feedback I'm glad you liked the video. 400, 800, 1200 Grits are what i usually use and then a strop. I have water stones and diamond stone sets of the above grits. I have never used ceramic stones so i cant comment on them. czcams.com/video/c6pLcYVmqz8/video.html this video i posted last week goes through my usual sharpening process.

    I've had the MK II for several years and about a year in the jaws began to fail to hold the chisel square resulting in skewed edges and bevels. Initially the problem began with narrow chisels and now it pretty much can't hold anything I put in it. The chisel or blade will lift off the rear cross support and then it skews. Having to reset the blade mid sharp makes it impossible. I should have acted immediately and contacted Veritas but the problem was intermittent and I held off. My mistake. Buyer beware.

    In reality, the original m2 jig should have catered for small width chisels and blades/cutters? Seems like a marketing/sales ploy?
