It blows my mind that 1989 was the first time Batman had a grappling hook gun, as opposed to just a rope on a Batarang. It's become so iconic to Batman that I can't really imagine him not having it.

I thought surely this can't be true, so I did a bit of looking into it and yep! 100% true. There are other devices, but not quite THIS device in the comics. Trippy! Apparently Batman Issue 458 was the first one in the comics in 1991.

    • @ObsessiveGeek
      @ObsessiveGeek Před rokem +8

@ajosepi1976 You know then this isn't true, the first instance of the grapple gun was in Justice League of America #196 (1981), however, the 89 movie included the feature of the motorised-pully system that is now standard in every incarnation of the grapple gun used by Batman.

You'll rarely find people, who are related by blood, be able to maintain the level headed distance between work and familiar. And i speak this from experience, having apprenticed under my father before getting my Uni diploma. Those, were some hard years, especially since we were always in the counter zone, one with another.

It bothers me how many people say they disliked each other, or Adam somehow disrespects Jamie, because they weren't off-screen friends.
Every time I've see Adam talk about Jamie it seems he's absolutely GUSHING over him singing praises of his ingenuity, knowledge, and/or prowess. Case in point, this video about a Batman prop has Adam spending ~4 minutes out of the total 8:36 time talking about Jamie. Adam respects the hell out of Jamie, and it shows... But that doesn't mean they need to be friends or that their personalities would even permit them to be friends (some people you just can't mesh with). However, their professionalism and (hopefully mutual) respect allowed them to overcome any personal incompatibilities and have what seems to be one of the most AMAZING work relationships.

So, there is one more thing about this story with Jamie that Adam has left out, and which I think will help the story make more sense.
If I recall correctly, Jamie had strapped the motor to his right arm, so he couldn't just let go of the device when he got to the top. He was stuck. And since he had forgotten to put a reverse gear into the tool, that meant he didn't really have any other choice but to cut the cord. That's why he had to pull up so hard in order to reach the cord with his left hand, and why he ended up accidentally bopping himself in the face with his right hand.

Apparently some of the "lights" used on the panels for the original ToS bridge were just gumdrops or something lit from behind. Not sure if that's internet rumour or actual fact.
But its quite often true that props are frequently made "just good enough" to look good on television or in a movie. Hero props of course have better detail and quality than background props. I've been to the Star Trek on tour when it was in Detroit once upon a time, and how props look in person versus how they appear on screen is surprising.
I was able to walk through pieces of the Star Trek: TNG sets they had on display, along with some filming models and props, and they looked quite different than you would expect.

Plus the fact that props, usually have a whole arsenal of companions.
Close up version, poster/cover version, functional version, stunt version, display version, dummy version ect.
And the "one specific scene" you remember the most, might not even be the replica that they've made.
And even if they made it exactly to that scene, the experience of the prop might be disappointing,
cause it's not a real thing, never has been and they've done the best they can to replicate something that is so vague, that in order to get the best replica,
might simply have been a vacuume form from the original buck and some crude paint. And yes, that would be disappointing to most people, but it's still "Screen accurate".
    It's a business i do not envy working in 😂 😂
However, that right there is beautifully executed replica for small scale production.
A fine balance of Display worthy, but also tactile and semi-functional so you can fumble around,
play with it and have multiple display options with it, which isn't an easy thing to do on a replica.
So hats off to those guys, brilliant work.

I totally understand with the time aspect, though. I sunk a lot of time into far less ambitious cosplays years ago before my health took a surgery for the worse.

    Adam,
I don't believe that it should be weathered. Batman has the money and the attention to detail that if any piece of his gear gets damaged at all. It gets immediately repaired or replaced once he has returned to the bat cave. Any damage to his gear/costume would show a weakness to his enemies.

I have always wondered how Keaton’s utility belt functioned and how it was able to hold his gadgets!?! That’s what I want explained to me. Because it’s always fascinated me and my imagination as a kid growing up.

Adam, you should take a trip up to Canada to visit Hacksmith Industries. I think you'd love that place, but it would make for good content too.
