    COLOR
So I LOVE wearing colors, I know for some of you this isn’t news but it’s a thing.
For as long as I can remember I’ve never been afraid of incorporating color into my wardrobe.
Be it red, pink, magenta or chartreuse having a wardrobe that embraces a wide spectrum of colors brings me true sartorial satisfaction. In fact, true story, I only own one full black suit. People always ask me why I wear so many colors and patterns and the answer is simply, because it makes me happy! When I see a kelly green shirt or a pair of floral trousers, I get excited about the possibilities. I think many people are intimidated when it come to color for number of reasons. They don’t know how to wear colors because they’ve never tried, so their afraid to get it wrong. They don’t know how to slowly incorporate color into their existing wardrobe so it will be organic. They are afraid of what other people will think.
I think it’s important to acknowledge that all of these are fears and that once you recognize your fears it’s often easier to overcome them. That recognition paired with education and a strong detailed style inspiration can put you on the path overcoming your fears. re importantly what colors you like. Following that start small by adding color in accessories and subtle clothing details. Flecks of a color in pocket squares and ties. touches of color in shoes or socks. The more comfortable you are with the effect of color in your wardrobe, the more you’ll be able to start adding.

I look good in what's traditionaly fall colors such as :burgundy, royal blues and purples, navy and dusty rose. I used to care about what other people think now don't give a F if people don't like color I wear it now especially after taking color theory class. Color theory class really helped me make smart color purchases . I wish at work I could wear all black because I work with a lot of colors . I'm digging that bright blue and yellow on you Dandy 😍 omg I wish I had more melamine often to pull off bright colors !

I used to have trouble color matching when I made jewelry. The best advice I ever got was, "Do you like it?" A lot of us don't trust ourselves to match colors well but at the same time we all have opinions. Before you get dressed lay out an outfit. Do you like it? If you're not sure maybe try again. If it really grabs you then you know you're onto something. Trust your own likes and dislikes. You know more than you think you do.

Love the new set, that's a gorgeous color. You are completely correct that a lot of people, and I've very much noticed this with men, at least in the South, seem deeply afraid of being judged for wearing anything that could be considered "loud". I've always been attracted to wearing color, but you're totally right in that it does require some self-education as to what can go with what without looking garish. That red coat/pink shirt with the white collar/vest combo was PhD level color combination. The others were beautiful, and I would wear that mint green/brown ensemble in a heartbeat, but that red jacket combo was a fantastic way to show that you can create a complex combination and pull it off, as long as you have an appreciation not only for color theory, but also for how specific colors can play off your skin tone. I love yellows and golds, but if they're right up against me I look ill, so I have to find other ways to incorporating them, like pocket squares or ties. And sometimes a small but bright pop of color can be a super-effective means of wearing a color without it wearing you, as you beautifully demonstrated.

    • @DandyWellington
      @DandyWellington  Před 4 lety +7

This is a great break down of something I teach in my classes. Confidence and independence from other peoples negative opinions and also how to combine colors you like in ways that suit you. With yellow and gold I would suggest burgundy and brown; maybe even wearing forest green. These colors will anchor the yellow or gold and work with your skin tone. Thank for watching!

@@DandyWellington This is going to be a touch long, lol. Thank you! I love your channel, both the music and, honestly, seeing another man seem to so effortlessly kill it both sonically and in terms of fashion. I love the entire vintage/historical costume community (I found you by way of Bernadette Banner), but I've had a harder time finding other guys I can relate to in this arena, so I deeply appreciate all the inspiration and advice! I like to consider myself pretty decent at color play, but literally every combination you just mentioned immediately clicked in my head, like "Why didn't I think of that?" And it so happens that I have both a forest green and a burgundy velvet blazer, so I can't wait to try those out! Thank you so much for the suggestion, it's such a joy to just watch you be you in such an authentic manner ad setting. Your perspective and the education you provide your audience is genuinely helping a LOT of people :)

I wear a lot of dark colors. I always have, but I recently bought a pair of bright yellow shoes on an impulse, and I love wearing them. They make me feel happy every time I see them, because they make me think of the song "Walking on Sunshine". Fast forward a few weeks, and I got a pair of bright reds. I know that they must clash with my dark colors and black fingernails, but I really like looking down and seeing colors that make me happy. I don't know if bright colors will eventually seep into the rest of my clothing, but I'm glad I decided to have fun with my shoes.

I love color and there are definitely some I will gravitate towards than others, but I often find myself more concerned with the lines and shape of a garment than with the color. If the shape looks good, chances are that I can make the color work too. Blues, greens, reds with neutral whites, creams, and blacks to make them pop and snap. My wedding gown was a great example. All white with varying texture that accentuated the lines of the gown and of me! It was medieval-vintage, if you can imagine that.

I definitely don't have this problem. If anything, I don't have enough neutrals in my wardrobe. Pretty much everything is bright shades of blue, green, purple, pink, and more recently, yellow and red, with tons of fun patterns. Floral? Galaxy print? Polka dots? Yes please. If I don't have at least one colorful piece in an outfit, I don't feel like myself.
I tend to treat blue like a neutral, because it goes with everything. My friends tease me for wearing too much blue, but it's such a pretty color. I'm starting to branch out from all cool tones all the time and add more warm tones, and I really like it.

The biggest thing to consider when dressing vintage or more colorful or basically anything "different" is to be prepared to receive more attention! And that doesn't mean people judging you - almost always I get positive attention. But you have to be prepared for random strangers to stare at you, ask you questions, etc. You can't hide when you're wearing lots of color, or a dapper hat or fluffy petticoats 😂

My favourite combo was brown with mint, but all of them look great! I like to wear all black because it's easier to "combine" (although, then when it's faded, you have different shades of black and i don't like it), but now i like to wear a lot of color incorporated in form of big patterns and prints. Since i love big flowy shirts, I'll use it as my star piece and build around it, often its just that piece, and the rest of the outfit will be black because yeah, i love black. Also, my main problem with color is that i love red, but i find it difficult to wear since i dye my hair copper/redish, and i don't want to look monochromatic, or i need something to like colorblock the upper part of the look.

Yes, I love color in my outfits!! My favorite outfit in this video was the red jacket outfit. I loved that you had a tie bar to hold the tie in place. I have no idea why that went away from the normal way to wear a tie!! Ties flying around in the wind is not a good look. I love the way you dress and always look forward to what you will be wearing in the next video! Thank you so much!

This was really fun to watch! My colors are inspired by my enamel pin collection - Starting with a solid, collared piece to show off the accessory then tying the rest of the outfit to it. (Floral skirt, bright socks, cute shoes, etc.)
Alas, finding collared, short-sleeve shirts is HARD.

I do enjoy color, but haven’t looked into combining them intentionally. You inspire me! I’m going to see what new combinations I can do with my wardrobe and figure out what clothing I’ll want to buy/make in the future.

My main colour struggle is breaking out of blue - 90% of my 50s dresses are blue and I've just gotten the fabric to make two more blue ones 😅, I love mustards/berry tones but they seldom fall into my wardrobe.

This was great. You’ve always inspired me on how to bring in more color to my wardrobe. I’d love to have you do a video on how you select the pairing of your ties and pocket squares. It’s one of those challenges my husband and I always have when putting his together. How to put color combos, patterns, styles, etc. together. Plus I’d love to just see your collection of accessories! ❤️-Reagan

Thanks you for this video! It encourages me to rethink about colors in my closet :-)
In the last months I watched so many videos about color in style and fashion... About the four season colour analysis; which color matches your skin tone (warm, cool, neutral) and hair color the best; about the effect of contrast and chroma and so on...
For me it came out I haven't done anything 'wrong' so far. I have a color palette in my wardrobe with different colors - but all with lower intensity. What I'm missing are accent colors that spark joy, give that little something to an outfit and make me feel special. I simply don't know which colors answer that purpose and complete my ecisting color pallette.

Ahhh- colour! I think in the past I feared colour the most because i am well padded naturally and feel that black and dark shades are easier for me to wear. Before that, it was so that I drew as little attention to myself. But now that I am leaning towards a history based everyday wardrobe, that has gone out the window. Colour it is!

It's not about the color that makes you possibly look bigger in some areas it's the print and cut of the garment. Seriously when I see some women wear all black and it doesn't fit it makes them look worse. I helped a lady in the thrift store look like she lost 30 pounds just by giving her some fit tips I've learned from my plus sized friends. It's all about cut, fit and drape , I make clothes fit to me not me fit into clothes. Rock those curves!

This was such a pleasure to watch! The styles were amazing and the editing on point :D Last year I found out that I am super drawn to pinks and reds and since then it has become surprisingly easy to style an outfit for me because some things just feel like myself in these colors. I think we often just have to give ourselves the permission to be out of the norm. :)

The whole fear conversation is very important… And insidious. I was convinced for years that because I am 6’ 3” and 275 pounds plus I couldn’t wear large statement pieces because I was already a large statement piece. And then I realized that I could TOTALLY wear large statement pieces BECAUSE I am already a large beautiful statement piece. I am going to command attention of any room I walk into... So I might as well wear the pretty colors to go with it.

If you had asked me, I would not have told you I was afraid to wear them. But the voices of the people who had told me before that it was not OK resonated in my head longer than I realized.
