- Shawn Porter became WBC Welterweight World Champion Saturday night as he earned a narrow unanimous decision victory over Danny Garcia in a hotly contested fight live on SHOWTIME from Barclays Center the home of BROOKLYN BOXING™, in an event presented by Premier Boxing Champions.
All three judges scored the fight in favor of Porter (116-112, 115-113, 115-113) in an electrifying fight in front of 13,058 fans at the 30th professional boxing event at Barclays Center.
Porter earned the belt that Keith Thurman, who previously defeated Porter and Garcia, was forced to vacate due to an injury.
In an anticipated title fight that was widely regarded as a 50-50 contest in boxing's deepest division, Garcia vs. Porter played out as advertised. The difference in total power punches landed throughout the 12-round battle was just five, with Garcia holding the narrow advantage.
In a matchup of accuracy vs. activity, Porter looked to outworked Garcia. He was relentless in his attack and threw 742 total punches and 544 power punches, landing 25 percent. Garcia, on the other hand, was the more precise fighter, landing the higher percentage and more meaningful punches. He connected on 46 percent of the 304 power punches he threw. Due to the contrasting styles, the three judges were only able to all agree on four rounds.
"I made a prediction and a hard one to live up to," said Porter. "I said I wasn't leaving New York without this belt and I'm not leaving New York without this belt.
"I knew he was going to be accurate. The game plan for me was to be accurate from the outside and show I could beat him without roughing him up on the ropes."
A disappointed Garcia clearly disagreed with the judges' scorecards.
"He was throwing a lot," said Garcia, who falls to 7-2 in world title fights. "I had my defense tight, so I wasn't feeling his punches. I thought I landed the clearer shots and won this fight.
"I have to sit back, relax and see what's next for me."

Andre Berto's expression said it all when they fought.
He's an interesting fighter. His style is so ugly, so sloppy, I honestly hate it, but he brings the absolute best out of his opponent EVERY time out. It's weird how a guy who fights in such a displeasing manner himself can make straight up magic when he's in there with someone else. Porter is one of my favorite fighters, and I hate him lol.

With the exception of the Spence fight, if Danny had like 20% more workrate in him, he'd probably have no losses. He just doesn't hustle when he really should.
I believed it has a lot to do with his father. His father yells at him during fights. How can you focus to your fight plans, if someone is giving you instructions by yelling, while your being hit.

Steve Willis seems the only one really working in this fight.
The filming of the fight was great, we never lost sight of the boxers feet to head profiles. Boat fighters were clearly seen during their complete and total handiwork in the ring so that the audience could judge for themselves what type of boxer each boxer was. Very good filming of the fight

Danny Garcia's biggest problem is that he waits too long. Instead of getting off a punch first, he just stares at his opponents. Waiting. And waiting. He needs to be a beast sometimes. Porter fights balls to the wall. If Danny fought that way, he would take his opponents out so much faster and with certainty.

Mine too, he's not the most skillful but he's agressive, has heart and always pushes the fight. It was always an entertaining fight when he stepped in the ring.

Danny makes or takes great accurate shots and sometimes not but he looks to be saved by the ref with the clinch too much. Shawn has the more aggressive style it's confusing to me because of Danny's accuracy

Porter throws his punches from very good angles and he is good with both fists on either toe but he has to stop at times and allow the other fighter to walk into his punches because he is stable at that point of throwing off his toes and is off balanced lunging punches. Garcia was anticipating those lunging shots so well.

Porter comes back with a double headbutt. You can't make this stuff up. It's like being in the ring with a ram. He headbutted him on the chin in combination. Lands one then follows up with another just like they drew it up.

I think that when fighters reach this level, there is a reason they don't or can't follow what their corner wants them to do. In the end, Danny was in the ring, not his corner. Danny could have pulled this fight off if he had thrown more, but then, if he did throw more, that may have caused Porter to do what he does best.
Danny has a limited punch selection and that's why he throws so few punches and since he doesn't move a lot,searching for openings, how many punches can he throw anyway? He is a left hooker, right hand counterpuncher who fights in close and has almost no ability to fight from the outside because he doesn't jab a lot or use mobility to establish range or a variety of ways of attacking an opponent.
It pays to listen to your corner/his dad cuz they see things you don't. If you're not going to listen why have them there.
