- Prizefighting returned to CBS on Saturday, June 25, 2016, with a Fight of the Year candidate as undefeated welterweight world champion Keith Thurman edged former world champion Shawn Porter in a close but unanimous decision scored 115-113 by all three ringside judges.
The 12,718 fans in attendance at Barclays Center in Brooklyn and the viewers across the U.S. watching the first primetime boxing event on CBS since Muhammed Ali-Leon Spinks in 1978 were treated to a slugfest between two of the brightest stars in boxing’s glamour division.
Thurman (27-0, 22 KOs) and Porter (26-2-1, 16 KOs) combined to throw over 1200 punches in the SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING on CBS event, presented by Premier Boxing Champions. The marquee showdown was a story of accuracy vs. activity, as Thurman landed 50 percent of his power shots, compared to 38 percent for Porter, and 44 percent of his total punches compared to just 36 percent for the challenger. While Thurman landed at a higher percentage, Porter was the busier fighter, throwing over 100 more punches across 12 rounds.
“One Time” and “Showtime” delivered as advertised, with the powerful sharpshooter buckling Porter multiple times, while the swarming and smothering Porter barreled forward to bully Thurman into the ropes. And while there were no knockdowns, the back-and-forth blockbuster never lacked action and culminated in a standing ovation in the second-highest attended boxing event in Barclays Center history.
"I want to thank Shawn Porter for a tremendous fight. He's a great warrior,” said Thurman. “Defense is the key to victory. He smothers his punches a lot and makes it difficult for the judges to score. I was able to rock him with clear, effective blows and I believe that was the difference today.
“I would give him a rematch. It was great fight. He was a great opponent. Everyone was saying would he be my toughest opponent to date. I wasn’t able to drop him but I did buckle him a few times.”
The former world champion Porter, a perennial underdog but consummate gentleman, didn’t complain about being on the losing end of his second close decision in a title bout.
“We worked hard, Keith is a great champion,” Porter said. “My dad says to keep your head up. I think I won the fight, but I'm satisfied because the competitor came out tonight.
"We need that rematch. I know the fans want that rematch. If he gives me another chance, I'm going to work hard in the ring and leave with his title."

Steve Willis for me is the best referee in the sport! He lets fighters work the inside and when the action inside gets a little messy and a lot of smothering he breaks it up. He should be reffing a lot of the big fights in my opinion!

Porter’s ability to turn people on the ropes is amazing. And how he turned him getting rocked in the 10th to him rocking Thurman before the end of the round was world class stuff. Thurman is technical when need be and hit porter with some good shots. Overall an amazing fight, a classic show of boxing!

He took a huge hit to his career by losing to Manny and didn't really correct it afterwards. He should have seen what happened as a sign that he needed to get active and get back into the groove of things, but instead has been sitting on his thumbs. Covid got in the way for sure but boxers are fighting now and he needs to join in even if it starts with smaller opponents

Porter is gonna make the fight tough that’s a given. This was really tough to score while I watched. Porter was the aggressor and really got Thurman on the ropes. But the counter punching from Thurman was key. Great fight from both guys, I wouldn’t have been made at a draw. But I always believe you gotta convincingly out fight the champ to take the belt if there’s no knock out.

In the first 10 rounds Porter was landing a lot of clean punches as well and outworked Thurman in rounds where he got caught with clean shots to make up the difference. Porter was the aggressor as well, should not have lost this fight.

For me Thurman's style was dominating most of the rounds.

It's aways the same: undefeated ('0-guys) titleholders are always given preference by the judges. In my opinion Porter should have won, as he was the more aggressive and Thurman mostly on the defensive side. Thurman vs. Errol Spence as well as Thurman vs. Pacquiao showed the actual liminations of the former.
This fight was a lot closer than I originally thought when I first watched it… a lot of these rounds could have gone either way….maybe more for porter in my opinion.

On live call, I had it 115-113 for Thurman. On muted commetary 116-112 for Porter. Porter was the busier fighter throughout most of the rounds and should have won.

Damn, this was a really good fight. I'd rank it just below Spence v Porter. Thurman's counterpunching was so good in the second half of the fight. It seems that he takes some time to start before really finding his rhythm.
Tbh though, I had that as a draw. It really came down to that last round in the end, and I could see how it could go both ways. Personally I gave it to Porter, which is why I scored it a tie. He just got really active in that last round and helped even out the score for me.
Great fight, and another reason why I love Porter. No matter who he's fighting, Thurman or Spence, he makes it rough and tough on them. I would LOVE to see him fight Bud and see how that one turns out. Who knows, he could possibly be Bud's kryptonite like Ali-Frazier. Hell, he could reasonably have a rematch with Spence or Thurman too with how close both of those fights were.
The commentator was mega-ass though for this fight like wtf was this on showtime as well because I'd like a version without that guy lol
I think Porter could beat Bud tbh, Porter was competitive with Errol the whole fight. I’d love to see Bud vs Shawn right before Bud vs Spence but knowing Top Rank it won’t be until 2030

@@tonemoney2691 Porter tried to box Ugas differently for some reason and not use his usual tactic of push and bully on the inside and electing to box. And even then Ugas wasn't doing enough for me to see him winning. He certainly had success but Ugas was too stagnant during the fight and missing shots.
No idea who Julio Diaz is so im guessing thats one of porters earlier fights in which case he was likely still growing.
Porter's going to put pressure on Bud like he's never seen before and at a level he's yet to fight at in Welter. We'll see how it goes

I had it 116 to 112 for thurman, but Porter put on a good dog fight and put on a great attitude when the scorecard was read even if it's againts him. KUDOS to that man.

I think he'll fight Ugas if WBA belt dont come back to Pacquiao next. He deserves Ugas or Spence's fight if Pacquiao fights Crawford. If Pacquiao fights Mikey Garcia, Spence vs Crawford have no reason to not happen. Ugas vs Thurman could be a great fight for both of them.

If Spence and Thurman fought, one of the two would never get a shot at Pacman ever again. That's why Spence ducking Crawford the entire time. Thurman held out for the right reason just like how Spence held out on Crawford. Now.... if they ducking each other and Pacman isn't even considering them then that's a different story. Everyone just trying to chase Pac before he retires.
Thurman still did put up a great performance in defeat.A young Thurman lost a SD to one of the most experienced boxers walking the planet today, people should give Thurman a bit more respect. Would love to see Spence finish business with Pacquaio then fight crawford next and finish up loose ends with Thurman and possibly even be the guy to fight some of the top prospects at 147 like Vergil Ortiz or Boots Ennis.
He's still one of the top tier Welterweights. Losing to the Pacman is acceptable.

If he can get a W over Porter I will be impressed. Shawn honestly has more credible wins on his record than TC does although he also has losses which you have to take into consideration. I’m glad this fight got made and can’t wait.
