  • We visit the site of the CSX A749-05 derailment that happened on May 5th, 2016, in Carlton, GA, again and inspect the damage to track, track bed, and the derailed grain car. On my way to Carlton, I catch an unknown mixed freight train. During this visit, three trains pass through the site at restricted speeds: Empty ethanol train CSX K410-04, manifest CSX Q619, and intermodal Q195. Later this day, RJ Corman - a railroad service company - put the car on trucks. When I returned to the site in the late evening, the short train with two engines and this single car, designated A949-06, waited for the clear to go to Athens, GA. [© 2016 MBMARS Productions. +Steve Allen Shooting against the sun is always very challenging, but if one can find a good angle with some object like a tree obscuring the sun but steam, mist, or vapor refracting the sunlight then one can get amazing shots. I was surprised how well it came out. I also like this setting very much.

Not 1 safety appliance left on the car not bent beyond recognition. 40,000 dollar rail car reduced to scrap, Great Job, lucky they didn’t get injured.

    Jeez....a high green right along the downed hopper...like nuthin happened....I wasn't sure if they would cross the tracks with those crawlers like that but seeing how the rails are attached unlike the spikes up here in the northeast, it isn't a problem... A grinding of the tracks later on will help out I can bet to make it look like nothing happened...

    So, with enough effort, anything is potentially repairable. While there is a lot of twisted metal on this car, i have to wonder, would it have been refurbished and returned to service? Part of me looks at it, and thinks, that can be reworked. The big factor is labor vs value. If it takes too much labor to fix too many problems, then you can tip the scales toward replacement... I guess I don't necessarily see that here, unless maybe the entire thing got twisted. Then yeah, I could see it being scrapped. Do you know what they did with this hopper?

    • @mbmars01
      @mbmars01  Před 6 lety +1

      +zippa .way As always, many factors matter. Most importantly, it's the status of the overall economy, i.e., the demand for transportation, but also power and route, of course. On the Abbeville Sub that I railfan most of the time, through trains have typically between 100 and 180 cars and 2-4 engines.

    • @mbmars01
      @mbmars01  Před 7 lety +1

      @davidbarnett9312 Před 7 lety

      I have seen these cars on tanker trains that pass through the farm on the BNSF here in central Texas, but for the life of me I cannot recall the writing on the car, but it is, at least from what I've seen, a 'special' buffer car. I'll have to keep my eyes out for the next tanker train.

      Well, you've probably seen the pictures from South and North Carolina, where this happened after the hurricane.

    No disrespect intended to CSX, but you don't run trains when there is still a carcass of a railcar to clean up

      The most important thing is to restore traffic flow, even if it's at reduced speed. The clean-up, full restoration of the rails etc. can be done later between trains, or by implementing short and temporary stoppages.

      I don't think the conditions are worse here than on most other roads in the country.

    Holy smoke. People speak of pollution caused by coal - Take a look at the stack gas from those diesels.. Wow, A lot of those cars have flat wheels. That must pound those tranks all to hell. Har do believe that those huge cars sit on the small round space and sty upright.. They surely did mess that car up moving it. Sad to see that car laying on it's side I suppose they'll scrap it. This looks like the aftermath of an auto accident with loose pieces all over the place

      You think that's bad. Watch some of the videos from Indian rail fans. Some of those Alcos are menaces to the ozone layer, and I've posted as much on some of those videos.

      No, most ethanol trains we see here on this line commute between Illinois and North and South Carolina.
