Why Planetary Gear set is really amazing?

  • This is a planetary gear set, or you can call it an epicyclic gear.
    It is used in reduction gear box and automatic transmission.
    In a single stage planetary gear set, there is sun gear in centre , sun gear is powered by input shaft, multiple planet gears are installed on the carrier.
    besides rotating itself ,these planet gears can orbit around the sun gear when ring gear is locked. Thus carrier rotates and transmits power to the output shaft.
    The biggest advantage of planetary gear set is that input and output shaft remains in coaxial form by its design and both shaft rotates at same direction. but output shaft rotates at much slower speed while delivering huge torque output .
    Lets find the gear ratio of different gear set.

    Gear mechanics is increadably facinating to me. The different types of gear boxes and infinate number of combinations is mind boggling and awesome. A mechanical science on it's own.

    All the videos I watched on this subject either assumed the carrier or ring gear to be stationary and don't explain how either or could be the case and how it can be reduced further, great vid

    quite amazing - and nicely explained. i come from an electronics background, and dont know much about gears and mechanics. in electronics - you have a transformer - which takes a certain voltage (120volts) and reduces it to another voltage (5volts) - it entails a power reduction - but how is this done mechanically!? when one thing is turning faster than another!? how do you make the faster thing turn the speed of the slower thing (imparting greater power and torque)!? 🍃 the ingenious PLANETARY GEAR is really amazing - a mechanical transformer! thank you for your excellent explication! the animation is superbe, the explanation itself is clear, and the voice is clear, and one of the more pleasant sounding english robot voices ive heard (you can tell where it lacks plural inflections).

    Assuming both planetary sets have the same ratio, (3.33:1) You MULTIPLY the reduction of both gear sets. The answer is A. (~11.1:1 final ratio)

    I understand that as the 30 teeth sun gear rotates, planet gear transfers this 30 teeth among the 70 teeth of ring gear causing 154.285 degrees rotation of the carrier. But why this turn causes additonal turn at sun gear? (video time 4:18) Is it because of the linear motion transfered to the sun gear by the carrier? Can you please explain?

      My exact question. I feel like this part can be clarified more.

    • @onerarda174
      @onerarda174 Před 11 měsíci

      @@michaelp2922 I found the answer. Planet gear's motion is a compound movement. It rotates by itself and around the sun gear. The linear velocity at the ring gear contact point must be zero. In order to compensate this, the second movement (carrier around the sun gear) must be done. This second movement causes the additonal turn because the teeth of the planet gear is in contact with sun gear.

    • @michaelp2922
      @michaelp2922 Před 11 měsíci +1

      @@onerarda174 Does that mean because the planet gear also rotates freely by itself, and it rotates in the opposite direction as the sun gear, it is still driven by the sun gear but also travelling "backwards" on the sun gear so there must be additional rotation of the sun gear to achieve the 154 degree rotation of the carrier? Sorry, this concept is really confusing to me for some reason. I think it's one of those things that I would understand much better with a real life model.

    • @onerarda174
      @onerarda174 Před 11 měsíci +1

      @@michaelp2922 What you say is true, sun gear has to catch up the carrier rotation. By the way I calculated the technical gear ratio by using angular and linear velocity formula (V=w.r). It is the complete explanation but a little bit complex. Maybe I can explain that page by sending you. How can I send you?

    a planetary has a ring that has an inner and outer diameter and the outer diameter is always bigger then the inner and the torque is the same so if you put a gear of equal size as the center on the outer diameter the gear will move more times with the torque of the ring
    and if you put a planetary of the gear that is on the outer ring the next planetary will have more torque then the first and can move the same speed making a 1 to 1 ratio increase torque , i am having only arguments with designers , maybe you can do the design to explain therei is a inner diameter and outer diameter on the ring gear and the outer will always be bigger and have the same torque as the inner
