      its power to weight ratio. You can make all the flames and noise you want with a jet but if the plane weighs far more than the total thrust...performance will be crap. I know a tornado nav who told me about airshows, they would come in and do thier part of the show...and do this vertical climbout which usually ended up in the clouds...just as well as they ran out of 'puff' whereas the Typhoons climb rate is quite insane...wonder how it compares with the old Lightning?

    @IBT98 Před 10 lety +22

    Turn rate instantaneous, is exactly 28.5º/sec, full 9g's
    That is better then the Flanker....so go Eurofighter!

    • @IanBorgessen
      @IanBorgessen Před 9 lety

      I know nowadays ITR is considered more improtant but, what about its STR?

    • @IBT98
      @IBT98 Před 9 lety +3

      Boris D My god, ITR you can only sustain for like 150 to 180º's
      STR is needed because it's energy performance
      and if your in a F-15...you can sustain that performance until your out of fuel or G-LOC
      but yeah, ITR and STR are no more important or less important then each other
      remember...
      a F-15 and F-16 and Eurofighter dominate in BFM because
      they have outstanding instant and sustained turn rates and superior Ps to Flankers and Fulcrums
      You hear a lot about instant because it's the fastest and tightest turn
      really, so people will judge on that
      but trust me
      even with full afterburners cooking?
      There is a TON of drag induced into the instant so it is wise to hit instant and go to 180º's
      because usually after 250 knots? your aircrafts instant turn rate drops like a brick and a stall can occur but usually your radius opens up and rate falls down to which you become a "grape"(which a grape refers to a grape rip for picking-i.e to be shot down by another enemy fighter with better performance at that time)
      so it's best to use Instant to line up a shot, get out of trouble, turn into a opponent and get into a steep climb quickly evade threats.
      sustained is truly BFM, albeit it's usually at faster speeds....it is slower and the radius is wider then the Instant
      but you can sustain it longer and if your thrust to drag ratio is 1:1 like the F-15's is(which even at combat weight it has a thrust to drag ratio of 1:1)
      pretty much means you can hold this performance until again out of fuel or G-loc
      so sustained and instant should be equally as important
      if you know planes
      and BFM
      they are both needed...equally
      a instant turn fighter is good but poor energy management and harder to fly but again it has über good instant turn performance...but has poor sustained and harder to fly(a good example of this is the F-104 the heavy stubby winged fighter)
      a sustained fighter has better stability and easier to fly and has also better energy and BFM but lacks in the quick turns of a instant which can be deadly in air to air being that a poorer energy and sustained rate of turn fighter albeit better rate and radius then can quickly out turn that fighter and pretty much out dive and roll back gain energy and out turn a sustained fighter(like the MiG-21 which was really good at sustained or at least better then the heavier F-4 albeit it has energy bleeding problems worse then any soviet fighter..even the MiG-17 has better energy which the MiG-21 proved to be good at instant but against other fighters like a F-8 it proved to have energy in the BFM)
      so ITR and STR must always be considered
      because a fighter that lack in one but is good in the other can be out matched quickly and has a serious disadvantage and it's "shot time" to make a kill or any time to make a kill is much lower and opportunities to do so are much lower.
      but a good example of a energy fighter is the F-15A/B/C/D
      which A: had extremely tight turn radiuses and extremely fast turn rates so it could out turn it;s counter parts which is why some Eagle pilots are so cocky
      but it matches energy performance of the EM theory to give good thrust to drag and wing design for instant turn advantage as well as a good sustained turn performance. that is why a eagle pilots favorite thing to do is suck a enemy plane into a turn..knowing that no plane other then the Raptor and Eurofighter(for sustained at least) can match his turn rate and sustain it but like a MiG-29 vs F-15C
      F-15C can out turn a MiG-29 and sustain that performance
      while the MiG-29 will bleed it's energy and open it's radius tus becoming a grape
      a good example of this is when a F-15A and F-15B's fought French F-1's
      F-1's believed to out turn this fighter where surprised to find out they had a lower T/W and T/D ratio's and a couple instances where the Eagle out turned them so quickly....that they didn't even believe it..due to it's size...but like the Su-27...it turn well not as much as a F-15C MSIP II(F-100-220 DEEC) engine but very close too
      it's massive and it turns well
      but yeah, I hope you learned something
      never sacrifice one to over strengthen the other.

    those planes have a crazy power to weight ratio, people go on about how good the phantom was etc etc but these new ones will thrash most others out there. Must be so much fun to get to fly one, but those pilots deserve it...they worked hard to get their wings.
