Suck It UP Butternut!!! - Wood Turning

- A very odd shaped piece of Butternut to begin, an elegant, unique bowl to finish. This natural edge piece gave me a hard time due to the difficulties in turning this very hard wood. Visits to the sharpening station were necessary and frequent.

What a terrific turn. I love your unconventional shapes and unique edge pieces. Thanks for sharing your talents with us!
Thank you very much, Danella! 😊
Thanks for responding, Phil. I watch you all the time. You are my Zen place
Really nice piece of work. Isn't it great how you can take a lump of wood and turn into something that's really attractive. Very satisfying and love the fact that you're not wedded to round!
Thank you, Ray!
Phil
I REALLY appreciate the absence of annoying background music! Great just hearing the real workshop sounds.
I hqve the closed captionnon ... it identifies the sound the gouges make as music, and tbe scraper as applause.
I thought I was tired and about to go to bed but I just couldn't help but watch one more magic trick from Phil (nothing up his sleeve). How he can make something that odd shaped wood into something to marvel at is commendable , it defies all odds. I also I think the sanding sealer on that grey bark changed the color, The light color did not bring out its full potential of that piece, while enhancing the beauty of the bowl. Still all in all it turned out beautiful, well done. KEEP ON TURNING
Thanks, Howard, now get some sleep! 😊
Yep, you are right. This is a pretty nice open faced bowl. Real cool grain and color. I like it a bunch. Especially with the weathered edge.
Well Phil, i am watching you turn this little scrap of Butternut into a great piece of art, while i also watch Thursday Night Football... thanks for your guidance...
Ah, a multi-tasker, Russ. Good for you! Thank you for including me in your Thursday evening!
Phil
The grey going darker is what it really needed. Beautiful bowl, both the shape and the wood color and figure.
Cool, thanks, D! 😊
You my friend aren't a woodturner anymore but an Artist . That is beautiful art.
I'm so glad you like it, PJ, thank you! 😊
I love the shape of that bowl, so much more interesting than a perfectly round one. The grain on that piece sure is pretty.
Cool, thank you, Heather! 😊
So pretty, I think the grey looked great and the colour didn't completely change. Love it!
Thank you, Ruth! 😊
Beautiful bowl, Phil. You did exactly what I hoped you would do. Anyone can turn a round bowl but the Phil specials are always better.
Really love how this piece turned out. Love the bark edge. Makes it really stand out.
Thank you, Earl! 😊
Unusual shaped bowls are great. The sawed edge gives it lots of character as does the live edge. The grain is amazing.
Thank you so much, Peg! 😊
When I saw the raw piece of wood I couldn’t imagine how that would turn into such a beautiful bowl. Your work is inspiring.
Another great piece
I first thought there wouldn’t be anything in that small piece but as usual, just watch Phil
We’ll show you something turned out really nice. Have a great day. Have a great day.
Thank you, Duane! 😊
Good afternoon from Edmonton, Kentucky!
I saw the title you chose for this video, and had(!) to watch it immediately. It just showed up in my YT feed today, even though it was posted 3 years ago. Better late than not at all. 😀
The vast amount of time you have practiced your craft shows in what your finished projects look like. Thank you for making magic again!
Awesome! Thank you, Anne! 😊
Phil, just absolutely, a great looking turning, I just can not get over your ability to discover the LOOK in a piece of wood.
So nice to read your comment, Ron, thank you!
Phil
Don’t know how I missed this beauty 2 years ago. ❤️❤️❤️
Wine? LOL!
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop don’t mind if I do! Thank you. 🤣
Dramatic grain! Like your approach to retaining as much of the blank as possible. Your wood donors certainly send you interesting pieces.
Thank you, Paul! I have the best, most generous viewers and I'm so grateful for them! 😊
I have never turned butternut, Phil. In fact, I don't think I have ever seen it. If the figure is always as lovely as what you uncovered I would love to try some one day. Thanks for sharing! You did your usual beautiful job of turning!
.....Gord
Also called White Walnut, Gord. The grain does resemble Walnut but the turning characteristics are not as pleasant. Still, I'm glad I had my first opportunity with it. Thank you for watching and commenting, my friend!
Phil
A beautiful bowl. You always manage to bring out the natural beauty. Thank you 😊
Thank you so much, Rosie! 😊
Beautiful grain and color, I like the rustic live edges and saw cut. Very nice bowl with interesting shape. Thank you!
Thank you very much, Texana! I'm so glad you like the edges the way they are. I think it just adds a little something extra.
Once again I'm thinking that's an ugly odd shaped ugly color piece of wood. What can he do with that. Boy did you SHOW ME. That bowl is stunning. I love the cool shape and the wood is just beyond gorgeous 😍
I just wasn't sure how this one would turn out, as you say, it was kind of ugly. But, it had some hidden beauty and I'm glad we all got to see it. Thanks, Glenda!
Really enjoy your videos, your running commentary but mostly your attitude.
Thank you, Craig!
Phil
Gorgeous end product Phil, I like this piece very much, beautiful grain and the bark seems to have lightened up now that it is dry. You are a real inspiration, thanks!
Thank you, Malcolm! 😊
Hi Phil.....that is a lovely bowl...really like the shape saw cut and all...the grain in the butternut is beautiful....lovely finish as well....cheers...All the best.....Andy
Thank you very much, Andy!
Phil
A unique shape, really pretty wood, and a functional bowl. - all bases covered. I appreciate you start with an open mind and let the wood speak to you. Nice job.
Thank you, Decon, for your great comment!
Phil
Hi Phil what a nice 👍 looking little bowl 🍲.
Beautiful piece. Love the grain and how you use the bark as an accent.
Thank you very much, Darrell!
I didn't think much of that odd looking scrap but you pulled another Phil and made a thing of beauty. Well done buddy.
Thank you, Rick! 😊
That is some gorgeous grain! It looks like it cuts like butter but you’re sharpening up often! Wow! The sanding sealer makes it phenomenal!
It cuts like butter because of all the sharpening, Tina! LOL! Thank you for watching! 😊
The piece is a delight of color and pattern. Butternut Yummmmmm!
Thank you, Judith! 😊
Butternut is an awesome carving wood. It should turn like a dream.
😊
I like your approach to this bowl. I’ve never turned Butternut but the grain and color looks nice. Great job!
Love the grain....brilliant job as usual.
Really nice bowl Phil. I love the shape, the wavy grain, the natural edge…..all of it! It’s beautiful.
Thank you! 😊 Cheers!
That is a lovely bowl, yet so simple. You did it again, Phil. 10/10
Wow, thanks, Bill! 😊
I really like the unusual shape. Beautiful bowl.
Thank you very much, Jean!
Another winner Phil. Thanks again for sharing your talents.
Incredible! I love this piece! Thank you for sharing it!
Stunning!! Love the unique shape
Hi Phil, another lovely piece. I like it, when you turn the unusally pieces into wonderful bowls. In my opinion, leaving as much as possible natural parts on the bowls, give them more character. I like also to leave the bark and chainsaw cuts like you do. It makes it more interessting and tells more story. Its always hard to decide, to leave as much as possible bark or have a thin bowl. Love the things you do
Thank you, Gunther, for taking your time to watch and for your wonderful, uplifting comment. Much appreciated!
Phil
Beautiful, love the unusual shape great finish.
Beautiful bowl!!! The inside and outside grain reminds me of gentle ocean waves coming to shore. Just enough bark for the piece and love the shape. Your usual amazing work!!! 😊
Thanks, Mary! 😊
I love when you leave a live edge! Beautiful piece!
Very nice Phil! Between you and Gary, I look at wood pieces in a whole different way now. Thanks for that! Rick
Very welcome, Rick, I'm so glad you are considering options you hadn't thought of. 😊
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop Phil, I couldn’t see an email address on your website. I would like to send you a picture of some very interesting wood I’ve just come across. No idea what it is, but it has some fungus and spalting, and some perhaps interesting shape/design opportunities. Rick
What a beautiful piece of art that 'turned' out to be. Thanks Phil once again!
Howard
Love the shape. The grain looks amazing.
Looking at the grain on one of your pieces can take me a while. I'm like this also with a map in front of me. I like to explore what is there. This butternut grain is does it for me, presented in the bowl you have turned. Thanks Phil.
Cool, thanks, Richard! 😊
What a lovely piece
"Butternut"; Who would have thought. I was a woodcarver until recent years and I carved a lot of Butternut. It does carve quite well but I never thought about turning it. I still have a few pieces around and you have given me some inspiration. Next turning "Butternut". I wonder about Bass wood or Lynden. I have an 8"X4" piece of spalted Bass that I might try as well. I love the work you do Phil and I have learned a lot from watching and listening to your narration. Thank you so much for sharing.
Thanks for sharing, Dan and thank you for watching! 😊
Another exquisite bowl. That was a great gift from Kami. I didn't know there was a tree called 'butternut', only the squash. Thank you very much for sharing.
Haha! Butternut squash grow on butternut trees! 😂❤
Beautiful design and features, you really know/feel how to get the best out of a piece of wood. Thank you for sharing!
Turned out beautiful! Butternut is really pretty!
😊
I LIKE that bowl.
Yes, I like the shape, it reminds me of Mid Century Modern. Plus I believe the graining and the raw edge support that look.
That's one very sexy bowl you've got there Phil.
That's really good work & choices. I'm really glad you didn't go any thinner with it.
Cool, thank you so much! 😊
Great bowl phil another great piece of work 👍
Beautiful wood and you did it very well.
Wow, I could not have done any better myself. That is beautiful, thank you Phil.
Beautiful work! The wood says it all.
I like this bowl a lot! It reminds me of a miniature dough bowl with the elongated end. When I was little my mom would tell me about going into the woods with her grandma to pick butternuts. This is the first time I’ve seen an actual piece of the tree. So, thank you, Phil and Cami, for sharing!💕
Ah, memories, Dianna. An unplanned but pleasant side effect of my channel. I often get to hear about viewers memories as they relate to a turning. I love that!
Phil
One awesome bowl. Beautiful
Thank you, Tony, I'm glad you like it!
Phil
Beautiful Phil, certainly one of your best bowls!
Thank you for speeding up the process. Beautiful product!

Thank you! Cheers! 😊
Extremely nice!
Once again you find the beauty from within.
😊
Great job Phil!! I like how you left the cut marks on the edge!!
I'm glad you like that, Brian. I often wonder if I'm the only one that likes that kind of thing. For me, it just adds another dimension to the piece, something different to feel. Thank you!
Phil
Another masterpiece from the master Beautiful Phil .Terry down under

Beautiful grain and you did artistic justice to that piece of butternut wood!!! Thanks and I find myself answering you during the video LOL!!
Thank you, Ruthlyn! I'm always listening for my viewers comments but sometimes it's too loud to hear really well. But, I'm really glad you answer! LOL!
Phil
That came out gorgeous. Nice job

Beautiful work! I love how you used every available inch of you had!
That is one awesome looking bowl Phil, I had my doubts in the beginning but you turned it into a masterpiece.
You always do such a great job. I love the bowl. Thanks for sharing Phil.
😊
Lovely work once again what a beautiful wood and finish 👌👌
Hi Phil, incredible looking bowl. You did make me smile when you said you don't like turning round bowls. No truer words said. One of these days I'll turn a bowl that is not round. Take care of yourself my friend. Cheers, Huw
Thank you, Huw!
Phil
Scotland. Love it from start to finish. Both educational and inspirational. Playing catch-up on u tube.

Thank You Phil...(Thank You Kami)...Butternut, new 2 me. Kami it seems like your little chunk gave Phil more of a workout than he expected. This is great. Keeps Phil on his toes. Perhaps send more unusual chunks Kami ???...Beautiful Phil....tm
Thank you, Tuffy! Yes, the resistance to the gouge was a surprise to me! Kamie did send another piece with this one, Oak. I'll get to it, for sure!

That turnwd out quite lovely!
It surprised me. Glad you like it, K8, thank you!
I love h final look of the bowl, leaving the natural edge really brings life to the piece 2 thumbs up. Mark Dutka
Beautiful wood! Very nice.
Love it! At first I thought it would look like a shovel but now, at the finish, I simply want to have it to feel the surface and have it standing around so I can touch it with my eyes... if I may say so!
You're a master of the art, Phil! I wonder how it would have looked like with a reddish coating... but I like your 'natural design' very much!
Phil this is an amazing bowl. The wood grain is absolutely perfect and magnificent. Oh so awesome.
Thank you, Kobie, I'm glad you like it!
Phil
Awesome piece..you're an artist phil..i like hearing the tools cutting the wood
