    Challenge of the Day: How extreme could an open segmented bowl be made using this or similar approach? I was thinking of making the base wider, more smaller shapes & bow ties and perhaps a couple of layers.

    • @clockmakerify
      @clockmakerify Před 3 lety +1

      I think the smaller shapes could only be made from the burl. Regular wood, with year rings, would not give you enough strength. Even at this size, you got a wood chip, and surprisingly only one chip.

    • @RayWhitbyCreations
      @RayWhitbyCreations  Před 3 lety +2

      @@clockmakerify Hi Valery. I agree and wish I could get a lot of big sized burls to play with! The alternatives I thought could also work was to orientate the grain circumferentially, or to keep axially but place sacrificial wood in the channels, may also work.

      @@RayWhitbyCreations Good luck with your incredibly beautiful art. I agree with you that the second option is theoretically possible, but practice can give you so many surprises.

      I came up with an idea. Make a locking vase out of birch, redwood, ebony... turn it into a unique flowing shape. Sand and polish. Then pour clear epoxy resin around it but inside the resin put gold flakes off of eBay. It’s thin stuff so you have to be careful stirring it into the epoxy. Then re-turn the piece again...sand and polish. That would be cool!

      Is there a clear material strong enough to hold the pieces together while it's being cut to take the place of the bowties so it looks like the segments are floating

      As a person who enjoys every form of art I totally understand what you're saying.. I mostly just drawn paint but I want to learn pottery, how to sculpt, woodturning, and resin tying it all together... But I believe you have the skills to do it all as well, because I saw how meticulous and the quality of detail you wanted to put into your piece.

A Spanish singer at Billingham international folk festival called me Ramondo when I was in my teens and it sounds sooo sexy. Pity I was ignorant and innocent at the time 😕. @@RayWhitbyCreations hi again Ray(mond). Thanks for your interest. I bought a second hand lathe 16 years ago and was afraid to use it until recently. I have upgraded to a Coronet Herald and use DeWalt cordless tools. I’m not sure if I should use this terminology on here but I’ll take the risk. That was the first time I’d been off that board in almost 40 years (I was 62 on that occasion) and had cremasteric reflex - look it up and you’ll understand. It would be nice if we could keep in touch. Regards
