Am I missing something? I had assumed we wouldn’t see this as it was covered by the non-publishing agreement or whatever it’s called? I thought it wasn’t allowed to be shown and that’s why no one else is? Is it different for tech server??

Watching this live was a full on nerdgasm.. This tech, whilst not a brand new design, is revolutionary in this massive scale and with such an advanced game. That much data being managed this well, is efficiency at its all time peak. Nice work CIG, looking forward to the bigger and better iterations of server meshing in the future. actually no.
Server, code, the polygons themselves nothing is optimized today.
If it works like this TODAY, it means that it is not at its best and the margins for improvement on an optimized code have a much higher margin.

    This test felt so unreal.
I had massive client side performance gains on my machine that I absolutely didn´t expect. The game felt buttery smooth.
But after thinking about it for some time it also wasn´t that surprising since that also happened in the old Leski offline build back in ye olden days.
As a non evo the first working server recovery was also mind blowing.
Sure, stuff broke a lot and it´s a long way from being stable - but it´s working and it brought the boost to server performance that the game needs.

I played and it was cool to see. I played later. There was already a patch and servers had been up for 5 hours. Server got down as low as 20 fps in the beginning but was a rock solid 30 fps the rest of the night. I do not know how many people were in my shard but it felt like 150-200. I saw the exact moment I transitioned over to another server and it was flawless. I NEVER would have known if it hadn't been for the debug console telling me. I experienced no 30ks but I did have a bug with my mobiGlas that wouldn't allow me to take any mission. I really wanted to try the NPC AI. Everything just felt like how it should. No delays.
Inventory UI is still a little slow but I don't think tat is a server issue. That just needs to be optimized more. I didn't think we would see this until Q4 this year at the earliest! Now, I am going to have to upgrade my machine because I'm clearly the slowest part of this system now. That blows my mind. Biggest issue besides missions was the loading time into the game. Maybe 5-10 minutes. I suspect they turned on allll the debug code.for this so I don't think it was typical.
I saw it with my own eyes, on my own computer. I've waited years for this. It works! It was like your best server experience ever. No AI were even standing on furniture. I could not find 1 glitching AI. One of those Refund guys called server meshing snake oil, that it would never work per planet. Though they can never bring themselves to admit it. They'll move the goalposts before admitting they've been proven wrong. It's real folks. Sure, it has some bugs but the foundation felt more solid then it had any right to for being such an early tech preview.

    • @CaptEirikr

You're getting good advice in these replies; the upcoming 3.23 patch is gonna be huge, but isn't including server meshing (it should have the replication layer split which brings in crash recovery), and you should expect the month after a major patch like 3.23 or the following Server Meshing patch to be a buggy nightmare. When they added Persistent Entity Streaming last spring, it took 6 weeks to get the game back into an ok-ish playable state. Hopefully it will be smoother in the future, but you should expect the worst so if it goes well you can be pleasantly surprised.
The reality is, it's incomplete in it's current state, so it's a buggy mess; expect to have to contend with stupid unfriendly designs and bugs that you'd never expect to see in a finished game. That said, so long as you're managing your expectations, this game can truly blow you away, with some incredible visuals, fun ship flight, and immersive experiences. If 3.23 has a smooth deployment, it should be even more impressive, with a lot of improvements to the FPS gameplay, EVA movement, an overhaul of the ship combat and flight models (this is controversial, but gamers with argue about anything), a more modern character creator, and the addition of personal hangars for your ships that should be customizable (in a sort of primitive way for now). The full list of things in the release view is exciting (robertsspaceindustries.com/roadmap/release-view), but again, with a big patch deployment comes a lot of ways for things to break. Manage expectations, and come and join the fun!

Some of the hard 30ks were because people were trying to go to Pyro via the JP when specifically told not to because it would crash things. The recovery system got a workout though. SMH Another epic milestone in the bag though for sure.

I wonder how server transfers work if you are inside a ship without being in the pilot's party.
Ideally: If you are inside someone's ship without being in party, you should still be attached to the ship object and travel with that ship to the new server. Same should be true if other ships and vehicles are parked inside a large ship.
Let's hope that's how they implemented it. :)

I'm really interested to see what all configurations they test and the results. The minimum viable product for Server Meshing from the Letter From The Chairman two years ago was described as 2 servers per system (Pyro and Stanton) connected to a single Replication Layer to form a single shard, and that was to be tested before the release of 4.0. Obviously still lots of work to be done by CIG but so cool to see instances of it working really well, and given that it was open to wave 2 this is pretty incredible at this scale and for only the second round of testing! They're iterating FAST.

My fear is that I will be landed at a POI. Then server crashes. I get thrown to another server. Replication server restores my parked ship. Another ship was already parked there on that switched server. The ships explode. Hehe.
It's especially a problem because people leave ships and log out at all POIs already. Like at ground vehicle depots there's usually 8 ships permanently parked.
I hope they do something to automatically teleport your ship to a safe spot when needed (another hangar, or on the ground further away from a POI, or slightly shifted if in space).

Very good overall presentation, just make sure not to mix up servers (DGS) and shard.
If you think that's impressive, this will blow your mind: go to the edge between two servers, and you will be able to interact with a friend in another ship, see him move, tractor beam, shoot , etc.
I strongly suggest Wala OM1, go "up" 153km from OM1, and you'll be at the limit.
Only do at OM1 or 2 (north/south), other points will have the planetary rotation that will fail the test.

It kind of means you have to be Pixel-perfect on the jump. If the ship needs to adjust at any scale, then it fails to link.
I find it to be funny. Even server meshing is not new. Its been as far back as 2001. Its just CIG like everything to throw off the marketing is that they make up their own names for things to make them seem new. I'm a 3D artist and modeler, so it's quite funny to see them talking about things as if they were talking to children, because we all know children are stupid and fall for anything.
The real goal for SC and Sq42 was never to build a game. This is what you tell the people willing to pay. The real goal was to build a game engine and a studio that could be self-sustaining. So now it's a company that can make other game titles and get investor money to keep afloat. Making the games was just an afterthought.
When you make a product you need that product to last a really long time they call this plan. "The Ten Year Plan" nearly every company makes this plan mostly when it comes to games. Once it gets outdated you make a new one. kinda like what GTA and Red Dead is to R*.
The true end game for CIG was never the game. it was always building a company.

@@heru_ur6017 I doubt Chris Roberts would have publicly said at CitCon that it made him cry when he first saw server meshing working if it is old tech that has been around for years. He'd look like an idiot. From a reddit comment:
The biggest misconception I see about server meshing is that it is just instances. With each game server having authority over discreet instances and the players within the instance.
Of course, this has been done before.
Server meshing, however, takes authority of the players away from the game servers and hands it to a handling service called the replication layer. This means the player is essentially connected to multiple servers at once. Each server has authority over its area. However, the player receives data from all servers without preference. This means you can interact and affect objects on other servers without knowing it is on a different server, from, say, your ship.
A few games come close to this, mostly peer to peer, where there is a rapid transition between areas, but I am not aware of any games that allow you to interact with multiple game servers as if you are connected to all of them equally.
The end goal of server meshing is that servers will be able to react to player density and are able to start up and manage any size of area dynamically. For example, you could have 100 players spread across a moon, all on one server, and one player could spawn a large ship and invite all of the players on board. All 100 players meet up and board the ship. A server would boot up to manage that ship. This would then allow the original server to carry on simulating the moon for any other players in the area.

  • @YouCountSheep
    @YouCountSheep Před 5 měsíci

Yeah eventually all the servers they have now will just become one big one, EU, US etc, and the previous servers where we were seperated and had like 90 ish players on each one of those will manage one planet and the entire system can have thousands of players in it connected by server meshing. That was always the dream.

From what I understand, this specific test had one server running the Stanton planets ONLY, and another that handled all other space in Stanton. Basically everyone on a planet is on a single server, but once you quantum jump and get far enough from the planet, you switch to another server.
Some other channels have shown that they received a "Server Error" notification while in qt, but their friends on planets were fine.
The interesting thing is that the last test consisted of each solar system had its own server, but only one server each. I thought that was going to be the first configuration of server meshing to hit live (whenever that happens), but this kind of blows my mind that they are testing multiple servers per system already.
This is super promising because, as buggy as this is, it shows that whatever we get on live will be able to scale, even if it's static and not dynamic. Super cool stuff.

@@yous2244 In the end they intend to have this spread across many servers and clients, spreading the data load... meaning that your FPS will be way higher when you don't need to stream all the data from the rest of the playable universe.

So what we can conclude is, servers is still dog shit even tho its gonna add some form of server meshing, i bet good servers are still several years away. The tech is still not there on this scale, many other games can handle 4-600 players a lot easier, even on a large scale. Games like rust etc. Having 100's of bases on the Island and 500+ players and not a single lag.

It was a test. You can't conclude much of anything because you don't know what the parameters of the test were. And no game does server meshing the way Star Citizen is going about it.

From one channel to the next one, people glorifying a half finished product.
We are all to blame for this what should have been an unacceptable product.
