Our GT-R’s Built RB26 went BOOM! - But Why?

- Blowing an engine is a right of passage for modifying (especially a GT-R) but the sad part is when you don’t learn from it. So, why did we blow an engine? That’s where the lessons are learned.

Respect for not blaming the manufacturer for the faults and taking ownership of your own mistake.
It was a pretty classy video all round to be fair
I see what you did there lol
But the manufacturer admitted there pistons weren't up to the job and dropped that product from production
@@Big2009Gee Idk about you but when I order parts they all say something like "good up to 600hp" if you push 900 through it that isnt on the manufacturer.
Parts are intended to handle what they are designed for and the company made two grades.
These were likely the lower grade one and they bought the engine with unknown pistons. I'm fairly sure it is impossible to find out which ones they are without asking the original builder or doing destructive testing in a lab so...
It was a risk and we all learnt a lesson!
“Knock knock...”
“Who’s there?”

Number 3 who??

note to self, fit an oil filter to my turbo lines.....
aye was thinking the same thing, good idea for sure!
definitely...
There is a filter oil cooler combo you can get
Saved it because the car was turned off so quickly. Would of ran dry otherwise. Filter didn't save turbo most likely just shit in the oil galleries or pipe in there. Oil filters don't just fail and pump out metallic shit that quickly
@@driftdevelopments8212 the guy literally said the filter on his turbo line was full of metal.... So yeh it did save the turbo.....
This is like an air crash investigation show but for cars

Thank you!

Wow. That’s incredible. Thanks for sharing and breaking it down!🤙🏼
congrats on your new coffee table. i might turn my EJ25 into a coffee table/conversation piece in my new house.
Didn't know about those turbo oil filters, pretty smart product. Great vid.👍

Great videos as usual !!!! We all knew it was coming just didnt know how. Impressive to say the least 6+ years cant complain.
Loved watching how far you pushed the first motor. Sad the cheap rebuild failed... Can't wait to see how the next generation build goes!
Interesting video, can't wait to see it with the new stronger build :D
Pretty much had the exact same thing happen with my rb. 😭
Oh well time to make it better. Great videos , keep em coming !

Great video btw, I never noticed you actually used a mic until now since your audio is always good.
Not gonna lie, I do enjoy when you tell a manufacturer "hey we did this this and this and it failed", and they go "which part was it?.. Oh no you don't want that one, that's the cheap one and you're gonna see stretched out gudgeon (or wrist pin in the states)" and it's exactly what happened.
Sucks to think you have good forged pistons and only have OEM or sub OEM grade.
Now excuse me while I go add a turbo oil line filter to my couple of turbo cars ;-)
I think oil filter sales will be up this month. GCG actually posted the pics of it on their facebook and instagram. On the flip side, at least someone from that parts company admitted the problem, but has now fixed the issue with new design and new factory
@@MotiveVideo props to them for sure. I've told big manufactures about design issues in the states and they just brush my comments off for years until several people started commenting about failures or issues down the road.
You're an idiot, they are used pistons do you know how they were used before he got to them? Use your brain better.
@@msengineeringdavid3702 For someone with Engineering in their screen name, I would have thought you'd know how important material selection is to a design... especially considering the heat cycles and stresses pistons see. Especially in the wrist pin area with a high RPM motor like the RB26.
Plus the original engine looked like a factory rebuild with forged pistons (if you saw the original video). It's possible the previous owner damaged them in some way, but with the manufacturer discontinuing the pistons due to a poor material choice, it's not likely that the previous owner damaged the pistons so perfectly that it lasted for many power runs and races and then failed without the tune, oil, or coolant issues contributing to it. If it failed immediately, you'd have a point. But this looks like a fatigue failure due to improper material selection. Especially considering that multiple wrist pins were loose, not just the one of the failure. But you know, there I go using my brain better
Initial DIY mods you just posted a comment assuming USED pistons were still okay saying it sucks they making something that’s not as strong after it’s BEEN MADE clear there was excessive wrist pin wear. If the stock pistons did 650 whp no problem these would have exceeded that *if it was in good condition to START with*
Ouchies, goes to show eh,..... amazing detailed video, You done well champs!
In Australia GTR is called GDR 😂 😂 😂
Incredibly useful channel
0:17 you scratched the rad with the coolant hose, tsss xD
Just broke an engine. Time to make more power lol I love this channel
was just one cylinder that wanted to be in a 1jz so bad...poor lil guy just ended it all
i just watched the rb26 vs 2jz comparison before this. makes wondering why the stiffer block wasnt chosen lol
still awesome job guys. insanity at its finest (in a good way)!
I see your problem your freeze plug on cylinder 3 came out might want to get that checked out

Love this series, now I want an RB26 powered car. Think I'll get a Stagea 260RS :). Nice family wagon.
Not going to lie but I never seen or to think of putting a filter on the inlet of the turbo. THANKS I will be spreading that knowledge.
Andrew you’re one of the most chill person I’ve ever seen, the car will be on the road soon, mark my words! Loving the content man🤟🏻
It's somehow interesting to pull the engine apart to see what happened. Giving a great
oppertunity to build better.
I was really happy to see you talk to Adam LZ about his rb25. Ive been bugging him since he got that car to get with you guys. Keep up the great work/sorry to hear about the 2.6
You don't even personally know him and they only met a SEMA Adam annoyingly doesn't know shit.
@@msengineeringdavid3702 cool story bro. I dgaf what your opinion is.
mattybeatzkidd fact.. stop swinging from LZ’s balls that dude is literally dyslexic, he takes that skyline to the track and was told not to dump the clutch... does exactly what he was told not to do and breaks the car you can’t get any dumber than that.
@@msengineeringdavid3702 There's always them few that are up his arse so far they're blind. I personally can't stand Adam, don't see the appeal of his content either.
If you can't stand him, why do you go out of your way to talk about him? Why not fuck off and do something more constructive with your time?
I had that happened once, but with a stock M52B28 engine with roughly 100k miles. The remaining of the rod was still intact in the crank, all bearings were perfect. But my piston stayed inside the engine, perfectly inside the bore, the wrist pin was there also. Just tiny hole in the block. Guess the rod gave up on life lol
Uncle rodney eh.. great video!!
Fuck I only just discovered this Chanel and I fucking love it. Keep up the good videos boys
Keep the gtr projects coming
Wow the rod broke at the strongest point

What is the title of the following video from this showing the sound from the larger 1.15 exh housing mate? Motive?
Mine did the same .
Gudgeon pin said no more "snap" picked up my piston ,rings off the road .
😞
Where is this video you're speaking of in the beginning of this video?
@10:15 whats the difference of 101 housing or 115 housing...milimeters?
There has been some cases of a t51r mod done, and caused a nasty harmonic , and caused the main turbo shaft to break. Has there been any success with your turbo with that mod done ? Just curious is all.
Crazy that's the 2nd block in a week I've seen that happen too but the first was with much les power
Today, there are no less than five variations of the RB26DETT engine block.
Maybe its just a weak one with a too narrow cylinder wall thickness or it has less nickel-content in its casting.
Did you watcj the video before commenting? The block had nothing to do with this failure.
@@MotiveVideo I write the word "Maybe"
So, it could also be a bad block
And, yeah i watch the full Video
There are so many failures like this one on bad RB blocks
One time its the sixt cylinder and one the third...
But easy, no hard feelings my friend :) (yes, i know, im not your friend;)

Did you ever read this: dsportmag.com/the-tech/rb26dett-building-blocks-which-rb26dett-block-is-right-for-you/
Not many people know but the RB26s were designed for group a racing, the block internally braced, individual throttle boddies, fantastic motor. Old motor did a nice a job!! Goodwork guys.
New one?
Nice blokes at CRD and Nitto to give you a used 26 :) Have you considered hooking up with Itscardo (R32 lambo kill youtuber) for a collab? He's in Aus somewhere and busy with his RB30 build.. Would be cool to watch

since it didnt spin a bearing was the crank salvageable? just need to be re-balanced?
So much debris went through engine it damaged the crank too much.
Hey Andrew, who is doing the T51R mod?? I only found a place in the US who do it but postage is killer.
NashiusMaximus hypergear turbos do the mod
so what happens to the block now ?
Any video footage of the car letting go?
tajh gill no. Was just on a normal afternoon drive at the time. It is a street car after all
Good on you, and the manufacturer to be straight up and say the power level was higher than that part was made to handle.
Tbh when a manufacturer says "this is good for about 600hp" and you make almost 1000, you cannot really blame their part for failing.

Jesus! Sent the piston and the sleeve onto the road!😮😮😮
Piston number 3 was like nup.
moral of the story is keep updated on each of your aftermarket components
Well this is certainly a surprise!
JohnnyNismo was for us too
@@MotiveVideo really?
Any reason why you’re not considering the rb30 block?
dohc1974 we probably will for a future build, but mainly right now is price
So last time i checked an rb30 block is cheaper then rb26 block ?
Not if u want to keep awd, the motor it self may be cheaper but all the extra work needed to fit it costs drive it way up.
Using second hand unknown spec pistons was where the downfall began tbh
Must be heartbreaking when rod flies out through the block without any warning.
Damn that block is so thin there.
those motors have a notorious cylinder wall differential...some engine blocks are better than others.
you played with rb20s much guys?
Just curious if they were Manley rods ?We have been having issues with brand new Manley rods bending and breaking recently . Several RBs and 2js with this exact outcome.
BoostedTV Nitto rods, it they’re not what initially broke. Have to watch the video
Damn I dont need my jz doing that
Without saying the name of the manufacturer, is it possible to name the two different alloys you were talking about? I'm guess it is 2618 and 4032, but i don't like to guess. That's why I am asking :-)
it happen to mine Gtr it a 1993 Gtr I drove on the free way and the engine didn't run. my Gtr is at my backyard it can't run, I spent 6gram on the car!
Darton sleave!
Well shit. Sad to see such a beast of a car went pop, but thanks for making this video about it. Certainly reaffirms my paranoia about modified engines and the need to yank them apart and double check *everything* if you weren't the one that built it
Curiously, did it harm the crank on self destruction?
Watch the video. You can see it
that dude at 5:35 could challenge the Tuning Fork height-wise....
hot damn !! hahaha looks way worse then the photo! very very cool to see the issue diagnosed and not just blamed on a manufacturer for the easy way out. respect right there. curious though, are you saying its cheaper not to build a 30 just based on the fact you wont be going the N1 block route because of the brace? Good data coming im sure as always bro.
The N1 blocks are actually very rare and somewhat hard to find and when you do find one, they normally have over 40,000 miles on them and the price is unforgiving...- $2,000-$6,000 USD. eBay has them for around $3,000 to $4,000 but you can't be a 100% sure about parts sold on eBay.
Plus, there are various companies out there that sell RB30 blocks such as Tomei,OS Giken,HKS Cosworth for around the same price or a little higher with nearly 5x the quality of used N1 blocks
@@amropanmotorsport6417 ebay sellers that have them are from Japan the majority of them.
@@msengineeringdavid3702 But they aren't worth the cost... Aftermarket blocks seem to be engineered better. I guess it's because of the availability of new technology
RIP RB block dwindling numbers.
Need to know more about this T51R mod 😍
Look up HKS T51R turbo videos and you will understand exactly what the mod does.
certain style of anti surge sleeve inserted into the comp cover around the wheel to give that famous sound
Ocdworx is a company that will modify a used or brand new turbo cold side to give it a loud spool. Their website is t51r.com
My COMP CT4x with anti-surge housing sounded very similar to the T51R. Not quite as loud but it had the "holy f**k there's an F18 under the hood" effect.
@@steve.r33 fuck yea !
Can I buy the block if i were to pay the shipping (to the netherlands) + some? If you plan on just throwing it away, i'd like to have it.

@@MotiveVideo not sure why either, but guess it'd just be cool to have a bit of history

@@MotiveVideo no worries. Thank you.
such an outdated turbo these days but fuck you can't beat that look and the sound of the spool
@@miskone1044 pardon me sir but tje t51r whistling sound doesnt have anything to do with spooling etc. The air compressor is fitted with an antisurge housing which has an aie siren built into it. That being said when the turbo just hits a certain rpm it already starts to make that sound. And that happens way before u are seeing positive boost.
One of the more wanky factors haha I love that your just brutally honest
My guess was the wrist pin or defective rod. Especially after saying no rod bearing failure

where does your turbo get the oil feed from? I don't have an extra filter on the oil line and would be interested in understanding where did the metal come from in the oil line. I'm assuming the turbo is feeding from the main oil galley which should be after the oil filter ?
Janne Kotka the oil feed is in side of block between 3 and 4. When it let go all sorts of metal and through the oil system and through the oil line
it feeds directly after the filter if i remember well before the main journals
Janne Kotka when you fuck bearing surfaces up inside an engine it gets picked right back up and gets pumped to all places of the engine.
Unbelievable in the comments about different engines, you might even think it was grade school children at the keyboard. Barra this, 2JZ that, Coyote this. C'mon children behave and act your age. You make the car hobby look horribly immature by this constant bickering about which engines are the best. It's not cute, women for sure don't think it's cute, it's stupid and petty. Half are just bandwagon riders, never owned a 2JZ powered car, never owned Coyote especially in AU/NZ since they are in new model Mustangs and half the people posting can't even afford one. This was about the project car not dumb arguing over which engine is better. Stop being stupid. I wouldn't blame Motive, Fullboost, Rob Dahm, Tarvish or Peter Bjork to shut down the comment sections because people who you are suppose to be adults act like children, which is actually an insult to children.
