- The VTC gear is a oil pressure activated gear that is controlled by the computer. How to service a VTC gear. I will show you the inner workings of the HKS VTC gear and everything that makes the system work. Plus a trick on how to upgrade HKS step 1 VCAM system to step 2 for free! Step 2 HKS VCAM system will make a huge different allowing VTC cam gear timing to be adjusted from 30 degrees to 50 degrees. Thanks to Doug at U.P. Garage USA for teaching me this trick. This will give my Nissan Skyline GTR R32 more horsepower and torque and turn it into Godzilla. Must have forged pistons that may need to be cut for clearance. Please consult your tuner before attempting this. Lets take a look at the entire HKS VCAM system. How does variable valve timing work. If you are thinking of installing it yourself, I will show you every component of the HKS step 1 VCAM system and how to install it yourself.

Again, respect to u for dropping this kind of info. The fact that you paid money to have work like this done and shops won't even give out these details unless you pay em.
a real godsend man, nobody has pulled down a V cam that i can find in english and explained it so that we can install it ourselves, thanks heaps man! keep making videos keep growing!
Thanks for the complements, glad you found this video helpful. I make these types of videos for people just like us and the GTR community. Thanks for watching and lots more content to come. In the middle of a HKS step 2 full engine rebuild.
I really appreciate your content man, it's so detailed, clear and well edited. You are a professional man, building a couple cars, tearing into engines explaining and understanding how the vcam works. Yeah you are a pro.
I did not know how the vcam works in such detail nor did I know about taking the stopper off for step 2 once the bottom end is upgraded. Thank you
You're new engine seems like it's gonna be badass man 2.8 stroker nice.
I appreciate that! Thanks for the positive feed back, it is very nice and encouraging to hear. I am going far down the rabbit hole with my car and far past my mechanical ability knowledge. But I know I can complete this build. Nice to hear you like the video editing, this video took me 6 hours to edit and about 1.5 hours to shoot.
Very informative vid. Getting a 2.8L build done on my 95’ R33 GTR, including HKS VCam, so this was a great insight 👍
Awesome! Thank you! Hope your 2.8 build goes smoothly and turns out as you dream!
The seals and springs in the vcam gear are like miniature rotary engine apex seals. Thanks for the great teardown.
You bet, it we very interesting to see what was inside, for sure!
Came to learn about vcam then realized you were at bremerton raceway. Real cool to see
That's awesome man, thanks for visiting my channel for some VCAM stuff. I plan to be back to Bremerton Raceway again next summer.
Sweet vid, giving some details on U.P. Garage magic tricks 😆
Glad you liked it! Thanks!
Thanks for the great informative video, this is helping me in my decision to go Vcam.
You bet brother, good luck with your build!
enjoying the rb content the lighting makes a massive difference
Thanks, I am having fun working on the RB. Glad to hear that you can see the difference with the new lighting.
Interesting video, cool too see this system up close. I also appreciate the effort with the lighting and filming
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for the feedback. Lots more to come, when I have some time!
Thanks for the positive feedback. Glad you enjoyed the content. Thanks for checking out my channel!
Great work brother! Man can't wait till I'm able to get step 2! Last bit I need 😁 but man, also can't wait for more track days !
Thanks David, at least you have the RB28 HKS stroker kit done on your car. That was the most expensive part. You can always add VCAM later. I will have to meet up with your for a track day with my new 2022 WRX.
Haha forsure! Very thankful for whatbi have so far. Sounds good brother! Can't wait to see that thing in action
Thanks for showing the vcam
You are welcome, thanks for watching and glad you enjoyed!
Thanks for making this vid! Subbed
You bet! Thanks for watching!
Awesome content Josh - I've got the Step 2 on the way.
Since I'm running a greddy sandwich plate + Taarks adapter (deleted the OEM oil cooler), I figure I can T the Vcam oil line off either the Taarks adapter or Sandwich plate.
Any thoughts?
I doubt it needs a pressurized "reverse" feature. The drag on the cam would be enough to let it slip the other direction when the pressure is reduced. Simple. Just a guess but I am pretty sure that's accurate.
I didn't think about the pressure from the cam and engine spinning to run it back the other way. I would agree with your conclusion. Thanks for your insight and for watching. 👍
👍
Thank you sir! 💪
Hey mate, great video.
I have a step 2 and need to make it in a step 1.
Are you able to take some photos and measurements of this small metal plate? This would help me immensely, or are you willing to sell the small plate? 🙏
It’s hard to get any info out of any shops or people, the GTR scene has changed a lot.
I wish that I had that metal plate for you, but I sold that to one my subscribers a few months ago that reached out to me. You might want to reach out to UP Garage USA. Erik might be able to help you on the specs for that. Good luck! instagram.com/u.p.garageusa/
Those "tiny bits" are like apex seals. Their job is to seal the chambers from eachother. Basicly like poston seals in hydraulic cylinders.
Awesome, thanks for the heads up! Thanks for watching!
you need to still buy a step 2 cam because of the cam lobe measurement will be off when passing more that 248 Degrees. RHDJapan sells the Upgrade cam once you take out the stopper.
NISSAN SKYLINE GT-R RB26DETT 1989 - 2002 22002-AN036 VCAMSHAFT RB26 S2 264DEGIN $1,000.00
Yes, I do have the step 2 HKS vcam shaft upgrade as well as the step 2 HKS exhaust cam + HKS valve springs! Thanks for watching!👍
Nope, you don't need. A while ago, HKS were selling step 1 type A and type B. The camshaft was the same. Difference with type A and B was just the max variable angle with A being 30°, and B 50°. That being said, you can just take out the wedge in the cam sprocket, and run the step 1 camshaft. Lemme know if you need wanna check the HKS pdf!
thank you for information Important ..
what about the tuning V CAM the same any cam or deferent ?
sorry for my language is weak
The tuning is completely different to tune for VCAM over standard or upgraded camshafts.
I don't suppose you still have that piece that you removed from the vtc gear, do you?
Yeah its sitting on my work bench. You looking for that?
What is the name of the powder you used to powder coat the covers ??
I have the valve covers done by UP Garage USA. I am not sure which shop they use to powder coat.
Where did you get the hks turbo elbows I've been trying to find then for my car
I bought them about 2 years ago from RHDjapan.com From what I understand HKS has discontinued these now. You might want to contact Trusk Kikaku or TKGTCARS.com Octavio might be able to find you a set in Japan still. Here is his IG instagram.com/_julian_rl/ Good luck I hope you can find a pair.
@@JDMRightHandDrive thanks man I'll hit them and see what they can do
No idea why Nissan didnt just build this into the engine like Toyota did with the JZs. Would have made an awesome engine even better.
Sorry Josh the vcam installation isn’t as simple as that you would have to check all the clearances between the cam lobes and the buckets
Yeah your right, might also need to re-shim the head if clearances are not in tolerance. I will be having a machine shop do all this for me.
Correct, just running forged piston won't work, need to have flycut machined on dome for proper clearance, I'm running nitto 2.8
🤪 Promo>SM!!
