Economy: From Modi 1.5 to Modi 3.0

  • In anticipation of the 2024 general elections, expectations are high for Modi 3.0, but the current state of affairs is more accurately termed Modi 1.5. The first seven years of Modi's rule were marked by ineffective policies and economic struggles, exacerbated by decisions like demonetisation and rushed GST implementation. Despite recent government spending to boost growth, doubts persist about its sustainability given high debt levels. Structural reforms are needed to address issues like business friction, infrastructure, and corruption, which continue to plague the economy. Without tackling these underlying problems, the notion of Modi 3.0 remains uncertain. Watch the video as Debashis Basu explains.

An informative quick roundup👍🏼! Thanks. Hopefully Mr. Modi can give rest to his tired old shoulder and pass the responsibility to some other person as the PM.

Excellent views, now with the diminished majority, good excuse to not kick start all that was pushed to the third term and pending since the first.

Modi 1.0 was continuation of programs of UPA (modified by minor tweeks) with sanskritised new names. Possibly to gauge the 'pitch condition'. 1.5 and thereafter was certainly centered around mistaken assumptions behind demonetisation. Supporters touted creation of mechanism to handle Bancruptcy and said NPA of banks will disappear (never mind close hair cuts) . Turning blind eye to the plight of victims of sudden lockdown was touted by friendly economists as the mark of a genius. Yes, the economy did not go belly up and thereby ensured that asset value of HNI's grew by leaps and bounds-never mind the plight of those left behind. By far the biggest impact was to decimate the federal structure of the country, with the states reduced to begging even for the rightful share after imposition of GST. Would Modi 3.0 be more of the same with a bigger sledge hammer? One wonders...

You need to talk about the policy level decisions that need to be taken to transform India. Decentalisation. Government should not be in the business of running a business. A coherent development philosophy. We have had enough of fake news, gimmicks and slogans regarding development.... the only consolation, it is better than what we had from 2004 - 14.

I wonder why you analysing government policies . This is not a Govt as per say ; it's few crony capitalists agency .
Look at every action; social activities for bussing public on communal agenda , economic activities for giving those cronies benifit .
Why those big capex , as this cronies agency understand if communal agenda don't give maximum return , let compensated with show off projects.
Larger public (supporters and opponents alike) always have possitive impact viewing those projects.
THERE LIES GREATER DANGER in Economy.
Those big projects are disaster .
Those projects cost components are NEVER analysed . If the costs are high against benifit , then it will have cascading effect on economy .
As it's happening , this so called government's borrowing TWICE of TOTAL borrowing of previous governments .
India is going towards Srilanka 's way, building airport in jungle .
You can educate people to get out of communalism. BUT never easy to get out from such a debt trap .

Is this Another anti Modi expert highlighting what he considers as failures of Modi policies?
To be fair he should also highlight failures of Congress led governments which ruled India for over six decades.
BE FAIR AND ALSO HIGHLIGHT SUCCESS STORIES OF BOTH.Bless all

Instead of criticizing the Government, why not suggest ways to improve? You seem to be fixated about comparatively minor events (aka called Demonitisation - of course, it was a major loss for those indulging in black money / tax evasion, but that is a different story). 😆

For you it may be criticism but all he is talking about is fact. For elite demonetization may be a minor event but for middle class and msme it is a major blow.

Actions that are taken like this in the name of shock and awe tactics are foolish and detrimental. Demonetization was a death blow to the rural economy.
