    Beeing from germany I can tell that there is less blaming here than implied in this clip. Yes, they are critical voices about the communication policy - especially (not) provided by the state run television & radio. There were serious warnings in the news and the weather forecast but nobody expected this ammount of water coming down ... The rescue operations provided by the civilian and military forces began immediately. Still it is very sad. All these lost lifes. Of course there is room of improvement. But it is very easy to blame others who are willing to take the responsibility and the burden.

      @TheAlja Před 3 lety +1

      I'm from germany too and i don't really understand the critics. There were warnings. We just aren't used to something like this, therefore didn't really expect this. When we think of flooding, we think of some wet cellars, maybe some trees collapsing during storm, but not this kind of catastrophe. The "NINA" app, emergency warning app, usually is very alarming as soon as anything might happen. It is maybe a bit too dramatic about every little thing, tbh, i have not been taking it's warnings very serious lately. No doubt that a lot of our warning systems need improvement and also our response systems, firefighters and THW and even the military are doing a great job, but as always, could do a better job with more money, manpower and equipment. But it's not like there were no warnings at all.

They as we in the USA have a very sophisticated software and system helped by satellites orbiting the earth that can predict with great accuracy these events today. We get that type of alerts all the time in the USA via text by zip code. They are very accurate. I think that was a government mess up and they can learn a lot from that event to communicate better with their mayors, phone carriers, and the general population. www.nytimes.com/2021/07/16/world/europe/germany-floods-climate-change.html

    how often is Europe been hit by something in that grouping?

    • @musashi939
      @musashi939 Před 3 lety

      Usually you can't compare the low pressure systems we get here with tropical ones. Waaaay smaller, can't collect as much energy as tropical storms from the sea. Usually these low pressure systems are relatively benign. You get 10min of a shitton of rain and then it slows down to a nice summer rain. What happened a few days ago was quite extraordinary.

      As far as I know one small dyke (zomerdijk) was breached, but the land behind it was a floodplain. The second one was an emergency dike, which protected a few houses which weren't protected by our dykes. Luckily non of our main dykes has been breached. The one near Meerssen was heavily damage, but it could be repared before it broke.
