- Catastrophic flooding killed 195 people in Germany and Belgium as residents in badly affected areas were overwhelmed by the speed and ferociousness with which the water came. CNN’s Sam Kiley reports from Germany.

Beeing from germany I can tell that there is less blaming here than implied in this clip. Yes, they are critical voices about the communication policy - especially (not) provided by the state run television & radio. There were serious warnings in the news and the weather forecast but nobody expected this ammount of water coming down ... The rescue operations provided by the civilian and military forces began immediately. Still it is very sad. All these lost lifes. Of course there is room of improvement. But it is very easy to blame others who are willing to take the responsibility and the burden.
I agree with you. We enter a new phase of human created climate change. There is no road map for this.
I'm from germany too and i don't really understand the critics. There were warnings. We just aren't used to something like this, therefore didn't really expect this. When we think of flooding, we think of some wet cellars, maybe some trees collapsing during storm, but not this kind of catastrophe. The "NINA" app, emergency warning app, usually is very alarming as soon as anything might happen. It is maybe a bit too dramatic about every little thing, tbh, i have not been taking it's warnings very serious lately. No doubt that a lot of our warning systems need improvement and also our response systems, firefighters and THW and even the military are doing a great job, but as always, could do a better job with more money, manpower and equipment. But it's not like there were no warnings at all.
Absolutely devastating.

i'm from Belgium. During this day i didn't see a single drop of rain and was mowing the lawn. Meanwhile the East part of our tiny country was in pure chaos. The climate is indeed ... changing. America will ofc suffer much more than us, but they are deserve it much more, because of their bad leadership on climate change. A tiny bit less profit in exchange for a healthier planet wouldn't be a bad idea.

In Belgium the fire insurance for buildings includes coverage for flood damage. The government spoke to insurance companies urging them to respond quickly to the claims of the victims. In certain cases car insurance can be used to and on a regional level there is a calamity fund to pay for other costs. Belgium has also applied to the European calamity fund.

A "WARNING" that nobody is listening to.
if the infrastructure was better there , it would have decreased the loss, they should improve their drain system of heavywater and connect it to tunnels to a canal or river
I do not really think, the governments could have foreseen such a case. It sounds a bit to me, like someone trying to make political capital on people's pain and suffering.
Remember EARTHDAY? Back in the Seventies? They KNEW this was going to happen, and had ample warnings. It's about the mean green.
Yes,I confirm.
Scientist has been telling governments for years this was coming.
The European Flooding Awareness System (Efas) warned the German and Belgium government of "Extreme" flooding about 10 days ahed of time and gave them detailed maps of what towns and cities would be flooded. They as we in the USA have a very sophisticated software and system helped by satellites orbiting the earth that can predict with great accuracy these events today. We get that type of alerts all the time in the USA via text by zip code. They are very accurate. I think that was a government mess up and they can learn a lot from that event to communicate better with their mayors, phone carriers, and the general population. www.nytimes.com/2021/07/16/world/europe/germany-floods-climate-change.html
Signs of the time are everywhere. Why blame the government, he cannot stop the hands of God. The scripture clearly says when u think it's peace and safety it's sudden destruction. Repent! Let us humble ourselves and pray for God to heal us. 🙏 all around the 🌎
When are these "once every 1000 year weather events" going to stop happening each year?
They won't. They're already happening more than once a year. Soon they will be constant. Then humanity will disappear.
Was this completely by chance?

@@DitaD Shut up. Does anyone have any REAL ANSWERS?
a low preussur system so a like a tropical storm?
how often is Europe been hit by something in that grouping?
Usually you can't compare the low pressure systems we get here with tropical ones. Waaaay smaller, can't collect as much energy as tropical storms from the sea. Usually these low pressure systems are relatively benign. You get 10min of a shitton of rain and then it slows down to a nice summer rain. What happened a few days ago was quite extraordinary.
People from NA & Europe are like robots

Correct. Tens of thousands of people have been evacuated.
Don't make it worse than it is.
As far as I know one small dyke (zomerdijk) was breached, but the land behind it was a floodplain. It's seem so unreal, FLASH FLOODING FROM HEAVY DOWN POURS OF RAIN, just doesn't make sense, unless its been raining heavy for a WEEK STRAIGHT, with NO LET UP!
yes, and this is exactly what happened. We've had 145,8 l per squaremeter in our region in the last 30 days. Which is 5 times the amount of water we had last year. And we are 500 metres high. Now imagine this amount of water in the valleys, with all the water from the south of Germany, were it rained much harder and regions were already experiencing floodings coming "down" into the lowlands of Nordrhein-Westfalen and Rheinland added.
