    As cheap as oil is and if you have the ability to do it yourself, it’s beyond me why anyone would go past 3 to 5,000 miles. Just my opinion, especially these turbo engines.

    Great video! I change my oil every 6 months or 5k miles. I never gone more than 5k. I do my own maintenance and repairs. It’s hard to find someone trustworthy these days.

    The Oil flow is the same regardless of the filter used in positive displacement pumps which is most vehicles. The biggest restriction on oil flow is the engine itself even the most restrictive automotive filter is able to flow well above the engines needs. The only time the oil flow would decrease is if the oil pump itself went into bypass. Which can only happen with a completely clogged filter with an undersized bypass valve.

    I’ve been using the Motorcraft FL820s on My 2010 Grand Marquis and the Valvoline extended Protection 5w20 after watching your oil analysis, change it every 5000

    I just run a regular wix .. on the 2.5 Subaru naturally aspirated with synthetic oil every 4K miles. I picked up 6 filters and most of them have bits of silicon pieces on the top of the filter that are from when the filter was made.. look at your filters before installing.

    I would like to see a flow rate comparison from an independent like Project Farm before believing that these high mileage filters are too restrictive. Most of them do have more filter material and that should compensate for any excess flow resistance in my mind. Not disagreeing with You at all, I’d just like to see some actual test results. And just for the record, I never go high mileage on oil maintenance quite the opposite for me, but I do like good filters.

    I tried using the Fram extended life oil filter on my 2017 Toyota Camry 2.5 and noticed that VVTI system wasn't happy with cold start. Once I switched back to the OEM Toyota filter the VVTI system was much quieter than the Fram Ultra. However, they worked great on the '07 Town Car. I use the factory Motorcraft oil filter on my son's 2015 Ford Fusion 2.0 Ecoboost. I have found it better to run OEM filters and a good oil like Pennzoil Ultra Platinum.

      I have a ‘17 Camry SE. I only run Denso-manufactured Toyota OEM filters and Pennzoil Ultra Platinum. Zero valve-train noise, even on cold start-ups.

    As a former auto mechanic I run full synthetic in my cars with the factory oil filters my wife's car has 45k miles and my car has 15k miles

    Appreciate you Rich.Good channel here and keep preachin that knowledge bro.Lucky to have a good shop near me here in Delaware.I follow the industry and can't believe some of the "SHIT"coming out of the factory now from all the brands.Now stellantis don't want to keep fixing BS products so now they want to void the warranty for BS reasons or give you some money to go away.Stellantis came in and thought 🤔if we keep selling these trucks for 70,80,90 grand we pocket some cash and now they be like WTF.I have been a Ram owner for a long time and have had great things to say.Now,not so much.The other brands are guilty as well.The industry is a mess.Poor build quality and high prices are going to be a mess to deal with.Hopefully good for the consumer.

    I agree with you about not using these extreme high mileage oil filters because we still should be changing the oil every 5k or so. However, there might be one situation where a high mileage filter might be suitable: where the oil filter is in an extremely difficult place to reach and change out. That might be a case where you could use a 15k mile filter, but with the proviso that you change the oil at least every 5k miles. Some people with cars like that will delay changing the oil because they hate to F with the oil filter so much. But if all they had to do was drop the oil, they might be more inclined to do it than was the case before. But yes, eventually you will have to change that filter as well after the second or third oil change.

    Good point, more filtration does also mean less flow. I don't feel bad now sticking with OEM filters changing it every 5000 miles. On my GM I run the ACDelco Gold (Professional), that's not high mileage one right? The corvette guys praise those filters so that's why I've been running them.

    I’ve always run the K&N Performance oil filter, and have confidence in the product. Never had any type of issue, running them along with Pennzoil Ultra Platinum definitely gives me peace of mind. Thanks again for sharing your valuable experience, and knowledge Rich, take care! Cheers!

    If you got to "Brand Ranks" they test a lot of oil filters and they test the flow rate on cold and hot oil as well as their filtering ability.

    It will be exactly 6 months tomorrow since I last changed my oil. I’ve been using the Fram ultra synthetic XG 3614, along with Valvoline 5W 30 high mileage full synthetic oil. I’ve got just under 4200 miles on the oil and filter, and it still looks fantastic, almost like new. I will be changing it in another one to two weeks, once I get closer to 5000 miles. I drive a 2007 Toyota Tacoma 4.0 L V6 with 151,000 miles on it. I’ve had it for 17 years now, hoping to make it to 20. Still runs great! 👍

    I recently did a change with 5W-20 supertech '20,000' mile synthetic oil. Used Mobil 1 oil filter. For a 2021 Ford EcoSport 2.0 liter. Seems to run smooth. It had a motorcraft filter that would not wanna come off. I fought that filter hard.
    I know the Fram Ultra Synthetic filters have less flow, for sure. From experience with them! Engine in a 2.4 HHR ticked badly with those. A basic filter flowed fine. No tick.

    Glad I got to see this Video before swapping in a Fram XG9018 (That I got after the good value/reviews on this channel. Never appreciated the "twisting" on so many straight pleated cartridge filters. Some are lighter/weaker then others but even the OEM does it too... Was hoping the reinforced design would help reduce any tearing/shrinkage the "twist" might increase) for my 2014 GMC Terrain with the 2.4L Ecotec.
    It has always gotten Oil Changes well under the GM manual's 12 month Interval. OLM has been 6-8K miles... I did an 8 month/3,000 mile change in February 2024 and the UOA from Blackstone had a Fuel Dilution of 5%... The TBN, flashpoint, Viscosity all pointed to it was time to change (wear metals were OK, but Fuel Dilution was/is probably hiding things).
    Since my 2003 Saturn ION also uses the same Filter I might just use it on that one first. Since I was going to maintain Shorter 3,000 mile intervals on both vehicles anyway... I'll continue to use the Regular AC Delco Filters (20 years of Blackstone testing for the 2003 has shown the Filters/Oil easily survives the 6 months/6k miles...).
    Was/Am going to be trying Valvoline Restore and Protect (first on the ION, then the Terrain, even though R&P isn't Dexos Rated... The shorter 3K interval, and being out of Warranty I don't think it'll be a problem)
    The advantage of the Cartridge Filters for me has been that I can just "drop in" new as needed. With R&P I might just use "fresh" filters halfway thru the Interval to monitor progress...

    My 2018 Silverado with a 5.3 and 50k miles doesn’t like Fram Ultra. Oil pressure really low compared to other filters. You got this spot on.

    I believe the Ultra filter they tested on the brand ranks video is the newer style media that restricts flow. There was/is a post on bitog that tests several of the same filters when the Ultra used the full synthetic material. The flow through it was quite good as was the filtering capability.
    From reading the background & testing procedures of that person I would put that person's lab testing above that of Brand Ranks. But again that was using an all synthetic filtering material. I think the Endurance filter now uses the same material the old Ultra once did. I could be wrong.

      The problem with that is its the filter itself they are testing not the system as a whole. Even the most restrictive oil filter still flows way above what the engine needs. The engine itself is the biggest restriction.

      @@DeusKDuo I'm not sure to what extent this is true. If it were 100% true I think there would be a lot more filters on the market without built in bypasses. Filter companies do not want to spend any percentage of a cent more than they have to. If a lack of a bypass in the filter becomes a warranty issue for them all they have to do is add a disclaimer that a plugged filter is from neglect & it is on you.
      Surely idling & loafing around town is lower flow demand but towing, aggressive driving, steep hills, and cold starts is a different ballgame. Most people will experience at least one of these situations at some point while driving their vehicle.

      @@peskypeet Also another thing i didnt mention is that automotive oil pumps are positive displacement pumps. Which means they flow the same amount of oil for a given RPM no matter what so it just flows less when loafing around and more during towing and racing. a larger restriction just increases oil pressure. So even if the filter was a restriction it wouldn't matter. On your point on bypass valves some filters actually do not have bypass valves and you don't hear of engine failures due to it. The bypass filter is for situations like negligence or sudden material buildup from purposefully trying to clean out a neglected engine with cleaner oils like HPL or maybe even valvoline restore and protect but if that where the case it wouldn't matter if it was a high efficiency or not. Another scenario were bypass may occur like what happens often is quick lube shops dont change the filter at all for multiple oil changes. I am not saying they all do it but i have seen it many times. I will say you are correct about cold starts putting vehicles into bypass but that occurs regardless of being in a high efficiency filter or not. Also another thing to note is if you look at a vehicles oil pressure it is always higher then the filters bypass valve. For example a 2002 camry filter has a bypass valve on the filter of about 11-12psi the system sits at 25 psi and up. The filter isnt going into bypass thats the pressure created from the restriction of the engine. If the engine wasnt the restriction the car would be in bypass 24/7 regardless of the filter.

    I change my oil every 2,000 to 3,000 miles and change my ACDelco filter every other time. Costco Kirkland full synthetic $32 for 10 quarts when on sale ($39 originally), and RockAuto 12-pack ACDelco filters for $3.50 each. Simple as!

    Yeah I don't care when I change the oil the filter getting changed to its not worth it putting nice clean oil then going run it through a dirty filter??? Wife has a 2016 jeep cherokee trailhawk I do all the maintenance myself ...best filter I've found is the good ole Purolator One it's like 99.9% or something and it's really seeming to like the Vavoline extended oil it runs smooth and quiter and as of now on the oil indicator it's showing 6k since last oil change with still 40% oil life left I usually change it at 6k mark but I want to see just how far the indicator would go before it says it's due ...Pennzoil Platinum would go till 7k mark before it would say it was due so it's looking like this Vavoline extended is out performing the PP

    0w oils dry out if parked along time. My dip sticks stay oily with 5w30 and 10w30/40 even sitting for a month or more! Just an old maint man's experiencial knowledge! No rust on my dip sticks! Lol At 2000 to 3000 mile changes my engines run great and clean if I avoid 0w20 oil! Just hate oil burning and soot in tail pipe!

    My wife's equinox we have changed the oil every 3-4k miles which is about 150 hours. I have always used the oem filter and Valvoline or pennzoil platinum. Doesn't use very much oil like 1/4 a quarter every 3k miles. It has 69k on it. Probably one of the best running 2.4 eco tec motors since we found that Infrequent oil changes is what causes every problem on those engines.

      Just to clarify what are you defining as "Infrequent Oil changes"? Running well over the manual's "maximum" OLM/Annual (12 month)?
      Picked up my Parents 2014 GMC Terrain last Fall (4 cylinder, 2.4L Ecotec AWD, Currently over 113,000 miles) and will be shooting for 3000 miles change intervals. Its been good to them, now me since New (well maintained). Oil never went over GM's (12 month interval) nor the OLM's 6-8K miles. Changed often every 3K-5K miles (because the Oil Service Stickers usually kept that interval from the Dealership/Shop).
      Based on Oil Analysis I've got to watch out for Fuel Dilution and PCV freeze up (in Winter) potentially causing excess pressure/Rear Seal Blow out (partially "fixed" by upgrading to a vented Oil Cap... If the PCV system were to freeze... Being sure to regularly change/have fresh Oil during the Winter May help keep excess water,sludge,etc. from building up in, and blocking Oil Passageways)

      @lgoamity basically infrequent oil changes on these vehicles are running the OIC following the oil life monitor that is on the vehicle. Just keep it between 3k and 4k and no more than 150 hours of run time and you will be fine. I have the vented cap and I know it opens up from time to time because the little baffle in the oil fill opening is covered in varnish.
      The theory I saw someone propose is that keeping the oil clean on these cars will keep the pcv gasses cleaner which resultes in the fixed orific pcv hole staying clear and not clogging up and it keeps the valves clean too. I check my pcv every oil change and I know my fixed orifice isn't clogged because there is vacuum through it at idle. You can test it by plugging the pcv line at warm idle speed and you should hear a whistling sound.
      For peace of mind you can install a catch can to keep crap out of the line during the winter. I don't have one because I am in Texas and it doesn't super cold for all of one week In the winter.

    09' Jeep wrangler with 112k miles on it currently. Wix XP, Purolator boss, Fram Endurance, and Fram Ultra for me. I use the extended length for more filtering media. 1 year or 5-8k miles with Liqui Moly or Shell Rotella T6 5w40 with MoS2 addictive. So far pretty good.

    It's kinda crazy how you make a video on this topic when I've been asking myself if I should be running an extended mile filter on my 08 crown vic P71. I use to run the FL820 with motor craft synthetic blend when i first bought it back in 2018. Shortly after, I was running mobil 1 synthetic oil with the mobil1 filter but ever since i came across your channel of you opening filters, I will say cause of you, I switched over to Fram ultra synthetic. I was always nervous of running a fram on my car but you opened up my eyes. For a cheaper filter than the mobil1 with much better filtration than the mobil1 or motor craft 820, it was a no brainer to run the ultra synthetic. Fast forward to this past month, I've been having these thoughts, like should I really be running an extended mile filter vs just running a basic OE filter. I've even thought about using the same filter every 2 oil changes since it extended but does it make sense when I could just buy a cheaper OE basic filter but have a new filter on each time. 2 weeks ago, went to walmart to buy some oil for an oil change and was standing in front of the filters for like 20 minutes going back and forth on should I get the ultra synthetic or the tough guard or try the new endurance or even try the super tech. I decided to try the endurance but as soon as I turned the aisle, there was a clearance rack with a whole bunch of filters and automotive stuff. Had a bunch of KN filter and other filters. One thing that caught my eye was there were 2 supertech MP2 20k filters(blue filters) which I saw. I've always wanted to try those cause I personally think for the price and build they were decent filters. Not sure why they were on the clearance rack but I snagged both of them and put back the endurance. Unfortunately you can't get the blue version MP2 filter unless you order online. They only carry the ST2 white filters in store, at least in my area. I got them for $5.97 each, which is weird cause that's the price they were even online so not sure if I got a deal on them. I did recently check online and they're going for $11 and some change for the blue supertech MP2 filters in my size, which is crazy cause at that price, I'd rather stick with an Fram ultra or another brand. I wouldnt mind running the motor craft 820 but they're like $9 at Walmart and they use to be under $4. I've seen them on amazon for different prices but I just dont want it to be a knock of brand. Overall, I think I'm going to run a lower grade basic filter or even a mid grade filter so I dont have issues with oil flow or cost. Sorry for the long rant

    i agree with this,i use oem on my ford truck and i did use a 20000 mile super tech filter on my wifes rav 4 and experience upper cam phaser noise on start up i know thats kinda of a norm for thoes motors so i went to a toyota filter which is a canister filter i would say im not totally impressed with it it seems low quality but it did let oil up faster and did quitend it down to a minimum and i do my own oil change around 4 to 4500 miles with vavoline advance full synsynthtic i think the high millage filters do starve the motors on start up for sure some what

      Don’t sell the OEM cartridge filter short. They are made by Denso and are actually very high quality.

    I always appreciate your honesty and integrity on information sharing Rich. I never go past 3500 miles on oil and filter change, I just use a quality synthetic oil and filter I never buy extended mileage on either one. I’m not going to say which ones I use I don’t want to start a war on your channel. Take care brother.

    Oil filters seem to be a choice between less filtering capability and higher flow vs. better filtering and lower flow. Do you put any importance on filter media type (synthetic, syn. blend, cellulose) for 5k oil changes?

    Very Interesting. I get the Oil and Oil Filter changed in my car every 10,000 Kilometres / 6 months. Been using K&N and REPCO oil filters. K&N oil filters get a " Negative " review that its only good for Performance Driving as the filter doesn't capture any contaminants it only filters oil quicker. Love K&N oil filters, very solid.

    How about a 13 Edge 3.5? new water pump, timing chain, guides, tensioners, and oil pump. All Motorcraft.. is it okay to run, a Wix XP or Purolator boss? I typically change my oil and filter every 6,000 MI... Also what do you think about switching to 5W30? I have about 120k, water pump was done out of preventive maintenance.

    So you are saying they are too restrictive, even if they are changed every 5k miles? The cost is not an issue with me, as i run either RP or Pennzoil Ultra Platinum in my vehicles (on your research and recommendations) 👍

      I have read that the more filter media in a filter, it can and probably does restrict oil flow some.. I use a regular OEM filter.. Nissan for my 2023 Frontier PRO4X.

    I have a 2004 Mercury Grand Marquis with 136,992 miles and the 4.6 Liter 2 valve engine. I use Mobil-1 Extended Performance High Mileage 5w-20 motor oil. I use the mobil-1 extended performance oil filter. I change my oil every 4,000 miles anyway, but I only see the mobil 1 extended performance oil filters in stores, so that's what i use because i know that mobil 1 is a good brand. What do you have to say about these particular filters?

    I'm the second owner of a 2016 F150 with a 5.0. I have documented oil changes from the Ford dealer every 5K. I purchased it with 110,000 miles and will change my oil every 3K or six months using Valvoline 5W-30 High Mileage MaxLife Full Synthetic. I planned to use Purolator Boss filters because I purchased three on sale at Walmart. Should I keep them on the shelf and return to Motorcraft filters or use them until they're gone?

    I'll continue to use PureOne, Boss, Microguard Select, STP XL filters.

    Ive got a 19 3.5 ecoboost in a f150 that i run signiture series Amsoil in..amsoil or wix filter only. Oil gets changed at 5,000 miles..

    Ya, I’m going to stay with my old Fudd practice to change the filter with the 5000 mile or less oil change. Logically? If I was going to exceed OCI, I’d change the filter if I was going over on the oil change mileage. Maybe I’m too old school, and I know companies have done testing….but what’s the quality control? What is the actual performance of production filters, and how well do the production filters maintain that performance over 10 or 15 thousand miles?

      Put it on dry and use flood-mode, if available on your car. Otherwise, I would prefill. JMO.

    It’s not worth the risk imho. I change the filters every oil change at 5k miles.
    I noticed that my tinnitus in my left ear drowns out the cicadas

    While this is informative it's also a kick in the pants for me, just bought 3 Purolator Boss filters and I drive a 08 F150 with 280,000 😂😂😂😂😂
    So just stick with the ol 820s?

    I use the ultra Fram and I have a 2013 Honda CRV, which has that timing gear actuator rattle problem, I had a new one put on already. Do you think it’s a bad idea I change my filter, every 4000 miles with the oil I know you could do 20,000 but I would never ever .even my Honda synthetic oil I stopped using that I use the Valvoline restore now,anyway you know more than me so I hope I’m not hurting my engine 2013 Honda CRV 2.4 naturally aspirated.

    I just run royal purple for around 5k. then put in bulk 5w30 valvoline. drive it for a week or month. fill with rp again.
    Change my oil filter every 6 months or 8-10k 80% highway driving. I use purolator boss filters on my 4.6. i dont like using our acdelco filters quality has gone down alot. I cut open every oil filter out of my car everytime. hardly any dirt or damage to be talked about :3

    Well damn, boss, I went out and purchased 2 Fram Ultras and some Valvoline High Mileage for my 2013 F150 Coyote with 113 K on your recommendation, and now you're changing things up on me......and others. I have no intention of going past 5K OCI anyway. So I go with Motorcraft here on out is what you're saying?

    I've been buying the expensive Fram and then changing at like 3k or 4k on my 05 tahoe
